EDITOR’S NOTE Happy New Year! And what a wonderful time of year it is, even with this snow. We are proud and excited to present our January edition. As must be apparent, there have been some vast improvements. From offering more fashion content, to the overall organization and continuity, we have striven for a book that is concise, considered and engaging. Disney characters and artwork ©Disney, Disney/Pixar characters ©Disney/Pixar.

This month we feature the philanthropist and plastic surgeon to the stars, Dr. Kassir Ramtin - one of Park Avenue’s most prominent and generous doctors. We have him on the cover because we were struck by his charitable deeds and wanted to start the New Year with a positive bang. I think if you read the feature story, you will see that he is worthy of our attention.

STOP!!! Don’t Make That Resolution! By Rhonda Huff, M.Ed, BS Fitness/Wellness, IIN, AADP Holistic Health Coach

R

esearch from the University of Scranton suggests that only 8% of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions. I want to provide you with a simple way to beat those odds. Most people make resolutions that are either too vague or too complicated. A vague resolution doesn’t have a measureable outcome goal. Without a measureable outcome goal, it is impossible to formulate behaviors that will actually support that outcome. A complicated goal overwhelms the prefrontal cortex, leading to higher stress/cortisol reactions and reduced willpower. Translation: “That chocolate cake is calling my name!” To successfully reach a goal, your prefrontal cortex must be trained to handle the new information in a logical and stress-free manner. The key is to look at your resolution and set a “habit” around that resolution. Research shows that it takes an average of 66 days for a habit to become automatic (Lally et al., 2010). Once that habit is being performed efficiently and without conscious thought, you can safely add a new habit surrounding your ultimate goal. Let’s take the top 10 New Year’s resolutions for 2012 and explore one simple behavioral habit that can make a huge difference and lead to a better overall outcome.

ithout a doubt, one of the highlights of the recent Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 fair was the simply marvelous presentation of outdoor and site-specific installations in Collins Park - the bit of acreage fronting GW’s long-time favorite museum in Miami Beach, the Bass Museum Of Art.

REAL FAKE written on top. Curated by Nicholas Baume, the Director And Chief Curator of Public Art Fund, the Fair was a master class in efficacy and managed to display just how successful a great contemporary art extravaganza can be. Clearly, it was still possible to engage the general public. Inspiring yet accessible, the trafficstopping event caught most by storm.

As one of the first journalists flown down to Miami many years ago, I became a personal guest of the then active Mayor. It was at a time when there were still only two hotels on Ocean Drive, Tony Goldman’s Park Central Hotel and the Carlyle. It was also at that time that I first encountered what would remain for me a true bastion of art in the region, the Bass Museum. Founded by John & Johanna Bass the museum still houses an amazing collection of Old Masters, featuring – among others - jaw dropping works from Peter Paul Rubens.  The recent presentation of outdoor sculpture for Art Basel Miami Beach was dubbed ‘’Social Animals’’ and featured such signature pieces as Tom Friedman’s massive stainless steel sculpture of a man peeing - full stream, the ominous yet synergistic bronze totem-like work by Eureka, and Scott Reeder’s stand-out hit - a huge graffiti like giant cut-out with

In the five or so years since GW has been attending ABMB, the 2013  edition succeeded in being a tad more glamorous, a bit more charged, and exponentially more exciting than in previous years. Though it never lacked in ideals or ambition, the sheer magnificence of the content this year was breathtaking.

George Wayne & Friend

Art Basel Miami Beach draws a flock of some 50,000 or more of the richest, chicest, coolest and ‘artsy fartsiest’ patrons on the planet. The parties are on another scale entirely.  GW won’t soon forget the fabulous soiree at 1500 Ocean Drive – a behemoth of a penthouse owned by local playboy - hosted by the iconic basketball player Scottie Pippen and Omega watches.

Burnishing his credentials as New Yorks new version of nightlife impresario Steve Rubell, Aby Rosen has recently opened Diamond Horse Shoe cabaret/ nightclub in the bowels of the Morgans Hotel in New York City. In short, he has quickly become the talk of the town.  His Art Basel party at the W Hotel was almost as chaotic and celebrity filled as those long lost nights at Studio 54 back in its heyday. Lavish, impeccably thought out, with Dom Perignon endlessly flowing‌ well, thank you Aby Rosen.

The Dapper George Wayne Absolutely incredible - the billowing wind, the non stop top shelf bar, the bounty of canapĂŠs, the pretty women, and, of course, how can I ever forget the fabulous chick – the one who had no hesitation in pulling out her smartphone and showing off the completely nude ‘selfie’ of her boyfriend whom she missed so much, a hot Navy Seal flashing quite the most impressive dong I have seen in some time. I mean only in Miami would some chick you just met pull out her phone to show off a completely nude photo of her beau merrily flashing his Johnson.  Then there were the fabulous nightly parties hosted by New York impresario of the moment Omar Hernandez and nightlife God Patrick Duffy at the old Playboy Mansion in North Beach. And, then there was the most amazing Saturday night I have experienced in a while. There we were on Hibiscus Island - yet another secluded Miami enclave filled with luxury mansions and jetties and amazing outdoor art - where of course the divine Zoe Saldana chose to host a fabulous champagne soiree with the local Ocean Drive magazine.  Standing there in Ivory Lanvin, Zoe was simply radiant. Giddy with joy over being able to introduce her new husband Marco, she flashed us her wellrehearsed smile and escorted us into a lustrous world of endless revelry and romance. We had a wonderful chat, and I asked her if she would at all be interested in getting a job a-la Jennifer Lawrence as

exclusive Brand Ambassador to say Dior.  ‘’Of course I would love that,’’ she purred in the sexiest, most breathless voice imaginable, ‘’but that decision of course would have to be mutually beneficial to both parties.’’  GW is still shocked that a siren and diva the likes of Zoe Saldana with a superior sense of style like Zoe Saldana is still devoid of a major beauty or fashion contract.

You would have thought that GW would have been completely sated and exhausted after that long fabulous weekend in South Beach.  But there was still the matter of his own Fiftieth Birthday celebration – one he had to host at the chic new uptown boite called Tokya at the end of December. Yes, as you likely guessed, it did turn out magnificently. Truth be told, it was the very best birthday party I have ever had. Anna Maria Tornaghi, Noel Mignott, Matthew Addison, uber sports agent Nelson Pena and the cute Soul Artist Model boys‌ I thank all you wonderful folks who turned up and made my 50th more memorable than even the number merits. It was, to be succinct, simply fabulous. Now for some recovery time before... Oh look, the New Year is almost upon us. Well, as they say, no rest for the wicked. Not even for the wannabe wicked elite. Don’t worry. I’ll be in touch. •

It was, however, left to uber developer Aby Rosen to host the party of QBSUJFT GPS "SU #BTFM Ή The huge, champagne soaked bacchanal is where yours truly got to double kiss his long time buddy Lenny Kravitz, have a good laugh with Steven Tyler all while making fun of the obnoixious Jason Binn behind his back. In addition, this is where I got to finally really talk art with the highly erudite Alexander Rodriguez.  Informing about what can only be referred to as a gorgeous and macho piece of work at the Vancouver Canada gallery - the Apartment at the ABMB offshoot New Art Dealers Alliance – I opined that the work would make a perfect set piece at the screening room’s George Wayne’s Birthday Party at Tokya foyer of his no doubt opulent

h darling, I absolutely adore that new dress; and where ever did you buy those lovely lips and matching breasts?” Yes, things have certainly changed – especially on the West Coast and Down South where it has become a sign of affluence to undergo rather exaggerated cosmetic procedures. The more pronounced the mutation, the better the buzz. As a colleague of mine in Tinsel Town recently stated, “Remember when ‘porn celebrity’ was still an oxymoron… way back, before people thought of their bodies as compromised versions of ‘silicone sex dolls?’” Fortunately, New York has remained its own aloof island trapped forever between elite European aesthetics and East Coast self-consciousness. With a sensibility at one remove from the rest of America, savvy locals embrace an understated style with a functionalist bent. Do we want to look better? Unless your only means of employment is a cardboard sign, a cup and a forlorn look, the answer is a resounding yes. Do we want others to conclude that vanity was the motivating factor? In a city that shuns ostentation and celebrates the sublime, aspiring to perfection is hardly a carte blanche for overt revamping. So although the zeitgeist insists ‘faux youth is preferable to aging,’ broadcasting rejuvenation is frowned upon by the smart set.

Few are as aware of this ‘subdued cosmopolitan ideal’ as Dr. Ramtin Kassir, the triple-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is also an otolaryngologist, a specialist in head and neck surgery and an expert in sleep medicine. With extensive field experience in cosmetic, endoscopic and laser surgery, Dr. Kassir is our very own Ponce de León with a space age GPS – he is a man who has not only found the much sought-for fountain of youth, but has managed to bottle it in a discrete and tasteful manner.

THE FEE AND PHI OF CHANGE Although cosmetic surgeons are often compared to highly intuitive sculptors, there are few who want a cubist or a surrealist to go to work on them. Despite the fact that we’ve all seen women whose lips could have been designed by Dali while their eyes allude to Picasso’s African period, the majority of us prefer to come off as ordinary human beings albeit in our prime. It is for this reason we opt for what Dr. Kassir so eloquently refers to as Phi, the golden ratio of 1.618. This classical premise underpinning anatomically accurate works of art by the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci is based on a relatively simple formula. Though many cosmetic surgeons are unfamiliar with the calculations involved, Kassir employs them on a regular basis and does not shy away from elucidation. As Kassir states, “If one measures you from the top of your head to the ground and divides that by the belly button to the ground you get phi; the same is true for arm to finger tip divided by elbow to finger tip; and also for head to chin divided by the top of the nose to chin. It works for the distances between teeth, it worked for the Parthenon; it is, in short, the mathematical basis of perfect proportions and beauty.” Cold science? Firstly, science isn’t cold; it just appears that way to those who suffer post-traumatic disorders from high school exams gone awry. As we know by now, fractals have become the best way to interpret some of the most beautiful and complex structures in nature. Math may not be the reason for the state of things but it is certainly an essential tool in understanding the way they work and function. So, regardless how ambitious or expensive the procedure, it takes a Jack-of-manysurgical-traits like Kassir to pull it off. After all, for every beanstalk of a dream, there exists the giant risk that says: Fee-fi-fo-fum, if the change is strange then the Phi was flubbed.

ART MEETS SCIENCE Artist, artisan and man of science, Dr. Kassir understands the delicate balance between the right and leftbrain. “My right hemisphere tResident January 2014

As in art restoration, you first need to determine the original before deciding on an appropriate course of action. “Most of my patients,” admits Kassir, “are between 52 to 55 years old… usually women – some have done maintenance, some want the whole shebang; then there are the nose patients – average age 23.5; and then the injectable market – basically this means minor interventions for anyone from twenty to thirty and more volume for those over forty.”

THE MAN BEHIND MANY FACES Meeting Dr. Kassir for the first time, one is immediately impressed by the fact that he is far less interested in his own image than he is passionate about the work he does. Softly spoken but deliberate, his empathetic eyes wash over his sentences, punctuating ideas with a sense of childlike wonder. “My family were all doctors… my dad a pediatrician. I was told I wrote my first prescription at the age of 3,” beams Kassir with enough self-irony to make me smile but never doubt his resolve. “We came here from Iran after the revolution,” he continues, “All my immediate uncles and aunts were doctors.” Kassir moved to Dallas, Texas where he did his undergrad pre-med studies, staying on in Galveston for face and neck surgery. As he says, “The face interested me. Liposuction was very popular but I didn’t like the idea of doing something that was often such a temporary solution… Anatomically, the head and neck fascinated me even though it was much harder to pull off.” “Facial reconstructive surgery interested me most,” explains Kassir, “when I finished my studies in Florida, I was actually supposed to go back to Texas and set up shop with my brother but I had an aunt in New York – like my brother, a dermatologist – and when she asked me to come here… well, that was 1997 and I’ve been here ever since.” Recalling that time, Kassir chuckles “1997… cosmetic surgery was just getting really hot and the

sculpts, feels in 3-D, intuits, is conscious of beauty and senses the art… but it always respects the left brain, the science, the medicine, the passion for precision, the mathematics behind it all.” Likewise, Kassir is well aware that different problems necessitate different approaches. “If I am working on an aging face in its 50’s, I need to see pictures of what she looked like twenty or thirty years ago. Many of us suffer from sun damage – discrete fat pockets under the face that descend and shrink… we need to peel all that back to really see the true structure. The bone volume gets smaller, things cave in, the jawbone becomes thinner and the skeleton shrinks. So we need to fill certain areas, re-drape muscles, all in an effort to combat gravity… after which, we laser the skin to peel off the worn layers and make it look fresher.”

FDA hadn’t yet approved Botox – at the time, most people hadn’t even heard of it.”

MIRROR MIRROR Many religions subscribe to the notion that we were made in God’s image. Of course, that’s not necessarily a reason to have an omnipresent nose. But it does make a case for maintaining humanoid features. “We had a patient,” explains Dr. Kassir, “a cat lady… with 29 previous plastic surgeries – some good, some bad – things were very off. In the end The Doctors (a TV show) did a documentary on our restoration… we operated on her a couple of times and reversed the problems. Since then we have people from all over the world coming to us – basically, we correct abnormalities and re-establish a natural look.” Having been in business for 17 years, Kassir also does the non-surgical aesthetics from botox (Dysport being the newest and most durable variation) to lasers to injectables. “People embark upon treatment with three fears,” Kassir cautions, “anaesthesia, looking like they’ve undergone surgery – or worse, looking like a freak – and the costs. When it comes to costs the issue is often one of guilt. Should I be spending this on my child, my husband, my pet… usually you can tell their whole life story from the moment they walk in. Often it’s, ‘I’m fifty-two and I’ve already taken care of everyone else and now it’s time for me.’ They want to look better and they don’t want others to notice. ” But come they do, and in droves. John Dryden’s dictum be damned; if God didn’t want his work mended by man then we wouldn’t have hospitals or medicine either. Cases in point: a woman on Wall Street loses her husband and worries about losing her only source of revenue if she doesn’t keep up with all the young looking people on the job. Perfect candidate. A very energetic retired army general decides to open a medical practice but wherever he goes people treat him like a ghost, asking him when he’s planning to retire. In a nutshell, Dr. Kassir can make these people shine.

RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY As a medical missionary of sorts, Dr. Kassir devotes a great deal of his private time and expenses to helping the third world and those in need. “Operation Smile (the charity to help underprivileged children with cleft lips or palates) hasn’t really penetrated the Middle East,” Kassir reflects, “but because I have connections there, a few years ago I started going.” With difficulty he continues, “I mean, it’s a different kind of society for women and removing a cleft nose or palate allows them to get married more easily and lead a normal life.” Kassir makes an effort to hold back his emotions, “I mean, we had people from orphanages travel all the way from…” The doctor’s voice breaks off and then, “Let’s just say, it’s gratifying.” After explaining that $200 in the Middle East is enough to keep someone in a hospital overnight, it becomes evident that the good doctor has been shelling out these fees from his own pocket. “I go abroad maybe twice a year. And what I want is to train people there, to have a presence, to make a difference. I want to create a foundation – to make something that lasts, to make something that effects change.” • Kassir rises from his seat, leaving me with the words, “we are at the forefront of a new era – one wherein we’ll be able to harvest stem cells to regenerate organs. The institutions and universities are all there. Remarkable stuff, really. It’s just a matter of time.” And so the man for whom work is often based on curbing the effects of time departs on the optimistic note that while time may not heal all wounds, it does offer us the opportunity to learn how to heal them ourselves. •

Guatemala

A Gateway to Mayan Culture G

uatemala is one of those rare countries where time seems to stand still. The Mayan way of life has been preserved from their customs to the traditional dress and has not succumbed to the homogenization of the Western world. To truly experience the gorgeous landscape of Guatemala, eco tourism sports and the fascinating Mayan culture, stay at the luxurious boutique hotel, Casa Palopo on Lake Atitlan and Antigua where the proprietor Claudia Bosch will create an unforgettable itinerary from a local’s point of view of this unspoiled country. From the airport, you will be whisked from the bustling Guatemala City and immersed into the colonial life that once presided over the country in the charming ancient city of Antigua. This UNESCO heritage city oozes with charm where cobblestone streets set the stage for meticulously preserved ochre hued Spanish colonial buildings housing antique and handicraft stores. By night, the city is brimming with lively bars and restaurants populated by locals and Westerners, many of whom are learning Spanish at the local schools in town. Tucked away behind a side street off the main road is the Casa Palopo Antigua, where you will feel like an aristocrat in the beautiful private 3 bedroom villa decorated with Spanish and Latin American antiques and furnishings. A private gourmet chef and driver remain at your disposal, who will take you to the breathtaking Casa Palopo in Lake Atitlan. A three hour scenic drive from Guatemala City, Lake Atitlan takes one through a deep volcanic crater surrounded by 3 active majestic volcanoes. A weekend and summer retreat for the rich and famous, Lake Atitlan is characterized for its small Mayan villages that specialize in indigenous handicrafts such as beading, woven fabrics, paintings that dot the shoreline. The easiest way to access these villages is by motorboat, providing an unsurpassed view of the stately lakeside mansions and preserves. Santiago is the largest village and is known for its worship of Maximon, a rogue idol representing a fusion of deities. His precious effigy is housed in various houses for a designated time period and is used by locals and tourists to perform religious Mayan rituals and ceremonies. San Juan is famous for its woven fabrics, where everything is made by hand just as it was centuries ago. Visit one of their collective studios and see how yarns are dyed from vegetables and hand woven on a loom. Panajachel is the village most frequented by tourists that is known for their active nightlife scene.

Casa Palopo sits high on the hills of Santa Catarina and was once a private 7 bedroom villa that was converted to a luxury boutique hotel with an adjacent two bedroom home. Once inside you feel the conviviality of a wealthy friend’s retreat with exquisite taste in furnishings and artwork that evoke Guatemala’s Mayan heritage. Each oversized room features a different décor and color scheme, all of which have unparalleled views of Lake Atitlan and some with private terraces. The best suite is the blue hued room #1 that feels like a master bedroom with a large bathroom featuring a sunken tub and an expansive private terrace. There are also many places to relax and rejuvenate, by the pool, on a chaise on the serene terrace, the cozy library or end the night with a nightcap by the stately indoor fireplace. For families or groups, the luxuriously appointed private villa above the hotel is an ideal choice with 2 bedrooms, a separate entrance, gourmet kitchen, private pool and Jacuzzi, and outdoor fireplace. The fine dining at Casa Palopo 6.8 restaurant is legendary in this region. Many locals from Guatemala City will arrive by boat or make a day trip out to watch the sunset and dine at this intimate romantic venue decorated with flickering candle lit chandeliers overlooking the twinkling lights of the cities at the base of the lake. The chef takes a modern contemporary approach to Latin American cuisine using farm to table ingredients and infuses his dishes with an international flair. For breakfast try the traditional Guatemalan breakfast, Chilaquiles, with crunchy tortillas in a tomato and chorizo sauce with melted mozzarella. Their dinner menu offers savory combinations such as the tuna tartare with avocado and orange juice, crunchy jumbo shrimp wonton with a ginger, sake and mirin sauce, and juicy sirloin steak paired with a Porto sauce. Of course a luxury destination wouldn’t be complete without jetset amenities. Not only can you reach Casa Palopo by car, but there is also have a private marina and a helipad on the grounds. In only 20 minutes by helicopter you can be whisked back to the Guatemala City International Airport. • For more information: casapalopoa.com

One of the city’s hotspots is the boho chic Tantalo, a multi level boutique hotel, tapas restaurant and roof bar that overlooks

the cosmopolitan skyline of the new city. Just 90 miles outside of the city is Anton Valley, a picturesque village located in an extinct volcano crater which is a weekend getaway for many wealthy Panama City locals. Tap into your adventurous side and become one with nature through an adrenaline induced zipline tour through the rainforest where you’ll sail at high speeds past exotic birds and flora and get close to a majestic waterfall. Spend the day hiking through the rainforest and along the waterfall trails. Or take an ATV ride through the mountains and windy rugged terrain. A must see attraction is the Panama Canal Museum that is a fascinating in depth look at

A perfect spot to explore Panama City is the action packed Hard Rock Hotel Panama Megapolis that truly embodies the spirit of a city that never sleeps with a Latin American Vegas flair. Housing the city’s hottest nightlife scene, Bits is a gorgeous outdoor Rooftop lounge located on the 62 floor with unsurpassed 360 views of the skyline making you feel like you’re on top of the world. Grab a potent mojito at the bar or one on one of their plush couches and admire the scene. For those ready to party all night long, the ultra chic Bling was inspired by the most famous nightclubs in the world where the action lasts until sunrise. Filled with pretty young things, models, and celebrities, once you’ve made the cut to sail past the crowds,

this is the bottle service type of nightclub with a VIP and a VVIP area. A striking white décor sets the stage for sensory overload with leather banquettes, crystal chandeliers, go go dancers, and a thumping lit dance floor. The Float pool and Bar is a tropical oasis featuring an infinity pool with dramatic views of the city which melds “pool” and “party”, but also a great spot for families, couples, and singles. If you’re looking to recharge and relax visit the full service Rock Spa with a variety of invigorating massages, facials, and other indulgent spa treatments. If you are craving pan Asian cuisine, Soy offers an exotic Latin Asian fusion menu in an airy atmosphere with creative sushi rolls and innovative takes on classic Asian and Latin classics like tuna tartare tacos and fresh ceviche, paired with a specialty sake cocktails, this is a great place to start the night.

After living the high life in Panama, retreat to the calming Zen like rooms that resemble a cool bachelor pad complete with a wet bar and modern furnishings against floor to ceiling windows offering unencumbered views over the city and canal bay. Adding to the comforts of home, an oversized bathroom and plush comfortable beds ensure a rejuvenating stay. As everything in the Hard Rock Hotel revolves around music, you can set the mood a download different playlists available through the Sound of Your Stay program, borrow an electric Fender guitar, or test your hand at DJing by using the same professional DJ mixing programs on one of their iPads loaded with thousands of tunes for a one of a kind experience. For steak lovers, Tauro can satisfy those carnivorous cravings with classic signature steakhouse favorites with a French twist. The dramatic décor is awash in a rich palette of deep red with larger than life photos of music icons adorning the walls.

reat news for New Yorkers who have had enough frigid winds, slippery ice and winter chill. No need to sip a hot toddy indoors while sporting cashmere socks and slippers. Don your sunglasses, bathing suit and flip flops and zip down to Turks & Caicos. If you like sun drenched beaches, crystal clear blue water and lovely amenities, Seven Stars beckons you.

away, beachside by the ocean. With tennis courts, life size chess board, myriad play toys and the West Deck for sundowners while watching the golden Caribbean sunset, guests want for nothing. This is the place in case your paramour pops the question - it’s a favorite destination for honeymoons and weddings. During my stay, a blissful couple exchanged vows and celebrated with a lovely reception, on the beach.

SEVEN STARS RESORT:

THE SUITE:

Named for the seven stars of the storied Pleiades constellation, this luxury resort is located on the silken sands of Turks & Caicos’ famed Grace Bay Beach. Lush gardens, swaying palms and plentiful bougainvillea throughout create a gorgeous tropical ambiance. Guests soak up the sun in cushy lounge chairs or cabanas by the large salt-water pool, or steps

My spacious ocean front suite showcased stylish décor and island accents with its wood and bamboo furnishings and marble floors. King-size bed with softest linens, large marble bathroom with deep tub for bubble baths, Nespresso machine and floor-to-ceiling windows for scenic viewing happily met my requisite creature comforts. I especially

liked sipping coffee on my private terrace in the morning while taking in nature’s beauty. Waking to the sound of the sea and falling asleep gazing at the starry sky elevates life to its glorious essentials.

SPA:

For ultimate relaxation, de-stressing and indulgent pampering head to The Spa with excellent treatments, therapists and Yon Ka products. Couples massage, in- suite and beachside services are available. Gorgeous green - eyed Emerson, my therapist extraordinaire, treated me with a fantastic facial and full body massage, not to mention his personable demeanor. Reason enough for me to return.

promises to make the signature Restaurant Seven a culinary experience with his island inspired cuisine. I dined on the tastiest scallops and freshest tuna paired with fine wines. Al fresco lunches of island specialties including lobster and conch, poolside at The Sand Dollar or overlooking the ocean at The Deck, were exceptional.

ACTIVITIES:

Complementary water activities like snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing and a romantic sunset sail aboard resort – owned vessel Lady Tamara, provide great inducements to interrupt lounging in your poolside cabana.

BEACH-SIDE JACUZZI :

Late afternoons, everyone heads to the outdoor Jacuzzi with cocktails in tow. It’s ‘the place’ to meet and greet other swells, score invites and get the skinny. It was here that I learned the ultimate cure for a hangover from a fashionable guest who happens to be an ER nurse.

THE BAR:

Put the barmen of Seven Stars on your list of world’s best bartenders. These guys are serious cocktail crafters with an extensive list of luscious libations. Whether imbibing their singularly delectable rum punch, or my favorite – the Gin Garden made by master mixer Nikolo - you’re bound to say, ‘ I’ve never had anything like this. ’

SERVICE:

The super friendly and helpful staff made sure

everyone had a good time. Smiling attendants poolside and beachside were always at the ready to freshen guests with a spritz of water, a cool scented towel and a refill for the empty glass.

AMBIANCE:

Seven Stars is supremely romantic and appeals to all lovers of beautiful, beachy locales. Whether cocktailing on a sunset sail, sunning and swimming, lolling in your cabana, strolling the beach, hot tubbing at dusk, or enjoying a private candlelit dinner– if you were not in

love before, you will be.

the upcoming ski season S

am Champion and Lee Goldberg could be having nervous breakdowns trying to predict the weather. In the morning it’s dark and gloomy and in the afternoon the sun shines, warming the air. And in the midst of all this snowflakes begin to fall and then disappear. Southern tier ski resorts in Pennsylvania and New York that make convenient day trips or weekenders are still tightly shuttered and will not open until at least post-Thanksgiving if the weather gods cooperate. But it’s not too late to start planning for those mountain adventures. The closest in ski resort is Shawnee just outside of East Stroudsburg, PA. As with most of the other resorts in the area, Shawnee is a short hop off Route 80 that runs from the George

tResident January 2014

By Bob & Sandy Nesoff Washington Bridge through ski territory. For weekenders Shawnee has accommodations at the base of the slopes and numerous other possibilities nearby. A popular summer resort it converts very easily to winter sports. With a vertical rise of 700 feet and a base elevation of 600 feet, Shawnee has trails for everyone. The summit elevation tops out at 1,351 feet. Its 23 trails cover some 125 skiable acres with the longest run just short of one mile. There are 10 lifts with an uphill capacity of 12,600 per hour, cutting down on time standing in a line. There is a program for everyone with emphasis on children. Adding to the fun as many areas have done, Shawnee offers snow-tubing, night skiing, crosscountry and snowshoe trails.

Just over a half hour from Shawnee in Tannersville (and a hop, skip down the road from the huge Crossings Outlet Center), Camelback Mountain is arguably the most popular of the Eastern Pennsylvania ski resorts. Its vertical rise is 800 feet but the base elevation is 1,240 feet and the summit tops out at 2,133, making t one of the tallest in the state. There are 34 trails over 160 skiable acres and its longest run is about one mile. It also offers night skiing, snow tubing, Nordic skiing and snow shoe trails. As an added adventure and thrill Camelback has one of the better zip line complexes in the Northeast. Camelback’s wide variety of trails range from a major bunny slope outside the main lodge with a real lift (not an arm breaking tow rope)

TRAVEL that gives beginners a terrific opportunity to learn and become accustomed to the down hill run. As with many other resorts Camelback offers programs geared to children, women and adaptive skiers. Lessons for all are available. Here is modern and comfortable base side lodging and a wide variety of options within minutes of the resort ranging from upscale opportunities such as Mr. Airy Resort and Casino to smaller hotels. Camelback is located minutes from the Tannersville exit off Route 80. Just follow the signs. Blue Mountain, near Palmerton, lays claim to being one of the most popular Pennsylvania ski resorts as well as the highest vertical rise at 1,082 feet. It offers five terrain parks and a BigAirBag for practicing aerial maneuvers.

#MVF.PVOUBJOIBTUSBJMTPWFSTLJBCMF acres with the longest run clocking in at 1.2 miles. Whereas most of the other ski areas provide a greater percentage of trails for beginner and intermediate skiers, Blue Mountain aims for the advanced skier. It offers 41% of its trails listed as black and an equal number of greens. Blue trails come in with only 18%

Oddly enough that only tallies up to 18 percent and there is no explanation for the missing 22 percent. Jack Frost offers 21 slopes for all levels of ability. It offers the usual night skiing, tubing, etc. There is no base lodging but a number of choices nearby with some offering ski and stay packages.

Hang in there…snow is on the way.

Near Blakeslee is the combined Big Boulder and Jack Frost area. Big Boulder caters more to snowboarders with its terrain parks and features an outdoor grill and live music; definitely for the younger set. Trail

5 STEPS TO AN EMPOWERED NEW YEAR from Expert Jen Groover

1 2 3 4 5

As you think about the year ahead, avoid making resolutions that merely test your willpower, and instead commit to changing your perspective in 2014. This year, take control of your life by focusing on who you are, why you are here and what life really means to you. Follow these 5 steps to an empowered new year to live the life you truly desire:

B E MO RE MIND F UL. By paying attention to the effects of your every thought and action, you can effectively evaluate which behaviors are beneficial and which are holding you back from the results you desire. Become aware of the outcomes created by every word you choose; how the people you surround yourself with affect your energy and sense of self; how the foods and drinks you consume affect your energy, mental clarity and moods. Even be mindful of how the media you consume can affect your perception of the world. Eliminate people and things that drain you and increase the people and things that increase your energy and lift you up.

HAVE COMPLAINT-F R EE DAYS. My mom had a mantra, “You are not allowed to complain about something unless you are going to do something about it.” This mantra was a gift to teach me to have a “solution-driven” mindset which is positive and productive versus a negative, complaining, and draining mindset which only holds you back.

G RATIT UDE. Gratitude is one of the most powerful emotions that brings peace in every situation. It gives you a mindset of abundance that brings more of what you desire into your life. Be grateful for everything that has happened in your life; good or bad, because all of these circumstances have led you to where you are and where you are going to go.

IN S P IRE AND EMPOWER OTHER S. The most profound transformation begins once you discover the true gift isn’t about gaining power for yourself, but in giving, empowering, and inspiring others. To empower and inspire another is the greatest give we can give.

S MILE MOR E. I know this may sound simple, but hopefully it also sounds profound. Smiling is one of the simplest gestures that can not only turn around the lives of others but can also create a deeper connection between people, giving them a reason to pass on the smile. The positive impact of a smile can truly be life changing.

Will 2014 be the

year of the Bitcoin? By Dr. Jo Webber, Founder and CEO of Oink

L

et’s start from the beginning – what is a Bitcoin? Bitcoin is an open source, peer-to-peer payment network and digital currency introduced in 2009. Okay, so that’s clear! Probably the easiest way to understand it is to look at a recent deal. In December, a Florida man purchased a slightly used Tesla car using 91.4 Bitcoins. One day later, the dealership successfully cashed out 91.4 bitcoins using BitPay, an electronic payment processing system, in exchange for more than $100,000, which was what the customer had agreed to pay for the car. You may have heard that there is a lot of fluctuation in the value of a Bitcoin and that is true. It makes people nervous, but a transaction can clear quickly which allows the exchange rate calculation on the number of Bitcoins to the dollar to remain steady

through that time period-- think of it a bit like foreign currency exchanges. There are some key differences between Bitcoins and credit cards and other payment forms. In December, a man in the UK lost about $7.5M worth of Bitcoins by throwing away a hard drive. The hard drive contained Bitcoins that he had purchased in 2009 when the pricing was low. That ‘money’ is gone. Another key area is that a Bitcoin transaction is untraceable and that opens up Bitcoins to be used for money laundering and other criminal activities. Bitcoin is not the only digital currency – there are others currently and more will probably follow. There are pros and cons to Bitcoins and other digital currencies. While people are talking about a bubble – the basic concept of a digital currency holds a lot of promise for our

modern global digital world. Many teens are up to speed on Bitcoin and it makes perfect sense to them. In December we held a Hackathon for teens and tweens to come and develop an application they thought would be of use to their peers. FAMILY

HEY MOM! IT’S TIME TO GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE! It’s so easy to fall into a routine with the kids, family obligations, responsibilities, and work. One day you just wake up and feel bored and restless, despite being “busy” and running around. You have very little “me” time, let alone have time to try new things. You feel “stuck.”

Tr y t h e s e s i m p l e i d e a s t o b re a k o u t o f y o u r “m o m” c o m f o r t z o n e .

1

Give Back. Volunteer. It’s good for you! The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research,”  (2007) describes the  significant connection between volunteering and good health. People who volunteer have better longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates of depression and less incidence of heart disease! Pressed for time? It takes only 10 minutes to help an elderly neighbor with an errand or send a card to someone who is blue.

2

Nuture Your Relationships. Have lunch with your favorite Uncle that you haven’t seen in a while, plan a romantic evening with your significant other or make plans for lunch with the friend you lost touch with for no reason. Relationships are important to your well-being.

3

Make a Call, Move Forward. Trying to quit something? Do you need an expert opinion on your relationship, your outdated wardrobe or your daily diet? Call someone for help when you need it.

4

Build Your Brand. Update your resume, network and start making moves toward your dream job. If you’ve been out of the workforce for a while, take just one step toward (re) building your brand: write an article, be a part of a professional panel, mentor a junior colleague.

5

Tell a Friend. Already giving up on your resolutions? According to a 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol, women are 10% more successful in sticking to their goals when they share them with someone.

6

Listen, Learn & Laugh. Stop talking and listen more. Learn something new, it’s good for you and don’t forget to laugh! Just the simple act of doing something new or different brightens your mood, changes your perspective and takes you beyond your comfort zone!

7

Music & Masterpieces. Listen to new music – or any music! Visit a museum and gaze at art. Awaken your senses again. You’ll be amazed at how much better you will feel.

8

Make a “52” List! Embrace the 52 “mindset” rather than setting large goals for the New Year. Most people don’t achieve their resolutions. In fact, only 8% of people are successful! Carve out time for yourself, have some fun, and take some baby steps. You really can’t fail. It’s about simply checking things off as you do them. That’s the 52 Week approach. •

CULTURE

USE, mUSE & amUSE T

emple of the muses’ – so sacred, so much grandeur, all that pressure attached to a single word: ‘museum.’ The fact that many are inspired to quote the etymology of the institution, and spend hours raptly invoking the atypical way in which they experience these renowned bastions of culture means there are way too few actually attending.

By Rory Winston many different museums as there are emotional states. And, as sacrilegious as it may sound, museums are downright entertaining. They are there as much for our amusement as for our education.

GUGGENHEIM GALORE

It is something one associates to foreign countries, something one sets aside a special time of the year to do. It is, for many, an intellectual obligation, a cultural necessity, a way in which to properly pay one’s respects to those who have contributed to our world; it is, in short, a visit to the cemetery.

From its inception, the Guggenheim museum (guggenheim.org) has inflected both the architectural and the artistic landscape of New York. Like the effect that Gaudi’s idiosyncratic work had on Barcelona, Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece did more than reinterpret the surrounding skyline - it would forever alter our perception of all that dwelt within. The paradigm had shifted; venues were no longer intended to simply house works of art but to engage in a dialogue with them.

Note: there is no such thing as a special ‘museum mood.’ There are as

on mediums nor on periods. Instead, the museum itself is a naturally evolving entity that mutates its themes in response to newly introduced elements. Being a curator á la Guggenheim is an art in its own right. Besides the Christopher Wool exhibition presently running till January 22nd – where the boundaries between physical process and resulting work are intriguingly blurred – February will see No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia, an exhibition slated to be one of the most comprehensive artistic examinations of ethnicity, colonialism, identity and the effect of globalization on the region in question. For the vast majority of the paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos and installations in the grouping, this will represent their first US visit. From film screenings to concerts to educational tours with workshops for both adults and children, the Guggenheim remains one of the most stirring forms of entertainment our city has to offer. With the

A TYCOON’S TREASURES: THE FRICK COLLECTION

Besides professional art collectors like Solomon Guggenheim, the early twentieth century was rife with magnates like Cornelius Vanderbilt II who involved themselves in the arts. With J.D. Rockefeller setting the new standard for philanthropy, and Andrew Carnegie following suit, it did not take long for Henry Clay Frick - friend and colleague of the latter - to start amassing an art collection with cultural gravitas.

to the libraries filled with Chinese porcelain and Italian bronzes, this Upper East Side property remains situated forever between the corner of a long forgotten Place d’Armes and a 70th street of our abandoned imagination.

WHITNEY FROM THE BLOCK

As the say in Hip Hop, ‘Whitney’s got street cred’. At a time when highbrow culture in New York was enthralled with all things European and dismissive about the quality of locally produced art, Gertrude Vanderbilt – with the help of an endowment - collected NPSFUIBOXPSLTCZEJĂŞFSFOU"NFSJDBO BSUJTUTBOEPĂŞFSFEUIFNUPUIF.FUSPQPMJUBO museum. The rejection that ensued proved to be fortuitous since it

After surviving an assassination attempt by an anarchist intent on revenge for what he deemed as Frick’s callous disregard of unionized strikers, Frick eventually moved to New York. #Z UIFNBOTJPO that now houses the renowned Frick Collection (frick.org) had been completed. The mansion remains a bastion for art dating from the pre-Renaissance to the post-Impressionist era. With no particular logical or chronological order, it is a testament to the most highly cultivated choices displayed with highly personal – if random - taste. With masterpieces from Titian, El Greco, Bellini, Rembrandt, VelĂĄzquez, Goya, van Dyck and numerous others, the massive house - ensconced as it is - within a sheaf of three magnolias trees is a time capsule for a moment in American history when libertarians fancied themselves as monarchs. At present, our faux dynasty is happily hosting regal works the likes of Vermeer, Rembrandt and Hals – guests from Hague’s Royal Gallery Mauritshuis. But then, such is the life of our nobility manquĂŠ. From the music rooms and garden courts

catalyzed Gerty into opening what would in no time become the Whitney Museum (whitney.org) we know today – a museum still dedicated to finding new American artists. Housed in a muscular modernist block of granite resembling the abandoned tool of a primitive god, the Whitney is home to everything from Rothko to Stella to‌ Well, to be as blunt as the building, with PWFS QBJOUJOHT TDVMQUVSFT ESBXJOHT photographs, videos, films, prints, and new media, the Whitney represents more than 3000 artists from the twentieth century to the present – its annual exhibition being a

reviewer’s paradise for spotting emerging talents. Current exhibitions include Robert Indiana: Beyond Love – an exploration of American identity, racial injustice and the illusion and disillusion of love. Traversed by way of roadside entertainments and highway signs, the journey takes us through the respectively vivid symbols scattered throughout post war Americana. Likewise, Rituals of Rented Island focuses on a performance art that thrived in the radical 70’s wherein artists from fields as disparate as dance, music and visual arts created an experimental environment in which to tackle issues such as contemporary media VS high art. This while T.J. Wlcox’s In the Air is a cinemain-the-round piece where city narratives are told through the eyes of an artist staring out from his apartment window. Juxtaposing myth, memory and the recent information overload, we see a world where history is in a constant state of flux – where construction and disintegration occur simultaneously. In terms of retrospectives, Edward Steichen in UIFT and 30’s is a hypnotic journey through trends and their untimely portrayal. Encompassing all the fashion photos taken under Richard’s tenure as chief photographer for CondĂŠ Nast, it is an exciting take on what could otherwise have passed for footnotes of an era. As for American Legends from Calder to 0,FFĂŞF JUJTBNVTUTFFUIBUNBOBHFT not only to convey a great deal about development in art from the first half of the twentieth century, but is a telling tale of Whitney’s own role in abetting such development since the eighteen leading artists being represented are museum holdings. Why the Whitney? Because occasionally it’s good to know why American artists are so appreciated – at least - abroad.

rom hearty Italian to the exotic tastes of Southeast Asia to haute Japanese, the New York culinary scene has been abuzz with new restaurant openings to satisfy savvy gourmands. We are sure that there is something here for everyone - from the delightfully authentic Rasa to the sinfully delicious Harlow, we have highlighted noteworthy openings and neighborhood favorites to get you through the long winter season. Use this as your guide and you won’t be disappointed.

RASA For a taste of authentic Southeast Asian cuisine, try the cozy Michelin star rated Rasa in the heart of the West Village helmed by Chef Tommy and Camie Lai. Spanning the rich culinary heritage of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and sushi, Rasa serves favorite regional dishes such as the spicy Penang Assam Laksa that takes a spicy lemongrass and tamarind laced fish broth and balances the flavors with prawn paste, mint and pineapple. Other starters to whet the appetite are the crispy chicken popcorn with a chili sauce, crispy soft shell crab, malay curried wings, or spicy tuna pizza with avocado. For the main courses choose from soul warming curries, adventurous and creative sushi rolls, miso black cod, a spicy and sour seafood clay pot, or Thai style stir fried noodles like Indian Mee Goreng, or the spicy and tasty Drunken Noodles. Another specialty is the classic Hainanese chicken from the Hakka region that is steamed with a tasty garlic soy and chili sauce, a perfect place to go to satisfy those pan Asian cravings.

Hakubai, Kitano Hotel For the Japanese, the Kaiseki is an art form that balances the taste, texture, appearance, and colors of food making it the most celebrated and formal culinary tradition of Japanese haute cuisine. With roots in Zen Buddhism using the rituals of a Japanese tea ceremony, this multi course dinner is beautifully presented with careful restraint and uses seasonal ingredients with ornate and edible garnishes. Choose to dine in a Western setting or on tatamis for an authentic Japanese experience. For the Winter, Hakubai is offering a $98 Seasonal Kaiseki with a variety of exotic small traditional tastes like sea urchin in dashi broth, monkfish liver with ponzu sauce, burdock in beef with a yolk sauce. Traditionally it is followed by clear soup, sashimi and a cooked fish appetizer. The main course is the more familiar prime rib, sashimi or tempura, followed by a miso soup to cleanse the palate, finishing off with a dessert. Hakubai is one of the few formal restaurants to experience this artful cuisine that has been part of the Japanese culture for thousands of years.

Harlow Reminiscent of the decadence of a bygone Old Hollywood glamour, Harlow has recreated this elegant ambiance of yesteryear in their swanky seafood centric hotspot housed at the base of the Lombardy hotel. Nobu alum and restaurateur Richie Notar has tapped Executive Chef Danny Ye to create a menu with an Asian influence and created a menu with a lighter touch from his experience in the best kitchens in Los Angeles. Serving some of the best crudo and raw bar selections in the city, start with hand picked oysters, Hamachi, gravlax or ceviche accompanied by yuzu or light mignonette dressings. For indulgent appetizers the lobster truffle mac n cheese and king crab and urchin strozzapreti are a perfect segue way into the main course. A favorite is the Fisherman’s stew brimming with clams, mussels, monkfish, lobster in a delicate cream sauce, or the diver scallops with truffle butter and sunchoke puree. Leave room for the unforgettable and decadent Bananas Zapin created with caramelized bananas accented with caramelized chocolate peanuts and peanut butter gelato. Savor the scene with a frozen Pimms cup with watermelon granite, cucumber, and ginger lime foam, or sip on an old school cocktail and enjoy how the beau monde live. Ilili Alluring, illuminating, with a hint of the illicit, Ilili is the tantalizing tastes of Lebanon piqued by chef Philippe Massoud’s own cosmopolitan flair. Make no mistakes about the Lebanese food; it is a rich culinary tradition that dates back to the Phoenician empire, and one that went through several reinventions with French infusion being the most recent. That their Mezze approach shares much in common with Tapas means that feasting can include anything from twelve to thirty dishes - each invention boasting a variety of unique flavors and approaches. Whether indulging in the Citrus Trout set adrift on a sea of Arugula, smoked almonds and orange tahini, or taking to the land with the tender textures of the mixed grill, Ilili suffuses your palate with herbs and spices that recall an interdisciplinary world of nuance and finesse. As personal favorite go, the Golden Tile Fish served alongside Baby Spinach, Lamb bacon and a Nicoise Olive Consomee is a brilliant juxtaposition of subtle textures and idiosyncratic bursts of essence. With ambient music swelling from between what passes for a cavernous bi-level organ of a space, Ilili is a post-modern take on classical eastern symmetry.

Few are aware, however, that the most likely sensation still lingering on the esteemed candidate’s palate was the afterglow of a meal he recently indulged in while dining at Delmonico’s, a restaurant that preceded the use of the word ‘restaurant’ in the United States by nearly a decade. “But,” as Lou Jacobi said in Irma La Duce, “that’s another story.” There are no lack of stories when it comes to the oldest culinary institution in New York – one whose guest list includes everyone from both Roosevelts, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Nikolas Tesla, Napoleon the Third and J.P. Morgan. Growing in tandem with the financial district that remains its home till this day, Delmonico’s is one of those establishments where the menu reads like a historical saga and each dish is accompanied by an anecdote as memorable as the experience. Walking through the Pompeian pillars flanking the entrance, one is immediately drawn into the mahogany paneled world of the 1800’s, complete with oil paintings, frosted windows, and carpeting thick enough to muffle the sound of the attentive waiters. Biting into legacy means a juicy rib eye Delmonico’s steak, charred to perfection and presented with a robust onion ring for a halo. As for how the idea for holding one of the finest wine cellars of the city came about, well, that came about when Chef Alessandro Fillippini was working for the Delmonico Brothers and… But that’s another story.

And what of Chicken a la King - which was in reality Chicken a la Keene - created by the aforementioned chef after being subject to the rant of a horse breeder, Keene, who had dreamt of a pimento-studded cream sauce? Antoinette DeLuca, Jodie & Diane Fanelli The Dating Council By Isaiah Negron

A

s Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall humorously demonstrated, dating in New York City is not always easy. Knowing what you want in a relationship, coming up with the right things to say, making sure you’re wearing something flattering and that your home is welcoming can all be challenging hurdles when you are courting romance. Standing by to help single men and women work on making their dating dreams come true are the lovely ladies of The Dating Council: Antoinette DeLuca, Jodie Fanelli and Diane Fanelli. These three savvy TriBeCa girls help their clients have a series of successful dates that prepare them for a meaningful relationship. Antoinette says, “Between our formal training in life coaching and styling and our collective experience from the school of life, we realized we had powerful synergies that could have a positive impact on people in the dating world.” Jodie adds, “After coming out of a divorce and going on many dates, I realized there was a need for a service like ours.” Each lady advises on a specific area of their client’s dating life, in essence “reenvisoning” them to better suit their relationship goals. Antoinette, the Council’s Relationship and Design Coach, helps clients “get clear” on the type of relationship they want as well as a plan of action to help them achieve it. DeLuca looks at the sources of the client’s dates and their home environment. “The home is another extension of the person, so I examine how the clients home supports their dating and relationship goals,” says Antoinette. As the Dating Coach, Jodie goes over the Do’s and Don’ts of having a successful date. “We start with mock dates where I identify their positive points as well as areas that they could work on,” she explains. “Then we work on them, whether it’s confidence or just general dating skills.” Jodie puts an emphasis on intimacy, suggesting quieter restaurants that are conducive to conversation and

confidence by editing their wardrobe and helping them find outfits that fit properly and reflect their personality. I also work on their image from head-to-toe, grooming is important,” Diane says. “I’m all about detail.”

The Dating Council’s multipronged approach creates a plan specially tailored to each client, encouraging the best version of themselves to shine through while dating. Diane says, “It is very gratifying, working with clients to enhance their dating life; after that, we’re all very creative, so the sky is the limit!” The Dating Council thedatingcouncil.com

If you find something you love to do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

Greenwich Project’s Nick Boccio & Chef Carmine Di Giovanni By Isaiah Negron From the age of 16, Carmine Di Giovanni dreamed of becoming a chef. He cultivated his love for the culinary arts and honed his cooking skills in the kitchen of a neighborhood restaurant in Staten Island, peeling carrots and prepping dishes. After graduating from the New York Restaurant School at age 20, Carmine developed his own signature style techniques that landed him in some of New York City’s top kitchens. He became the Chef de Cuisine at Picholine and the Executive Chef at David Burke Townhouse. Di Giovanni is now the Executive Chef and a partner of Greenwich Project on West 8th Street. “I cook what I like to serve, not necessarily what I want to eat,” laughs Carmine. “I like mixing different tastes together.” He works with hospitality entrepreneur Nick Boccio who opened Mulberry Project four years ago, creating a speakeasy-style cocktail retreat in New York City’s Little Italy after transitioning out of the trenches of Wall Street where he worked at Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley. Boccio also worked with Bergdorf Goodman, B.R. Guest and 13th Street Entertainment. In April 2013, Boccio opened Greenwich Project with a new American menu created by Di Giovanni. greenwichprojectnyc.com Chef Carmine’s critically acclaimed skills have landed him on Anthony Bourdain’s “No

cooking shows.” Many of Carmine’s unique creations have become famous in culinary circles. His favorite dish “The Odd Couple,” a delicious combination of sautéed snails, sweetbreads and garlic “foam” was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival where “Very Good Girls” stars Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen raved about his lunch. His hamachi

crudo with sesame bon bon and citrus soy was recently voted the “People’s Favorite Dish” at “Taste of Lower East Side,” an annual foodie event held in April. When Greenwich Project debuted their new brunch menu, Chef Carmine put a twist on the traditional lox and bagel, devising a pastrami-cured salmon with “broken” bagel bites, cream cheese powder and mustard seed relish. Innovative dishes like this have garnered him praise from The New York Times Taste of T and at the New York Food and Wine Festival, as well as the opportunity to be the Executive Chef of the New York Luxury Review 2013, an exclusive press showcase and shopping experience displaying the latest in luxury products and services. Between his passion for cooking and love for playing with different flavors and textures Chef Carmine is one of the city’s elite chefs. With his eyes on a Michelin Star for Greenwich Project in 2014, Carmine concluded, “My parents told me if you find something you love to do, you’ll never work a day in your life and I haven’t worked a day yet.” Chef Carmine Di Giovanni cd@carminedigiovanni.com carminedigiovanni.com

I realized there was a need for original Christmas music.

Shea, The Prince of Christmas & The Wizard of Song

F

irst Grammy Ballot artist Shea Arender, a.k.a. The Prince of Christmas, began singing from the age of seven in New Orleans. His first on-stage appearance was at twelve when he sang in a rock tribute show. “I covered some classics by Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley,” he remembers. “I knew I was supposed to perform on stage after that.” Growing up near New Orleans, Shea was influenced by the legendary music and feel that The Big Easy is known for. “It was part of my culture, just being around the environment,” explains Shea. “To this day, outside of Christmas music, I’m a big jazz and Motown guy.” In addition to his holiday songs, Shea draws from an extensive repertoire of musical genres from jazz and R&B to funk and country music for his concerts from NYC to Vegas. shealive.com In 2009, inspired by a holiday trip to Alabama on a cold winter night, he wrote his first single, “A Christmas Love Affair.” His composing and songwriting continued, fueled by a desire to

By Isaiah Negron give the world new holiday songs. “I realized there was a need for original Christmas music,” Shea says. “We’ve all been singing the same songs for years. I wanted to take it into the new millennium, keeping the classic Christmas feel but making it modern.” Last year, Shea released his second holiday album, “Every Day’s Christmas”, from Lost Gold Records that featured his hit single “The Christmas I Met You.” The single shot to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts and landed at #61 on the “Merry Christmas Network Top 100 Christmas Songs of All Time”. He also made the first Grammy Ballot for “Song of the Year” in the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. The media immediately dubbed the debonair crooner “The Prince of Christmas.” When he’s not singing, dancing, acting or creating lyrics, Shea writes poetry and hikes to relax and clear his mind remarking, “Sometimes you can even do them together!” Last November, Shea made his off-Broadway

debut in the critically acclaimed “SHEA – Prince of Christmas,” a holiday music show that took audiences on a worldwide journey showcasing the globally diverse celebrations of Christmas. His next performance will be in “The Wizard of Song,” a soulful tribute to the legendary “Oz” composer Harold Arlen. Shea takes on the role of Johnny Mercer, Arlen’s writing partner and fellow songwriter. “I’m very excited to be playing Mercer,” he says. “He was from Georgia so playing that Southern disposition is a natural role for me and his songs are tailor-made for a baritone.” The song Shea is most excited to perform is “One For My Baby,” made famous by Frank Sinatra. Shea will be joining the show’s talented cast at the end of this month. “The Wizard of Song” plays in Midtown on 46th Street at St. Luke’s Theatre. What Does Google Know About Me? By Thomas F. La Vecchia, MBA

I

t’s safe to say that most of us use search engines such as Google as the go-to when in search of general information, answers, products, venues and countless other things. But what if someone is searching you? If you can find everything you need on Google, it has to be asked, can someone find anything they need to know about you?   When consulting for companies who claim to be utilizing digital marketing I have them do a quick exercise. “Type in the name of your company here,” I tell them, pointing to the search box on Google. Often times, people are in shock of the results that are generated; bad customer reviews, old websites, social media accounts thought to be deactivated…and the list goes on. A large part of digital marketing is reputation management, and the same goes for individuals.   As we sign up for online services, open social media accounts, blog, comment and share we are leaving footprints all over the web. Results generated by typing your name into Google can be shocking. Old photos under Google Images, various accounts you have opened over the years and social media properties are all following your name.   The power of Google isn’t going anywhere, so instead of being fearful of the loss of (what many deem as) privacy, people today need to learn how to control what’s out there. Search Engine results can affect job prospects, personal relationships and can even to lead identity theft.   Learning about Google is highly recommended. Certain features like Google Alerts, checking your search results often, controlling the information you share and finally being aware of how websites use your information, is something to stay on top of in the digital age. thesalesexpertusa.com
