With the opening of MARTA station pedestrian bridges and a new north entrance set for June 24, Buckhead is one step closer to the Community Improvement District’s “walkability” goal. The $32 million bridge at the 3360 Peachtree Road station spans Ga. 400, connecting two sides of Buckhead for both pedestrians and transit users. “The bridge really serves two purposes,” said Buckhead CID Executive Director Jim Durrett. “One purpose is connectivity, [while] the new entrance immediately makes a lot of properties accessible to transit to a degree they are not already.” The CID, a self-taxing entity made up of area businesses that invests tax dollars into the district, helped compile the funding for the project and contributed $1.2 million. Longtime Buckhead resident Gordon Certain said the pedestrian bridges will cut oﬀ about ¼ mile for those living in his North Buckhead neighborhood to walk to the train. “The new bridge and MARTA station are really good for our neighborhoods,” said Certain, secretary for the Buckhead

The Atlanta Public School Board on June 2 announced the hiring of three new principals for Buckhead schools. Eﬀective July 1, Curtis Douglass will take the helm at North Atlanta High School, where he previously served as assistant principal; Woodbridge “Buck” Greene Jr. will fill the top spot at Sutton Middle; and Kara Stimpson will take over at Brandon Elementary. The hirings follow a period of uncertaintly. On April 17 it became public that both North Atlanta High School Principal Dr. Howard “Gene” Taylor and Sutton Middle School Principal Audrey Sofianos had announced that they would not return next school year. It was the second time since September that Taylor had quit, though he returned to his position just days after that

announcement. Sofianos indicated in a letter to Sutton families she was leaving to focus on health and family, and could not continue in a full-time position. Additonally, Morris Brandon Elementary Principal Karen Evans was one of seven APS principals reportedly told in March by the system that they would not be returning to their jobs next year. Soon after the announcements, North Atlanta Parents for Public Schools (NAPPS) noted that the school system had 19 principal vacancies district-wide. NAPPS wrote, “This shows there is a bigger theme than just our cluster. We need our district to alter their model and we need the new BOE to act now.” Ten new principals were named in June, following nine appointments in May, in total filling the 19 vacancies.

Buckhead CID to vote on millage rate

The Buckhead Community Improvement District plans to vote on a proposed tax rate of 3 mills at its June 24 meeting. The millage rate has remained steady since 2009. The CID’s proposed assessed taxable value for 2014 is $1,546,489,079, a 3 percent increase from last year. The meeting will be held at 3340 Peachtree Road, Tower Place, 100 Building, 15th Floor, Regent Partners Conference Room, Atlanta.

200 trees slated for Chastain Park Trees Atlanta plans to plant 200 native specimen trees in Chastain Park as

part of a Members’ Woodland to honor 200 new members. The trees will include oaks, elms and dogwoods, and will be part of the new network of playground and path projects in the park. “Trees Atlanta has been an invaluable resource in Atlanta, and we are honored they have selected Chastain Park for this initiative. 200 native trees will provide a wonderful learning and beautification opportunity to our two current initiatives - a new playground and the widening of the Powers Ferry PATH trail,” said Chastain Park Conservancy Executive Director Rosa McHugh. Apartment complex boom continues in Buckhead BY COLLIN KELLEY Atlanta has gone apartment crazy over the past year, with dozens of complexes in the works, just announced or looking for funding. A recent survey by Rent.com and FlatRate Moving indicated that Atlanta was No. 3 for the fastest growing cities for renters in the country (New Orleans and Austin were 1 and 2, respectively). While Atlanta went through a boom and bust in condos before the recession, the need for apartments in the ever-growing city is likely not to diminish anytime soon. There’s also been rent creep, with studios and small one-bedrooms in prime areas (Ponce City Market, the Atlanta BeltLine) now well above the $1,200 range. Below is a progress report on some Buckhead apartments under construction and “projects to watch” that might become reality or remain a pipedream.

Buckhead residents fight another church project in historic neighborhood The Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta and Archbishop Wilton Gregory recently came under fire for their decision to build a $2.2 million mansion for Archbishop Gregory on Habersham Road. Archbishop Gregory has since apologized for this decision, which was widely criticized by members of the Catholic Church as lavish, and indicated that he will vacate the Habersham Road home and move into more modest accommodations. But there is another, more expensive, controversy involving the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta that is brewing just down the street at 136 West Wesley Road in the Peachtree Heights West neighborhood. For many decades, the single family residence served as the home to Atlanta’s Catholic archbishops. The archbishops were a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and the residents of Peachtree Heights West enjoyed having the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta as a neighbor. The Archdiocese has since sold the house to Christ the King Church for $1.9 million, however, and many residents are concerned about the church’s plans to construct a rectory on the premises. In a 2013 Buckhead Reporter article, many Peachtree Heights West neighbors learned for the first time that Christ the King intends to relocate the church rectory, which currently sits on the Christ the King campus on Peachtree Road. To accomplish this feat, Christ the King will spend up to $1 million to build a 2,978-square-foot, two-story dormitory with four bedroom suites in the location of the current garage on the property. The plans also call for a substantial renovation to the existing single family home, which will include an additional three bedrooms, an expansive kitchen, two eating areas, a chapel, a large priests’ den complete with full bar, and a library. The rectory will house up to six priests, and the total cost of the project will likely exceed $3 million. Upon learning about the rectory plans, many Peachtree Heights West residents expressed dismay that such a structure could be built in the midst of a neighborhood zoned for single family use. Upon further investigation, the residents learned that Christ the King obtained the building permit for the rectory without going through the process to obtain a special use permit, which would have required an impact analysis, and review and comment by Neighborhood Planning Unit B and the city of Atlanta Zoning Review Board. Christ the King has maintained that they are not required to go through this process.

In a neighborhood like Peachtree Heights West, which is zoned R-2A Single Family Residential, the only permitted principal uses and structures are single family detached dwellings, public schools and structures incidental to the operation of MARTA. Any use that is not customarily incidental and subordinate to the principal use of a single family home, such as a garage, greenhouse W. WRIGHT or swimming pool, requires a special MITCHELL use permit. A church rectory, which is a commonly recognized accessory GUEST COLUMNIST structure of the church with which it is aﬃliated, requires such a special use permit. The special use permitting process ensures that the interests of the neighborhood are appropriately considered before the construction of a potentially incompatible structure is undertaken. Peachtree Heights West residents are proud of its history. Developed in 1910, Peachtree Heights West is the only known suburb designed by the illustrious New York architectural firm of Carrere and Hastings. Many nationally and locally noted landscape architects and residential architects designed its homes and gardens. Peachtree Heights West was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. In 2006, the Cultural Landscape Foundation named Peachtree Heights West an “at risk” neighborhood. To ensure that the historic character and quality of life in Peachtree Heights West is protected, Christ the King should go through the special permitting process like any other organization proposing a similar non-conforming project. At a recent meeting between Christ the King oﬃcials and Peachtree Heights West neighbors, however, Christ the King indicated that it does not intend to obtain a special use permit. This decision, unfortunately, raises the possibility that Christ the King may spend $3 million to build a rectory that cannot be lawfully occupied.

My second home is my minivan I have a home away from home. I don’t go there for holidays; I go there because it’s part of my job. If you’re a mom you know what I’m talking about. My second home is my minivan. All the essentials of a household are contained within its automatic sliding doors. Let me show you around. First and foremost is the center of any house: the kitchen. It is located primarily in a cloth bag hanging on a hook on the back of the driver’s seat, where food and beverages can be found. If we dig deep enough, we can produce a protein bar, a bag of trail mix, a half-empty water bottle, and most likely, a box of apple juice from last week’s happy meal. The utensil drawer is in the console, which contains a plastic spoon and a Swiss army knife. Thus it is possible to be gridlocked for hours and yet still have the ability to filet a trout and then open a can of fruit cocktail and eat it, too. Adjacent to the kitchen, in a small bag on the opposite hook, is the medicine cabinet. Here we can find whatever we need for minor cuts and burns, headaches, stomach aches, sore throats, fever blisters and bee stings … plus a can of Altoids. If we need a tissue, nail file or collapsible brush, we’ll find it in the ladies’ lounge, of which there are three -- one in each row of the car. They are well-stocked with Bert’s Bee’s Lip Shimmer, tubes of mascara, baby powder, an assortment of magazines and some moist towelettes. The basement is in the rear of the van, where we have a Yoga mat and exercise bands. There is also a rogue golf ball that has been rolling around the car for the last four months, and if you find that, please give it to me.

The mudroom is conveniently located immediately inside the passenger door and holds two umbrellas (one folding, one broken), a rain ROBIN JEAN hat, sun- MARIE CONTE glasses, my walking ROBIN’S NEST shoes and one dirty sock belonging to a teen-aged boy who may or may not be mine. For those days when there is an exceptionally long wait in the carpool line, we have the home office. It’s situated in the plasti-form compartments of the driver’s door, which holds note pads, pens, pencils, school directories, some 7-year-old road maps that I’ll never use and a series of “Learn French in Your Car” CDs. The seats also recline, if I’m ever in need of a bedroom. We paid extra for that feature. In addition, there’s the miscellaneous clutter found in every household: an Ace Hardware $5 cash-card, a piece of paper that entitles my boys to a free Icedream from Chick-filA, and a stack of Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons (because they never expire). Student group won’t let park go to the dogs BY LESLIE WILLIAMS JOHNSON When Mount Vernon Presbyterian School challenged students to “make a dent” with positive-impact projects through its Capstone initiative, a group of four juniors and one senior started with a very grand vision. “Originally we were thinking about building our own park, but we realized we don’t have millions of dollars or a couple of years,” said Sierra Middleton, now a rising senior at Mount Vernon and an intern for Reporter Newspapers, who worked with group members Lizzie McLochlin, Anna Shuford, Aundria Douglas and Lavender Zhang. And so a new, more feasible project to benefit canines and their humans in Sandy Springs was born. “Our idea is to have an area with agility obstacles, some A-line ramps, tire tunnels, add in some benches, add in some dog house-type structures, and we’re going to be adding in bushes, trees and flower beds toward the entrance,” Middleton said. The group researched the cost of all the materials needed, coming up with $1,500. “That includes everything in our plan. We’re also planning on building a couple of the things,” she said. Mark Sluzky, a Mount Vernon teacher, served as a mentor for the Capstone project, and was on the

panel that heard the group’s pitch about improving the dog park. “I felt it was a project that was scaled correctly and could be implemented,” Sluzky said, via email correspondence. “I was excited that they were looking into the community and identifying an area of need. “ “Overcoming adversity and making formal presentations were two of the biggest takeaways for the team,” Sluzky said. “They had to pivot several times to keep their project viable, and made several highstakes presentations to city and business leaders to earn approval for their project.” The city of Sandy Springs liked the students’ idea and urged the group to talk to the company from which it leases the land, Georgia Power. It, too, gave their plans the nod. The team has turned to the crowd sourcing site indiegogo.com, drumming up $250 of the $500 it seeks through the fundraising effort. In addition, the students plan to sell banners to companies who want to advertise inside the park. “Our project, unlike many, is not a direct contributor to the entire world but rather our world in Sandy Springs, Georgia,” the students wrote under “the impact” description on indiegogo. Residents have wanted upgrades for

some time, the group stated, “and we are finally taking action and doing what they want.” The campaign on indiegogo was slated to end on June 9. The students, who received high honors on the project, would like to finish the improvements by the end of June. “It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s definitely going to be worth it because we’re making a difference in our community,” Middleton said. “It’s been a good experience to interact with the city of Sandy Springs, and gives real-world experience that will take us really far.”

Art exhibit draws pastel enthusiasts, community to Oglethorpe BY MARTHA NODAR Professional artists and art enthusiasts alike recently gathered at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art for the opening of the Southeastern Pastel Society’s 16th International Juried Exhibition, now showing through June 22. Buckhead resident Melissa Saulsbury stopped in contemplation at Margaret Dyer’s “Rosza Resting,” one of the largest pieces in the exhibit depicting a female figure. “This is a very unique style for figure painting,” she said. “It has a lot of color, and the light invokes a sense of peace.” Art student Sekari Smith noticed the abstract effect of the brushstrokes. “There is a sense of harmony achieved through the use of colors,” Smith said. “It

seems to be glowing and leading to a feeling of early morning.” While this was Smith’s first visit to the Oglethorpe museum, many local patrons look forward to the society’s international juried exhibits, which are held at Oglethorpe every two years, and bring people from all over the Southeast and the North. These international exhibits give society members an opportunity to reconnect with each other. That was the case with Atlanta artist and society member Marsha Savage, who ran into Liz Haywood-Sullivan, the president of the International Association of Pastel Societies who traveled from Boston to be one of the exhibition’s jurors. “I have known Liz for several years,”

Quick bites: News you can eat The Cheesecake Factory, Zinburger Wine and Burger Bar and True Food Kitchen have opened at Lenox Square in Buckhead. All three restaurants are located at Lenox’s revamped main entrance that includes a two-story glass storefront and a redesigned porte-cochere. New to Atlanta are Zinburger Wine and Burger Bar, which offers gourmet burgers, salads, shakes and wine, and True Food Kitchen, which has a menu based on Dr. Andrew Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet. Menu options will include kale, quinoa, seabuckthorn and acai. Restaurateur Okan Ozyurteri has opened his latest concept, Kabob Land, at 3137 Piedmont Road in Buckhead. The menu includes Middle Eastern dishes with Turkish, Lebanese and Greek influence. Kabob Land’s menu features traditional “Mezzes,” salads, kabob platters, pita wraps and flatbreads. Chef Gerry Klaskala has announced he will open Atlas (atlasrestaurant.com), a new dinner-only restaurant, inside The St. Regis Atlanta in Buckhead. Featuring American cuisine with the freshest local ingredients, Atlas will open in late fall 2014. Petite Auberge (petiteauberge.com) turns 40 this summer and is celebrating by adding Sunday brunch to its menu. The Cooking Channel has launched a new show, Belly Up!, hosted by Atlantabased chef Eddie Russell. BY ART HUCKABEE Are you one of those people who get their lunch or dinner at the grocery store? You’re probably thinking, “Most everyone buys what they eat at a grocery store.” Well, I didn’t mean it quite that way. I’m talking about those of you out there, myself included, who often get a sub sandwich combo at the Publix deli or “meat and three” at the Whole Foods salad and hot food bar. Would you like to step your “grocery store dining” up several notches? If so, then visit Star Provisions. Located in the same West Midtown space as the highly-acclaimed Bacchanalia, and owned by the same folks, Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison, Star Provisions is a foodie’s paradise with individual markets for meat, wine, seafood and cheese, along with cookware and culinary bric-a-brac and… they serve lunch. A recent visit found quite a crowd. There’s lots of helpful, white-aproned staff to turn the horde into a line and hand out paper menus. You’ll pass by the homemade sides in one refrigerated cabinet, and another has cold beverages. Try to resist buying some of the fresh produce nearby. On our visit, we saw beefsteak tomatoes the size of softballs that looked ready for a Gourmet magazine photo shoot. The line moves quickly, but you’ll still have ample time to gaze at the homemade desserts, carefully “marketed” in a glass case just by the register where you order your lunch. There’s plenty to choose from – an assortment of salads, fresh baked bread goods, and even a “blue plate” special, which is often fried chicken and rumored to be very good. Everything is made-to-order so you take your drink, sides, dessert and maybe a tomato or two and head to an inside or outside table. They bring the rest of your food to you when it’s ready; pretty nice for a grocery store. We were in a sandwich mood, so we each ordered from the lengthy and varied list. There’s everything from a peanut butter and marshmallow crème on white bread to a Vietnamese “Bahn Mi” with glazed pork belly, shoulder and pickled chili to a New Orleans favorite, the muffaletta with provolone, mortadella, copa,

sopressa and olive salad. There’s even a house made hot dog. We opted for the prosciutto and parmesan on a baguette, the pastrami reuben and the shrimp po’ boy. The Italian version of a ham and cheese was simple yet elegant. The only condiment, sweet butter, provided just the right balance to the saltiness of the prosciutto and the parmesan. The fresh baguette was crunchy and light. The reuben contained house cured and smoked pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. While it couldn’t compete in the size category with many of its brethren found in New York City delis, it did have a good balance of flavors. The shrimp po’ boy, considered by many to be the best in this landlocked city, was very good. The lightly battered and fried shrimp were perched atop a buttery hoagie roll that was adorned with lettuce, tomato, pickles and Cajun mayonnaise. It rivaled many found closer to saltwater. We also tried two of the sides, the roasted asparagus with leek vinaigrette and Southern-style potato salad. The asparagus were in bite-sized pieces and fork tender. The leek vinaigrette added a tart, springtime freshness. The potato salad evoked memories of what my Southern mother and grandmother used to make with bits of hardboiled egg, red onion, yellow mustard, fresh herbs and of course, mayonnaise, homemade at that; it was delicious. We couldn’t resist sampling a few sweet baked goods. The Mexican wedding cookies were melt-in-your-mouth good. The shortbread was golden, rich and tender, with just the right amount of sweetness. Save time after lunch for a walk through the market. Hopefully with a full stomach you won’t buy quite so much, but it’s a certainty you’ll probably buy something… after all it’s a grocery and there’s always dinner. Jake Mercer is a true Renaissance man. The recent Lovett graduate excels in areas ranging from debate to Chinese to music. Jake says he has been fascinated by the complexities of the Chinese language ever since he began studying the language six years ago. On the Speech and Debate Team, Jake mentored new members and practiced rhetoric. As a member of the Academic team, Jake has furthered his knowledge of history, as well as developed a healthy sense of competition. “I love the tournaments because they’re really exhilarating, tangible forms of competition, but due to a substantial lack of interest at Lovett we rarely have enough people to go to tournaments,” Jake said. “But we still hold practice every day and compete with each other.” Jake’s love of music has proved a respite from the rigors of his demanding extracurricular schedule. “Music is by far my favorite form of expression, and both orchestral and choral music lend themselves really well to catharsis,” said Jake. Jake says he enjoys choir for its focus on the poetry of lyrics. As a member of the Georgia Boy Choir, Jake has performed in Austria, Russia, Ukraine and England. Jake will culminate his career with the choir this summer with a voyage to England to sing evensong services at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. While many students might be hesitant to try something new their senior year, Jake starred in his first-ever play, “The Glass Menagerie,” this spring. Jake suspects his interest in theater won’t end after he graduates from high school. “Acting gives me an environment to create a new person and lets me inhabit them to the point where you can forget your normal self for awhile,” Jake said. “Jake is the consummate scholar,” said Director of Service Learning Angela Morris-Long. “He is curious about everything, and is so engaged in his studies. Jake’s involved in all aspects of school life, and he does it all at the highest level. I have never met a high school student who has achieved so much in so many areas.”

Council of Neighborhoods. “We’ve supported [the project] since it was planned.” Running by the MARTA station will be a greenway, under construction, that will eventually connect to the Atlanta BeltLine. The five-mile, $10 million PATH400 will extend from Loridans Drive to the beltline’s Peachtree Creek spur trail. Denise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead, said the path’s connection to the MARTA station and the beltline will enable pedestrians to connect to the entire city. Livable Buckhead, a nonprofit, is partnering with the CID and PATH Foundation on the project. “You don’t realize how connected everything can be; that’s what the trail really starts to achieve,” she said. Certain said that the trail runs through his neighborhood, and while some residents are concerned about the path by their backyards, he thinks they’ll get used to it. “I did some survey work and found that people who regularly use

multipurpose trails were much more favorable because they have much more familiarity with them,” he said. The projects don’t end with bridges and trails. The Peachtree Transformation project aims to make the roadway more attractive and pedestrian friendly by adding wider sidewalks, bike lanes and updated lighting. Phases 1 and 2 from Roxboro Road to Maple Drive are complete, and Phases 3 and 4 are in the design phase, stretching from Maple to Sheridan Drive. Also in the works, widening of the Piedmont and Habersham roads intersection, which will make it safer for motorists and pedestrians, Durrett said. Still, Certain says improvements are still needed to accommodate increasing traﬃc. “The way the urban part of Buckhead developed was not pedestrian-oriented, so having the trail and more emphasis on walkability is good. But, we’re not building any more roads. We need to be smarter and more careful in what we build.”

The Atlanta History Center is offering a new series, “Civil War to Civil Rights,” examining how these events shaped both Atlanta and the United States.

Atlanta History Center ties Civil War and Civil Rights BY JENNA GOFF The Civil War marked a major turning point for Atlanta and the United States as a whole. It was a battle that began the long struggle for freedom that culminated in the Civil Rights Movement. In its new series, “Civil War to Civil Rights,” the Atlanta History Center aims to examine these pivotal years. “The series is designed to continue the exploration of our American history from the 1860s through the 1960s, and explore how these events shaped Atlanta and our nation,” said the center’s Senior Director of Marketing Leigh Massey. The series investigates the diﬀerent events and people that led the country, and Atlanta in particular, from a time of slavery and separation, to equal freedoms and opportunities. “We want to show that the two historical events Atlanta is best known for – the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement – are connected to each other and part of a larger context,” said Gordon Jones, the center’s curator and senior military historian. The exhibitions, extending well into next year, illuminate these events and prod the audience to search for the connections and deeper meanings. One exhibit, “The Confederate Odyssey: The George W. Wray Jr. Civil War Collection,” will display an extensive collection of rare confederate artifacts and the stories that accompany them. The bloodstained coat of a 17-year-old soldier killed in the Battle of Chickamauga will be featured. “Here was an American soldier who gave his life for a cause – and what exactly was that cause? It really makes you think,” Jones said.

The other exhibitions have similar goals. Ranging from displays of African American artifacts to an examination of the history behind “Gone With the Wind,” they all intend to provoke thought over the course of American history since the Civil War. The center is also providing many programs along the same theme. One of the most prominent is Juneteenth, happening June 21-22. Juneteenth is a celebration of the emancipation from slavery in the United States, and consists of theater, kidfriendly activities, storytelling and workshops. It takes place on a Wells Fargo Free Admission Weekend. Subsequent programs include summer camps, lectures, performances, historical re-enactments and more. “There will be something engaging for guests of all ages and interests,” Massey said. “Civil War to Civil Rights” additionally includes a number of partnership initiatives. The Atlanta History Center has partnered with organizations from Georgia Public Broadcasting to the Lovett School to present events through various platforms. These initiatives plan to be informative and fun. “You get to not only see the history re-created,” Jones said, “but also touch and hear and smell it.” The series will extend over the summer and into 2015. “We plan to keep the series of “Civil War to Civil Rights” ongoing to further explore these two pivotal events in our nation’s history,” Massey said. Dear Neighbor: I write on behalf of the Pink Pony, an adult entertainment club located near the southernmost boundary of Brookhaven in a commercial area. Our business has been embroiled in a legal ﬁght with the City of Brookhaven that is wasting your money. Pink Pony has been in existence since 1992 without any legal problems. The Pink Pony paid approximately $500,000 annually to Dekalb County in taxes and licensing fees that could go to the City of Brookhaven. Brookhaven has, thus far, refused to accept these fees, opting instead to attempt to regulate the business out of existence.

The Pink Pony exists in part as the result of an agreement with Dekalb County which effectively and legally prevents other adult clubs from coming into existence in Dekalb County. Brookhaven could adopt this agreement or negotiate their own agreement, thereby preventing new clubs from coming into the area. Chamblee has accepted the Dekalb settlement and allows adult entertainment to exist under a similar agreement. It’s a fact that Grandfathering has successfully allowed established clubs to remain in existence while preventing new clubs from opening.

RA P E  3300 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A rape was reported on May 27. A woman met the suspect at the location to have drinks. She told the suspect that she needed to charge her phone, and the suspect invited her to his room. She said the suspect pushed her onto his bed and forcibly engaged in sexual intercourse. The front desk staff said they saw the victim and suspect exit the hotel while engaged in casual conversation. The victim later returned to the hotel and called 911, advising she was raped.  900 block of Oak Valley Road, NE – A rape was reported on May 29. A woman said the suspect followed her on Lenox Road and grabbed her by her arm at the intersection of Lenox Road and Wright Avenue. She said the suspect dragged her approximately 500 hundred feet down the middle of the street, and pulled her toward an abandoned lot at the intersection of Oak Valley Road and Wright Avenue, where he forcibly engaged her in sexual intercourse. She said she tried to pull away and yelled “no” several times during the assault. In the hours prior to the victim’s report, there had been a heavy rain storm, and the lot where the victim said she was assaulted was saturated when investigators arrived. Her shoes did not have any grass clippings or moisture on them, and her off-white dress did not have any noticeable tears, grass stains or other noticeable damage. There were no bruises on the victim’s arms, shoulders or knees, and no abrasions on her palms. A sexual assault kit was completed at Grady Hospital and ID photographed the victim’s hands, arms and knees. No cameras were located during the preliminary investigation.

AS S A U LT  1900 block of Piedmont Road, NE – An ag-

gravated assault was reported on May 20. The suspect pulled a knife on a man and fled in a black stretch vehicle. The vehicle was located traveling south on Piedmont Road. The suspect refused to comply with the officer’s verbal commands during the stop, but was detained. The victim responded to the scene and positively identified the suspect.  1500 block of Piedmont Avenue, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on May 22. A woman was told to leave the location because she constantly causes a disturbance. She refused, and when police arrived, she was acting belligerent with security and the police officer. She attempted to stab the officer in the neck with a six-inch toothpick, making contact with his skin, causing lacerations.

 1100 block of Woodland Avenue, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on May 26. A man heard a knock on his door and when he opened it, his neighbor yelled that he was tired of him snitching, then, sprayed him in the face with pepper spray. The suspect was located at his home, and he said he only pepper sprayed the victim’s dog. The pepper spray can was recovered.  1400 block of W. Paces Ferry Road, NW – An aggravated assault was reported on May 29. A woman said at Piedmont Hospital that her live-in boyfriend threw water on her, wrestled and pinned her on the bed, and slammed her on their couch after they argued over text messages. She was in a sling and splint, and was diagnosed with comminuted, slightly impacted fractured tuberoses of the right humeral head.

 200 block of Deering Road, NW – An aggravated assault was

reported on May 24. A man and his friends were walking to an apartment when they exchanged words with the maintenance man. He yelled at them to be quiet. The maintenance man pulled out a black revolver, pointed it at the victim, and the victim put his hands in the air. The suspect left and was not located when ofﬁcers went to an apartment look for him. No injuries were reported.  1st block of Pharr Road, NW – An aggravated assault was reported on May 25. The suspect pushed the victim into a glass table after the victim called the suspect’s girlfriend fat, causing an open laceration on the victim’s right wrist. The suspect and victim are neighbors. No one answered the door when ofﬁcers went to check the suspect’s apartment.  Northside Drive, NW/I-75 SB Ramp, NW – An aggravated assault was reported on May 25. A woman was in a verbal dispute with her

R O BBERY  700 block of Sidney Marcus Boulevard, NE – A commercial

robbery was reported on May 20. Two young men entered the gas station and walked around the candy section. They walked out and then returned. One of them approached the cash register and presented a silver handgun. He demanded money from the register. The clerk handed him the cash register drawer that contained about $80. They ﬂed the scene in a dark colored Acura. No injuries. There may be video of the incident.

 4300 block of Roswell Road, NE – A pedestrian robbery was reported on May 21. A woman was walking through the parking lot of her boyfriend’s apartment complex when she was approached by a man who pointed a black gun at her. She said when he pointed the gun at her, she raised her jacket in front of her face and held out her arm with her purse on it. The man took the purse and ran down the driveway between the buildings.

 2100 block of Monroe Drive, NE – A pedestrian robbery was reported on May 21. The arrestee was seen pushing the victim into a carwash in the area, and punching her in the face. He stole her cellphone.  3500 block of Piedmont Road, NE – A pedestrian robbery was reported on May 23. The two victims were offered a ride by three suspects, from the Kroger to the Marriott. While in route, the suspects drew their weapons and demanded phones and money from the victims. The victims gave the suspects their phones and jumped out of the moving vehicle for their safety.

B U R G L A RY  2000 block of Defoors Ferry Ramp, NW – A commercial burglary was reported on May 19. Someone pried open the side door of the business, entered, and stole copies of employee pay stubs. There may be video of the incident.  1st block of Peachtree Valley Road, NE – A residential burglary was reported on May 23. No signs of forced entry. A woman said someone entered her apartment with a key, sat on her bed and rufﬂed the sheets, opened three of her drawers, but did not take anything. The suspect left a sticky note on her front door that read, “Trusting your prophet, so shall you prosper.” The woman said this was the third time that such a weird event occurred in her apartment, and she has only lived there for three weeks. She was adamant that no one knows where she lives.  2000 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A residential burglary was reported on May 25. When a man returned to his apartment building, his friend yelled at him, saying he wanted his stuff out of the apartment. When the victim got to his apartment, a red ﬁre extinguisher and the silver front door knob were lying in front of his door. The victim said he never entered the apartment building.
