World events

• Marshal Josip Broz Tito is chosen president of Yugoslavia on Jan. 14. • Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia form the Baltic Pact on Feb. 28. • Joseph Stalin dies March 5 after suffering a stroke March 1. He is succeeded by Goergy Malenkov, who would battle with Nikita Khrushchev for control until 1955.

• Ian Fleming publishes his first James Bond novel, “Casino Royal,” on April 13. • Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay become the first men to reach the summit of Mt. Everest on May 29. • Queen Elizabeth II is coronated June 2 at Westminster Abbey. • The Soviet Union sends troops to East Berlin on June 17 to quell the Workers Uprising. • Egypt declares itself a republic June 18. • Armed conflict in the Korean War ends July 27 with the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement.

• The CIA helps overthrow the Iranian government Aug. 19 and leaves Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in power. • David Ben-Gurion resigns Nov. 5 as prime minister of Israel. • President Eisenhower delivers his “Atoms for Peace” adress to the United Nations on Dec. 8.

U.S. News

• More than 70 percent of all televisions in the U.S. are turned to “I Love Lucy” on Jan. 19 to watch the birth of Little Ricky — setting a record that still stands today. • Georgia approves the first literature censorship board in the U.S. on Feb. 19. • Mickey Mantle hits a 565-foot home run at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C., on April 17 — believed to be the longest home run in baseball history by many historians.

• An F5 tornado hits Waco, Tex., on May 11, killing 114 people. • The second Kinsey Report, “Sexual Behavior in the Human Female,” is published Aug. 18. • President Eisenhower appoints Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the United States on Oct. 5. • Hugh Hefner publishes the first issue of “Playboy” magazine Dec. 1.

Technology

• President Harry Truman announces Jan. 7 that the U.S. developed the hydrogen bomb. The Soviets would follow suit Aug. 8. • James Watson and Francis Crick of the University of Cambridge announce their discovery of the DNA molecule on Feb. 28. • The Academy Awards is broadcast on television for the first time March 19. • Jonas Salk announces his polio vaccine March 26. • The first Chevrolet Corvette is built June 30 in Flint, Mich. • The Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket becomes of the first aircraft to reach Mach 2 on Nov. 20. • The FCC approves color television Dec. 17. The first sets will go on sale Dec. 30.
