l Experts believe that planning for a longer, healthier life is no longer an option in the 21st century. According to a report published by Grey Advertising and Sweeney Research, babies born between 1946 and 1964 are still rewriting the rule book on how to live out their golden years, often planning a second or ‘encore career’. Carol Weaving, top South African marketer and managing director of Thebe Exhibitions and Projects, said the market is responding to the reality, as retired citizens have significant buying power and are an economic force in their own right. Research conducted by the University of Cape Town’s Unilever Institute and their research partner Synovate, estimates that 1,9 million South Africans older than 40 years and classified between the living standards measure of seven to ten have a combined income of R300-billion. The first South African retirement expo, presented by Century Property Developments, will be held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg from October 28 to 30. On October 29 Grey Power will present a half-day seminar titled Creating ageing for seniors, which will include strategies for wellness and longevity to retired citizens. Visitors to the expo will receive practical tips and advice on aspects such as discount and benefits for retirees. Die opbrengs van die aand gaan gebruik word vir voorkomingsprojekte rondom dwelmgebruik. l Friends of the Rail and the Pretoria Old Motor Car club will come together to give residents of Pretoria the first Heritage Cars and Trains day on October 30. It promises to be a fun day at the Hermanstad steam train depot in Michaelson Street, Hermanstad, with veteran cars dating back to 1920 and an operating steam locomotive on display. There will also be jumping castles, horse rides, face painting, quad bikes for the children and live music for the whole family. The entrance fee includes a short shuttle on the steam train and picnic facilities with a fire for a braai. The entrance fee does not include the longer two-hour ride on the Tshwane Explorer.
