INFORMATION SUBJECT TO CHANGE

On the Scene with MWR By Sabrina Forrest

I rolled into the Redstone Lanes Bowling Center, to strike up a conversation with the new Bowling Manager Bob Ujvari. Bob just moved to Huntsville from San Antonio, Texas, where he was the Bowling Manager at Lackland Air Force Base’s Bowling Center. Bob is no stranger to the bowling industry; overall he has been in a bowling managerial role for 25 years. He is also a well renowned professional bowler and has bowled in Regional Tournaments as well as High Roller events for over 35 years. When asked his thoughts on the bowling center being voted the “Best Bowling Alley in the Valley,” Bob had this to say. “I feel great for my employees, the manager is basically in the background. It’s a team effort, and my team provides fantastic customer service and they are dedicated to their jobs.” “I would love for the people who come into the center, to be able to have a fun, memorable time and want to come back. It would be great if they tell a friend about their experience, as word of mouth is one of our best marketing tools,” said Bob. Moving forward as the newly appointed Manager, “I would like to incorporate some new events that will be open to both league and family bowlers. The center will become a one-stop-shop for our patrons as we plan to open a pro shop later this year.” For more information on Redstone Lanes Bowling Center, please call 256-842-2695 or visit www.redstonemwr.com.

Working Out in H2O

by Gaylene Wilson, Director, Sports/Fitness/Aquatics

Did you know Redstone Arsenal MWR has an indoor Aquatics Center to meet your fitness needs? Do you currently exercise? Tired of the same routine? Achy bones and joints? If you are not aware of the amazing benefits of swimming for exercise, here are some facts you need to know: swimming, like other forms of exercise, builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. It will help maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs. These are all things we need, right? Did you know through swimming you can also tone muscle and build strength without weights while having less impact on your body! Want to learn how to swim? We can teach you with personalized swim lessons.

Ever thought “I’d like to do aerobics but that pounding is just too hard on my joints” We have the solution. It’s aerobics in the water. Water allows you to do exercises that may be difficult for you on land because 90% of your body is buoyant when in the water up to your neck so you are not hitting the floor hard. No pounding, no jarring and you add 12-14% more resistance when in the water as opposed to being on land. In addition, it is a great social benefit, it’s fun! You can exercise and fellowship with others at the same time. We have several options for pool passes to include daily visits, punch cards and annual passes. To learn more about our Aquatics Program please come visit us at the Redstone Aquatics Center, bldg. 3705 on Aerobee Rd. or give us a call at (256) 313-1200 or (256) 313-1201. Education is the Foundation School’s out for summer which means no more pencils and no more books because it’s time to give our teachers a second look. Redstone Arsenal salutes area superintendents, school principals and personnel at Child, Youth and School Service’s annual “Education Appreciation Luncheon.” The event was made possible through generous support from long time sponsors, Boeing and Redstone Federal Credit Union. The event focused on the extraordinary efforts to understand and address the challenges that military-connected students face. All schools in the Tennessee Valley area were invited to attend this year’s celebration on April 17, 2015. Attendance included approximately 160 individuals from twelve counties including Redstone leadership, superintendents, directors, principals, school staff and education outreach partners. Although the event is not just for the teachers. Each year, students from area schools are involved in the event from the color guard team to bands showcasing their musical talent. Over the years, the event has undergone a large transformation. It started out as an appreciation breakfast with a small group of teachers from schools the Redstone Community attended. Recognizing the need to reach out to surrounding area schools, as not all of our community is within the immediate area, the meeting expanded into the “Education Appreciation Luncheon” that we know today.

Education Appreciation Luncheon 160 individuals ~ 12 counties

32 schools connected

While the luncheon is the capstone event, education outreach in our community is extremely important to Redstone Arsenal. This past year, the installation hosted fifty area teachers in August. During this time, the teachers learned about the Redstone community, toured facilities and were provided information on tours and off-site demonstrations available to their students. This has sparked an increase in educational field trips at Redstone Arsenal and off-site demonstration visits to various schools, igniting young minds to explore various fields. At the time of this article, the installation has hosted 26 speaking engagements and tours as well as hosted the JROTC Day for local high school cadets. Additionally, Team Redstone organizations are active participants within area schools and volunteer for two major events throughout the year, Veteran’s Day and Read Across America. During these events, 32 schools welcomed members of our community and allowed us the opportunity to connect with their students, our future leaders.

Learning is Year-Round As we celebrate school coming to an end, Family and MWR encourages parents to continue to keep children involved in learning throughout the summer. There are many opportunities on the installation to keep skills intact while having fun. Enroll in the Summer Reading Program at the Family & MWR Library and win prizes, take part in field trips and activities during Child, Youth and School Service’s Summer Camp, join a team sport with Youth Sports or learn a new skill at Arts & Crafts. There are plenty of opportunities to stay active, get connected and learn while having fun all year long at Redstone Arsenal.

Here are two reasons to join in the fun at the Challenger Bingo program.

$10,000 jackpots and three other games at $13,678, $6,275 and $597.

First, some lucky people are winning thousands of dollars in the daily games of chance at the facility. And second, renovations are planned to make the building on Weeden Mountain Road even better.

“What we’re doing in terms of facility upgrades, our goal is to make it the most modern facility across the Army and the best within the Southeast to include civilian facilities,” Wiley said. The renovations by December will include replacing the carpet, going wireless on the Bingo 24 machines and changing the furniture. Wall art will adorn the walls. “I’m just trying to make it feel like a bingo facility,” Wiley said.

Dan Wiley, business manager for the program, doesn’t hide his enthusiasm. He arrives at work about 1 p.m. and doesn’t leave until 11. “I love this bingo program,” the retired colonel said. “I’ve been on board about a year and we’re just doing great things.” This year the facility will payout at least $2.21 million in cash prizes which tops last year’s payout by about $62,000, according to WIley. The payout for the bingo card games is at least $5,250 daily. And the payout for the electronic Bingo 24 games is at least $6,425 daily. Within the last three months, a card-playing customer has won $15,857 in one session. And a Bingo 24 customer won $6,000 on a dollar bet.

$5,250 daily

Challenger bingo includes a traditional card program, door prizes, quick shots basically you buy a card, open it up and play - and the Bingo 24 machines. There is free coffee, water, movie-style popcorn; and custoemrs are allowed to bring in food. Every now and then there are extra perks like a catered buffet. “We try to give back to the customers,” Wiley said. There are various promotional events. And there are nightly specials, such as buy two packs and get one free. Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation members get 10 percent off at the cash register each night.

“The customers make it fun. They’re firendly. They can obviously win money,” Wiley said of the bingo perks. “It’’s convenient to play because it’s after work or on the weekends we’re open Saturday and Sunday. The staff is world class in trying to be friendly. “We provide a customer with a great experience. You can basically play everything for about $41. We are part of MWR so any profit that we make goes to support MWR as a whole.” Attendance averages 78 at the facility. An all-time record crowd of 122 attended the New Year’s celebration. Hours at building 1500 on Weeden Mountain Road are 3 10:45 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with card games starting at 6:45. And the Saturday and Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with card games starting at 1:45. “Half our games are pack games and packs are $14 a piece,” Wiley said. He retired from the Army in January 2013 after more than 25 years and became the Challenger bingo manager in March 2014.

50 years changing to serve Army Community Service has fifty years of evolving to fit the needs of the Army with the shifting demographics of Redstone Arsenal. The initials “ACS” should stand for “Always Changing to Serve” .

from retirees with limited computer skills to millennials that get their information from the internet and check their phone before going to bed and after getting up in the morning. With teleconference and videoconference, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, ACS reaches out beyond the gates of Redstone.

Starting out in many locations as a lending closet of donated household goods operated by volunteers, ACS became the first stop for information and a welcome to the new duty assignment. Expending to meet the needs of the populations, the new regulation in 1978 included budget counseling, debt liquidation, relocation assistance, and an information program. That same year, the Family Advocacy Program, Family Member Employment Assistance Program were officially established. In 1988, the Relocation Assistance Program was formally established. The current ACS includes core programs in Consumer Affairs and Financial Assistance, Program, Mobilization and Deployment Program, Exceptional Family Member Program, Victim Advocacy, New Parent Support Program, Sexual Harassment and Rape Response Program, and Information and Referral.

ACS’s newest program Survivor Outreach Services is the official Army program designed to provide long term support to surviving Families of Fallen Soldiers. This is your program and provides service for as long as you desire! Conceived of and developed by Survivors, this program is continually refined based on Survivor feedback and involvement by senior Army leaders.

Celebration July 27 at 10 a.m. John Pershing Welcome Center

On July 25, 1965, General Harold Johnson, Army Chief of Staff dispatched a letter to all major commanders announcing the approval and establishment of Army Community Service. Twenty five years ago, the Family Member Employment Readiness Program at Redstone Arsenal, had a room with a few typewriters for spouses to work on resumes. The program manager would write down employer’s job requirements on 3x5 note cards to post on a cork board with other paper announcements. A food locker with bags of flour, peanut butter, tuna and powdered milk shared space with the lending closet of glasses, plates, pots, pans and other household goods.

In 2013, the official mission statement read, “To facilitate the commander’s ability to provide comprehensive, standardized, coordinated, and responsive services that support Soldiers, Department of Army Civilians, and Families regardless of geographically location. Maximize technology and resources eliminate duplication in service delivery and measure service effectiveness.” As a demonstration of the quality of service provided at Redstone, the Redstone Arsenal ACS was the first in the Army to be accredited in 2000 and has been accredited four times. ACS will continue to change to meet the needs of its clients, now and into the next 50 years.

Clients for most programs are anyone who can access post. The exception is Army Emergency Relief that provides no-interest financial assistance to Active Duty, military retirees, and surviving spouses of Active Duty Redstone Arsenal Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation
