FOR THE SOUL

In the last few years, Vizag has warmed up to the idea of eating different types of food other than just south Indian cuisine,” says Divesh Hemrajani, owner of the restaurant. The young Sindhi sheepishly adds, “Though I am born and brought up in Vizag, my love for Delhi and their food made me come up with this idea of Soul Delhi.” One visit to this two monthold restaurant and you will experience the culinary journey through the different parts of Delhi like never before. The starters will be brought to your table one after the other till you tell them to stop. The aachari paneer tikka and the tandoori bharva aloo stuffed to perfection with vegetables, nuts and cottage cheese are to die for. Located in Daspalla Hills, it is a perfect place to dine. With the beach close by, this place has so much to offer for a hungry tummy. Having heard lofty descriptions of the place and the food by my foodie friends, I thought it to be some swanky place, but it turned out to be a funky place with a ripped innovative red | october 2016 | 32

look which is very new to Vizag. The food, however, was a revelation: they clearly believe in reserving all amboyance for their recipes. Their signature dishes are Dal-e-Soul Delhi which is basically black lentil cooked overnight on tandoor and served with cream and ghee. This humble dal tastes awesome with tandoori roti. So if your tummy is yearning for some good Delhi food, now you know where to go. Meal for two costs anything like Rs.900.

f you are one of those people who avoid garment stores out of fear that you will waste more time looking for items than actually purchasing them, it is time to stop writing them off. In my latest garment trail, I visited The Boutique and I must tell you, it is a dress lovers’ paradise. Though it is a place for designer wear, it also has regular stuff which is given to the customers at affordable prices. And I am sure you will not go broke if you shop from this place. If your wardrobe is well stocked with your basic requirements for your work place and evening outings and you are still itching to add some brand-new sartorial air to your wardrobe, this is the place to shop. And the best thing is that shopping here; you won’t max out your credit card. Not even a month old, this boutique has already become a craze amongst the fashionistas in the city who love their ethnic wears and all things that speak heritage and class. Started by Soumya and Shilpa on VIP road, ‘The Boutique’ is completely born out of passion for fashion. The store By Lachmi Deb Roy | Shoot by Dhana Vijay

has exhibited the collections of Jesal Vora from Mumbai, Samtha and Shriti and also Sunayna Sood from Hyderabad. They have a team of four tailors who custom make the dresses for their clients. The best thing about this place is that it emphases more on the craft than on the fashion- be it weaving, printing or embroidery. What I spotted was there is a lot of layering of outfits and mix and match of fabrics and prints. The prices range from Rs.2,000 to Rs. 25,000. Since the festivals and wedding season is here, this is truly the best place to shop.

But later he took a plunge into the food industry. It clearly has the best coffee available in the neighbourhood and we all know that Barista is an international brand. The place is perennially packed and the café has a high energy, yet relaxed vibe with accompanying tunes and excellent coffee. They are known for their avoured coffee and Irish

Cappuccino. Located on the Beach Road, it is a coffee lovers’ paradise. During 10.00 pm to 12.00 am the place is visited by office goers from nearby office spaces and in the evening and morning hours it is visited by the students. Here you must try the blueberry muffins, the smoked chicken sandwich, coffee infused almond cake and the mango excess cake. The place also has an open area overlooking the sea and if you spot some sad and grumpy faces, they are basically the people who tried and failed to find an open seat. The place has a smoking zone. Though the cost of food and beverages is a little steep compared to the city’s standard, it is the quality of the coffee and the food that keeps everyone coming back. The best part about this spot is the laid-back setting and its ever-smiling staff. It is the right place to be if coffee is your thing. Just eat and drink everything from here and I am sure you are going to love it and you will be coming back to this place again and gain. So savor the avourful roast chicken sandwich and relax to the sound of the waves.

id you ever taste the tea in the avours of mango, lychee and tapioca with the soft bubbles bursting in your mouth? Well it was a complete new experience for me. At Tea Trail it is more of a special treat where you pay for the ambience as much as for the tea and food and not to forget the luxury to lounge around for hours with no bother- an experience that is worth the price. It is a small place, but very aesthetically done up in pastel shades of mainly blue and green. Started by Priya Gummaluri, an MBA, who quit her job to follow her passion in the food and beverage industry, the place offers 80 varieties of tea. “There were too many coffee shops in the city, so I wanted to start something new and I thought of opening Tea Trail in Vizag,” says Priya. place is known for its tea infused dishes, but don’t be scared for they too have quite a few dishes which are sans tea. The signature tea infused dishes are ‘Tea Marbled Eggs’ which is made of black tea mixed with coddled eggs for a distinct avour and glaze. Another very famous tea infused dish here is the ‘Burmese Tea Salad’ made of fermented leaves of green tea with lettuce and crumbled nuts in garlic hinted sesame dressing. Comparing tea with wine Priya says, “Tea too, like wine, can be paired with certain dishes.” Drinking adrak (ginger) tea from an earthen kullar reminded me of my childhood days when we used to travel by train to visit our grandparents. Chai from a clay cup is an experience of a life time and it is the true taste of India. Nothing can match up to that raw and sweet taste of earth, mixed with gingery-milky tea. GOING

What is it that people look out for in your gym? People come to us setting varied goals and we cater to all of them. Ultimately, we are talking of and targeting the overall health of our members. Why does one need to go to gym? The modern lifestyle leads to a number of health issues, especially in youth. Stress and sedentary lifestyle are fairly common in corporate executives. We often neglect our health and fitness that directly or indirectly affects our energy, stamina and health. Hence we stress on regular exercise which reduces the risk of heart diseases, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. Basically, it helps us carry out our day-to-day activities without getting tired and that is what being fit and healthy all about.

THE BODY SCULPTOR D.Gireesh, a graduate from Vizianagaram is an expert personal trainer. He was handpicked and trained by the Talwalkars. Where did you get your training from? What is it famous for? Techniques are based on goals set by the members. They include muscle strengthening and cardio fitness techniques.

What are the tips you give to people who come to you for weight loss? Eat right and exercise regularly. I feel 60% depends on the diet and 40% on the workouts, when it comes to weight maintenance. Do you borrow some steps from the other streams like yoga, aerobics, zumba? Sticking to one genre becomes monotonous and so we incorporate techniques and exercises from the other streams to keep the workout interesting and motivate our members. We borrow a few aerobics steps and tabata. How custom made are your workouts? That is our speciality. We have different range of exercises and techniques for different ages, lifestyles and specific health issues. We have expert physios to treat specific problems too.

How it happened? I am a fitness buff and my five year-stint with VLCC as a cosmetologist made me think of starting something of my own which offers complete fitness package. cardio session because it completely destresses you. What is the client profile? These days, people are very fitness conscious. So we have clients from the age of 23 to 70. We have housewives, students and office-goers. It is a complete family gym. What is the USP? The classes here will get you moving. It offers everything from figure correction by small vibrations to exercises and diet counselling. We also offer high intensity tabata training. And the best thing about this place is that since it is a family gym a father can come with his son or a mother can come with her daughter to do the workouts together. How many trainers are available? We have three trainers and we give personal attention to each and every client. Sometimes there are people who come for just gymming without asking for a personal trainer. Yet, to avoid injuries, we make it a point to introduce the equipment to the client, explaining to them how each and every one of them functions and its benefits. We see to it that everybody is comfortable in the gym and nobody gets injured while doing the workouts and there are no side-effects.

It is nearly six years and I am with Evolution right from its inception.

What are the special techniques you adopt while training clients?

Do you borrow some steps from other streams of exercise? Our workouts are a blend of yoga, aerobics and floor exercises.

I emphasize mainly on floor exercises. You can say that it is my forte. Stretching is the best way to get a toned and shapely body. Crunches and planks are excellent for tummy reduction. Exercises that utilize your own body weight can be challenging and beneficial. One of the best things about them is that you incorporate both strength and mobility together.

H

is business card reads Manoj Mimani, a Certified Nutritionist. But he is more known as the founder or B-Fit gym that is strategically, rather ironically, located next to Sweet India. If his passion for fitness is vividly displayed in the showcase of his office which carries an impressive array of trophies, his penchant for training exhibited through a huge picture of the models he had trained. Tell us how and why you came into this profession I have always been a health freak and nursed a dream to set up a good gym that would help people lead a healthy and happy life. I obtained my B.Com degree from a Kolkata college and studied nutrition course from Indira Gandhi National Open University. I am a member of the Andhra Pradesh Bodybuilders Association and serving as the Vice-president of Vizag Bodybuilders Association. Basically I am a businessman and set off dealing with electrical appliances. However, my passion for fitness made me establish B-Fit Nutrition Shop that sells healthy food items. It was at the behest of my customers, I set up this facility to complement the shop. I planned the gym and the package in such a manner that offers solutions to health issues. What are the equipment available? The equipment here are most ideal for workouts. For example, look at this red | october 2016 | 48

unique butterfly machine. This is specially designed to strengthen the spine. You will not find this kind of workout machine anywhere else. What is your gym philosophy? Our concept too is totally out of the box. The general concept of gymming is quick weight reduction, which the client might regain once he stops the gym visits. But our package provides lasting solutions. We advocate minimal use of machines and own body workouts. ‘Sweat it out’ is our advice. What are the services offered? Weight gain and loss, spine and joint related workouts. They are designed as per the requirement and stamina of the individual member. What is the clientele? Generally big-bigs of the city. What is the USP? We are very selective of members we take. I scrutinise people thoroughly before allowing them into my premises. Only those who are serious about their

How many trainers are available? I have two more, besides me. I am choosy about the trainers too. What are the significant achievements? A girl who came to us weighing 99 kg returned carrying 84kg within six months and that too with her body properly toned. I also trained 32 models and contestants of Miss.Vizag pageant. A girl came to us with slip-disc problem and could not go through 10- minute work-out. Now she has become the ‘Tyson of our gym’ and can go on non-stop for two hours. This all happened within six months. Are there any expansion plans? No plans to expand. Gyms are sprouting at every nook and corner but I don’t see many serious takers . Message for people Give at least 30 minutes to your body every day and be fit. What is your tip to health-buffs? You can start workout at any age. Anyone above 14 years is eligible. Moreover, I never tell them to stop eating. Go for a hearty meal and burn your calories with equal enthusiasm and regularity.

THE BODY SCULPTOR Pappu Trishant, Trainer, says that earlier his time was divided between eating and sleeping and it was ‘Manoj uncle’ who got him interested in workouts. He seemed to have got to the gym like a fish takes to water and now flaunts his six packs as his reward. Where did you get your training from? What is it famous for? I am a B.Pharm degree-holder and took training from B-Fit. Now I chose this as my full time profession. How many years of experience do you have in this field? I have been working for an year now. Who are the celebrities you trained? I have not trained any celebrities, but right now I am training 6 to 8 people. My focus is on abs and oblique muscles. What are the special techniques you adopt to train your clients? One has to work ones way out. Many people go for mechanical solutions. But I believe that you have to push your body to reap the benefits.

Tell us one incident which made you feel fulfilled and established as a trainer. An obese boy, who came to me rather reluctantly, lost 1.5 kg within a week. That did it. Now he is thoroughly motivated and all set to shed those extra pounds. This made me understand that people, who don’t exercise, are not really lazy, but don’t know what regimen to follow. That little bit of motivation and push put them on the right track.

What is your philosophy? Most people realise the importance of good physique and health at the age of 40. By that time it is a bit too late and damage is already done. To enjoy good health at that age, they have to start working for it right from the age of 20. Earlier, the stress used to be on investing in land and other assets, now the trend is to invest in health. We have to prioritise and burn our fat on regular basis and not accumulate first and then look for ways to shed it.

Do you borrow some steps from the other streams of health regimen? No. It is pure gymming here. Yoga is good for people suffering from respiratory problems. Workouts like Zumba and aerobics may damage the bones in the long run. Hence not advisable. What about customised exercises? First I check where exactly the client has accumulated flab and then suggest a workout targeting those bulges.

for students charging only Rs.1,000 per month. How many trainers are available? I am the prime trainer here. I have not officially employed any trainers. But I do have a few good friends, who are experts in this field and they help me out on a regular basis. Even if there is a batch of 50 people, I can handle them and give them personal attention. Hence there is no need to fret over trainer-trainee ratio. We have a lady trainer who attends exclusively to women.

Rajesh founded Indian Gym and has been running it with great success, with students making a beeline to it seeking solutions to their varied issues. A fitness freak all through, Rajesh took part in many contests and came out with flying colours. The proud owner talks of his creation and clientele. When, how and why? Like any other graduate, I too took up a job in the corporate field. But fitness has always been an integral part of my daily routine and continued to be steadfast in my workouts. Then came a time when it realised that I am cut out for this profession. This compelling passion made me set up the gym. I could raise Rs.19 lakh required for the initial investment with the help of my friends and family, without going for any loan from bank or support from any financial institutions. What is the equipment available? We have everything one looks for in a gym. We procured the equipment from Bangalore and Hyderabad. What are the services offered? Weight loss and bodybuilding are the basic services we offer. red | october 2016 | 50

P. Rajesh What is the client profile? A lot of students come to us for workouts, probably because of our reasonable charges. Though we have a lot of housewives and office goers coming to us, it is basically a youthdominated crowd. What is its USP? It is client-friendly gym. We build an easy rapport with all those who come to us. This is the most attractive part of our training. We impose no restriction on time. The members can come any time during our working hours and can stay as long as they want. Ours is the only gym in the city that allows this kind of flexibility. We keep our fee pocket-friendly since it is the hot spot

What are the significant achievements? We have a number of satisfied customers who return home smiling after drastically losing inches and pounds. I can, off the cuff, tell you that one student lost whopping17 kg in a month and another student lost 12 kg. There is a girl who lost 7 kg in a month. Are there any expansion plans? We are scouting for right places to open two more gyms. We wish to open one centre at Jagadamba and another at Sithammadhara.

“Taking note of my ardour for the fitness, Rajesh chose me as his friend and eventually handed me the responsibility of training his esteemed clients,” says Trainer P. Krishna Chaitanya.

Who are the celebrities you trained? I have not trained any ‘celebrity’ in the sense of the word widely used. Everyone who comes to us is treated like one.

Where did you get your training from? What is it famous for? I got trained here and as Rajesh said we are good at solving weight issues- whether it is losing or gaining.

What are the special techniques you adopt while training clients? I insist that stretching the body to the ultimate yields maximum benefits.

How many years of experience do you have in this field? Two years

What are the tips you give to people for weight loss? The stress is on the diet. The daily workout has to be supported by proper food intake.

THE BODY SCULPTOR

Please give us one incident which made you feel fulfilled. There are a lot of members who lost inches working in our gym. All those results are very gratifying.

from the other genres. We stick to the exercises we learnt in this traditional gym. Are your workouts custom-made? We only impart what we learnt from our coaches and we keep on updating our knowledge. We do improvise a movement here or a stretch there, depending on the health of the member. Most of the time, we find men gaining weight on abs because of the sedentary life they lead. In case of women, there are a number of other reasons that make them add pounds. We craft the workout regimen taking the help from experts in the field.

Do you borrow workouts from other streams ? We don’t borrow from anything P. Krishna Chaitanya

Too much information about good diet can be confusing. We all know that eating right can help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid health problems, but did you know that diet can affect your mood and sense of wellbeing? one are the days when the entire family would gather to share a meal. Anjali Dange, Nutrition Consultant, says that the family may not sit together for a meal, but there certainly is a meal plan that meets the needs of all of them, whether they are 10 or 80.

The Planner Anjali, founder of Starlite Nutrition & Wellness Centre, has shifted to the city recently after working in premium hospitals, clinics and fitness centres both at home and abroad. She brings vast experience of managing lifestyles of clients from all walks of life, celebrities and political leaders included. Holder of M.Sc degree in Nutrition, with affiliations to Overseas American Dietetic Association & Harvard Medical Institute, she has a scientific approach to her nutrition care process. She engines keen interest in age management and integrative nutrition focusing on women’s wellness issues, family health management & community awareness. Dos • Share at least one meal a day • Mindful eating is necessary. Cultivate the habit of savouring food. • Let the children grow vegetable garden to teach them value what they eat. • Include traditional and native food items and talk about their significance. Don’ts • Switch off smart phones, TVs other gadgets while eating. • Don’t allow children to get carried away by or succumb to junk food advertisements. • Avoid cooking portions more than necessary to avoid reheating of stale food. • Don’t go grocery-shopping on empty stomach. A hungry stomach leads you to pick wrong foods.

and social history. Most of them are enthusiastic when they begin a nutrition programme, but don’t keep up the momentum. One reason for that is lack of awareness and support from the family. That is why I insist on a meeting with the clients family either individually or as a group. The challenge in planning a meal for the family is ensuring the needs of each member is met, whether it is a child or a grandmother. I suggest every meal must have easy to make nutrition packed items. Eg: Instead of having plain dosas for breakfast, grate some carrot or cucumber in the batter to boost the vitamin & fibre intake. I suggest beetroot phulkas or spinach and oats khichidi with raita. I also give recipes to make life easier for the client. When it comes to protein food, I suggest fish, quinoa, paneer, millets or whole lentile & sprouts. For snacks children can be given ragi laddoos or sandwiches; for the men or the working lady easy to carry fruits or nuts or high fibre biscuits; for the aged easy to digest roasted puffed rice or makhana. Beyond Diet Blood tests that determine the present genetic and physiological condition of the client are must. I make no drastic changes if the family has included at least a few healthy items in the menu. red | october 2016 | 55

For Professionals

Diet Mantra A healthy diet for this age group should be a proper balance of right nutrients. Alternatives should be both healthy and enjoyable. The emphasis is on appropriate portions rather than avoiding certain food. Stress is the cause of all diseases. Take out some time for brisk walking or cycling or yoga. People who lead sedentary life require fewer calories.

Increasing fibre portion prevents constipation and reduces the risk of heart diseases and diabetes. Plenty of fruits and vegetable should be a part of the diet. Proteins should not be avoided. This age group is prone to calcium deficiency. It is better to pair Calcium with Vitamin -D as it helps to expedite absorption.

Physical Activity Between socialising and work, there are a growing General Gyan It is advisable to eat a variety number of factors which get into the way of regular of food. Eating breakfast physical activity and positive helps people control their weight and keeps them fully nutritional choices. It is not charged for the day. Try and necessary that you join a gymnasium. Brisk walking is eat fibre-rich food. But enough. It is not good to go energy-giving starch is also important. The trick is to look for any drastic changes for healthy options of carbs either in physical activity or like - whole grain wheat, diet. Take baby steps. broken wheat and oats. Remedial Measures Taking high protein, high fibre and low fat is the right way to stay fit. Adequate amount of fluid intake is equally important. Women must consume at least 2.5 litres of fluids while men should take 3.5 litres. At this age the metabolic rate is low so one should be careful. Have your dinner by 7.30 pm and eat 5 to 6 small meals.

A TRAY FOR

TEENS & TWEENS

M

amta Narang, an IT professional from Delhi, moved to Vizag for sheer love for the city. After suffering from back ache and frozen shoulder by working for 48 hours at a stretch, she went for a career switch and entered the field of health and nutrition. A staunch believer in spiritual healing through food, she tells how to feed the body and nourish the spirit. Mamta Narang

Diet Mantra Food, instead of being a source of nourishment, has become an area of endless confusion. Eating disorder among pre-teens and teens has become a big concern with most of them being obsessed with looks. They don’t realise that being thin is not healthy. There should be a spiritual connection to food, if they wish to be energetic from within. Teenagers are having a lot of heavy, chemical-laden junk food and that needs to be avoided. General Gyan Teens can be very difficult and uncooperative when it comes to eating the right food. You can not totally blame them as they have become ‘scheduled slaves’. They come back from school, go for their

activity classes and then finish their homework till late in the night. With this kind of tight schedules, they are bound to feel hungry. Junk food like chips and colas, available at the corner store, which give instant energy, have become a tempting option for them. We need to heal them from within by giving healthy alternatives to each food. We should not say ‘no’ to anything. The more we do that, the more they rebel. We should advise them not to go for unrealistic dreams to attain size zero. They should be made to understand that diet affects performance. Intake of wrong food leads to hyper tension, obesity, high sugar levels and hormonal imbalance in kids and this can be avoided only by diet and proper counselling. They

should avoid packaged noodles that are high in sodium and also aerated drinks which are high in soda and sugar. This can cause early obesity. Studies show that proper diet takes care of emotional, physiological and psychological well-being. Physical Activity Physical activity is very important for teenagers. It not only helps develop muscles and fend off obesity, but also helps them perform better and learn new skills. It is good to make the child huff and puff a little bit. It reduces stress and improves sleep.

Breakfast: Dosa or idli with chutney, veggies and a glass of milk. Mid-morning snack Apple/ butter milk/coconut water Lunch: For vegetarians Parathas and curd/Bisibelebath/tamarind or lemon rice. For non-vegetarian Chicken or fish curry with rice or chappatis and salad. Evening snack Puffed rice with roasted chana. Dinner Vegetable soup and fruits.

Dos • You can have green chillies and black pepper • Stick to your staple food • Add seasonal fruits and vegetables to the diet Don’ts • Stay away from red chillies, chips, kurkures, exotic fruits and aerated drinks • Less of refined flour • No fancy diet plans red | october 2016 | 57

The aged too can live an independent and fruitful life. Exercise certainly keeps their body and mind agile, but that needs to be supported with a suitable diet. With a little change in food, one can lead a healthier life,” explains Kancharla Neeraja, Chief Dietitian, Care Hospitals.

another reason for their restricting the intake of food and fluids is their reluctance to depend on others when it comes to using toilets.

Services Mainly ours is the cardiac care centre though it offers special services in other streams too. Hence we deal with a lot of senior citizens and the onus of planning and prescribing the appropriate diet for them lies on my shoulders. Three more dietitians assist me in the task. The Factors This is the period when people are not physically strong. They become physically infirm and mentally weak with their refluxes taking a beating. Realising that they are no more productive, they also tend to become non-demanding. They need to be handled with kid gloves and given easy bites. The plight of those living in oldage homes is worse as they lack individual attention and are served a common diet. Challenges Senior citizens are generally the victims of either under or over nutrition. More often than red | october 2016 | 58

not, they end up eating more than what they can literally chew. Primary reason for this is the long vacant hours they spend. Sometimes they are underfed because of their economic conditions or at times they give up on eating on their own volition. Generally, I find them deficient in protein and calcium. They need fibre to keep their digestive system in good condition. Nutrition status is poor in old and they tend to gain weight due to the restricted movements. Yet

Remedial Measures Ideally, you have to work towards your old age right from the time you are young. Even after retirement, it is advisable for them to lead a disciplined life which includes proper physical exercise. Reduce your fatty and sugary food intake. However, a low-fat, high-fibre diet is also not appropriate for the elderly people, especially for those with a poor digestion. It is wise to choose food which is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and calcium. Again one needs to be careful about the portion size. They should eat small meals at regular intervals.

DHARMENDER'S

REALTY

DREAM

ovus Infra Pvt. Ltd. is the name and its à la mode

office looks like a 3-D image of a leaf out of a

premium interior decor magazine. That is where

we met Mr.Dharmender Varada, Managing Director, in his own ambience. Coming to the City of Destiny with the clear objective to usher in the concept of new urbanisation, the builder has established the company giving it a Latin name which means ‘New or Unprecedented’. “I wanted to take something from ancient languages and was quite taken in by this word,” he says with a smile. The maxim- ‘Whatever good things we build end up building us’ - seems to have come true in the case of this sophisticated, yet simple and highly articulate entrepreneur. It may look a little strange to see this national level rank-holder in CA pitching his tent in a totally unrelated field like real estate. But hear him out and you know that here is a man of all seasons.

Shoot by Dhana Vijay

I started with a small layout project- Novus Dutch County in Bheemili and followed it up with Novus Florence Village, a gated residential complex spreading over nine acres of land in Gajuwaka.

Excerpts Please trace your journey. After completing CA in 1992, I joined Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC), one of the top-five global audit firms and moved to the US. After an enriching stint with it, I switched to IT sector and later, oated my own consultancy and an offshore ITES services company. I moved back home to promote a chain of retail family stores and eventually red | october 2016 | 60

in 2007 I set foot in real estate. Right now I am into four different verticals- ITES company, quick service restaurants in Philadelphia suburbs in the US. In India besides real estate, I am into retail 'Indian Terrain, Pepe and Celio Exclusive Brand Outlets. Why did you do it? While I was in retail business, I started buying properties and realised that these investments were yielding much better returns. In 2009

What is the difference you find in these two ends of the world? Yes, the difference in the work culture is very stark and palpable. In the US, everything is pretty organised and streamlined. If you hire and delegate work to someone, you can be rest assured that it will get done. All you need to do is training and handholding for a week or even less. You just have to manage the resources. Only a 10% correction or supervision is required. In India, the system is not set up properly. Even the government, instead of being facilitating in nature, ends up (maybe inadvertently) putting spokes in the wheel. It is tough to manage the manpower as it is neither trained nor committed. I can cite a simple example. In the US within three years, I could raise my consultancy firm into a 200-employee enterprise. Starting with a quarter million dollar investment, I could develop it into a $ 22 m.- company in the same period. One can implement plans with ease there, whereas the best of strategies fall at when it comes to execution here.

What do you attribute this to? My observation is that basically people don’t fear losing jobs in India. In the US their income is directly linked to their livelihood and survival. But in India they have a secure life and somehow survive either through sponging on their family and friends or duping them. Seldom you find an American borrowing money from others to make a living. Secondly, in the US, people’s identity is tightly monitored/controlled by the state. As it has direct access to the data, the defaulter can be traced with ease, a consequence feared by people. Even minor evasions get reported with the social security system in place across the states. Of course, we too realised the need of such a vigilance system in India and are going for the unique ID cards like Aadhar. But it takes several years to get it implemented and interconnected. Still you want to be in India? Yes, my love for my family and country overrides all other concerns. I don’t mind foregoing the comforts of easy life and earning fast buck for the sake of this sentiment. To be frank, most of the NRIs feel that despite their protracted stay there, they are not ‘fully there’. Moreover, I didn’t want my sons get disconnected from the our family value system. What are the changes you find in the real estate field? I did put my best foot forward during a bad period in 200809 when the real estate was going through a recession. My entry surprised many, while I looked at it as an opportunity to incubate, gear up and settle by the time the market had really picked up momentum. Lots of people cautioned me against this move. But I made the most of the year 2009 and established myself well. What about post-bifurcation scene? Post-bifurcation, things started looking up for Vizag. The city has seen good

growth in the land prices as well as constructed property values. It has been reecting both immediate and long term benefits with industrial boom. Major industries like tourism, fishing and IT are getting a boost. Why have you chosen Vizag? I came here for my retail business and simply fell in love with the ethereal and exotic combination of the sea and hills and made it my karma bhoomi. Vizag Vs Vijayawada There is less political interference here compared to the new capital region. Being in the top ten fast-growing economies of India and with its 26 billion US dollar GDP, Vizag is the most happening place. There are not many gated communities here. Opening the seams of the municipality limits, gave us an opportunity to go to the outskirts. Developing projects outside, where we can start from the scratch, is better than developing things that already exist.

Tax- incentives announced for seven districts, out of which Vizag is one, will bring a lot of investment in the industrial and manufacturing sector. That, in turn, will increase the demand in our sector. Lack of Industry Vijayawada did see a sudden spurt. That has stopped now because there is neither a major migration nor is there any reality MAT. It is more a speculative, not the deep-based or demand-based investment there. No major industries or

trade with employment potential have setup shop there. Mere shifting of 26,000 administrative staff is not a motivation enough for the industry to come. Tell us about your own track record Our Gajuwaka project phase1comprising 188 apartments is well applauded. The Phase -II, with 350 units, is taking shape. We have three more projects going on in the city. We completed one gated community project and a mini-convention centre in Vijayawada. We are planning one more residential venture at Hyderabad. What ventures are easy to handle commercial Vs. residential? Commercial complexes are easy to handle. Your job ends with giving a nice elevation and good ooring. You need not get involved in finishing touches nor do you need to deal with many clients. The residential ventures are really complex propositions because you have to satisfy heterogeneous clientele. If one has an issue with Vaastu here, the other has a problem with the ventilation there. Do you believe in Vaastu? I am a strong believer in Vaastu Sastra. In fact, even in the US, I hunted for one and half years for a house that complied with Vaastu and bought it only after I was fully convinced. I believe in it for both scientific and religious reasons, because our religious beliefs are based on wellpropounded scientific theories. It is always safe to be within the framework of these age old traditions. I shall not take risk on that front. What are the hurdles you faced in your field? Innumerable! Getting the government clearances for the project in itself is an uphill task as it involves relentless leg work and unending trips to the offices. Finding committed labourers and contractors is yet another daunting task.

red | october 2016 | 61

The industry is growing at a fast pace but the growth of resources doesn’t match it. There are no measures taken to develop skills. We have to make that extra effort to give them hands on training. At the end of the day, you are not sure they would stay loyal to you. Are you brining in any western technologies like prefabs? For house ventures the pre-fabricated material are the best, provided we can get the affordable technology here. If one considers the environmental aspects too, it is better we go for the western type of construction. But unfortunately, we don’t have the manufacturers who supply that kind of material. We have a particular mindset and prefer to go for solid buildings that can be handed down to the ensuing generations than the houses with wooden walls and oorings. Lastly, for us the house is a secure place, reinforced with thick walls and impenetrable interiors. What is your advice to the new comers to the field? If you want to enter business, don’t wait for good time to arrive because when it really starts, you may be left behind in the race. This happens because the established players grab all the plum opportunities, leaving the less profitable ones for you. Tell us about your CSR acitvities I set up Lakshmi Nrisimha Charitable Society and set aside some land in its name. I am mulling on a few projects. A little about your family My father Varada Narayana Rao, resident of Vijayawada, was into rice business and later moved to electricals. My mother Sita Rama Mahalakshmi, was a very efficient homemaker, brought us up with great care and devotion. I am the 5th child among six brothers and two sisters. I studied B.Com in Andhra Loyola College before I went for CA, in which I secured 31st rank at the national level. All my brothers are in various kinds of businesses while my youngest brother,

Krishna Dhanush is studying 2nd year Engineering at VIT, Vellore and Kavi is in the 7th standard. A Few Asides Business through fair means- possible? Yes, undoubtedly, it is possible. One may have its challenges in the short run, but in the long run that is what gives you better name and mileage. That is what I believe in and that is what I practise.

Can tradesmen achieve it in today’s world of competition ? If one resolves to work hard, face the challenges, cross hurdles and be upright and fair, one can be successful. f you want to know how a house wakes up to lights, you must visit this one. Blessed with natural light and air in abundance, this home exudes a positive feel and welcomes anyone with open arms. Tranquillity rules here. It is not just another concrete construction with the trendiest furniture or latest shades on the walls, but it is the dream home crafted with precision, finesse and articulate aesthetics by architect and interior designer Sidharth Gupta. Minimalistic approach without cluttering it with furniture or artefacts, was another rule we were particular about. To get the best, we procured part of the furniture from China and a few others from Turkey. Sidharth translated our imaginations flawlessly into reality.

The Proud Owners: Arun Agarwal & Family Our idea of a dream home was a space where natural light pours into every corner and it has an eternal freshness. It should have a soul of its own and stand unaffected as a timeless beauty in years to come. At the same time, we wanted it to be contemporary, chic and trendy. For a Rich Rendezvous Agarwals have kept their conversation zone as a chic one. A set of two heavy leather William Chester sofas in coffee colour, are chosen for the sitting arrangement. A bulky leather trunk, in mocha tinge, is used as the centre table. The front wall is accentuated with a wooden panel behind the television. Indirect and direct lighting in the ceiling in white tinge, muffles the ambiance.

For a Ritzy Welcome An ‘L’ shape sitting setup is created with off-white swanky sofa. A shredded area rug in tortilla colour blends in perfectly with the rest of the elements. Two contrasting walls, one plain white and the other, the prettier one with wooden panelling in natural tinge, amplify the look of this zone. A quirky centre table sits in the middle.

For a Luxurious Slumber Minimalism is the word which is followed to the perfection here. A king-size low lying bed in a white-chocolate combo is placed as the centerpiece. The threelegged triangular bedside night table, holding a vintage table clock, perfectly complements the cot. The full-size wardrobe, donning the design of white and hazel stripes, remains as the highlight of this slumber space.

In the first impression, one would notice two black-brown combination stylish chairs teaming up casually with the coffee sofas. But just pull the curtain behind them; one will be introduced to the world in itself. A huge full-size glass window spreading from the roof to the floor is the show-stealer here. Giving a breathtaking view of the surroundings, it calls one to indulge in a soul-soothing session, lazing in one of those 2 chairs with a cup of coffee in one hand and a book in the other. n artist and a fan of Mithun Chakraborty's flashy clothing, Prashant Agarwal feels that it is the fondness for the star’s dressing that led him to become a designer. After earning a PG Diploma in NIFT, in Textiles, he trained in a couple of export houses in Mumbai. After he learnt his lessons in production and sampling, he moved to Hyderabad to start on his own. His aim is to make the world a more stylish place. The designer proudly tells us about his work.

About the store It is a design studio for bespoke men’s customization, that I opened in 2013. We offer the best and latest designer wear, elegant formals and fashion outfits for men and corporate silhouettes for women. The studio is spread over 1,200 sq.ft., right in the centre of the happening fashion street of Hyderabad. Though it is surrounded by many designer stores, this particular spot stands out for its custom-made outfits. The decor of the store is modern, urban and subtle. Our studio is different from others in one way as we have three electronic screens/catalogues with our own creations and the latest of the fashion forecasts for every coming season. These are updated regularly making it easy for the client to decide and view the designs.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? Believe it or not, my inspiration mostly comes from my dreams. Not just a design but the entire concept of the design comes to my mind. For example, I turn over a regular formal blazer into a half sleeved blazer with a little twist in the design. I created this some six years ago for summers as the weather didn’t support the conventional blazers and suits. That product was shot with Rana Daggupati and was an instant hit!

I draw my designing inspiration from the tribes of New Zealand.

there is a concept that we have just launched. This entire look is very unique and a real revolution, called ‘Body Mass Sizing Technology.’ Through this, we don’t require any measurements and give the client a 100% fit guarantee or money back. So anyone can order a customized outfit from wherever they are. I am working on this project to produce the best designs for my clients which facilitates ordering tem from the cell.

What do you have to offer? We offer formal and designer men’s wear for office goers and special occasions or for club-visits, especially for those who are not satisfied with the available fits in the readymade market. I believe an outfit like a suit blazer or a sherwani has tremendous impacts if it is fitted well.

THE PERFECT FIT

Prashant’s designs range from quirky to subtle. No wonder he is one of the most sought after designers of the city. Every piece crafted by him stands out and is different from the others. And till date, all his experiments have been sure shot hits with his clients. They certainly leave fashoionistas asking for more.

he preconceived notion that eating out is all about consuming unwanted and unhealthy calories, is changing with the time. Now it is not just about staying away from refined flour and reused oil, that are ruining our health. There is more to it than we know. The city seems to be getting fitter with more and more people picking the healthier options even at fast food centres. So the consumption of organic food is increasing, giving people enough reason to start providing them with it. Organic foods are those produced through methods that comply with the standards of organic farming. The produce is usually considered to be post three years of chemical pesticide-free. This is to ensure the soil is free from previous pesticide contamination. In general, organic foods are also usually not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or synthetic food additives – being

CafÊ, a brainchild of Megha Dinesh, is a perfect getaway for those who want to spend their time in a healthy way. From healthy food to a rejuvenating spa, in a soulful ambience – this place has it all. The wellness expert speaks about her outlet and how she maintains its standards. How did you come up with the concept of organic food? I am a strong believer in the maxim - what you eat and think is who you are. Healthy and good food has always been my preferred choice. Being in the wellness industry for more that 16 years, further strengthened this belief. So the concept of organic food has been quite a natural choice for me. How do you set the standards? There are several agencies like Vedic Organic Certification Agency, Timbaktu Organic Association that have set norms to validate the produce. How much healthier are organic foods when compared to conventional ones? Unfortunately, if you Google you wouldn't find enough of scientific evidence proving organic food is better than conventional one. Not because it is not true, but simply because the researches are funded by food lobbyists and by people who are huge beneficiaries from conventional farming. The huge funds required for researches yet cannot be supported by organic farmers or associations. Scientific

researchers have proven the sudden increase in diseases has a direct relation to the increased amount of toxins in our body. These toxic substances have heavy metals which are typically used in pesticides and they get into your system through food.

food for family meal. We are a part of generation which has seen the changeover. The mushrooming organic stores in the city stand testimony to the change in good quality eating.

On the other hand, we know organic food is grown naturally without chemical intervention. Hence the organically grown produce is the best and naturally adaptive food. As a result, it is highly rich in minerals and other nutrition making it ideal food for humans. What are the difficulties you face? It is more about logistics and the gap between demand and supply. Since organic farming is not yet wide spread, the supply usually doesn't meet the demand. However, people have become more accepting and flexible. The other challenge is the storage. You can't store organic produce for too long. How aware are people? I know, for sure, many of my friends are ready to go that extra mile to use organic red | october 2016 | 45

Tease Your Taste With Garden Café

Healthy Food

L

ocated in the heart of Jubilee Hills within the Apollo Health City premises, the Garden Cafe serves health food that will tickle your taste buds. The first thing that comes to our mind when we talk about healthy food is the taste. Well, we are happy to note that they do not compromise on the taste. Their menu has an assortment of specially handpicked nutritious recipes for the health-conscious. It has the exact break down of the nutritious count. Be it breakfast or main course or a quick snack, they have it all. What sets them apart from others is their on-site dietitian who guides you in understanding your body and nutritional needs. They suggest a tailor-made diet plan that works for you!

How did you come up with the concept of organic food? Health is a major sector of focus and food is the most important part of it. A healthy body is a combination of good food and balanced lifestyle. When we talk about good food, it means you keep all the nutrients intact, so that it is beneficial to our body. Organic is a farming technique where no chemical is used. Nutrients are not lost during any further processing of the food. As ‘Health Cafe’, we want to give best to our customers in terms of health and taste. Eating organic food helps us get maximum nutrients that can be derived from the food and makes our body more healthy. How do you set the standards? We do not compromise on quality, hence we purchase our food items from certified

vendors across the city. How healthier are organic foods when compared to the conventional ones? The term organic means the food ingredient are grown under the natural ecosystem. Organic food is way much healthier when compared to the regular ones. The food does not undergo any chemical processing, so it de-toxes the body naturally. Eating organic food leads to proper nutrient absorption of the body. What regulations are in place to ensure what we buy is really organic? We have certified copies. Each and every ingredient, we purchase, carries number the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

What are the hurdles you face? I don’t take them as hurdles as my objective is to offer a healthy lifestyle to people. How aware are people now? Since it promises great health and people are reaping health benefits from it, the awareness over organic food is spreading fast among the masses.

How much expensive is the organic produce compared to the regular one? We have to pay for the quality. We believe in good quality food and don’t mind spending on it. How does it benefit one’s health? Eating organic food is like a blessing to your body. From a medical point of view, organic food aids weight reduction, checks blood pressure, nourishes skin and hair,

They are now also supplying food to hospitals and institutions and are all set to relocate to Hitech City from Banjara Hills. Telling us more about the place and its provisions, is owner Santosh Banpur, B.Tech, IIT, Powai He also shares his experiences in the city.

How do you set the standards? We try to get the ingredients from reliable sources. Some certified, but mostly from known sources. Organic means different things for different people. So it is really about the way you interpret. SANTOOSH

Do you use any genetically modified organisms? No, we don’t. How healthier are organic foods when compared to regular ones? Undoubtedly, these are much healthier - especially the green leafy vegetables and fruits.

change in a short span of time. But if you incorporate this food as a part of your life, you are happier and healthier than before. What are the hurdles? The main worry is with sourcing of supplies and fluctuating prices. How aware are people now? Things are getting better as people are more aware now, but there is a long way to go.

What regulations are in place to ensure the quality? There are some routine audits done by the certifying agencies. How did you come up with the concept of organic food? It began with the concept of an organic store and a place for all things sustainable and the food business has been a natural transition since we were already using all the ingredients sold in the restaurant.

How costly is the organic produce when compared to regular ones? It is certainly 30-40% more expensive. But it is worth the price. How does it benefit one’s health? The benefits are shown only in the long run. Don't expect a dramatic

he toast of T-town was in Vizag recently to celebrate the success of his film Majnu. This is his fifth hit in a row. An absolute no nonsense man and a smooth conversationalist, Nani truly has carved a niche for himself in the industry. His chiseled face and sharp looks just add to the package. Dressed in ripped jeans and olive green jacket with the boynext door charm, he sat for a quick interview on a sultry October afternoon.

I DON’T LIKE FOREIGN DESTINATIONS BECAUSE I MISS HOME COOKED FOOD

You have given back-to-back super hits. How has the whirlwind journey been so far? It is absolutely a wonderful feeling. Now, I realize that my responsibilities are greater as the expectation of the audience has gone up. Bigger expectation, obviously, leads better performance. For me, every time I deliver a hit, it is a big ‘threat.’ With every movie,

Why did you choose Vizag as the first city to celebrate your film’s success? Vizag has always been close to my heart. I simply love the place for its beauty and simplicity. My wife hails from here and I have a lot of fond memories attached to this city. I love to see the happy faces of the people and the audience have a beautiful way of

What makes you accept a film? I go through the script thoroughly and generally, I don’t like to be type-casted as a lover boy or as a comedian. I make a conscious effort to choose a role that is a little different from my previous roles.

Tell us a little about Majnu. It is a short film and an ideal story. I like the honesty and innocence of the role I played. It is a seamless blend of comedy and romance.

How did your experience as an AD help you in being an actor? It has helped me hugely, much more than what I could have learnt from an acting school. I have seen many actors coming from reputed film schools who are not confident in front of the camera.

How has the journey of Nani been from an assistant director to an RJ and an actor? The journey has been just the way I wanted. I was passionate about films from the very beginning. As an assistant director, I have worked with directors like legendary Bapu. But being an RJ was a completely different ball game, but that was not where my true interest lied. I did it to make some pocket money. I enjoy being a hero because this way you touch the hearts of many people and everybody knows you.

Do you always make it a point to choose movies that are love stories, family dramas and comedies? Not necessarily, I do like acting in love stories and family dramas. I have done thrillers as well, like the ‘Gentleman’ in which I played a double role.

showering me with unconditional love. Aren’t these reasons enough to come here again and again, what say you?

I want to improve on my work because I know that my audience will be expecting more out of me.

Is the competition tough? It must be tough for those who are competing. I do not feel the pressure because I am not in that kind of aggressive rat race. Success just happens to me because I give my best in whatever I do. I don’t try to compete with anybody, but only with myself.

Do we need a godfather to survive in the film industry? Having a godfather, I frankly think is an outdated concept. The film industry now encourages people who are passionate, talented, committed and sincere. All these qualities are required to survive and shine in this industry.

Were you fascinated with acting from the very beginning? I was just plain simple passionate about acting and films and that is how I am here. My hard work and ardour paid. I come from a humble middle class background with nobody from my family in the industry. Neither did I have a godfather nor a degree from an acting school. I learnt everything on the job with a lot of dedication. To put it in a nutshell, my talent is my godfather.

It takes a while to learn the technical aspects of filming. Working as an assistant director made me understand the technicalities fast. And I did not have to put in much effort. Performing in front of the camera came naturally to me as I was familiar with the whole set-up.

IT HAS BEEN BEAUTIFUL SO FAR, BUT THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

I JUST FOLLOWED MY HEART AND DID WHATEVER I THOUGHT WAS RIGHT.

Any Bollywood plans? No, not at all. I am happy doing what I am doing. I am comfortable with Telugu speaking people as I can relate to them with much ease. I cannot relate to Bollywood films and its audience. Most importantly, I don’t know how to speak in Hindi uently. My diction in Hindi has to be good and I know that I don’t have it in me.

Any specific director that you would love to work with? Mani Ratnam and Kamal Hassan are the two people I simply look up to and I would like to work with these legends.

What do you think are the perks of being an actor? The unconditional love, adulation and blessings of the audience.

You have been into directing, do the directors of your films come to you for advices? I have discussions and interactive sessions with my directors, but not advising them as in ‘advising’ them. I neither offer suggestions nor correct them because I feel it is disturbing. A healthy and open talk is what we have.

How do you choose a film? I go by the script, if the character and the story line appeals to me, I take up the project.

On being the cover boy of red magazine It is an awesome feeling. I am looking forward to it.

What is your fitness mantra? I never take stress and I only like eating home cooked food.

Your favourite dish? Tomato rice cooked by my mother.

What are your hobbies? I watch films during my leisure hours. I have taken up films as a profession because it is my hobby. So, I don’t feel the pressure.

Your favourite holiday spot? The holy hills of Tirumala is my favourite holiday destination. I go there with my family regularly. It is a wonderful feeling to hear the echoing chants. I love the place because I feel rejuvenated and that is the whole idea of a holiday. I don’t like any foreign destinations because I miss home cooked food and mainly South Indian dishes.

What is the best thing that you like about your wife? Her positive nature

What is your idea of happiness? Peace

ON A LIGHTER NOTE

How has becoming an actress changed your life? It requires a lot of will power and most importantly, self-confidence to be an actor. There were quite a few instances which have pushed me to the limits yet I have managed to bounce back. Even accomplished actors face a lot of insecurities and frustrations but probably have a better way of dealing with them.

Tell us about your journey so far? My journey has been extremely satisfying. I have met some of the most interesting personalities and creative geniuses. While there is a long list of directors and actors that I would love to work with, I still have been privileged enough to meet them and understand their working styles.

fter her first stint with acting in a Sri Lankan documentary, while she was in the UK, Sanam Prasad got into movies. It was then that she realized that she enjoyed acting and could explore it further. She landed in the South Indian Film Industry and is here to stay. We caught up with the PYT to know more about her…

How do you prepare yourself to get into your role? I have tried to select characters which are either protagonists or a prominent ones. After listening to the script, I get an idea of the role to be played. If it reminds me of a previously watched film I go back and watch it again for

What are the things you look at, before signing a project? Initially every project offered to me sounded exciting or rather Now I think of all the aspects and be frank about my doubts and concerns. It helps a huge deal in making the choice, when the team is willing to answer all my questions.

Your current films. I am now working in 2 Kannada films. It is high time that I got to work in my native language. This feels special to me. I will be seen in Vara and Atharva.

I think most of that credit goes to Mahesh himself. He is a warm and friendly person and so very approachable. At least I didn’t have any difficulty striking a superb working rapport with him. Guess I was plain lucky!

How nervous were you while acting with Mahesh Babu? I often face this question. Surprisingly, I was not nervous at all.

My role model in both fashion and films is Priyanka Chopra. She is a living example of the phrase, 'Sky is the limit'. I am amazed by her stellar growth as an actress and her journey continues to inspire many actors like me.

Who is your role model in fashion and in film industry?

There are many. But the most important would be to be kind to others. We need to keep this in mind because all of us have our own struggles and a kind word or small gesture makes all the difference. Public hostility has been increasing of late which makes it all the more important for us to spread the message of kindness and love.

What are your values of life?

Rate yourself as an actress? I have realized that I am quite spontaneous. I enjoy enacting conversational scenes just as much as dramatic ones. I am good with tragic scenes for some reason. So I manage to emote sadness convincingly.

ideas. If not I imagine myself in the character's shoes and give it a fresh outlook.

oman’s body harbours many mysteries (some raveled and some unraveled), especially when it comes to child-bearing. I strive to throw light on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) that could be one of the reasons for the women being deprived of the pleasure of becoming a mother.

REASON BEHIND INFERTILITY

What are the long term health risks of PCOS? These women are at increased risk for type 2 diabetes, high

What are the symptoms of PCOS? Irregular or light periods or no periods at all. Some women with PCOS do not ovulate at all. PCOS is one of the most common causes of not being able to get pregnant. Excess hair growth (hirsutism) mainly on the face, lower tummy and chest, thinning of scalp hair in some women. Weight gain and depression.

What causes PCOS? If any one of the relatives are affected (mother, sister etc) the risk of PCOS is increased. In these women the body`s response to the blood glucose regulating hormone insulin is reduced. To prevent the glucose levels becoming higher, the body produces more insulin which can lead to weight gain, irregular periods, infertility and higher levels of testosterone.

How common is PCOS? Around 1 in 10 women has PCOS.

Understanding ovaries and ovulation: Ovulation normally occurs once a month where an egg is released into the fallopian tube. Each month several follicles start to develop but normally just one fully develops and goes on to ovulate. The ovaries make small amounts of male hormones (androgens) such as testosterone. It is the imbalance in these hormones that causes PCOS.

Wellness

Losing even a moderate amount of weight (5% of the body weight) can help. A combination of controlled diet and enhanced exercising is the best. Avoiding sugary foods and drinks, fried and junk food, white bread,

Aim to lose weight if you are overweight. Losing weight helps to reduce the high insulin levels, which has a knock-on effect of reducing the testosterone level. This then improves the chance of ovulating, improves any period problems and fertility and may also help to reduce hair growth and acne.

What is the treatment for PCOS? There is no cure for PCOS. However, symptoms can be treated and health risks can be reduced.

How is PCOS diagnosed? Are there any other tests to be done? Diagnosis is usually made from the symptoms and ultrasound scan of the ovaries. Blood tests such as thyroid, prolactin, FSH, LH and testosterone are needed in some women. Annual screening should be done for diabetes, blood pressure and blood cholesterol.

With fewer periods (less than in a year), the endometrium (lining of the womb) can thicken and this may lead to endometrial cancer in a some.

blood pressure, high cholesterol level and obesity. These problems, in turn, increase the risk of stroke and heart disease in later life.

During pregnancy, these women have an increased risk for diabetes

Fertility Issues: Fertility treatments in these women have a good chance of success. Tablets such as Clomiphene or gonadotropin injections can cause ovulation. Co-existing hormonal abnormalities, altered blood sugars and overweight need to be corrected before treatment.

For treating period problems COCs or progesterone tablets 5-day course at least once in 2-3 months to protect the endometrium are needed.

Medical methods like cyproterone acetate (anti-testosterone) or combined oral contraceptive pills (COCs) to prevent hair growth and acne are needed in some women.

For treating abnormal hair growth, temporary methods like shaving, waxing, hair removing creams (Eornithine) or long-lasting methods like electrolysis or laser can be used.

Occasionally tablets (such as Orlistat) or operations (bariatric surgery) for weight loss may be considered for women with over weight.

reduced consumption of rice and choosing foods with a low glycaemic index (which are slowly absorbed and keep blood sugar levels steady) such as whole grain foods, pulses, fruits and vegetables helps.

Dr.N.V.Vasudha, MD(Obg) Consultant Gynaecologist Laparoscopic Surgeon & Infertility Specialist Lotus Hospitals for Women & Children

Preventing long- term problems: A healthy life style – eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and losing weight if overweight or obese-is important. This applies to everyone, whether they have PCOS or not. However, it is particularly important for women with PCOS as they have extra risk factors for health problems in later life.

(gestational diabetes) and high blood pressure. So they should be advised to continue the diet control and moderate exercise throughout the pregnancy.
