EDITOR’S NOTE

hew, what a scorcher. After one of the hottest summers on record, I, for one, am very, very glad it’s finally cooling down (though not quite enough to entice me onto my bike just yet). With the new season comes our regular round-up of the best new fashions from the catwalks and ateliers of the hottest designers. As always, Fernanda Langhammer has put her years of experience to good use to come up with ways for you to adapt the latest looks to suit your wardrobe. From funky sportswear to Diva Deluxe, you’ll find it all in our major fashion feature. You’re welcome! To top off our fashion focus, I spoke to Bahrain-based designer Thelna Esterhuizen and, as you can see below, I was rather taken with the contents of her workshop and showroom! October is also the month when we go slightly pink crazy as it seems the whole world is working to increase awareness of breast cancer. Our interviews this month include Lamees Alhassar, who’s written several books on coping with cancer, and Bob Suri, of the Four Seasons, whose property is going all out to help. We’ve also got a full rundown of the official Think Pink calendar, there really are so many ways to get involved and show your support from brunches to golfing and more. And, in our Wellness section, Behnaz Sanjana speaks to Julie Sprakel, founder of Think Pink, to learn more about the psychological and physical effects of the disease and strategies for coping with them. In our lifestyle section chef Anurag Sinha, of the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, shares one of his favourite recipes, which I’m very much looking forward to trying at home, and Puja Tiwari takes us on a trip to some of the world’s greatest fashion capitals. We’ve also got our usual round-up of the latest in beauty products plus a selection of the lotions and potions our favourite celebs have developed. And, if you’re planning a Halloween celebration, don’t miss the parenting section for tips on costumes, spooky snacks and more. Happy reading.

The contest asking you to tell us what you like best about Fitness First Middle East for a chance to win a six-month membership was the most liked post on facebook.

Woman This Month’s contest to win a dinner at Kolors Restaurant - The K Hotel, was the most liked post on Instagram.

Win, Win, Win Since you all loved our Fitness First competition so much, we’ve teamed up with them again this month to offer two more six-month memberships. As the weather cools, it’s time for beach and pool parties. If you’re carrying a few Bahrain summer kilos, now’s the time to kick them into touch with a serious workout programme, and we’re here to help. Fitness First membership gives access to the club’s massive cardio zone, exercise machines, supporting audio and visual entertainment, an extensive free weights area and many group exercises each week. To enter this, and lots of other great competitions throughout the month, you’ll need to head over to our social media platforms and follow the instructions.

Your Comments Our Girly Get Together wellness afternoon at the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa proved very popular. Check out page Social Butterfly for lots of pictures.

The following #WTM post was favourited and retweeted on Twitter the most. WTM’s post about the food at the new Lumee Street Café in Saar was the most liked tweet: Seriously yummy food @lumeestreet #foodie #cafe #restaurant #foodporn #bahrainthismonth #btm #bahrain #biryani

# Trending What’s caught our eye in the news this month. Fatima Nedham scripted history for Bahrain after she won the gold medal in the shotput F-53 event at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Bahrain News Agency Could it be possible to make babies without an egg? Early experiments from a team at the University of Bath suggest it might be. Scientists have succeeded in creating healthy baby mice by tricking sperm into believing they were fertilising normal eggs. Instead, they used “pseudoembryos.” These "fake" embryos share much in common with ordinary cells, such as skin cells, in the way they divide and control their DNA. These embryos normally die without the addition of sperm to make up a complete genome. Until now, it was thought that only eggs could unravel sperm’s DNA in order for fertilisation to occur, but these special embryos can do it too. This suggests that other cells are capable of being fertilised. BBC A Muslim designer made history at New York Fashion Week by showing the first-ever collection to feature hijabs in every outfit. Anniesa Hasibuan, an Indonesian designer, included colourful headscarves in silver, gold and pink in her show. CNN

OCTOBER IN FOCUS What’s on our radar this month?

Dance Yourself Dizzy

We’re very excited about Bahrain’s first Annual Zumbathon. Well-known international instructors Jessica Exposito and Clothilde will be leading the two-hour session alongside Zumba jammer Rellu Päts. The girls-only party gets underway at 7pm on Monday, September 26, at the Ramee Grand in Seef and it promises to be great fun at the same time as raising cash for a good cause. Tickets are BD15 and proceeds are going to the Dreams Society, which helps make sick children’s dreams come true. For information call 33 388-770.

Diva Divine

Paying Tribute

We’re more than a little excited by the arrival of the Diva by Sandra R range of handbags and clutches by former Miss Lebanon, Sandra Rizk, at Seventh Heaven in Al Aali Shopping Complex. Made in Lebanon, these are seriously pretty little pieces of eye- and arm-candy and we feel a little shopping trip coming on.

International luxury brand, Amouage, has Can’t wait for the next edition of Trib Fest, Bahrain’s own live music festival. We’ll be taking our picnic blanket down to the Rugby Club on October 21 for a fun day of music from tribute acts covering the likes of Oasis, Freddie Mercury, Adele and Amy Winehouse. If you missed the last one, these events are great fun for the whole family and also give up-and-coming local acts a chance to get in front of a crowd.

Gemstone Jewellery Festival

Malabar Gold & Diamonds recreates the old world charm of rare precious stones and uncut diamonds in its new jewellery collection. And, to celebrate the launch, it is holding a festival until October 8 offering a range of special deals. Shoppers will get a gram of gold with every purchase of Era Uncut Diamond Jewellery worth BD260 or more and there’s also free jewellery with purchases from the Precia – Precious Gem Jewellery range of BD155 and above. Further offers include zero deductions on old gold in exchange and free making on eight gram gold coins.

Run Along

If, like us, you need a little inspiration to find fitness motivation, ART Rotana at Amwaj has launched the ART Running Club. It’s free for hotel guests and beach club members. For everyone else registration is BD5 for a year, which includes a shirt, and runs will start from the lobby at 5.30pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays and 9.15am on Fridays. Everyone’s welcome to join in for a chance to meet up with likeminded islanders and enjoy getting fit. Register two hours before at beach. art@rotana.com or call 16 000-111 for more information.

Deadly Nightlife The Mexican Dia De Muertos, 'Day of the Dead', festival comes to Bushido on Thursday, October 28, with DJ Ravin of Buddha Bar on the decks. This is Halloween with a Mexican flavour and the entire venue will be transformed

WHO IS SHE?

She’s the one you think of whenever you’re aiming for comfortable and laid-back but at the same time modern and sassy. She’s practical and her personal style fits with her fast-paced life; but that doesn’t mean she’s sacrificed style; on the contrary, her clothes are boldly coloured and super cool. Her actif-sportif outfits are ideal for dropping the kids off to school followed by a casual breakfast with her besties.

22

October 2016

One of her rules is: no heels allowed! But if you can’t kick the addiction, go for platforms or sexy sandals worn with sportive socks (an option usually only pulled off by super-fashionistas!). Her favourite way to gain height is with trendy platforms with a foam sole, which are cool enough to be worn with dresses. Bomber jackets mixed with flowy dresses are at the top of her list of favourite looks. Or opt for racing stripes, track pants and polo shirts to make up this casual and on-trend style.

HILAL CONFERENCES & EXHIBITIONS

ANALEENA JOINS THE PARTY From Harrods to Manama – celebrity handbag brand Analeena has signed up to make its GCC debut at My Wedding Party in March 2017

M

y Wedding Party is the GCC’s one-stop shop for a fashion extravaganza focusing on the wedding sector. The four-day event, staged by Hilal Conferences & Exhbitions (HCE), will take place at Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre from March 15-18, 2017. The Analeena brand is a favourite among the A-list and it’s quite a coup for Bahrain to host the brand’s regional debut. Analeena, translates from Arabic as ‘I am Lina’ and is the brainchild of London and Parisbased designer, Lina Hamed. The signature bags use multihued exotic skins. Each piece has been described as a work of art, with unique blends of colour manufactured by the best Italian craftsmen.

24

October 2016

Lina, a graduate in fashion design from the University of Westminster, started her career as a buyer for Hermes in Paris. As well as developing her talents by co-designing exotic-skin saddles for the high-end brand, she also worked as an assistant designer to Stephen Rolland at Jean Louis Scherrer before launching her own line of luxury handbags, ball gowns and accessories in 2008. The brand has been deliberately kept low key since its debut with Lina explaining: “Luxury, quality and design speak for themselves. The brand projects itself through our clients. These range from A-list celebrities to global business and political figures and royalty. Our luxury collection is exclusively stocked in Harrods in London, the MC Market in

Monaco and Paparazzi Boutique in Azerbaijan.” A-List fans include Jerry Hall, Liz Hurley, Olivia Palermo, Dita Von Teese, Jennifer Lopez and Blake Lively. However, discretion does not allow Analeena to publicise its exclusive circle of customers unless they publicly declare themselves. Analeena’s collection has also been featured in the American TV drama Gossip Girl. Lina adds: “I look forward to exhibiting at My Wedding Party to meet with our existing clients in the region to showcase some of our latest collection which will only have been seen in Paris a few weeks earlier.” “Analeena is known to many of the GCC visitors to London during their shopping trips to Harrods. At My Wedding Party,

visitors cannot only see the handbags but meet with the design influence behind them," says Jubran Abdulrahman, managing director of HCE. “My Wedding Party seeks to add to Bahrain’s credentials as a wedding destination by highlighting the products and services available in Bahrain and that are attracted to the Kingdom as a wedding destination,” adds Ahmed Suleiman, exhibition director. “The attraction of Analeena and a sneak peak of the brand’s 2018 collection, will only strengthen these credentials.” For further information on bookings for My Wedding Party, contact 17 299-123 or info@ hilalce.com www.womanthismonth.com

WHO IS SHE?

She is a woman that looks to her boyfriend/husband’s wardrobe for her own style inspiration. She enjoys slimfit suits, striped shirts and loafers. This season, men’s style is mixed with the military trend. Olive green and camouflage prints spice up warm jackets and add a playful twist to structured and classic cuts. The call to arms, uniform-style, comes from mariners, guards and soldiers with all sorts of coordinated chic thrown in.

26

October 2016

Tailored pieces can become boring after a while, particularly if you stick to black or grey. By teaming this look with vibrant pops of colour, uniform-inspired jackets can add a cool element to your autumn and winter wardrobe. Midlength skirts and feminine shift dresses can be paired with suit jackets and Oxford shoes to play with the feminine or masculine duality. In accessories, a big trend is for men’s watches, which add a cool touch!

WHO IS SHE?

She wears red and gold like no one else! Texture is her fixation and velvet the perfect soft touch to keep her warm on cold nights. Glamour is the word to describe this woman’s style. She never passes unnoticed and even her everyday clothing choices are stunning. Her favourite pattern is animal print that she combines with black and shiny elements. She was born to sparkle and look pretty no matter the occasion; it could be a stroll in the mall or a candle-lit dinner.

28

October 2016

You can opt to go full on flashy (a very difficult task – beware the line between chic and tacky is very subtle) or add elements to transform you into a diva. Red is one of the colours of the season so shop for rich carmine shades. Wet velvet is the textile to bet on! Dramatic looks are beautifully interpreted in this soft fabric presented in an array of shades and shapes. The coolest pieces to look for are dresses and jackets.

WHO IS SHE?

As people say, "Good girls are bad girls that haven’t been caught", so we all have a bit of this woman somewhere inside and we reveal her from time to time. She is probably not a bad girl at all, but her look says otherwise. She likes black, leather and biker jackets. She gives the impression of life lived at its fullest with long nights and short days. Her smokyeye make-up tells us she’s always going to or coming from a party. Is she?

32

October 2016

Her sexiness is defined by tight leather trousers or a leather mini-skirt that she pairs with a checked shirt for a grunge look or feminine floral spaghetti-strap tops. Studs, chains and quilted handbags are in her wish list of favourite add-ons. The '90s are a good time to take inspiration from with its pieces and young punky style. This season’s pieces are updated with new shapes and laser-cut technology. Denim also plays a big part in this girl’s wardrobe with key pieces to add a casual vibe.

The new classic woman doesn’t wear just boring two-piece suits and pencil skirts, she bets on creative cuts and structured pieces to compose her wardrobe. Culottes, wide-legged trousers, midlength skirts, turtleneck tops and trench coats are all favourite items to be mixed and matched. Her monochromatic closet is shared with a few vibrant shades. Black, white, navy and earth tones are the most popular hues. She keeps accessories to a minimum – but goes for stunning uncomplicated designs.

WHO IS SHE?

She lives with one foot in the past bringing together all the best elements of the Victorian times, the 1920s, ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and the ‘recent’ ’90s and mixing and matching for an updated look – a mashup of small details that gives us that déjà vu feeling with a reboot. Her wardrobe is a timeline and most of the pieces are contemporary with a retro inspiration. She knows all the charming hidden restaurants and best places to buy nostalgic décor.

She can wear daring pieces, mainly when influenced by the ’70s and ’80s, but also remain graceful with ’20s- and ’50s-inspired outfits. Mixing elements from different times is the ultimate achievement in mastering this style. Victorian footwear paired with a ’70s dress can result in an interesting combination. As usual, if you find it’s too much all in one go, a vintage accessory or clothing piece teamed with your regular casual wardrobe can boost your look.

PEOPLE | interview

Designing Positivity Fashion maven Thelna Esterhuizen, whose label Est by Thelna recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, tells Liz O’Reilly about getting started and her aim to help women feel good about themselves.

A

n interior designer by profession, Thelna moved to Bahrain for her husband’s work six years ago. Originally from South Africa, she had previously had a thriving interior design business which she continued when the couple initially moved to Oman. Once in the Kingdom she started buying clothes and jewellery to send back for sale in South Africa but, finding competition from areas such as China extremely tough, she decided to have her own pieces made. She explains: “I was buying fabric and having things made up, but I’m impatient. It was taking up to three weeks and, of course, I wanted the pieces straight away. I was in a haberdashery one day when I happened to mention that I was looking for a tailor to work with. Within half an hour I had a call from Ravi, we met and he just gets me. We have been working together ever since.” That was five years ago and Thelna was soon planning fashion shows to display her works, each with a theme that turns the event into a party, from crowns to circus. One year she ran her show at Muharraq Stables – “A logistical challenge but a lot of fun.” And for the future she is planning a popup street show. Ethereal and almost fairy- tale pretty, Thelna’s clothes tell their own story, from the cowgirl and ranch dresses, perfect for wearing with boots, to netted and

48

embellished confections which would not be out of place in Alice in Wonderland. And what they all have in common is Thelna’s own ethic that fashion should be for everyone. Her shows don’t feature stickthin models but rather everyday women – mostly the designer’s own friends. And the magazine she has produced to promote her work takes the same attitude pages filled with average ladies, in all shapes and sizes – having fun in funky clothes. She continues: “Women can be quite intimidating and I wanted

to help them. When I was in Cape Town I did a course with Nina Brown, who’s a colour consultant. I came back and put together my own course called Inner/Outer Beauty which is about discovering your own beauty – you have to be happy from inside. “I ask what do you see in the mirror? Then I try to teach women to see the good in themselves. We’re all very critical of ourselves and sometimes we forget to be happy. That’s also a message I want to send out with my clothes – they’re about helping women feel good about themselves.”

As her adult line was becoming established she found herself in demand in another, rather unexpected, sphere. Asked to design clothes for a friend’s young daughters to take part in an annual kids’ fashion show in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA, she was delighted when the youngsters went on to win their categories. This led to offers of more of designing for kids in the States and Thelna is now in the position where she may have to make a choice between continuing to work on her adult clothing line or working on kids’ fashion full time. She says: “To be honest, I could actually be in the States full time but I do love what I do here and I would miss Bahrain and the clientele I have built up here.” For the moment, she is planning next year’s shows as well as running her classes and holding monthly open house displays at The Art House. So if you fancy a Thelna piece, grab it while you can. g www.womanthismonth.com

Awareness Through Words

A Bahraini author is raising awareness about the psychological effects of cancer through her works.

Lamees Alhassar

W

hen human beings experience a life trauma of any kind, it is not uncommon for their creativity to be unleashed. In the case of Lamees Alhassar, her latent passion for writing was fuelled by the death of a loved one and she has since penned more than 60 books. The seasoned businesswoman always dreamed of putting pen to paper after retirement, but tragedy brought her plans forward, beckoning her to channel her grief into a more productive activity. “I lost my brother to a whirlwind battle with cancer in 2014. This jolted my reality and made me ponder over the transience of life. “I realised that the present moment is all we have, so I began publishing my writing online,” explains Lamees. Her first book, dedicated to her late brother, was about the psychological impacts of cancer and 5,000 copies were distributed around the Middle East. In a bid to give back to the community and bring about awareness, Lamees is campaigning to give out her book to those dealing with the disease. “I am teaming up with the Bahrain Cancer Society, the oncology department of Salmaniya Medical Complex, and hopefully Think Pink to hand out the book. “Doctors will provide the necessary treatment, but the patient has to take care of their mental and emotional wellbeing, which

Her book about the psychological effects of cancer is one of the most difficult aspects about the malady,” she says. “Warriors” is her term for those battling the disease. “They put up a battle with the ailment. Whether they lose or win, they continue fighting gracefully and valiantly till the end. “Change your lifestyle, and be happy, no matter what the end result is. Make the best of whatever time there is,” Lamees advises. The writer says she is constantly inspired, something she credits to a combination of the art of listening and a vivid imagination. “Everyone has a story or an idea, whether a bank teller or a restaurant waiter. All you have to do is listen with an open mind, gather the

stories, and come up with ideas.” A woman of varied interests, she is also an avid artist. After having taken sketching classes, she found painting to be a stress reliever because you focus all your attention on the colours and brush strokes. “This is when I wrote about colouring for adults as a stress management technique. I have since compiled various colouring books for adults and kids,” she adds. Having written various fiction, non-fiction and kids’ books, she is currently working on a sci-fi novel titled Planet Dan-X34. “It is a book set in a time where the owning of planets is now a norm, and how one company owner acquires a portfolio of 33 planets. Some alien businessmen barter an exchange of one of the planets. The swap is with an Earth-like planet with pyramids. These structures are actually gateways to parallel dimensions and the planet’s existence is now at stake,” she explains. Besides that, she has also written numerous books including a series of 10 paranormal books, Planet Robani 1, and The Power of Gratitude, which is her favourite work. “I think gratitude is a trait everyone should have to achieve a fulfilled, happy life. The more you thank, the more you get,” she says. Her work can be found under her name on Amazon and Barnes & Noble Online. www.lameesauthor.com g www.womanthismonth.com

t’s a well-known fact, the world officially turns pink in October and across the island restaurants, hotels and retailers will all be doing their bit to raise awareness of the disease which kills more than half a million women worldwide every year, according to the most recent World Health Organisation statistics. One place that will be making a really big effort is the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where each venue will have something going on throughout the month, raising not just awareness but, hopefully, a sizeable amount of cash too. The initiative is being organised by hotel manager, Bob Suri, who got involved after meeting tireless Think Pink campaigner Julie Sprakel. He explains: “I met Jules and saw a huge opportunity for community outreach, which is one of the core values of Four Seasons – wherever we go we try to be involved in the community. We look for ways to be involved and to give back to the communities we’re operating in. “When I heard about what the organisation in Bahrain aims to do, it touched my heart and I really wanted to help. We have a whole range of activities going on throughout the month and we will be donating part of the proceeds to Think Pink.” General manager Greg Pirkle adds: “Cancer research is very, very important across the

whole Four Seasons chain. Our original founder Isador Sharp is a strong supporter of cancer research, having lost one of his sons to the disease. We’re very, very excited about all the things we have happening during the month and, as well as the activities for guests, we will be having options for staff to get involved and donate.” PINK OCTOBER ACTIVITIES: The Four Seasons Pink Boutique One of the lobby alcoves will be turned into a shop selling Think Pink items as well as goodies from the hotel’s kitchens such as

pink cakes and bakes. Open daily 11am-9pm. Pink Brunch at Bahrain Bay Kitchen The award-winning brunch goes girly with pink décor and desserts every Friday during October. Pink High Tea With a View More pink cakes alongside traditional sandwiches in a venue with fab views for people watching across the lobby or out to the water. Available daily 3pm-6pm. Charity Dinner at CUT by Wolfgang Puck A seven-course dinner prepared

by eight of the island’s leading chefs including the Four Seasons’ own kitchen professionals along with Susy Massetti of Masso, Louis Kenji of Maki and Joan Gomez of La Vinoteca Barcelona. The price will be BD75 and there’ll be a limited number of places available. Pink Moon at Blue Moon Lounge The Wolfgang Puck lounge will be serving a special pink Forbidden Kiss cocktail throughout the month. Poolside Mocktails There’ll also be specially prepared drinks available at the poolside. Special Spa Treatment The spa will be promoting the Air Essence Anahata treatment which is all about healing the heart chakra and fending off disease. The combination package involves a foot wash, scrub, massage and heart work using rose oil and warmed rose quartz. Spa members will also be invited to a talk by Julie Sprakel which aims to raise awareness of the disease and encourage self-checking. Throughout October guests checking out of the hotel will also be given the option to make a donation as part of their bill. g October 2016

ABOUT THINK PINK BAHRAIN Breast cancer is not race-, religion- or class-orientated. It is only with research, education, early intervention and public awareness that we can fight this disease. Think Pink Bahrain is a non-profit organisation founded by Julie Sprakel in 2004. Over the years, the money raised has been directed to The National Campaign for the Early Detection Of Breast Disease, which screens Bahraini women over the age of 40. Think Pink Bahrain is dedicated to increasing breast cancer awareness issues, especially early detection, thereby saving lives. What started as a one-off event to mark Julie’s 30th birthday, is now a nation-wide awareness campaign. Since inception, Think Pink Bahrain has raised over USD600,000. This money has supported various breast cancer initiatives on the island, specifically early intervention, education and awareness. Members of Think Pink Bahrain donate their time, expertise and business acumen to support the ongoing work of the charity. The core principle of Think Pink Bahrain’s philosophy is education. Education is the first step to prevention. When we educate our mothers, daughters, sisters and nieces, we can help them make informed decisions, which may ultimately save their lives. The charity’s ongoing investment in education will enable the people of Bahrain to receive and have access to the best healthcare, with a holistic approach to breast cancer treatment. Think Pink Bahrain aims to empower people at grass roots levels through collaboration with local affiliates to continue to promote the importance of education and screening programmes and community-based outreach projects.

BREAST CANCER – THE RISK FACTORS S

Dr Murat Koc, gynae oncology, obstetrics and gynaecology consultant, explains what women need to be aware of.

tudies have identified many risk factors that increase women’s likelihood of developing breast cancer; but there are things we can do to reduce the danger. Top of the lifestyle risk list is tobacco use, followed by obesity, sun exposure and alcohol consumption – with risk increasing in line with consumption. One of the most widely studied risk factors is the use of hormones in the form of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. Risk is increased 1.24 times for 10 years’ use, normalising 10 years after discontinuation. Of the non-lifestyle issues, age is the most significant risk factor. The disease is rare in under 25s increasing with age, with a plateau at 50-55 years. A family history of breast cancer in a first-degree relative is the most widely recognised risk factor. A family history of ovarian cancer in a first-degree relative,

Dr Murat Koc

especially if the disease occurred under 50, has been associated with a doubling of breast cancer risk. Although 20 to 30 per cent of women with breast cancer have at least one relative

with a history of the disease, only five to 10 per cent of sufferers have an identifiable genetic disposition. Women who have not had children are at greater risk, as are those who’ve had a first pregnancy after the age of 30, whose periods started younger than age 13 or who experience menopause after 50. Regular exercise and a healthy diet may be protective factors for some types of cancer as is breast feeding. And studies suggest physical activity after diagnosis is associated with improved cancer outcomes. Avoiding risk factors and increasing protective factors may lower the risk but it does not mean you won’t get cancer. Reducing high-risk behaviour, being aware of the factors that increase your personal risk and routine check-ups are the best protection. Call 17 812-000.

There are celebrities who’ve lent their faces to various beauty products for cash and exposure. Then there are those who’ve helped develop their own beauty lines and swear they are the secret to their fabulous looks. Here are a few to watch out for.

Juice Beauty – Alicia Silverstone

Goop – Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow created a line called Goop (along with the website of the same name that’s sometimes come under fire) embracing her beliefs of a natural lifestyle. These products are also developed by Juice Beauty, but the whole creation is signed by the Hollywood actress. All products are nontoxic and up to 99 per cent organic. Her favourite product from the line is the Exfoliating Instant Facial with tingling, plant-based cellulose beads. Also look for the vitamin E-packed Enriching Face Oil and the Replenishing Night Cream.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Alicia Silverstone

The vegan actress partnered with Juice Beauty (a brand that formulates its products with certified organic ingredients and no unnecessary synthetic chemicals) to launch a capsule collection of certified-organic make-up and skincare products. The ‘Alicia Silverstone Collection for Juice Beauty’ is full of antioxidant-rich botanicals such as passionfruit, white tea and cucumber. The packaging is made from 95 per cent postconsumer recycled materials and the brand is cruelty-free. Look for the Chamomile Cleanser and Purely Kissable Lip Color.

Salma Hayek

Salma’s grandmother was a beautician, so passion for the beauty field is in her genes. Her line, exclusively sold at the CVS pharmacy chain, includes haircare, skincare and cosmetics. Her products use mainly botanicals and antioxidants like green tea, chamomile, ginkgo biloba and the actress’ favourite ingredient, tepezcohuite. The Mexican star is also a big proponent of not testing on animals. Try out the line’s Blue Agave Wave Enhancing Styling Swirl for a perfect finish.

Jessica Alba

The brand was born from the collaboration of the supermodel and the skin specialist Dr Jean-Louis Sebagh and its aim is to bring youth-enhancing formulas to women. The products have anti-aging ingredients such as the extract of an orchid from the Emerald Coast in France that lives over 100 years. The active molecules are used to deliver energy to aging skin cells. Look for the Lifting Eye Crème – Advanced Formula.

Nuance – Salma Hayek

Cindy Crawford

Meaningful Beauty – Cindy Crawford

The Honest Company – Jessica Alba

Founded by Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan, the company has the ideal of developing eco-friendly, convenient and affordable products for babies and homes. The brand also has a personal care line with products such as Honest Organic Body Oil and Honest Organic Lip Balm Trio. The company is serious about sustainability and its impact on Earth, so its goal is to have all products and packaging made entirely of plant-based materials. And, though the company is facing some legal challenges over both the efficacy of the products and the fully organic claims, the ethos is still a very attractive one.

issues such as acne as well as the visible signs of ageing, Dr Felix aims to provide individual solutions for every patient. He says: “Our most popular treatment is the art of fillers, facial skin resurfacing and rejuvenation through mesotherapy – which treats skin in four different ways: I try to heal

from the inside out and with mesotherapy which involves placing the rejuvenation agent into three layers of the skin. “I also use radio frequency technology, which goes into the deeper layers. This is about new generation of collagen and elastin; life breaks it down, we rebuild it. My goal is permanent, visible skin improvement whether that be for ageing skin or people with acne, which can affect their whole lives.” As well as facial regeneration, the clinic also specialises in areas such as laser hair removal and body reshaping using the VelaShape III system, the first and only non-surgical, medical device for body reshaping and cellulite treatment cleared by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). WEARING GREY HAIR WITH STYLE E

According to experts, grey hair doesn’t necessarily make you look older. Here are some tips on how to embrace your silver side.

veryone knows someone who sports a striking shade of sterling. Great examples are celebrities, such as Diane Keaton and Emmylou Harris, among others, and these gorgeous women have plenty of sex appeal – 71 per cent of respondents in a poll said women with grey hair can be sexy, whereas 78 per cent said the same for men. But even though many of us admire grey hair on others, we're often averse to trying out the look ourselves. Women often think grey hair won't work with their eye colour or skin tone, but the fact is, for every one of those preconceived notions, there's an example to the contrary of someone who looks fabulous grey. Follow these tips from Joz Salon & Spa on how to pull off the look. Transition to all grey: If you dye your hair, the transition to grey can be awkward. To make it smoother, ask a hairdresser for guidance. She may suggest colouring your roots with a semipermanent dye, an ammoniafree colour that covers up to 75 per cent of grey. Once you're ready for the reveal, just let the dye wash out (it can take up to 28 shampoos). Polish your silver: Grey strands are usually drier than pigmented hair, so they have a tendency to frizz and can easily look dull if you're not vigilant about upkeep. Try these tricks for a smooth, chic look and perennial shine: l Use blue-hued shampoos and conditioners only once or twice a month to prevent your hair from taking on a violet cast. l Get a modern cut with clean edges. Ask your stylist not to use a razor, because it can cause the ends to fray, making your whole style seem untidy. Whatever cut

60

October 2016

you choose, be sure to get a trim every six to eight weeks. Grey hair can

start to look unruly if it's not trimmed frequently enough. l Environmental pollutants

and UV light can make any hair colour, including barely pigmented greys, look dull. So wash at least every other day (to prevent buildup) with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner containing antioxidants, which help protect against UV and environmental damage. Label.m Colour Defense Shampoo and Conditioner will be the best. l Even with the right products, grey hair can take on a yellowish cast, so lather with a silver-specific shampoo once or twice a month, a classic product which has a violet toner to counteract any yellow. l Skip heavy pomades, waxes and

oily serums. They can coat grey hair and make it look dusty. To combat frizz, use Ultra Shine spray, a product without drying alcohol. Grey-flattering makeup: Accent your hair with the right clothes and makeup and watch the compliments roll in. When you see a really attractive greyhaired woman, she's often wearing charcoal and silver clothing, which makes her locks even more striking. You don't need to restrict your wardrobe to that colour family, but black, white, shades of grey and jewel tones (ruby red, sapphire blue and deep purples) are your best bets. Avoid earthy tones, such as beige and olive, which can wash you out. If you're going to commit to grey, the labour you save colouring your hair should be switched to putting on makeup, since grey hair tends to make your complexion appear dull. The best place to start is blush. Go for shades like apricot, peach and rose, not beigy or tawny colours – they make your skin tone look muddy. Most important of all, groom your brows (trim wayward hairs) and define your arches with a taupe pencil. Call 17 369-133, 17 756-449 or 16 031-120.

Delegate duties for transport, shopping, preparation of meals – everyone can contribute, but on your terms,” she says. Anxiety, depression and fear are common fallouts of hearing a positive cancer diagnosis and while undergoing targeted treatment for it. However, there are various ways in which to better cope with the gamut of emotions. Research shows that acupuncture boosts the immune system and releases natural painkillers. It may also help to alleviate fatigue, anxiety and nausea. Julie adds that yoga and reiki have shown beneficial support

to patients, pre- and post-chemotherapy, although patients must always inform their consultant of any complementary therapies used. A specialised massage can also drain out the lymphatic fluids to prevent or help with lymphedema and Think Pink has supported training for these specialist therapists. Patients have said that music can be a great mood enhancer. Believe in the power of music and make that playlist of your favourite songs. Communicate your feelings to those close to you or write in a journal as a form of catharsis. Julie says, “Keep your mind and spirit awake – as individuals we all have different ways of coping. You need to find yours and know that there are people and entities within easy reach, ready to help you through your difficulties. Joining a support group could be of tremendous help.”

SAY GOODBYE TO OBESITY C

A chronic health problem on the rise is obesity, which is a result of surplus fat exceeding the body’s physical needs. But fear not, help is at hand.

onsultant general and bariatric surgeon at Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH), Dr Stephen Angamuthu, explains obesity problems, and bariatric surgery offered at the hospital. “Obesity almost always leads to a number of other chronic health conditions, called comorbidities,” he says. “Some examples are cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type II diabetes, pulmonary dysfunction, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, cancer (breast and colon) and many others.” Although it’s difficult to shed all the excess fat through diet and exercise, with proper commitment this can be achieved. However, many find the rigorous routines difficult to follow or are

Dr Stephen Angamuthu

simply unsuccessful. “Bariatric surgery is the perfect option for those who want a permanent solution if a conservative line fails,” says the doctor. “Millions of people worldwide have undergone this operation successfully. As a matter of fact, in most cases, the risks

that arise from remaining obese are greater than those of undergoing surgery.” Dr Stephen explains how the procedure is done at RBH. “We have adopted modern, minimally-invasive techniques to be used whenever the case allows it,” he says. “These methods have made bariatric surgery even safer and include less bleeding and shorter post-operation recovery times.” In order to combat the rising rate of obesity in Bahrain, Dr Stephen recommends people assess their weight and consider their options. “If you decide on bariatric surgery, you will finally see all the beneficial effects it will have on your health, which have been confirmed by

numerous studies,” he adds. “For example, you will prevent obesity-related diseases, have an extended life span, as well as increased energy and selfesteem. The average weight loss expected over three years is 62 per cent of the excess weight. “If you want to know whether you’re a good candidate for bariatric surgery, schedule an appointment with a trusted surgeon, who will be able to assess your case fully and work with you to begin your journey to becoming healthier.” Call 17 246-800 or visit www. royalbahrainhospital.com for appointments and more information.

This renowned medical institution has dedicated a brand new centre in Saar to the wellness of Bahrain’s community.

he American Mission Hospital (AMH) has been providing ambulatory care services to thousands of residents, both young and old, in Saar and Budaiya through its medical and dental centre for the last 16 years. The growing popularity of this clinic has led to the establishment of a new state-of-the-art medical facility on Saar Avenue, near Alosra Supermarket. This clinic will use the latest technology for patient care, and yet retain the feel of a family-centred clinic that has all the facilities required for ambulatory care under one roof. It is expected to open by the end of September and will be easily accessible with ample parking. The centre will feature a dedicated children’s unit with facilities to observe youngsters for up to eight hours under the guidance of paediatricians and paediatric-trained nurses inhouse. imperative support services such as radiology and laboratory facilities and specialisations including ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and internal medicine will be available. There will be a separate section for women’s health and a much larger physiotherapy unit. Great thought has been put into the facility’s aesthetically-pleasing and energy-saving design.

The management at AMH aims to make this a 24-hour service by the beginning of 2017. A brand new dental clinic also awaits. Patients will be seeing some familiar faces as well as new specialists at the medical centre and will receive a high standard of personalised health care. Call 17 253-447.

T

he Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa’s executive chef Anurag Sinha brings more than 18 years of kitchen experience to the role, where he takes great pleasure in utilising both culinary and managerial skills to develop his professional and innovative team. Chef Anurag found his culinary calling at an early age, cooking for the family while his mum was working. It became his passion and he enrolled in the renowned Bombay Technical Board in India and embraced his chosen career. Having started out as chef de partie at a five-star property in Mumbai, chef Anurag gained many years invaluable experience assisting in new menu preparation and catering for up to 1,500 guests in the hotel’s eight conferencing and banqueting facilities. In 2000, he marked the millennium with a move to Dubai as part of the opening team at Emirates Towers, where he worked with executive chef Luigi Gerosa, whose venues regularly appear on the Dubai favourites lists. www.womanthismonth.com

In the intervening years he has worked his way up the kitchen ladder through positions at five-star properties in Oman, Fujairah and Dubai, finishing up at the Ritz-Carlton Dubai DIFC before heading to Bahrain in March this year to take over the reins at the Ramee Grand. Throughout his long career he has gained experience in a range of international cuisines including Italian, French, German, English, Spanish, Mexican, Chinese, Arabic, Thai, Indonesian and, of course, Indian. He puts this expertise to good use across the Ramee Grand’s range of outlets, which offer an eclectic mix from Japanese and Indian fine dining to the extensive international menu of Lemon Tree and a connoisseur's collection of sweet treats at the delightful Tea Garden. Chef Anurag’s signature is presenting traditional dishes using the freshest ingredients and a contemporary twist. Here he shares a favourite recipe for readers to recreate at home.

Method: Wash and clean the prawns and set on kitchen paper to remove excess water. Mix together all the ingredients except the cheese, butter and egg to create a marinade. Use this to cover the prawns and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Peel and boil the potato. Mix together the cheese, butter and egg. Remove the prawns, add the cheese mix to cover and cook in a preheated tandoor (or conventional oven) for eight to 10 minutes. While the prawn is cooking, mash the potato, adding cream and butter and seasoning. Blanch the green beans and then sauté in a hot pan with a little olive oil. Arrange the food on a plate and garnish with vegetable chiffonade. Serve with tamarind glaze.

Tea for Two

Liz O’Reilly finds the newly launched afternoon tea at this downtown venue a welcome break from a hard day’s shopping.

I

’m a firm believer that there are two things a girl can never have enough of – shoes and cake. So, when I heard The Westin’s new bistro and bakery, Furn, was serving afternoon tea, the chance to indulge both my taste buds and an ever-present desire for retail therapy, was simply too good to miss. Served in a purpose-built area of the atrium outside the hotel, the atmosphere is very much traditional with light pouring from above and comfortable garden-like seating. Plates containing a cornucopia of delights are brought to the table and suspended in a kind of bird cage contraption on metal poles resembling shepherd’s crooks. This sounds odd but actually looks really quaint and pretty, so much so that I want one for my garden, and it allows you to remove a plate at a time without cluttering up the table. There are two set menus, high tea and English afternoon tea, and we were lucky enough to try a selection from both. The quail’s egg salad on a bite-size English muffin with mustard cress looked almost too cute to eat – though that didn’t stop my companions who dived in enthusiastically. I went for beef basturma with thyme and onion confit on brioche. The tasty, seasoned, air-dried beef was perfectly complemented by the sweetness of the onion confit and the saffron pita pocket filled with pistachio

70

October 2016

chicken was an interesting nod to more local cuisine alongside the cucumber sandwiches and smoked salmon on rye bread. To be honest, much as I’m happy to sample any number of sandwiches, for me afternoon tea is all about the cakes. And, on that score, Furn did not disappoint. I had been greedily eyeing a delightful butterfly cake with vanilla cream and strawberry jam, the deliciously light sponge and rich filling immediately transported me back to my mum’s kitchen – and trust me, praise doesn’t come much higher than that. The cake tray also contained blueberry tart, a red velvet slice and chocolate choux buns with keshta cream. Almost full to bursting, I felt I must at least try one more, purely in the interests of research you understand. The

blueberry confection was worth the sacrifice with the added bonus of being able to, almost, count it as one of my five a day. One might expect that to be the end of this afternoon indulgence but, no sooner had the cake plates been cleared than the waiter was heading our way again – this time with apple strudel and scones served with clotted cream and homemade jam. Pure English afternoon heaven on a plate, but they did put an end to my shopping for the day. Afternoon tea and high tea at Furn are both priced at a very reasonable BD20++ for two which includes, of course, a pot of tea from the extensive tea menu. I’ll definitely going back, I didn’t quite manage to eat all the cakes.

istro-style café Hévéa serves innovative, gastronomic creations inspired by the era of French colonisation of Southeast Asian countries. It is located on the ground floor of Al A’ali Shopping Complex and provides indoor and outdoor seating for guests. In a bid to constantly evolve the menu, chef and general manager Guy

Gateau and owner Khalid AlShakrani keep abreast of the latest culinary trends and are constantly experimenting. As a result of their endeavours and after much trial and error, the Pistacolada was born! As the name suggests, it is the marriage of rich pistachio cream and finely diced pineapple wrapped in a pistachio-infused crepe. A drizzle of sweet pinacolada syrup harmoniously balances the eclectic flavours. Another popular favourite is the Yellow Akoya Pearl Lamb Shank, which incorporates a typical Bahraini snack. Unique in every manner, the dish has a fun twist to

it. Braised lamb shank is crusted with cheese corn puffs, resting on a bed of Asian rice and cured tomato chili sauce. “Besides serving the staples, we want to engineer the menu in a way that is exclusive to Hévéa, so you will only be

THE SMALL CAR FOR BIG DREAMERS

This model has not only carved out a niche in the premium-compact segment, it also marked the launch of this iconic brand’s new visual identity.

C

utting-edge yet reliable, comfortable yet versatile, the MINI Clubman embodies the new MINI generation’s mantra of innovative design, authenticity and long-term value, its makers say. Since the launch of the Clubman, MINI has emerged as a symbol of innovation, and the preferred choice of the creative class – the group of highly educated, supercreative, innovative, boundarypushing, individualistic, open and diverse members of society. It has been an exciting journey for the brand, which coasted into the collective consciousness in 1959. British Motor Corporation (BMC) enlisted the help of designer Sir Alex Issigonis, who came up with a two-door, four-cylinder engine car, featuring front-wheeldrive, a monocoque shell and incredibly compact dimensions. Over the next few years, MINI blazed a trail through the automotive and cultural scene with an attitude that was part enigma, part energy and all www.womanthismonth.com

confidence. Production on the original MINI – in all of its shapes and forms – continued until 2000. In that time, it became the bestselling British car ever, with 5.3 million sold worldwide. In 2009, as it turned 50, MINI celebrated its heritage with the release of two limited edition models, the MINI 50 Mayfair and the MINI 50 Camden. The presence of the two commemorative models was indicative of the rising

prominence of the brand in the Middle East with year-on-year growth in sales. In 2011, the MINI achieved two major milestones in the Middle East – its strongest ever growth (77 per cent) since the brand was launched in the region and the debut of the MINI Countryman, the first MINI model with four doors. The global debut of the Countryman took the MINI brand off-road and launched its four-

door crossover SUV. The design offers the original MINI Cooper’s agility with increased space, capabilities, safety and quality, its makers say. Carrying forward the racing legacy of the original MINI Cooper, the John Cooper Works subbrand is an exclusive and highperforming model for those craving speed and performance. With top-of-the-range power, speed and acceleration, trim options and added extras, it is a greatlyenhanced version of the original. MINI’s grand reign as the “biggest small car” continues to this day with five core models with strong characters – the MINI Hatch three-door, MINI Hatch five-door, MINI Countryman, MINI Clubman and the MINI Convertible – in addition to the high-performing John Cooper Works models. The journey continues for MINI, as it crafts a new MINI lifestyle and sparks the imagination of a new generation of dreamers and achievers, visionaries and creatives. October 2016

Carve A Laughing Jack-o’-Lantern 1. Buy a pumpkin from your local supermarket or farm shop. 2. Draw a circle around the stem on the top where you want the lid to go. 3. Cut out the lid, make sure you use a sharp knife and angle it inwards so the lid will lift off easily. 4. Use a long-handled spoon or ladle to clean out the inside of the pumpkin. 5. Wipe the inside and leave to dry. 6. Draw your chosen pattern onto the skin with a washable marker – it’s possible to buy ready to cut stencils if you’re not all that confident of your artistic abilities. 7. Either cut out the shape freehand or, take the experts’ advice, and use a sharp pin or screwdriver to poke holes all the way round the shape and then push it through using your knife to even up the edges. 8. Pop a tea light inside, replace the lid and, hey presto, one pumpkin lantern. 9. If you want to hang the lamp rather than standing it on the porch, pierce a hole on either side of the design a few centimetres down from the lid and thread through thin wire.

Create Creepy Costumes Scary mummie:

1. Take a couple of old white sheets – if you don’t have any at home check out charity shops or discount stores. 2. Cut slits around 5-7cm along one edge (they don’t have to be perfect) and then tear along the length of the fabric. 3. To get the aged effect, take a bucket of boiling water, add a few teabags and soak the material for about half an hour. Remove from the water and leave to dry. 4. Get an old white, long-sleeved T-shirt, or tutle neck if possible, and, starting from the bottom, stitch the strips around the shirt. Again, they don’t have to be perfect, make sure you go for uneven and leave ends hanging. You can do this with a sewing machine if you have one but running tacking stitch is fine if you don’t.

5. Cut along the length of the sleeves and attach layers so you don’t have to stitch around. Once you’ve done a few layers and are happy with the look, turn the shirt inside out and sew the sleeves back up. 6. Take white leggings or pyjama bottoms, cut the inside seams and do the same, sewing on strips until you’re happy with the appearance and then stitch the legs back up. You can tie strips together for an authentic look. 7. For hands and feet, add more strips onto socks and gloves. 8. Cover face and head with left over material strips – as little or as much covering as you like – and then add a bit of green face paint, after all mummies are pretty old, so their complexions are probably not great. Dress up your costume with more green and grey or black face paint, but don’t go over the top. www.womanthismonth.com

Serve Up Scary Snacks Spooky bananas: Cute little witch: 1. To make a tutu, take a piece of 2cm wide elastic long enough to go round the waist and cover with wide black ribbon. Buy black tulle or netting and cut into strips around 50-60cm wide, varying the lengths to give a jagged edge. Roll the tulle and cut into 6-7cm sections, cutting a diagonal at each end to emphasise the jaggedness. 2. Hold two or three strips together and fold in half, wrap the loop around the elastic waistband and pull the ends through to attach the strips. Repeat all the way round until the band is completely covered. Remember to vary the lengths. 3. To make the witch’s hat take two pieces of black foam or stiff card. Roll one piece to form a cone. Try it on the child’s head for size and, once you have a fit, mark the edges to cut off excess. Glue or staple the edges together. To make the brim, on the second piece of card, trace a circle round a dinner plate then trace a second ring around the hat hole, make the circle slightly smaller than the hole and cut. Slide the brim over the top of the cone so that it sits at the edge. Add a strip of tulle at the join for decoration. 4. Dress your little one (or yourself) in a black longsleeved T-shirt and leggings with some scruffy long, stripy socks for added effect. Add the tutu, hat, face paint, wand, broomstick and anything else you can think of.

You can either stand these on a place or use lolly sticks. If using sticks cut the bananas in half and push a lolly stick into the middle of each banana. For a healthy option, simply add faces with chocolate chips. If you’re going for a more grown-up option, melt white chocolate in a bowl, around 200g for four whole bananas. Coat the bananas in chocolate. Layer desiccated coconut in a shallow dish, roll the bananas in it to roughly coat. Lay on a sheet of baking paper and use chocolate chips to form eyes nose and mouth. Freeze for around five hours.

Witches’ Fingers Cookies Take a tube of shop-bought cookie dough to save time. Split the dough in half. Put one piece into a bowl and knead in a little flour. Take small balls and roll into sausage shapes about as long as your finger. Pinch above and below the middle of the roll to form a knuckle and make three shallow scores across this area. Do the same with the second half of the dough but add a little green food colouring for a little extra atmosphere. Add sliced almonds as fingernails and bake for 10 minutes at around 180 degrees. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. You can use jam or bright red coloured icing to give a bloody touch around the nails and at the stump. (For a savoury option, use pizza dough and sprinkle with cheese and tomato ketchup.)

Hair-raising Mini Pizzas Use ready-made puff pastry, cut into finger-food sized circles. Top with tomato paste, cheese and anything else you fancy. Bake in the oven and then add halved black olives or slices of pastrami. Slice thin slivers of olive or sausage and position as legs to form spooky spiders. To save even more time you can do this with a cooked, fairly plain, shop-bought pizza, just add spiders on top. www.womanthismonth.com

Beat the Bullies II

PARENTING| issues

Lamar Kanafani, the island’s first, and so far only, licensed marriage and family therapist, writes for WTM on the issues that concern mums.

How to deal with bullying when your child is the bully.

T

he way I see it, it’s never easy to discover that your child is being bullied. I believe it’s just as difficult to be told that your child is the one doing the bullying. In last month’s article, I wrote about things you can do as a parent to help your child if they are facing a bully. Here we’ll be talking about what you can do should you receive complaints that your child IS the bully. There are many possible reasons why children bully. Sometimes bullying is cultural in a society where power, competitiveness, winning and violence are noticed and encouraged. Sometimes bullying occurs institutionally where there is not a high standard of behaviour and where superiors mistreat subordinates, for instance. It can also be a method of communicating feelings of internal anger, stress, trauma, insecurity, frustration, fear, jealousy, envy, embarrassment, loneliness or even sadness by people with poor communication skills and poor personal coping mechanisms. Most commonly and most importantly, chances are that bullies behave the way they do because of an unstable, conflictual or dysfunctional home environment, whether mild or severe in nature. For example, growing up in a home where one or both parents are physically or emotionally neglectful, unavailable or unsympathetic. Or living in a home where the child witnesses continuous or intense arguments amongst family members. Bullying is a learned behavior and tends to have a trickle effect, where the child adopts those same techniques and applies them to others. Moreover, children who are confused by their parents’ parenting approach also resort to bullying others to communicate their inner turmoil. Many parents struggle to find a balance www.womanthismonth.com

between being overly strict or overly permissive and that can be confusing to the child. Bullying is a way of acting out. Whatever the reasons may be, children’s bullying is a reactionary behaviour that communicates “My needs are not being met. I am emotionally overwhelmed about that and this is the only way I know how to behave in order to get my needs met." And this is a very important point to consider when we attempt to help a bully change their behaviour. It certainly doesn’t happen through putdowns, punishment, shaming or instilling guilt in the child. This would only make it worse. Some parents are convinced that these methods 'work'. However, most of the time, the child has been silenced to submission, still harbouring all sorts of unresolved emotions, and will recommunicate the underlying issues in other ways. Consequently, bullies

Lamar Kanafani are probably more in need of love, attention, understanding, empathy and acceptance by the people they love the most. So in order to begin to help your child stop the bullying behavior, the first thing parents needs to do is admit to themselves that their child is having a problem and also that they themselves play a role in maintaining their child’s behavior. Taking a stance of denial won’t help anyone involved. One very important parenting skill to apply here is listening with empathy and acceptance: taking the time to understand what’s going on in your child’s thought processes and feelings and letting them know that they are entitled to those feelings, whether you agree with them or not. Their bullying behaviour towards other kids may not be related at all to their targeted victims; rather, it could be a product of issues going on at home, at school or any other setting or people they are regularly exposed to (or even deprived of). Children have many needs: for stability, predictability, structure, respect, consideration, parental time, privacy, peace, attention, understanding, autonomy, connection, trust, inclusion, safety, laughter, support, guidance… the list goes on. Our children will socialise more effectively and excel academically and personally if we make sure to get those needs met. If you feel you need professional intervention to help you through that, then seek it. Work closely with the school to decide together on an appropriate course of action to get those needs met in their school setting with an end goal in mind of eliminating the bullying behavior and replacing it with other forms of communicating and socialising. PARENTING | advice

Need to Know

Q

Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center. Each month she answers your parenting questions.

My teenage daughter is taking an interest in fashion for the first time, she’s always been a tomboy up till now. My worry is that she wants to wear high heels and I know these are bad for her feet and general development. Can you please tell me the risks and how I can minimise them without spoiling her fun? I’ll make sure to show her your answer.

A

There is a huge distinction between young girls wanting to emulate adults as part of role-play and permitting them to wear heels every day. Children wearing high heels for long periods is a colossal concern. Children are growing, so their bones are very soft. Children’s feet are shaped differently to adults’; they are rounder, plumper, softer and more pliable. If you alter the pose of the foot, then their bones can ossify into a misshapen position. It is not about aesthetics, we are having a discussion about her feet becoming functionally imperfect. The human foot does not finish developing until around 18 years of age. When the heel is held higher than the ball of the foot, the Achilles tendon shortens. Extended weight-bearing by the ball of the foot can crush the toes together, forcing them into a bent shape and, in a number of cases, causing nerve damage. It’s not only the foot that is debilitated by wearing heeled shoes. Calf muscles may become shorter and tighter. The pelvis and spine are pushed out of alignment and amplified pressure is placed upon the knees. The bones of the legs do not finish growing and forming until the mid-teens and the changes to posture inflicted by wearing heeled shoes could well lead to permanent deformity in the bones of the ankles, knees and hips.

Q

My 16-year-old son seems to have developed an issue with hygiene. On school days he will get himself up and get ready just fine, but when he doesn’t have to go to school, he doesn’t shower for days on end or even brush his teeth. It sounds funny but, frankly, he’s getting a www.womanthismonth.com

bit smelly! I haven’t said anything so far but would welcome some advice on how to broach the subject.

A

Personal hygiene is essential for all children but it becomes a particularly serious business after puberty. Failing to practise good head-to-toe hygiene as a teenager can be repulsively obvious to those in close proximity. Good hygiene practices during the teen years can preserve, improve and avert a teenager’s self-esteem from taking a nose dive. Conversations about your son’s hygiene should include puberty and the emotional and physical changes a teenager can expect. Steer clear of power struggles over hygiene, but be adamant that personal hygiene is his responsibility and, like other responsibilities, there are consequences for neglecting his duties. It is imperative not to dance around these issues, but to be straightforward and candid. Continue to chat about hygiene issues

in the context of the facts about puberty, body changes and why daily attention is important to health and cleanliness. Context will help your son understand hygiene is not just his problem. Interestingly, a survey of 904 14- to 17-yearold children from secondary schools around Nairobi was done to find out if there was any relationship between tooth brushing frequency and personal hygiene habits. The students completed a questionnaire anonymously in class. Of those students who brushed their teeth more than once a day, 52 per cent bathed daily, 22 per cent used perfumes/deodorants daily and 50.1 per cent always washed their hands after visiting the lavatory. No relationship was found between washing of hair and tooth brushing frequency. These findings indicated that tooth brushing was closely related to personal hygiene habits. Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month Libra

Trouble comes looking for you this month as an error at work leads to a financial loss that could end up costing you dearly. Perhaps your concentration has been affected by distractions in your personal life. The advice is to quickly shape up or the final consequences will be drastic! Your best defence to the circumstances may be to plead ignorance. However, if you are fortunate enough to escape the matter with your situation intact, ensure you learn from the error.

Sagittarius

Here’s a dilemma relating to a business interest for many of you to ponder over this month. A work colleague with a plan to start a new business, which carries a high risk factor, may approach you. Whilst risk is not a word you often allow to enter your vocabulary or thinking, this opportunity is one that should not be dismissed without a little applied thought. So long as the investment figure suggested is a low one, think hard about the idea. The rewards could be great.

Capricorn

How many times have your friends told you to bite your tongue? For some of you out there I think the answer might be quite a few. You have a reputation for being one of the less diplomatic signs in the Zodiac – especially when your temper gets the better of your reason! You need to take this on board or you could find your life complicated beyond measure over the next few weeks where a family dispute is concerned. www.womanthismonth.com

disposal and assess your own strengths. You may be surprised to discover that you have a few more talents than you were aware of.

Taurus

You will find yourself celebrating a career move as you position yourself in a new role that offers up a great deal of potential. You should take particular pride from the fact that you have fashioned much of this by yourself and when others look to the source of your success, then the answer will be obvious. On the travel front there is the opportunity to visit a luxury destination for a well-deserved rest, which is long overdue.

Gemini

Have you been feeling lately that everyone around you relies upon you too much? Do you sometimes think that a little help from those closest to you would make a lot of difference? Well if that’s the case then perhaps it’s time for you to put your foot down and exercise a little of that fiery temperament you are so famed for. For too long now you have been taken advantage of and the situation has to change.

Scorpio

October may not kick off in exactly the way you would have liked as a course of events you had been banking on at work suddenly unhinges forcing you to reassess your longterm position. If you had been hoping for a promotion or pay rise then the chances are you should prepare to be disappointed. Things might come good towards the end of the month but for now just keep your head down and get through this minor blip.

horoscopes

Cancer Aquarius

If there is someone who has caught your eye, now is the time to kick some romance back into your life and make a determined effort to get yourself noticed. Don’t be fooled by the individual’s apparent lack of interest – it’s all a ruse! Underneath that unconcerned exterior lies a similarly interested person who will need little encouragement to give you a chance. Just be yourself and don’t try to change your character.

Pisces

October is a time for you to strengthen your resolve and prepare for a difficult month ahead as certain pressures within your community or close family leave you with your back against the wall. You may even find yourself turning to an unlikely source for assistance towards the end of the month. If there have been concerns about a relationship then you should allow your feelings to come out into the open.

Aries

October will see you reflecting on the year and perhaps slipping into a more thoughtful and self-analytical phase as you reassess your working roles. It could be that you are feeling unsatisfied or even unappreciated and the need for a more challenging job forces you to take steps towards a change. Use the skills at your

Tears of joy and sadness will be shed by many of you this month as separate events in your life draw you through both ends of the emotional scale. A painful separation could force you to re-evaluate your home life while a piece of good news concerning work may see you land a tidy sum just when you need it. A mixed bag but one that delivers as well as bringing a difficult issue to a close in the best way you could hope for.

Leo

It’s a new era and a positive light floods your sign this month. A young child will give you good reason to feel proud as an achievement at school or college comes to light. Also, you could find yourself in for a “pat on the back” at work as your keen eye notices an error that could end up saving money for the company. Perhaps now you will start to be appreciated for all that extra effort you put in.

Virgo

October sees you taking a more favourable turn in the financial stakes and an increase of funds could arrive from an unexpected source. A forgotten policy or savings plan could suddenly mature and land a muchneeded bonus in your lap. Just use it wisely, as this could be the opportunity that sets you on your way. If you have any debts that need to be settled – even with family members – you need to clear these as well. October 2016
