The Director’s Court spring • 2017 Winter is for Walking

Are you sitting a bit too much? The facts show that physical inactivity now rivals smoking as one of the nation’s biggest health problems. In the winter, it’s best to get out and make the most of the daylight - and walking can be an excellent way to fight those winter blues! Make sure you’re on well-lit paths if you walk in the evenings - and wrap up warm with lots of layers. Walking is already one of most popular physical activities in the world. It’s open to nearly everyone – only 4% of us need help to walk outside our homes or can’t do it at all. For most of us walking is as simple as slipping on a pair of shoes and opening the front door. It’s perfect for people who have poor health, or don’t fancy intense exercise. There are lots of reasons why walking is so accessible: • Walking is free – you don’t need expensive gym membership or special shoes to take part • Walking is gentle, so you’re unlikely to get injured • It’s fun to get together with friends and go for a walk • Get the kids to join you with scooters • You can do it almost anywhere at any time • You can start off slowly and build up gradually as you get more confident. Walking makes a great ‘gateway’ to the world of exercise because it often inspires people to try out other healthy activities. Walking may be straightforward, but it’s also effective. The walking counts towards those all-important 150 minutes of moderate physical activity everyone should be doing. Aside from boosting your health, walking has positive benefits for the whole community too. Taking a walk means you see more of your friends and neighbors out on the street. Studies show that this can help everyone feel part of the community and actively reduces crime. Be Active and Be Well,

Winning Edge Quarterback & Receiver Camp Ages 10 and older

Providing Quarterbacks and Receivers the technical, physical and leadership tools that they need to succeed! According to Coach Smith “The Quarterback position is perhaps the most difficult position to play. It’s also the most under coached. No matter how talented the athlete is playing quarterback requires a strong foundation built on proper mechanics. It’s also a LEADERSHIP position! To be a great Quarterback you have to be a strong leader who has been trained as one because there is no such thing as a born leader.” Coach Smith’s camp not only teaches proper fundamentals required for becoming an elite quarterback or receiver but also places heavy emphasis on leadership and character development. Bring water & cleats / QB’s bring football. Wristbands and lanyards provided. Conducted by Eric Smith, former NCAA Division-1 Quarterback and High School Coach. Quarterbacks will learn stance, voice, drops from center and shotgun, proper footwork for pocket mobility, proper throwing mechanics, throwing on the run, play action, option techniques, eye discipline, defensive recognition, leadership skills and drills for self-improvement. Slow motion video analysis will also be included. Receivers will learn stance, release, going into and coming breaks, route running theory, using leverage to gain an advantage, proper catching mechanics, eye discipline and drills for self-improvement. Outdoor Exploration is a hands-on outdoor program created for kindergarten through eighth graders that utilizes local trails as a unique location setting for education and recreation. Outdoor Exploration gives youth the opportunity to gain hiking and adventure skills while using the local environment as their classroom, employing a comprehensive science curriculum that is designed to meet Common Core Standards for science. This program not only helps participants acquire outdoor living skills, but learn the importance of safety in nature, gain a better understanding of the local environment its resources, beauty, and ecosystem, and to overall, experience the great outdoors to be an endless source of education and discovery. During the regular school year (September through November and February through May, weather permitting) teachers schedule a day to spend with the Outdoor Exploration instructors with the Whiskeytown trails as their laboratory. Redding Recreation’s Outdoor Exploration program provides an instrumental opportunity for youth to fundamentally learn, embrace and actively participate in both, a classroom setting and a natural habitat, in order to ignite and further develop an interest in the field of science and to respect and appreciate our limited natural resources.

Mini Explorers-Saturday STEM

Work together and build togetherEngineering challenge

Redding Recreation believes it is important to engage the child’s curiosity by providing STEM-based activities. We playfully motivate children by reinforcing STEM-based principals (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math), while enhancing self-esteem, improving fine-motor skills, building team work, and cooperation. Mini Explorers will be inventing, constructing, experimenting, and connecting to nature during these great STEM Saturday adventures.

When a young child is playing with blocks or stacking toys, they are learning about engineering. As they take on the challenge they are also learning about team work, problem solving, and cooperation. Children explore different kinds of building materials to create and build projects like bridges, ramps, houses, and more!
