Main facts

HARD FACTS The hard facts are exactly that the hard. You take off from the 27m platform, accelerate faster than a sports car during your spins and twists and hit the water at speeds of approximately 85kph just three seconds later. The impact on the body is exceptionally hard. On a body that is not protected at all; at least not visibly.

Introduction

It’s pure. It’s fast and takes your breath away. Cliff divers leap aesthetically from almost three times the Olympic height and hit the water at speeds of 85kph, protected only by their concentration, skill and physical control. Since 2009, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has featured the biggest talents, the most promising newcomers, and since 2013 has also provided a platform for women. Seven tough competitions for the men, three challenges for the women – in its sixth season this jaw-dropping sport will hit new as well as proven ground in the Caribbean, the continents of North and South America and Europe between May and October to determine a new champion for both men and women.

World Series

Exciting Initial Position After Colombia's Orlando Duque, in 2009, and the three-time champion, Gary Hunt, from England, it was 30-year-old Artem Silchenko who took the 2013 crown in a red-hot final competition in Thailand last October. This coming season, the Russian and nine other top athletes will fight for the World Series title together with up to four wildcards at each stop, showcasing more gravity-defying freefall all across the globe. 2013’s rookie of the year, and the World Series’ youngest athlete, Mexico’s Jonathan Paredes, and the rising stars from the USA, David Colturi and Steven LoBue will challenge the grand masters of cliff diving. Based on their overall performance in 2013, America’s Andy Jones and Poland’s Kris Kolanus have been confirmed as the final two athletes to make up the permanent list of ten divers for 2014.

08

High Standards From an individual’s passion high diving has turned into a recognized sport, which draws people’s attention worldwide. “It’s getting more and more interesting for new divers to come into the Series, because it’s kind of a prestige thing, it’s the top in our sport. Just like in any other sport there is the one event that everybody wants to participate in and wants to win. This is what every high diver wants to win. Not because you’re on TV or in magazines, no. Everybody in the sport knows your name after you’ve won this one,” Orlando Duque explains. In 35 competitions between 2009 and 2013, the athletes have pushed the sport to such a high level that American Greg Louganis – four-time Olympic gold medallist and the most successful diver of all time – predicts an even brighter future for cliff diving: “This Series standardized the sport. The height is always between 26.5m and 28m; they have the fixed degree of difficulty and a good panel of judges. Consequently, the divers know better what to expect and can prepare better. I think it’s very possible that cliff diving becomes an Olympic sport. There is so much more talent coming into the sport. It’s an exciting time for cliff diving.” The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series aims for guaranteeing the highest possible quality in this sport, featuring the world’s best athletes as well as young talent, and, since 2013, women as well. It provides them with a platform to excel and express their passion over and over again.

TIME TO DIVE They defy gravity, perform tricks of breathtaking complexity and reach speeds of more than 85kph in less than three seconds – cliff divers not only pursue the purest extreme sport on earth, but it’s a sport that’s also rapidly-evolving. As the pinnacle of cliff diving competition, the 2014 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series takes the next step and provides a platform for female athletes offering a fully-fledged women’s World Series.

Athletes As the pinnacle of cliff diving competitions, the 2014 World Series once again spotlights the sport’s top athletes. Ten men and five women from nine nationalities will excel in performing at the highest level and fighting for glory, challenged by a series of wildcards and also the elements. In its sixth year, the title is decided during seven competitions for the men and three for the women.

Locations The sixth season kicks off with aesthetic leaps from the picturesque Morro Castle fortress at the entrance of Havana Bay, Cuba. From the environment where modernity and colonial constructions go hand-in-hand, this prestigious series of competitions comes next to the USA’s Lone Star State. Back in Europe, the cliff diving elite returns to Ireland’s Aran Islands and the mysterious blowhole known as the Serpent’s Lair. Mid-July, and the midway point of the 2014 World Series, takes the divers back to Norway’s Kragerø. After this touch down in Europe’s north, the World Series touches Portuguese soil once again after thrilling competitions on the Azores in the previous seasons. The second-to-last stop is in Bilbao, Spain, for the business end of the World Series before the divers leap over the ocean to South America’s biggest country, Brazil, where the coronation of the 2014 World Series champions will be held in Niterói at the end of October. 09

Risks

The highest risk of injury occurs during the landing phase, when parts of the body are already exposed to absolute deceleration and others, above the surface, are still at full speed. At this point, maximum physical tension is absolutely crucial. Immediately after hitting the water, the athlete has to actively dive away to avoid compression or contortion of parts of the body due to the hardness of the water. However, major mistakes can be ruled out because of the divers’ technical training and experience.

However, major mistakes can be ruled out because of the divers’ technical training and experience.

A pancake landing from such heights can be compared with a hard landing from 13 metres on concrete. That is why only about three to four dozen athletes worldwide engage in this elite extreme sport. Generally speaking, high diving over 28 metres does not bring a lot of time benefit due to the rapid acceleration; however, the risk of injuries increases disproportionately.

Cliff diving – a mental game and a question Cliff diving of balance – a mental gam We’ve been following the world’s best cliff divers for a few years now and we’ve seen them fighting for the highest possible score, for victory and for the one perfect dive. Abs, obliques and anything that works the back to make sure you can squeeze your body into tight shapes and keep your legs together in the air. A strong push with good strong legs is important to impress the judges as well as to handle the impact, so the legs don’t separate in the water and you run the risk of tearing a muscle. Keyword – G-force! It’s trying to pull you out of shape the whole time. In the end it all comes down to the best possible performance in the air and a ripped entry – the perfect dive. 10 world championship titles later and 39-year-old Duque still strives for it. “When you manage the three elements – take-off, flying in the air, and then the water entry with no splash – it’s the best feeling in the world. Underwater you know it; you’re just so happy already.” The ability to control an action-packed dive from the height of an eight-storey building reaching speeds of up to 90kph doesn’t come overnight and the chances of reaching perfection grow with every new day of dedicated training on a physical as well as a mental level. Besides all the technical training that has gone in over the years – most of the elite group of athletes started diving before entering school – cliff divers need to be in the right mindset when they walk down to the end of the platform. It’s about the right balance between being calm and energetic. “You need to be very clear in your head and mainly very relaxed. It’s very difficult to get relaxed when you’re standing that high and you’ve got a big dive to do. It’s an art. It’s a lifetime’s work to be able to teach yourself the tricks and the traits to get that perfect dive,” says Blake Aldridge, the former British Olympic diver.

World Series champions

TRUE CHAMPIONS

20

The World Series has had three champions – Artem Silchenko, Gary Hunt and Orlando Duque. Since the very beginning, these three men have rarely missed a podium. Rivals for years, respect for each other unites them…

Orlando Duque on… Artem Artem decided to go on the blind entries and we all see it is crazy, but it’s working for him. Somehow he managed to control it, he scored very high on some of those dives that some of us don’t even imagine. He is doing great. Before it was maybe a little bit of a gamble, he was hitting some, he was missing some, but now he is doing it pretty consistently, I know he feels more comfortable with the dive so that’s going be a plus for him winning last year’s Series. I know he is going to come with difficult dives as always, he does very beautiful dives, with very nice technique, so of course he is going to be the guy to beat, and it makes for a better competition. Gary Gary is the mega-champion! He is the person we know we have to beat. He has the DD, he has the technique, he dives near perfect, his water entries are near perfect. And he is like cold-blooded – it doesn’t even faze him the conditions, the height, the difficulty, nothing. He is always ready to do it. He is going to want the title back. Artem won last year, Gary wants it back. He is training hard, you know he is preparing himself, you know he will come hard with all his tricks, possibly he will even change some of his dives, because I know he has some other dives in his mind. It is going be tough, it is going be a tough competition for Artem coming from Gary and from myself and all the other guys. It couldn’t be any better I think – 2014 is looking awesome!

Gary Hunt on… Artem Artem is a true champion of cliff diving because he is a fighter. He is a great example of showing how hard work and persistence can pay off because he has gone through so much pain and suffering with his blind armstand dive and he never once thought about changing it back to a simpler dive. He just knew he had to persist and fight through it and look where it has got him. He’s come through in 2013 doing that dive without hurting himself and doing it sometimes incredibly well, perfectly almost. And so I have to take my hat off to him for doing a dive that I would never think about doing and doing it so well. Orlando Orlando has to be one of the champions because he has been exactly that for so many years and he is really the face of the sport. Anyone who knows cliff diving knows about Orlando Duque, because you have seen him on the top of the podium for so many years. He was the guy that I wanted to be when I was younger watching the sport and he is still around now getting good results and so it’s really an incredible feat to be on top of your game for so long.

Artem Silchenko on… Orlando Orlando is a legend. He is a beautiful cliff diver, he has fantastic entries. I think every diver misses an entry every now and then, but if Orlando misses an entry it is a surprise for everyone, because he is just so consistent! He doesn’t show difficult dives, but he has a very good level and he is Orlando Duque! No need to explain… Gary Gary is a crazy guy, he is so fast, he looks like he is scared of nothing and I don’t see his limit. Gary has beautiful entries and he does the most difficult dives in the world now. He has been the World Series champion three times and he is one of the best cliff divers in the world! 21

Women

NEW

THE START OF SOMETHING

Women push the boundaries and get their own World Series champion in 2014

“Cliff diving is cliff diving. Women are just a lot more graceful,” says Orlando Duque. The first-ever women’s competition in Red Bull Cliff Diving last season on Italy’s Lake Garda brought about new and exciting times for this sport and showcased that diving from dizzying heights is not a question of male or female. Female athletes use the same technique, show a lot of difficulty and have just as much passion for the sport. The height is the only major difference, however this too could melt away over time. TV stations came to follow the female competition, with many hundreds of likes and comments on the Red Bull Cliff Diving Facebook page and a big crowd of spectators around Scaliger Castle on Lake Garda left in awe – the women’s competition back in 2013 drew a lot of attention to the sport and its protagonists. “It’s been a long time coming to have a women’s event and they’ve done a lot of hard work to get here,” knows cliff diving expert Joey Zuber, who’s been in the sport for almost twenty years, “I have to take my hat off to the women, they’re incredibly brave and they are the best in the world. I’ll challenge anyone to stand on the end of the platform and look down 20m and see how it feels. These girls are amazing.” Five of them were nominated to be part of the permanent line-up for the first Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series which crowns a female champion: Anna Bader (30) from Germany, Ginger Huber (39), Rachelle

40

Simpson (26) and Cesilie Carlton (33) from the US and Jacqueline Valente (28) from Brazil. Each of them has a platform diving or gymnast background; they share the passion for great heights and – in their own words – love the adrenaline rush that comes from cliff diving. For the attentive follower of Red Bull Cliff Diving, these parameters are well known from the male athletes. What is it that distinguishes women’s and men’s cliff diving? If anything, it’s the height. While 27m is the average height in the World Series for the men, the women’s platform is mounted 20m above the water. “It has to do with experience. We’ve been doing this for a few years already, so we are a little bit more comfortable and we’ve trained specifically for this height. The women haven’t had that much experience; that doesn’t mean they can’t jump from where we are, it’s just a matter of experience. Even if you bring a guy who is in his first year, he’s going to be very scared,” explains Colombian Orlando

Duque. Physically speaking, the impact from 20m is simply not as strong, however: “It still is not something that you would just want to do consistently over and over again. You do a couple and do your best to get those ones right and then let your body rest for the next day,” Ginger Huber, a cliff diver for 18 years, makes clear. It’s now less than a year ago that female grace was introduced to the World Series and Ginger Huber’s wish – ‘hopefully this can be the start of something new’ – already comes true. “They’re going to fight hard, which is what it’s all about. I know it’s going to be tough.” Ten-time world champion Orlando Duque was stoked when the female competitions were confirmed for 2014.

Don’t miss the girls showcasing diving excellence in the USA, Norway and Brazil this year!

Orlando Duque, Colombia, after winning the title in 2009

Orlando winning

“I have been competing for so many years and pressure is something I am used to, but I have never seen a fight like this. This is not just another title, it’s the one I had to fight most for! After my second dive I was still out of the title but I knew I can improve and get the fourth place at least. This title results from my long term strategy of doing consistent dives the best way I can. I was leading before and that gave me some comfort for the final. I am not just going to lean back with this title, I know I have to react and I will!”

“This year has been the hardest without a doubt. It felt like everyone was on top of their game and you had to be diving really well to win it. Waiting for the final score was one of the most nerve-wracking times of my life. I saw that it was an amazing dive from Orlando and then saw the scores but those few seconds were really nerve-wracking. I didn’t want to calculate it before hand but to see it up on the screen and how close it was... wow! It was just the best competition I’ve ever done!”

“I cannot believe it – at this moment it is pure emotion and there is nothing really you can say. I’m starting to understand that I’m the best high diver for 2013 and that has always been my dream. Now I have it! It’s a beautiful dive, close to my best one and I felt it under water. I started diving in 2006 and I’ve come a long way! This is my fifth season in the World Series and I have been training and working hard for this moment.”

The degree of difficulty of a dive is evaluated on the basis of the following: take-off, number of somersaults, number of twists, position during the somersaults and entry into the water.

There is no need for equipment. Cliff diving is the athlete versus gravity – which is one of the main reasons why so many people are intrigued by the sport.

Improvement and evolution are crucial aspects of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Besides offering jaw-dropping diving action, the World Series also intends to push the limits of high diving. Bringing together the best of their kind and providing them with a stable platform height and a set number of competitions broke new boundaries in its very first year of existence. Gary Hunt’s triple somersault with four twists – the Triple Quad – is the first dive conceived exclusively for cliff diving and has a degree of difficulty of 6.2. The evolution of high diving, which began in 2009, continued in the past years following intense off-season preparation. More jaw-dropping action is guaranteed in 2014, with 27-metres dives into unforgiving, concrete-like water.
