CURRENT/RECENT CINEMA RELEASES SUPER 8 RELEASED IN UK CINEMAS: 5th AUGUST 2011 A collaboration between JJ Abram and Steven Spielberg, this film is set in 1979, and a group of young friends witness a catastrophic train crash while shooting a zombie horror super 8 movie. The US Air Force soon takes over the scene and they realize it wasn’t an accident. Unusual occurrences and disappearances begin to take place in their town and the local Deputy, father to one of the kids, tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than they could’ve ever imagined! Immediately after, I concluded that it’s simply E.T with a bigger budget combined with elements of Cloverfield. That’s mean it wasn’t a great film as it definitely has intensity and thrills, which caused me to jump countless times; something a film hasn’t done for me in a while! However, it’s more a movie about the love of movies - a celebration of the spirit of making films. Even though, it’s been hyped as a sci-fi monster movie, the focus is on the kids and how they develop as the film progresses. Their performances were fantastically funny, quirky and moving and you fall in love with their imagination and passion for film. This was evident when everyone in the cinema stayed to watch their completed zombie horror film, which played whilst the credits rolled; incorporating the scenes we saw them shoot in the movie.

MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS RELEASED IN UK CINEMAS: 5th AUGUST 2011 Based on the American children’s bestseller originally published in 1938, Tom Popper (Jim Carrey), a divorced but very driven and successful real estate agent in New York, finds it difficult connecting with his two children. Until he inherits six penguins from his late and long absent explorer father, named Captain, Loudy, Bitey, Stinky, Lovey and Nimrod! They turn his life upside down and his swanky apartment into a winter wonderland! Having to care for them however, teaches him how to love again. An extraordinary fact was that they filmed with real Emperor penguins with only moments of CGI! I went to see this film with my 5-year-old brother, not expecting too much and assuming Jim Carey was accepting any script offers. Many people are tired of Carrey’s over-the-top comedic performances. This time, however, Carrey was more subdued; one aspect among others that helped to create a film that turned out to be delightful, touching and extremely funny, where I laughed out loud many times alongside my little brother! It was lovely to see parents genuinely laughing with their children as well, despite some elements that are simply nonsense. That is the beauty of it though! The film reminds us that moments of fun nonsense are healthy for everyone! Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a family film guaranteed to melt hearts!
