2012 Minnesota Stars FC Coaching and Technical Staff Manny Lagos

Carl Craig

Kevin Friedland

Jon Lowery

A St. Paul native, Stars head coach Manny Lagos is off to a successful start to his coaching career. Lagos enjoyed a 15 year professional career that included stops with five teams in Major League Soccer and three MLS Cup titles. He took the reins as head coach of the Stars in 2010, helping the Stars become the only new club in the 12-team USSF D2 Pro League to reach the playoffs following a seventh place finish. He was named the FieldTurf NASL Coach of the Year in 2011 after guiding the Stars to the NASL crown.

Since moving to Minnesota from Newcastle-uponTyne, England, 18 years ago, Craig has become a widely known and respected figure at all levels of the Minnesota soccer community. Craig has served as the head coach of the PDL’s Twin Cities Phoenix and the NPSL’s Minnesota Blast as well as leading Shattuck St. Mary’s school and various clubs around the Twin Cities. In addition to his role with the Stars, which he has held since March 2010, Craig is also director of coaching for White Bear Soccer Club.

The 2012 NASL season marks Friedland’s ninth professional season in Minnesota. He signed for the Stars in 2010 as a player-coach and in 2011 added front office duties including business development and designing the Stars home and away kits. Friedland began his career with the Kansas City Wizards in 2003 but signed for the Minnesota Thunder in 2004 after impressing then head coach Amos Magee. His nine years in Minnesota make him the market’s longest-tenured active professional player.

The newest addition to the Stars coaching staff, Lowery is a former college standout who enjoyed a four year professional career in the A-League, MLS and USL before retiring to embark on a coaching career. Lowery began as an assistant at UMass, then joined his alma mater, Ohio State, before moving to an assistant coach’s role at Wake Forest, where he helped lead the Demon Deacons to the 2007 NCAA championship. He is currently the head coach at Minneapolis’ St. Thomas University.
