FLUKE 805 VIBRATION METER THE NEW Fluke 805 Vibration Meter is the easy, rugged and repeatable way to check vibration. It’s what vibration pens want to be when they grow up! The Fluke 805 offers users a meter – not a pen – that measures overall vibration as well as specific variables, like bearing condition and temperature, to provide a more complete picture. The meter has a combination vibration and force sensor tip that compensates for user variance (force or angle) yielding accurate, repeatable readings.

A RECENT report shows expenditure on energy as a percentage of turnover increased by 10% between 2008 and 2011 as pressures mount from the carbon tax and rising electricity bills. The Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) study, “Energy Shock: pressure mounts for efficiency action”, also showed two-thirds of the 300 businesses surveyed improved their energy efficiency in the three years to 2012. This figure is markedly higher than the results of a similar study of the five years to 2010, which found that only one-third of businesses had made headway in improving the energy efficiency of their operations. The report follows findings from another study released earlier this month – the Ai Group Survey of Carbon Tax Cost Burden – showing 40% of manufacturers plan to increase at least some of their selling prices from 1 July 2012 as a result of the start of the carbon tax. Ai Group chief executive Innes Willox said the most recent study shows “a major rise in action to boost energy efficiency, but also

Network costs and carbon pricing were the two largest contributors to electricity price rises.

identified barriers to further and deeper action.” The “Energy Shock” study found that retail electricity prices for small users will have risen 37% between 2010 and 2013, with the two biggest factors being network costs, which added 15 percentage points, and carbon pricing, which contributed about 8 percentage points. Willox said the impacts will be compounded by the challenging conditions facing non-resource businesses. “Most respondents described energy costs as a major expense. This appears to have been a catalyst for action by businesses to improve their energy efficiency, although most businesses will need to do more to blunt the impacts of rising energy prices,” he added.

Ford lays off 440 workers as Falcon sales plummet

Ford will shed 440 jobs from its Geelong and Broadmeadows plants.

FORD Australia will terminate 440 manufacturing jobs by the end of the year, due to reduced demand for the locally-built Falcon. The news comes only months after Ford accepted $103 million in government and parent-company funding, designated to future-proof the Geelong and Broadmeadows engine and assembly plants.

The funding, which was allocated for the manufacture of more fuel-efficient Territory SUVs and Falcons (the latter of which began rolling off the production lines in May), was tipped to ‘safeguard’ production at Ford until at least 2016, creating an extra 300 jobs. Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu said Ford will offer the 403 Geelong

and 1,068 Broadmeadows workers voluntary redundancies. An equal number of jobs will be terminated from both plants. Ford said its decision comes as a result of reduced demand for its Falcon and Territory SUV vehicles. The car-maker has indicated that it needs to reduce production levels to match current consumer demand.

New mindset needed to move past resources boom THE RESOURCES sector has brought billions of dollars into the Australian economy, mainly due to the mining boom; but, economic experts caution, the country can’t rest on its laurels. Treasury Secretary Dr Ken Henry says measures like structural adjustments and productivity reforms are not enough. “It is no exaggeration to say that if Australia is going to navigate successfully the … extraordinary growth of China and others in

4

AUGUST 2012 – MYFEN.COM.AU

the region, a new mindset will be required, in government certainly, business and the broader community also,” Dr Henry said. One of his recommendations is to make transportation and logistics more efficient in order to shift the focus away from expansion of activity in the resources sector, which he says is “crowding out” competitiveness in other sectors due to factors like wage increases and exchange rates.

Australia can’t rest on mining dollars alone, economic advisers warn.

New loop calibrator with HART technology

The loop calibrator supports Universal and Common Practice commands.

ZEDFLO has released a new calibration product designed to bring flexibility to end-users. The Beta-Martel model LC-110H is a loop calibrator that includes true HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) communications technology. It supports Universal and Common Practice commands that let the user read, display and store the full

configuration data of any HART device. The commands also allow the users to adjust the Upper Range Value (URV) and Lower Range Value (LRV) of any HART device. In addition, the operator can perform full analogue output trim and ‘instrument zero’ functions. By using the optional BetaLOG HART software, the previously stored configuration data can be

uploaded as well as up to 9800 data points from any device equipped with the communications technology, including the 4PV valves. Alternatively, the LC-110 model is available without HART technology for those who just need a competent loop calibrator. Zedflo Australia 08 9302 1266 www.zedflo.com.au

configurations. According to the company, the LMR Low-Loss Flexible 50 Ohm Coax Feeder cables, on which the end caps can be fitted, are bundled under a common outer jacket for multiple run applications. Such applications include smart antenna feeders, as well as IF and RF runs to tower-mounted amplifiers for cellular, point-to-point, broadband wireless, microwave backhaul, WiMax or LTE systems. The manufacturer of the end caps, Times Microwave Systems, has more than 50 years experience in designing coaxial cables, connectors and assemblies for demanding interconnection problems. Rojone, a specialist in the GPS, antenna, radio-frequency and microwave industries, is the Australian distributor of the end caps. Rojone 02 9829 1555 www.rojone.com.au

AIR & Hydraulic Systems has unvieled the new J+J digital positioning system (DPS), which features a modulating function whereby the movement of the actuator is controlled by either a 4-20mA or a 0-10VDC control signal. Any change in the control input signal results in a corresponding and proportional change in the position of the actuator, which is achieved with the use of an internal digital positioning system. The DPS can be supplied as a retro-fit kit containing all the parts required to convert a standard on-off actuator to a modulating unit. An internal microprocessor on the DPS circuit board monitors the analogue input and output signals digitally and compares them to the physical position. Digital control ensures high sensitivity, with all the usual positioning characteristics coming in at under 1% (hysteresis, linearity and precision). When the actuator is used in manual mode and put back into automatic mode with the actuator out of its normal operating quadrant, the DPS will auto-adjust itself back into the correct quadrant and re-set itself, ready for use. Lubrication system to extend chain life

The porting system of the lubrication system meters lubricant through precision ejectors.

INTERLUBE has developed the Rotalube system designed to extend chain life and reduce maintenance costs. Suitable for applications such as in car manufacturing plants, among others, the system provides a precise method of lubricating chain. By delivering the right amount of lubricant to the exact point of the chain the lubricant can penetrate into the bearing areas. The lubrication system has a porting system that meters lubricant through precision ejectors incorporated within the sprocket assembly.

Dew point sensor BESTECH Australia has released the Almemo FHA646DCT1 dew point sensor. It provides early warning of moisture in compressed air systems and lines. Able to detect moisture levels which could potentially damage equipment, the sensor is suitable for use with everything from static air-dryers to large refrigerant type dryers. The transmitter can be used in the production of moisture sensitive products, such as food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and automotive components. In such instances, the dew point sensor can either trigger an alarm or automatically shut down ‘suspect’ compressed air sources before damage occurs. The standard sensor is suitable for compressed air systems with pressures up to 50 bar. A 350 bar rating option is also available. When connected to one of the MA instrument series, the signals for dew point, temperature and relative humidity may be displayed. Dependant on the model of MA instrument chosen, the data may also be logged and output alarm signals can be set. If the MT8716DTC1 option is chosen, the instrument becomes a 4 to 20 mA dew point temperature transmitter (-80 to +20°C). Bestech Australia 1300 209 261 www.bestech.com.au

The interaction from the chain rotates the sprocket applicator and when the ports align within the sprocket body the pressure within the system overcomes the back pressure of the ejector nozzles. This results in lubricant delivered onto the link plates of the chain precisely. From then on the science of capillary action takes over and results in a lubricated chain. High-pressure magnetic filters ECLIPSE Magnetics has developed the Micromag HP50 and HP80 magnetic filters, which share the features of the standard Micromag magnetic filter but have been developed to suit high pressure throughspindle-coolant applications. In these applications the smallest of particles can damage seals, spindles and even reduce the efficiency of the cutting tool. The filter consists of an aluminium lid and housing, stainless steel magnet tube. The HP50 can be installed anywhere in the fluid delivery system and will ensure that even sub-micron magnetic and para-magnetic particles are removed before they can cause any expensive damage. According to the company, when staff use the supplied cleaning tool, a fully contaminated core can be cleaned in under 30 seconds. Only metallic particles are removed from the filter and these can be easily disposed of. No dirty cartridges are involved. The filters are intended for use on neat and soluble oils. They can be installed preor post-pump, delivery line, spindle feed or pre-membrane cartridge. Spear & Jackson (Australia)

Centrifugal compressors with high-volume output

The vertically-split design provides fast access to major components of the compressor.

COMPRESSED Air and Power Solutions (CAPS) Australia has developed its latest model of Centac centrifugal compressors, the C1000. These compressors are oil-free, single to multi-stage compressors, which provide high-quality, clean compressed air to Class 0 certification. The latest design

comprises the main compressor unit and at least three coolers, all mounted on a cast-iron frame. The three coolers – two interstage and one after-cooler – have been oversized to provide greater resistance to fouling. They also provide low CTD and pressure drop to increase efficiency and reliability. The water-in-tube coolers are

accessible and serviceable from both ends of the package. The compressors can supply the high volumes of compressed air required for applications such as smelting, mining, food production or chemical processing. CAPS Australia (08) 6250 9800 www.capsaust.com.au

New range of oil-free compressors BOGE has introduced the Bluekat range of compressors for the production of oil-free compressed air. The new screw compressors with their integrated converter are suitable for applications in which oil-free compressed air is indispensable, such as in the pharmaceutical, chemical, semiconductor, food and medical industries. The compressors are based on the company’s S series screw compressors – with traditional oil injection. In this case a converter is integrated directly after the compression stage serving to

oxidise the oil contained in the compressed air into carbon dioxide and water. The purified air has a residual oil content of less than 0.01mg/m3 and is thus considered to be absolutely oil-free compressed air. The result is achieved independently of the quality of the intake air; the converter also serves to reliably transform oil-loaded intake air into oil-free air. Boge Compressors (Australia) 03 5940 3266 www.boge.net.au

The compressor provides purified air with a residual oil content of less than 0.01mg/m3.

Switchboxes suitable for use with Pneumatic screw pump linear pneumatic actuators GEMÜ has released the new 4242 combi switchbox, designed for safe and high-speed applications with small to medium nominal sizes and strokes ranging from 2 to 30 mm. The swtichbox uses a microprocessor-controlled, intelligent position sensor and an analogue travel sensor system. The travel sensor, switching valves and status LEDs are all integrated in a solid, compact housing with a transparent cover. The combi switchbox offers detailed diagnostics and also indicates the valve position and valve status via a high visibility optical position indicator. Assembly and commissioning are simplified by a speed-AP function. According to the manufactuers, the switchbox is be well-suited for use with pneumatically operated linear actuators. The switchboxes can be used with pneumatically operated linear actuators.

MEYER has developed a pneumatic screw pump, designed to replace rotary airlock feeders that have prematurely failed when handling fine abrasive materials. The pump utilises the material to be conveyed to form a seal during operation. An integral flap gate prevents blowback when introducing material into the system on start-up or when running empty. The hard coated screw design provides a continuous flow of material into the conveying air stream, this low-profile, dust-free

New components for light crane system

A new slewing motion limiter (pictured) and cable slider is available for the company’s light crane system.

DEMAG Cranes has extended its KBK light crane system to include two new components. Adjustable limitation of the slewing motion is available for wall-mounted slewing job cranes in order to protect workers, while at the same time, protecting material, such as neighbouring machinery. In addition, a new

cable slider is now available to accommodate flat cables. This flexible feature allows the slewing range of wall-mounted slewing jib cranes to be adapted to the given operating environments up to a radius of 270 degrees at any time. The pre-completed sub-assembly consists of a carrier plate, mounting bracket, perforated plate and buffer

bracket. The perforated plate used in connection with buffer brackets enables the slewing angle to be precisely adjusted in increments of 1.5 degrees. Simple adjustment is possible whenever needed if operating requirements change. Demag Cranes and Components 1300 DEMAG1 (1300 336 241) www.demag.com.au

Ventilated stacking table for stable pallet packing BEUMER Group has developed a ventilated and specially coated layer stacking table to add to its paletpac. The stacking table is designed to palletise bags in a careful and dimensionally stable manner. The table is made of smooth polished metal, which allows the bags to glide of its surface. If this polished stainless steel surface is insufficient to ensure secure handling, then compressed air flows through small AD_ F ENADAJ UN_ 1 2 . p d f Pa ge 1 apertures in the layer stacking table.

This allows the bags to “hover” on an air cushion and greatly reduces the friction between the bag and the layer stacking table, so that the bags do not stick to the contact surface. The bags can therefore be moved and positioned rapidly and in a dimensionally stable manner, resulting in geometrically precise stacks. Beumer Group

Input/Output modules with new hardware and P2P communications ROCKWELL Automation has introduced new high-speed Input/Output (I/O) modules for its ControlLogix programmable automation controller (PAC) platform to enable faster machine speeds in a range of discrete applications. The Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 24vdc I/O modules, used with the 5570 family of PACs in the same range, are engineered to improve total System Response Time (SRT) through new hardware technology and peer-topeer communication capabilities that reduce the time it takes for modules to communicate with the controller. SRT equates to the time required for input module response, controller processing and output module response. Therefore, reducing I/O latency results in higher machine speeds for increased parts production. For even faster performance, the new modules also function in peer-to-peer

The I/O modules are designed to improve system response time for sequential control applications.

mode, bypassing the controller by establishing in-chassis connections that allow I/O modules to communicate directly with each other. Shifting task management to the I/O modules can relieve a controller of the overhead required to process and direct I/O modules, helping improve reliability in program execution and throughput. The large visor (100x170mm) gives the welder a vertical and lateral field of view with continuous respiratory protection when not welding, something that is not possible with non flip-up welding helmets with respiratory protection. According to the distributors, the Adflo Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) or the new V-500E Supplied Air Regulator (SAR) integrates with the new welding helmet to provide respiratory protection compliant with Australian and New Zealand standards. For hearing protection, the company’s Peltor earmuffs can be clipped onto the helmet.

STAINELEC Hydraulic Equipment has introduced the Edilgrappa Silvercut 20 high-tensile rebar cutters with a maximum cutting capacity of 20mm. The newly designed cutting head allows the operator easier access in awkward locations were rebars need to be cut on site. The company claims the new cutting head is the smallest in size compared to competitors, due to the Drop Forged head assembly, designed and engineered by Edilgrappa. Featuring a powerful double insulated 230V 1100W motor to drive the precision designed radial hydraulic pump, the rebar cutter’s weight is 10kg. It produces 14 tonnes of force with a cutting speed of 3 seconds. The rebar cutters are suitable for use on building sites and factory operations.

The helmet provides protection for the welder’s head, eyes, face, hearing and respiratory system.
