Wreaths Across America

Wreaths Across America ceremony took place on December 14 at Jacksonville Veterans Cemetery. At many homes, there is an empty seat for one who is serving, or one who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. The event honors our veterans in this way as there is no better time to express our appreciation, than during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Escort to History - Part Three By Rita Cox, Editor, Press-News Journal Part Three of Escort to History, an eyewitness account of a Lewis County, Mo., man who participated in John F. Kennedy’s funeral in 1963.

Richard Pace of Canton, Mo., rode the lead horse of the caisson carrying John F. Kennedy’s casket. He says he has been asked over the years how he felt that day. Pace said” Hell we didn’t feel anythingwe were soldiers.” Pace was a member of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment, stationed with the Old Guard in Ft. Myers, Virginia. The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) is the official Escort to the President of the United States and the nation’s Premier Memorial Affairs and Ceremonial Unit. Old Guard Soldiers are in Arlington National Cemetery daily rendering final honors to our fallen, both past and present. The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) is the oldest active Infantry Regiment in the U.S. Army. Pace said when he participated in

Kennedy’s funeral he had already performed the same duty for over 600 veterans that were buried in Arlington Cemetery. Arlington National Cemetery is directly across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. It was established during the Civil War on the grounds of Arlington House, the home of Confederate general Robert. E. Lee. Lee’s wife, Mary (Custis) was a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. George Washington Parke Custis, grandson of Martha Washington, acquired the land that now is Arlington National Cemetery in 1802, and began construction of Arlington House. The estate passed to Custis’ daughter, who had married United States Army officer, Robert E. Lee. Custis’ will gave a “life inheritance” to Mary Lee, allowing her to live at and run Arlington Estate for the rest of her life but could not sell any portion of it. Upon her death, the Arlington estate passed to her eldest son, George Washington Custis Lee. Robert E. Lee resigned from the United States Army and became the commander of the Army

of Northern Virginia. Confederate forces occupied Arlington, with its high ground overlooking Washington, D.C. With the fear of Arlington becoming overrun by federal forces. Mary Lee buried many of her family treasures on the grounds and left. The estate became occupied by the northern army. The grounds became a cemetery in 1864. According to the cemetery’s website, Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 400,000 active duty service members, veterans and their families. Service to country is the common thread that binds all who are remembered and honored here. Arlington is both a national treasure and an active cemetery. The cemetery conducts between 27 and 30 funerals each week day and between six and eight services on Saturdays – nearly 7,000 services per year. The cemetery also hosts more than 3,000 ceremonies per year, including wreath-laying ceremonies for national and international dignitaries; memorial Continued on Page 8A

CLARENCE CHRONICLES This week we include Clarence Chronicles from Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 due to a mix up in publication. Sorry Patty! we enjoy your articles!

Wednesday, Dec. 4th 2013 I do hope each and every one of you had a great Thanksgiving. I had such a wonderful week last week. I spent Wednesday all day getting everything ready for the big day. That day guests were Raymond and Jessica Wood, Norma and Bella. We had a nice afternoon visiting with them. That night my daughter Amanda came in from St. Louis. We had a great evening visiting and catching up on everything. Thursday morning I did like so many of you did, I got up at 6 to put the turkey in the oven. We had all the trimmings and had lots of the family here. Those here to visit Kenny, our Grandson Derek Wood and myself were Amanda, Steve and Chanel Bachesta of St. Louis, Laura, Kaylee, Katherine, and Mitch Christen all of Callao. Krystal, Justin, Cole, Allie and Blake Williams of Macon. We all had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration and Steve read a copy or the original Proclamation prayed by Governor William Bradford on the first Thanksgiving. The whole reason for Thanksgiving was to thank God for the abundant harvest and all the food He provided. Thursday night Amanda

Patty Truitt

stayed and after everyone left we spent some time visiting, watching a movie and just relaxing after the long day of cooking and visiting. Friday I worked but Friday night Amanda, Laura, Kaylee, Katherine, Mitch and I had supper at A. J.s in Macon. After a great meal Amanda, Kaylee, Katherine and I went to see the movie Catching Fire. If you haven’t seen it you are missing a great movie. Sunday morning I went to Sunday School then Kenny and I went to Atlanta for a lovely dinner at the home of our daughter and son-in-law’s Bonnie and John McMurry We had a great afternoon visiting with them. They had spent Thanksgiving with John’s family in Iowa. On our way home we stopped at Walmart in Macon and saw our good friends Carolyn Hill and Helen Sinkler. They were in Macon shopping. I must ask “What is going on in the country. Here we are at the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year. The birth of the Baby Jesus. The beginning of a time of hope and love. At this time why are people in stores fighting over Black Friday specials. One woman in Chicago even stabbed three people to get an X Box for her son. She is said to have told police that she may go to jail but her son has an X Box. How did we come to this way of thinking. We must spend

Macon County Historical Society Annual Christmas Gathering

Great attendance on December 12th at the Macon County Historical Society annual Christmas dinner and meeting. There was great food from Noland’s Catering, asurprise visit from Anna Jeager (aka Merlyn Amidei). MCHS would like to thank everyone for all of there donations this year, whether it was historical items, labor or donations. and are looking forward to 2014.

this Christmas time praying for our country and a return to loving one another. Hope all of you have a great week and be kind when you shop. December 11 Just think about this. In two weeks Christmas will be over. Where is the time going? I don’t know about all of you but I have something written on every day this month. Not one free day and that does not include things like sending cards and all those good things. Last week Kenny and I went to Moberly shopping. Got some great jewelry at the Goodwill there. If you haven’t checked out Goodwill do so. It is a great store. We went several places and then went to Walmart. I got in line and was number 8. They only had 3 lanes open and the store was packed. The

man in front of me said “If Sam Walton was alive he would fire some managers.” Despite waiting in line so long we had a great day. Thursday we put up the last tree in the family room. It is a large 7-foot tree and has all the special ornaments on it from our childcare’s childhood. We talk about every ornament as we put it on the tree. It is my favorite tree. We have 9 up but this is the favorite. The presents go under this tree. Saturday the 7th the members of our community gathered at the city park for “The Lighting of Clarence.” It was too cold for me to go but Granddaughters Norma and Bella Wood got their parents, Raymond and Jessica, to go to the park. The girls got to hang an ornament on the tree, they had cookies and hot chocolate, and most important they got to talk to Santa. There were several families went and everyone had a great time despite the cold.

Sunday we went to Sunday School and Church and it is so very beautiful all decorated for Christmas. I so love this time of year. We never out grow Christmas. Tuesday after work I went to Macon Walmart to get some Gift Cards to send to family in Oklahoma. I picked 6 cards and waited in line ten minutes to get them taken care of. The first time she did the cards wrong and I had to go get 6 more and she redid them. In all I was more then 30 minutes getting 6 cards. The checkout lines were very long and only 3 lanes were open. This is not the fault of the employees who are always very nice. I have been busy today getting ready for a little get together I am having for some friends from work tomorrow night. I hope all goes well. Have a great week and in all your Christmas rushing remember the reason for the season is Baby Jesus. Pray all of you have a great week. Patty

THE SHEPHERD CALLS Dr. H. Wade Paris ATLANTA NEWS Christmas Behind the Scenes Some shepherds were just doing their thing—watching the sheep—when an angel interrupted to tell them Christmas had arrived, “The Savior is born. Christ has arrived in the world.” The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to check it out. The historian Luke tells us the shepherds were watching their flocks “by night”, presumably to protect them from wild animals, thieves, or simply keep them from wandering off, as sheep are prone to do. If the shepherds wanted to protect the sheep from harm, I must assume some shepherds were left in the field to “watch” while others went to Bethlehem to “see” what the angel had announced. Presuming that scenario is correct, I tip my hat to those who stayed behind to watch so others could “go and see”. Christian success stories usually contain heroes behind the scenes. Moses led the Hebrews out of Egyptian bondage, but he owed his life to his mother Jochebed and sister Miriam who daringly hid baby Moses in the Nile to keep him alive. Naaman, the Syrian General, was cured of leprosy by washing in the Jordan River; however, it was a young slave girl who convinced him to listen to the prophet Elisha. David was the great King of the Hebrews, but his friend Jonathan kept him alive. In my lifetime, I have attended many church dinners and celebrations. I am always impressed with the people who serve in

the kitchen. Often they cook the food, serve the tables, and then clean up the kitchen. In our church, we usually ask the kitchen crew to come out and “take a bow” as we applaud their work. I have mentioned these behind the scenes stories so I can ask, “Can you be a behind the scenes person?” Occasionally, someone will say, “I did all that work, i.e. made sacrifices; and no one thanked me”. Really? If the work is done, isn’t that thanks? On a football team, not everyone carries the ball. Some team members play their entire career and never touch the ball during a game; but when a touchdown is made, they feel thanked. It will soon be Christmas. Search for a behind the scenes blessing you can give—one no one knows about. Be one of the shepherds who stayed in the field so others could “go and see”. It will bless your life.

Students at Miss Erica’s Preschool in rural Atlanta visited the Maples Repertory Theater in Macon on Wednesday, December 4, 2013. The group included Bella Baker, Josie Ebeling, Brody Baker, Dustin Magers and Jay Reuterdahl. They attended a children’s theater show entitled “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Joseph McDonough. The play was based on a story by Mark Twain. The students attend an in-home preschool with teacher, Erica Baker. They use curriculum and games to learn in preparation of Kindergarten.

HEARTLAND HEADLINES Basketball has kept our little community pretty busy the last couple of weeks. On Saturday, I took in two of the three games against Jefferson City here at Heartland. Then I drove to Knox County to catch a few minutes of an elementary tournament. I admit to having an ulterior motive for that trip. One of our grandsons was playing on a Kirksville team in the tournament.

Our goal here at Heartland is to help people get a fresh start and succeed in life. Basketball may not be an obvious tool in that effort, but it certainly works. On Saturday morning, the girls’ game went into overtime, and three of our starters fouled out. It is a small team, so the last several minutes we played with only three girls on the court. And none of them have ever played ball be-

Saturday 11:00 AM December 14, 2013 across the United States, Christmas wreath laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, veterans’ cemeteries, and other locations in all 50 states and beyond were observed. The American Legion Green Hills Post 57 was the selected as honor guard for the wreath laying ceremony at the Jacksonville Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery. The Bucklin Legionnaires fired a three round rifle volley after completion of the Christmas wreath memorial services, followed by taps being played by Callao Post 360 bugler Mike Miller.

The MHDC commission gave approval of the statewide competitive grants at its annual awards meeting held on Dec. 6 in Columbia. In a competitive field of more than 165 statewide applicants, NECAC was one of 45 agencies to be awarded 2014 funding. NECAC was awarded $209,795 in MHDC HERO home rehabilitation program funding and $138,000 in MHDC Housing Trust Fund dollars to provide major renovations at home in nine Northeast Missouri counties. The agency also was awarded $85,165 in MHDC Trust Fund dollars for emergency assistance programs. “We are thankful to the MHDC commission for awarding NECAC these grant awards totaling $432,960 from the many statewide applications it had to consider,” Patrick said. “Anytime we have an opportunity to improve the area’s housing stock and provide emergency assistance to our neighbors in need, we welcome it. We know how competitive the process was, and we’re glad to see these dollars coming back to our NECAC region of Northeast Missouri.” Income-qualifying homeowners in Lewis, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Ralls, Randolph and Shelby counties are eligible to apply for repairs. The funding will provide roof, siding, electrical and plumbing replacements, and disabled accessibility projects. The improvements must meet local building codes.

The emergency assistance program dollars will be used for programs that will to help clients facing an immediate crisis in the nine-county area. More than 3 million people visit Arlington each year. Richard Pace said while in the Old Guard, his caisson would have up to six funerals a day, each taking about an hour in length. He participated in around 1300 funerals during his time in the Old Guard. Besides funeral duties, they would also have ceremonial duties to perform as well as happy celebrations. Sometimes the horses were used in wedding ceremonies, usually for officers. Pace liked to drive the horses and buggies for those events, they would usually receive a tip from the happy couple. Kennedy’s grave was at first just marked off with

poles and ropes. Pace said a few days after the President was buried, the team was completing a funeral for another veteran when as they drove by the President’s fresh grave the wheel of the caisson caught one of the poles and pulled it down. It was quickly repaired. There were many mourners to the gravesite after the funeral and the site continues to attract visitors daily. Pace does not talk about his role in the JFK funeral too much. When asked if his Canton and area friends knew his role in history, Pace said, “It has never come up in conversation.” Richard Pace as a member of the Old Guard was responsible for a number of duties. $500 Respite Grant Funds Available for Caregivers

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia is a full-time responsibility, and respite reimbursement funds provided by the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Missouri Chapter allow those caregivers the opportunity to take a welldeserved break. Earlier this year, the Missouri legislature appropriated funds to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) for the Alzheimer’s Service Project. Following a competitive grant process, DHSS awarded the contract for the caregiver respite reimbursement program to the three Alzheimer’s Association chapters located in Missouri – Heart of America (Kansas City), Greater Missouri (Columbia/Springfield) and St. Louis. Each

chapter will administer the grants within their chapter territories. Funds may be used to hire a substitute in-home care provider to allow the family caregiver personal time away for himself or herself. That time may be spent shopping, playing cards with friends, attending to one’s own healthcare needs, enjoying time alone or whatever best serves the caregiver. Funds may also be used to pay for dementia-specific medications and/or safety products. The five hundred dollar ($500.00) grants are available through April 2014. Families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia are encouraged to call the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Missouri Chapter at 573443-8665 or 800-272-3900 for more information

Tuesday December 10th the La Plata Bulldogs hosted the Wildcats from Bevier. The Bulldogs got off to a fast start holding the Wildcats under ten points on defense in the first quarter and pouring in twelve on the offensive side of the court. Things evened out in the second quarter as both teams settled into their offense. La Plata went to the half leading 27 to 21. The second half saw the Bulldogs go cold from the floor and allowed the Wildcats to gain on their lead. At the end of three it came down to the last quarter all knotted up at 31 to 31. The two teams showed how even the match up was exchanging leads until Bevier was able to pull ahead and win a heartbreaker for the Bulldogs 39 to 41. Mitch Cox led the Bulldogs with 14, followed by Baylon Belt and Ben Bolden 3, Seth Brown 5, Hunter Howe 4 and Ty Davison with 2. The Boys game against BMC was cancelled due to the snow. This week the Bulldogs play at Brasher Tuesday night and host Schuyler County on Saturday the 21st.

LaPlata Lady Bulldogs 52, Bevier 38 “We were led in scoring by Hannah Larson (18 points) and Kelsi Hemmerling (14 points). Ally Gregory added 9 points; Kalie Lene chipped in 6, and Jessica Davison and Morgan Kimmel scored 3 and 2 respectively. Offensively, I thought we did a decent job attacking their zone and crashing the boards for offensive rebounds, but we’re still struggling with too many turnovers and unforced errors. This is not unexpected, however, as our younger players become more accustomed to the speed and physicalness of varsity competition. Defensively, we tried to dictate tempo with some full court pressure at times. I thought we defended well in the half court, but allowed their guards to penetrate more than we like. We will continue to work on things and hope to continue to improve as we grow together. We have a busy week before break with BucklinMacon Co (make up game) on Monday the 16th at our place. Then we travel to Brashear on Tuesday the 17th and end first semester play with a home game vs. Schuyler Co on Saturday the 21st.” Coach Steve Lightle

The Brashear Tigers went to Linn County for a conference game Tuesday night against the Mustangs. The Tigers came out as cold as the winter air outside and let the Mustangs build a big first quarter lead 2 to 22. The Tigers could have easily given up but they showed heart and made a game out of it. They only were outscored by 2 in the second quarter. The Mustangs put on another run at the start of the second half and held off the Tigers for a 26 to 59 victory for Linn County. The Tigers had a balanced attack led by 7 from Patrick Jochimsen and 6 from Luke Morrow and Jacob Reeves. Chance Hill, Colt Acton and Devin Morrison put in 2 each, Jacob Bleything added 1. The other game for the week against Green City was cancelled due to the snow. The Boys play host to La Plata Tuesday Night and then travel to Atlanta Thursday and Marion County on Friday.

The Brashear Lady Tigers took on the Linn County Mustangs in Purdin on Tuesday Night December 10th. The Girls came out battling in the first quarter holding the Mustangs to under ten points but were just as cold and trailed by one 8 to 9. The Lady Tigers stayed cold into the second but continued the solid defense and trailed at the half 10 to 18. Brashear’s offense clicked in the third with the girls outscoring Linn County and cutting into the Mustangs lead. The Tigers saw the Mustangs go on a short run in the final quarter that they were unable to overcome and lost the game 28 to 42. Mandy Taylor led the team with 7 points; Abby Hall had 6, followed by 4 apiece from Skylar Housman and Meredith Thomas. Robbyn Wagster put in 3 for the Tigers and Ashley Moncief and Allison Thompson each chipped in 2. The game Friday night against Green City was cancelled due to the storm. Escort to History - Part Three Continued from Page 6A ly for the duty of the solemn dignity which the riders and horses lend to the ceremony of carrying a comrade for his last ride to Arlington Cemetery. The caissons used were built in 1918 and used for 75 mm cannons. They were originally equipped with ammunition chests, spare wheels, and tools used for the cannons. For the funeral services they have been replaced with the flat deck on which the casket rests. According to the Old Guard website, Black Jack, the black riderless horse used in the Kennedy funeral was the last of the Quartermaster issue horses branded with the Army’s brand and his Army serial number 2V56. Black Jack took part in JFK’s funeral and also in the funerals of Herbert Hoover, Lyndon B. Johnson and Gen. Douglas MacArthur and also in thousands of others in Arlington Cemetery during his 24 years of service with the Old Guard. Black Jack ended his service to the US on Feb. 6, 1976 and is buried on the parade ground of Fort Myer’s Summerall Field. Pace recalls his time spent at Fort Myer. He said if you stay around horses long enough, something strange will happen. One of the horses at Ft. Myer was Slow Motion. They would put the horses out on pickets while cleaning their stalls. Slow Motion was used for many ceremonies. They used steel cables with a neck rope to picket the horses. Slow Motion was always head shy and while out on picket he was spooked by tourists and hung himself. A Lipizzaner stallion named Congrasonyabaya

was a five year old stud horse which was a gift to the US government by a foreign country in appreciation for the aid they had received during World War II. The Old Guard was at the Jefferson Memorial for a night ceremony of some type when while loading, the horse got away and ended up jumping off a wall into the tidal basin. The horse couldn’t be found and was feared lost. The horse spent a lot of time in the water. Chief Warrant officer John McKinney. McKinney jumped in the water. The horse was found and had an injury to his stifle joint, where he had a wound. Pace said McKinney was about to lose it, so upset.. and thought his military career was soon to be overThe Park Service brought in a tank retriever with a boom and had to pick the horse up out of the water. McKinney was a valuable member of the Old Guard, the Army didn’t want him to retire. He died of a heart attack and is buried close to Kennedy’s gravesite at Arlington. After ending his duties with the Old Guard, Pace was out of the Army for only 83 days when he signed back up. He went to Vietnam in December of 1965. The request for volunteers went out and ace volunteered to go to a helicopter unit where he was assigned to the Airborne 173rd and was a tail gunner on a Huey and run combat support missions He was also assigned to the 113th Aviation Company, the Thunderbirds, Their helicopters had a big eagle painted on their helicopters.Pace said the helicopters in Vietnam were all over worked. At times there were aircraft on the

tarmac that couldn’t fly just for the lack of a quart of oil. The guys would trade the Air Force for oil. While in Vietnam the only time there wasn’t aircraft in the air was on Thanksgiving Day 1966. He received wounds while the helicopter he was in received enemy fire. He said the troops were isolated over there, no TV, only radio and the Stars and Stripes paper, which was censored with information. He remembers mostly hot beer, there was any kind of beer you wanted, but it was usually always hot.He was sent back to the states fro N.C.O. Academy Pace was stationed in Ft. Riley, Kansas, from 1968 to 1971. He received orders to go back to Vietnam, where he was with the 5th MIC. He said it was one of the worst outfits he was associated with due to a battalion commander. His convoy would be sent out and then ordered to take the same route day after day. He said they were sitting ducks to anyone watching and were hit with an anti tank mine, which picked his vehicle up, ripped the machine gun off, but Pace was still holding his handset after in incident. He received concussion wounds. He said everything in his body hurt. Pace has many other interesting tales of his military service and his time spent in Vietnam. Pace received many awards and honors during his service in the military, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and many others. One of Pace’s medals that he is the most proud of his the Rifle EIB, Expert Infantry Badge. He was the only one who was not an officer that qualified

She was familiar with the area and has family close by. They enjoy many activities including gardening and working around the home. It has been written that Jacqueline Kennedy wanted her husband’s funeral to be perfect, an historical

event and a tribute to the late President. At the time, she didn’t know of the character of the man who would carry her husband to his final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery, but 50 years later, he is a respected military man and a community member who considers it an honor to have served the late President and all the veterans whose last services were performed with dignity and respect.

and endured several days of testing that included day and night time navigation,, weapons assembly and disassembly, first, aid,, etc. The testing was very intense and they had very little sleep over the course of the test. Pace said he wasn’t always the best soldier, but when times were rough he “soldiered” his way through. He was promoted many times in his long military career, but he jokingly says with each promotion came
