Let’s get this out of the way: this is not the Frank Sidebottom story.

Taut, playful and very seductive, this latest Patricia Highsmith adaptation has echoes of Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley with its well-heeled American tourists falling prey to greed and desire under the Mediterranean sun of 1960s Greece.

Woody Allen plays a pimp and John Turturro his gigolo employee. Yes, you might want to read that sentence again. Accept the brilliantly absurd premise and you’re in for a hilarious ride.

Asghar Farhadi’s follow up to the international hit A Separation is another dramatically rich, layered and engrossing film about the ties that bind.

A lean, emotionally powerful existential one-hander shot in only eight days almost entirely inside a car, this seemingly simple film is anything but.

‘All you need for a movie is a girl and a…camel?’

Ahmed (Ali Mosaffa) arrives in suburban Paris from Tehran to finalise his divorce from Marie (Bérénice Bejo). During his brief stay, Ahmad discovers the conflicting nature of Marie’s relationship with her daughter Lucie. Ahmad’s efforts to improve this relationship soon unveil a secret from their past.

On the eve of pouring the foundations for Europe’s largest construction site, Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy), happily married and professionally at the top of his game, feels compelled to do the decent thing. Deserting both family and job, Ivan drives through the night to be present at the birth of his child, a result of his only ever one-night stand.

Acclaimed director Lenny Abrahamson follows up What Richard Did with an offbeat comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Michael Fassbender), a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head, and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Based on the memoir by Jon Ronson, Frank is a fictional story loosely inspired by Frank Sidebottom, the persona of cult musician and comedy legend Chris Sievey, as well as other outsider musicians like Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart. Don’t miss the special Q&A screening with director Lenny Abrahamson on Sat 17 May at 6pm.

A wealthy handsome couple, Chester (Viggo Mortenson) and Colette (Kirsten Dunst), are approached by grifter Rydal (Oscar Isaac) who offers to act as a guide while quietly fleecing them at every opportunity. But Chester is not all that he seems, and soon Rydal finds himself out of his depth and on the run across Greece with his American friends. Themes of avarice, greed, duplicity and homoeroticism unfurl in this potent package orchestrated to controlled perfection by Drive screenwriter Hossein Amini, in his first film as director.

Working from his own screenplay, Turturro sets up the crazy idea in quick, bold strokes, then goes on to explore just what it would mean to be a middle-aged man for hire. His characters are strong and unapologetic, including Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara who turn up as eager clients. But the film’s most surprising and affecting element is the romance that develops between the gigolo and an orthodox Jewish widow (Vanessa Paradis). “Turturro has given Allen his biggest and best on-screen turn in years: the part was written for him and it’s full of scope for aimble kvetching and nimble slapstick.” The Guardian

“ Bérénice Bejo is outstanding in Oscar-winner Asghar Farhadi’s rich study of people trapped in physical and emotional limbo.” The Observer

Anchored by a tremendously compelling performance by Hardy in which we never see a single other face, Locke is emotionally gripping and completely immersive. This is destined to be a low-budget landmark from the writer of Eastern Promises and Dirty Pretty Things.

Based on a true story, Tracks recounts the epic adventure of Robyn Davidson (played by Mia Wasikowska) who in 1977 undertook an extraordinary solo trek of over 2,500km on foot across the harsh Australian outback, accompanied only by her team of camels. A tribute to Davidson’s courage (and sheer doggedness) as well as to the magnificent Australian landscape, Tracks is an enthralling adventure brought to life by a remarkable performance from Wasikowska as the fiercely independent yet emotionally fragile Davidson.

The holiday really is from hell in this disturbing psychological thriller.

Pared to the bone, this brooding thriller is reminiscent of the Coens’ Blood Simple as it follows a mysterious outsider whose quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance.

From Sebastián Silva, the director of Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus (also shown recently at QFT), Magic Magic is a chiller with a difference, centring around the mental disintegration of its lead character Alicia (Juno Temple) and creating an atmosphere of increasing dread and foreboding.

Grieving after the death of his wife and wrestling with the demons of his past, art historian Max Morden (Ciarán Hinds) returns to the sleepy seaside resort where he spent summers as a child, in John Banville’s own adaptation of his Man Booker Prize-winning novel.

The debut feature film from director Phil Harrison tells two parallel stories which intersect in unexpected ways.

A joyous tale of teenage life in early 1980’s Stockholm, as seen through the eyes of a trio of schoolgirl misfits.

Michael (Aidan Gillen) is a young Irishman whose life is looking up on all fronts. He has a family he loves, good friends and a promising career. Sifiso (Thabang Sidloyi), meanwhile, is a bright, sharp teenager living in an informal settlement on the outskirts of Cape Town - although he is hoping for a place at university and a brighter future. When their stories collide, their impact on each other’s lives is far greater than either could have imagined.

13-year-old Bobo and Klara are two best friends who decide the best way to beat bullies and boredom is to form a punk band. With no discernible musical talent between them they enlist the help of classmate, classical guitarist Hedvig. With punk helping them navigate their way through the early teenage minefield of school, boys and embarrassing parents, this is a warm and affectionate coming-of-age tale with the three young leads a delight.

Writer/director Philippe Claudel enjoyed a successful collaboration with Kristin Scott Thomas in I’ve Loved You So Long, and they re-team for this domestic drama, in which a family crisis is overtaken by more sinister elements.

Elegant in its simplicity, The Good Man is a sobering meditation on our globalised reality.

Fans of Lukas Moodysson will revel in the bright and breezy return to the highs of his earlier films such as Together and Show Me Love.

As we follow him with increasing dread, we know things are going to go terribly wrong, but never how exactly it will unfold. Beneath the skin of a revenge thriller beats the heart of a character study in machismo, immaturity, family, selfishness, religion and sadness.

Vacationing on a lushly forested Chilean island with her cousin Sarah and friends, including the bullying Brink (Michael Cera) Alicia soon starts to feel alienated from the group and begins to behave in an increasingly erratic manner, gradually becoming ever more deranged…The group finds themselves in a waking nightmare, trapped with the ever more insane Alicia, far from the safety of home.

Max’s visit triggers a series of memories about the idyllic summer in 1955 when he encountered the Grace family. Carlo (Rufus Sewell) and Connie (Natascha McElhone) were unlike any adults he had met before: nonchalant, bohemian and filled with worldly grace and candour. While Max attempts to deal with the loss of his wife Anna (Sinéad Cusack), he also confronts the disturbing tragedy from that distant summer. The Sea is a story of memory, love, loss, regret, and the persistent possibility of rebirth.

The screening on Fri 2 May will be introduced by director Phil Harrison.

In an accomplished cast of French performers, Scott Thomas plays Lucie, a bored housewife, who believes her affluent surgeon husband Paul (Daniel Auteuil) is having an affair. But the truth is darker and more complicated than that. Before the Winter Chill follows last year’s In the House as another thought-provoking French thriller revelling in darkness and despair.

Joanna Hogg (Unrelated, Archipelago) continues to refine her formal style while exploring the tropes of middle class life in contemporary Britain.

A powerful story of two young girls navigating the oppressive familial and societal expectations of postSoviet Georgia.

This time her concerns lie with a pair of fifty-something artists D and H (Viv Albertine from the Slits and Turner Prize-nominated artist Liam Gillick) taking stock of their lives and deciding to sell their modernist London home in which they have shared the last twenty years.

Tbilisi, 1992: the Soviet era is over and Georgia must fend for itself though civil war is raging. For beautiful Natia and thoughtful Eka, the 14-year-old protagonists, childhood is coming to an end.

Photographer Jane Bown has worked for the Observer for an extraordinary (and unrivalled) 65 years, making unforgettable images of hundreds of subjects – from Jayne Mansfield to the Queen, from John Lennon to Orson Welles.

Immoral gangsters, unscrupulous nouveau riche entrepreneurs, desperate workers: together they provide an explosive mix in this violent four-part mosaic about the very new China. A must see. “ This ultraviolent attack on Chinese consumerism is a stunning slap in the face from previously-sedate director Jia Zhang-ke.” The Guardian

As ever with Hogg, it’s an illuminating portrait of a moneyed class which rarely appears on our screens. At once alienating and moving, Hogg confirms her position as one of the more cerebral filmmakers currently working in British cinema. Exhibition is a delicate, astutely observed and fascinating x-ray of modern life.

Eka is growing up without her father, rebelling against her anxious mother and her irritating older sister, while Natia’s short-tempered, alcoholic father terrorises her entire family. Chaos, insecurity and fear of what the future might bring also hold sway outside the home, at school, on the street and in the bread lines. Based on writer and co-director Nana Ekvtimishvili’s childhood memories, In Bloom is anchored by stunning performances and beautiful imagery of the embattled city.

A Touch of Sin was inspired by four shocking (and true) events that forced the world’s fastest growing economy into a period of self-examination. Using basic equipment and often relying on available light, she has honed a deceptively simple technique to produce her highly distinctive and indeed iconic photographs. This film by Luke Dodd and Michael Whyte respectfully celebrates the great artist by focusing on her personal history, which hitherto she has always kept very private. Mixing interview footage with beautifully presented examples of her work, the directors take us back to her sad and disrupted childhood, explaining – often by subtle implication – how it influenced her innovative approach to portraiture.

Acclaimed director Danis Tanovic won the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival for this unflinching exposé of the prejudices faced by Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Roma minority, starring the real-life couple whose harrowing ordeal became a national scandal. It revisits the alarming saga of Senada Alimanovic and partner Nazif Mujic. Struggling to make ends meet as a scrap-metal forager in the remote Roma community of Poljice, Nazif’s hardscrabble routine becomes a desperate fight for survival when Senada suffers a miscarriage. Without medical insurance or means to pay for a life-saving antisepsis procedure, Senada and Nazif are denied admittance to the local hospital. So begins a hellish ten-day odyssey pitting the couple against social prejudice and a callous bureaucracy, as Nazif scrounges and Senada’s condition grows ever more critical.

Wealthy rancher Bick Benedict (Hudson) and dirt-poor cowboy Jett Rink (Dean) both woo Leslie Lynnton (Taylor), a beautiful young woman from Maryland who is new to Texas. She marries Benedict, but she is shocked by the racial bigotry of the white Texans against the local people of Mexican descent. Nominated for 10 Oscars, Giant remains one of the most beloved works of director George Stevens, who won the Academy Award for the film.

THE 12TH POLI S H FILM FE STI VAL

A MESSAGE FROM DAVID PARK: “Over the years the QFT has given me a great deal of pleasure and I don’t doubt considerable stimulus to my writing imagination, so it is very pleasing to be asked to choose four films as part of The One City One Book programme.

The Poets’ Wives tells the stories of three women born in different times and places. It explores themes such as the connections between art and life, the relationship between artists and the political systems in which they find themselves and of course the joys and tribulations of marriage.

QFT in partnership with the Arts Council is proud to bring you a short season of films as part One City One Book 2014. Curated by Co. Down based author David Park, the films draw on inspirations for his writing and his latest novel, The Poets’ Wives, the focus of this year’s campaign. One City One Book celebrates contemporary writing and Northern Ireland’s rich literary heritage. Partners include: Libraries NI, Belfast City Council, Belfast Telegraph, U105, Clements, Bloomsbury and Translink. DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (1965) Sat 24 May, 2pm

THE LIVES OF OTHERS (Das Leben der Anderen) (2006) Sun 18 May, 3.15pm Introduction by David Park

I AM LOVE (Io sono l'amore) (2009) Sun 25 May, 3pm

I have chosen To Kill a Mockingbird as an example of the power of art to affect how we see the world and Doctor Zhivago’s tangled tale of politics, poetry and passion because the middle section of The Poets’ Wives is set in revolutionary Russia. The Lives of Others is one of my favourite films and depicts the capacity of the individual and the human imagination to survive even the most highly organised repression. And finally we have I Am Love with the wonderful Tilda Swinton trying to break free from the claustrophobic confines of a deeply patriarchal family in search of happiness. I hope you enjoy them.” David Park
