How to find Quarterhouse 22 What’s On

23

Welcome to our spring season at Quarterhouse. You might notice our brochure looks a bit different. We have three exciting festivals coming up: Women of the World to mark International Women’s Day, Election to prepare for the General Election and Normal? to celebrate Mental Health Awareness week. Each festival is co-curated with a Kent-based artist and Folkestone Fringe, and features a mixture of talks, workshops, music, spoken word and theatre. What you see in this brochure is just the beginning. This is intended as a call to you, to help us create the festival you want to see. If you are interested in being involved, make sure you come to a ‘think in’: an open meeting to discuss the themes and content of the festival. If you have ideas, expertise and opinions, and an enthusiasm for sharing these with a diverse audience, please get in touch and get involved. TALKS

RESIDENCIES

Germaine Greer: The Disappearing Woman Friday 13 February, 7pm Tickets £14 / £12 concessions Forty years ago it seemed that women were about to take their rightful place in the world, in parliament, in the church, in the judiciary, in the workplace, but when you open the newspaper you find that news is still made by men in suits. The female most likely to be seen in the sports pages will be a horse. Women are disappearing too because flesh is not allowed. As soon as girls accept the size, role and shape of adult women, they begin to disappear. With each stage of their lives, as they become successively wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, they become less visible. Virtually obliterated are the three-quarters of care home residents who are women. Germaine Greer attempts to explain this state of affairs and to suggest some strategies for change.

Dan Cruickshank: The Recreation of Lost Buildings

Residencies drama, urban music and some of Brixton’s finest MCs and DJs. Come and see emerging local talents have their say: “Listen to our hearts, not the accents of their voice”.

Ever wondered how the work you see on stage gets there? We regularly host artists making new work to enrich our community and future programme. Check the Quarterhouse website for information about workshops and work in progress sharings.

A show about giants and about feeling lost and lonely. A show about home. Fusing together live music, soaring film and spoken word, The Flanagan Collective are testing out some new ideas and would love to share them with you.

The Band will be working on their first show at the Quarterhouse. This is a new work based on Sophocles’ Ajax, the Greek tragedy about the mightiest Greek warrior who inexplicably massacred thousands of sheep & cows overnight. The show plays around the contrast between the heavy emotion & seriousness of the Ancient Greek world and the passivity & security of our modern lives.

Supported by Greenhouse 28 – 31 January Fevered Sleep makes experimental, cross art form projects for both adults and children. The company will be in residence in January to continue research for a new performance. The workshops will bring together two different groups of performers: adult professional male dancers reaching the end of their careers and local girls who dance for fun in their spare time. The project seeks to dispel some of the social taboos and charged politics around the relationships between men and girls.

Crackpot by Susana Howard and directed by Jamie Bradley

Presented by Living Words, originally supported by Westminster Arts and Arts Council England 13 – 17 April, part of Normal? Festival of the Brain Susanna works as a writer with people experiencing dementia. Sometimes people think she’s a crackpot. Then they see the results... Crackpot is a funny, bold, insightful show about a woman’s seven years working in an astonishing way with people experiencing dementia.

Friday 17 April, 7pm Tickets £14 / £12 concessions Dan Cruickshank, respected television presenter, author of many respected books on architecture, and honorary member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, explores what we find irresistable about fine old buildings. Architectural wonders that define a people or place have been lost and recreated. Warsaw old town, parts of Dresden, the palaces of St. Petersburg; the schloss in Berlin. In the UK the Euston arch – completed in 1837 and the first great monument of the railway age and one of the finest pieces of Greek Revival architecture ever built, was demolished in 1961. After years of search most of the stones of the Arch have been recovered from a river bed in East London, and the government has recently decreed that the Arch should be rebuilt.
