SURFING FLORIDA: A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY “Surfing Florida: A Photographic History” comes at a time when surfers throughout the world are beginning to seriously document this vital sport and lifestyle through books, museums and surfing history organizations. While Florida is part of this movement, it is also challenged by its reputation for lackluster surf. Yet, because of the inconsistent surf, surfers from Florida share an insatiable hunger for waves and an aggressive approach to the sport that has resulted in an incredible number of world titles for Florida’s competitive surfers and a deep cultural history. “Surfing Florida” is a massive collaboration with surfers, shapers. photographers, activists, environmentalists, professors, artists, musicians, historians, andorganizations from Florida’s statewide surfing community. This exhibition seeks to preserve the rich history of surfing in Florida, and to raise awareness to the importance of protecting the environment we love; through film screenings, media stations, free lectures, workshops and literature. Friday, March 16 opening remarks by Steve Pezman, co-founder and co-publisher of Surfers Journal and former editor and publisher of Surfer Magazine; and performances by Guy Harvey and Cutback. On Saturday, March 17 Workshops for Surfing History, and SlideShows/Lectures by Darrel Jones, Bruce Walker, Tony Arruza and Mark Long. Presenting Florida’s surfing history through seven regional sections and several workshops and lectures: “Environmentalism and Surfing,” “Spiritual Dimensions in Surfing,” “Surf Music,” “Maritime History,” and “The Sunshine State.” Movies and documentary film screenings to follow through May 12, 2012. This project has been developed by W. Rod Faulds, Director University Galleries, FAU and Paul Aho, a Florida-born surfer, artist and educator who serves as the project curator. THE

BUSINESS

Oi! Oi! Oi! Let the working class rejoice! South London, UK’s The Business is coming to South Florida. What a treat it is to have the British punk band that embraced the gutter punk ethos years before the first smelly dread-headed disenfranchised American suburbanite kid ran away from home. Getting down to brass tacks, with the CD reissue of its seminal 1983 album Suburban Rebels the Business gave a voice to a generation of marginalized British streetpunks who had no other outlet for their frustrations and rebellious nature. Classics such as “Smash the Discos,” “Work or Riot?” and “Loud, Proud ‘N’ Punk” became out-and- out psalms for this subculture. Not surprisingly, later on in its career the Business also found a kind ear with the British Hooligan culture. Absolutely no shock there; through the years the group’s fists-in-the-air Oi! Ois! started transitioning into pint-slinging anthems that greatly appealed to the blue-collar lads. Add in a love for footie—with its biggest hit of recent times being “England 5, Germany 1,” (based on a triumphant World Cup qualifying match in 2001) and the Business gives the Bass Ale-swigging, Three Lions (National English football team nickname,) loving, proletarians reason to smile. The good news for fans making it out to Respectable Street on Friday March 16 is that the Business will be pulling out all the stops and delivering material for fans young and old. Punks or Hooligans. British mates or wannabes. Oi! Oi! ~ Alex Rendon

MILANO

I make artworks that provoke positive thinking, often using humor to tell a story and to share knowledge. My art is very much in the moment and reflects not only the very second it was recorded as in photography, but also captures all the things I am interested in like medicine, music, fashion, surfing, food, comedy. In my photography, the exact instant (that the shutter releases and the image recorded) is so essential and fleeting that I am obsessively searching for the shot. I love the magic that happens in chemical photography and happy accidents of instant photography. This process carries over into my chemical, charcoal, ink and pigment drawings where I use chemicals to develop an image. In my work, I am drawn towards the experimental and narrative and tend to push the boundaries of instant film from creating an image that appears as if it was painted and aged; to using the film to capture highly stylized portraits. I love to capture images of joy, humor, pleasure, pain, eroticism, shyness... the essence of someone. When I photograph on the streets, I am drawn towards abstract subject matter, lines intersecting which create visually stimulating images of oft not noticed subject matter. With my sculpture, I immerse myself totally in the moment and work in a maniacal pace, churning out work until I am finished or exhausted. Oft times you can find me at Kismet Vintage in Delray where I am co-owner. Check out my photos, sculptures, films and drawings at www.liammilano.carbonmade.com

Fort Lauderdale native Dale Nibbe had been kicking around the idea of starting a record label for years. The bravura to do so finally came back in September of 2010 after stumbling upon New Zealand glacial post-ambient duo Glass Vaults’ Bandcamp page. Nibbe thought to himself: “Wow this is fucking brilliant.” He could not believe a band with such a hauntingly lush sound did not have a record out yet. “I was really drawn to them and felt the need to put out a record from them, so I got in touch,” said Nibbe about the initial encounter with the Kiwi ambient band. A month later Nibbe and the Glass Vaults struck a deal, agreed upon putting out some vinyl, and Nibbe’s label, JUKBOXR, was born. The label’s name comes from Nibbe’s music mix blog called Jukeboxer, with a few letters simply dropped. Since then his South Florida-based label has grown to represent five artists from around the globe-- each one with their own distinct style. Besides the aforementioned Glass Vaults, JUKBOXR has in its arsenal London-based dark electro-pop act Bon Accord; the analog fuzzed -out beat bliss of aBillion from Sydney, Australia, Miami shoegazing techno man Between You And Me, and Broward-based dream pop whiz Arrange. Nibbe does not restrict himself to any one particular genre. “If I hear something and it hits me like ‘What the fuck is this! Everyone should hear this!’, then I will pursue putting a release out from that artist.” Out of sheer coincidence, Nibbe found and fell in love with Arrange’s (birth name Malcom Lacey,) magnificent self-released debut Plantation and agreed to put out his next record through JUKBOXR, realizing after the fact that Arrange lived in Broward County too. JUKBOXR just released Arrange’s follow-up EP titled Five Years With The Sun. Nibbe is pleased with the results calling it “some of the best material he’s produced.” For anyone interested in checking out Nibbe’s acts live, good news, Glass Vaults and Arrange will be touring the East Coast this summer on a 10-date tour that will culminate in Miami. www.jukboxr.com ~ Alex Rendon
