ď ˝ HOW DO WE DEFINE
CLEANING THE UNSEEN? Working on the level of cells and microscopic particles to remove nutrients, films and to control microorganisms continually. The goal is to achieve reasonable health risks and significantly reduce illness and absenteeism.
CLEANING IS BECOMING MORE THAN A WAY OF IMPROVING APPEARANCE. IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT CLEANING CAN GREATLY AFFECT BOTH HYGIENE AND HEALTH. THEREFORE, LET’S LOOK AT HOW CONTAMINATION TRAVELS & INFECTS.
CROSS-CONTAMINATION Cross-contamination is the process of infectious microorganisms being moved from a host to a “fomite” and picked up again by a new host.
Infected Individual
Portal of Entry
Hands, Body Fluids or Open Wound
Hands or Skin “Fomite” (Inanimate Surface supporting life.)
KEEPING BOTH BUILDING OCCUPANTS AND THOSE WHO CLEAN OUR BUILT ENVIRONMENT SAFER IS ONE OF THE FIRST STEPS. HIGH-FLOW FLUID EXTRACTION EQUIPMENT DOES A BETTER JOB OF CLEANING FOR HEALTH, WHILE KEEPING STAFF SEPARATE FROM GERMS.

Cross-contamination results in illness. High Flow Fluid Extraction picks up more of the biofilms and microorganisms present which allow cross-contamination than simple mopping of floors and wiping of fixtures. This is true even of microfiber mopping, which is significantly better than traditional mopping.
USE OF PURELL HAND SANITIZER IN EXTENSIVE STUDY SHOWED 19.8% REDUCTION IN ABSENTEEISM
6,000 students Delaware, Ohio, Tennessee and California City, suburban and rural Sanitizer dispensers at door and bottles around room for easy access
WASH OR SANITIZE
Dust, saliva, skin flakes, bacteria, viruses, mites In Classrooms and Offices ◦ Desktops, counters, lab tables Cafeteria ◦ Tables, counters
TEST SOLUTION:
Students were asked to wash their hands as they do everyday, but also use
ď ˝
PURELL before and after lunch, after recesses and after using the restroom. ď ˝
It was stressed that the students use PURELL
consistently.

IN ANOTHER STUDY:
Daily wiper disinfection of desktops added to a specific hand sanitizer program reduced student absenteeism a total of
one third.
Length of absenteeism from gastro-intestinal disease reduced
by 28%
Norovirus* on desks
reduced 68%
*Norovirus produces extreme gastrointestinal illness and spreads easily.
•Students who were absent due to stomach (gastro-intestinal) illness were cut by 33%
From 24% absent for one or more days during the test in the control group down to 16% in the “intervention” group.
•Length of absenteeism was reduced by 28% From 0-7 days per student in the control group to 0-5 days per student in the intervention group
•Incidents where Norovirus could be cultured from surfaces in the classroom were reduced by 68%. Down from 29% of all desks to 9%
(This particular study found no relationship between the interventions put in place and respiratory illness reduction.)

One of the issues of treating common touchpoints is that traditional cleaning aids don’t do an effective job on irregular surfaces.
SOLUTION:
Disinfectant, disposable wipes Perfect for cleaning critical fomites Re-usable canister 120 wipes per refill Fits perfectly into KaiFly holster for immediate access Fill w/24 oz. of any chemical
Kaivac recommends KaiBosh
Costs about 50% less than Clorox-brand wipes
What gets measured gets done. When it comes to Cleaning the Unseen, we have to find a way to know what we can’t observe.
The ATP meter makes the invisible world measurable. ď ˝ It enables continuous improvement by putting a ď ˝
number on effectiveness of removal.
ATP Meter
ď ˝ The
firefly uses a chemical process to produce light. The ATP meter performs a similar function. It uses a chemical process to convert ATP in living cells into light. The light can then be measured as an indicator of clean.
What gets measured gets attention. ATP meters allow us to put a number on cleaning effectiveness at an unseen level. Success in Cleaning the Unseen leads to concrete, quantifiable reductions in the cost of doing business or running a school.
