Paderborn Station Commander Lt Col J Pott MBE

Happy New Year to one and all, albeit by the time you read the first edition of the year, I’m sure there won’t be many of you left who haven’t yet broken those good intentions we all passed off as New Year’s Resolutions Oh well, there is always next year! Twelve months on from my appointment as Station Commander, Paderborn continues to evolve at pace. Old Units depart and new Units take up residence on the station. Despite all these changes, I sense that we are well placed to meet the challenges that we will continue to face here and across the wider Defence community. The Christmas celebrations seem a life time ago however the numerous events and functions provided across the Station. By a large number of dedicated people were very well received and have left many of us with lots of fond memories. The standard has been set and this will give us a bench mark to improve on this year. Plans are already in place to expand the hugely successful Christmas Market organised by Claire Cornwell. In this edition, I note that the official opening of the eagerly awaited BFBS Station is covered and having been kindly invited to mark the occasion I can also confirm that the event was a resounding success. Unfortunately we do however have to bid farewell to the SSVC retail outlet in the Community Hub. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the staff for their support and wish them all the very best for the future. The area vacated by SSVC will now provide further display and storage facilities for the PRI Shop and an additional seating area close to the HIVE and coffee shop. On the subject of sad farewells HQ Paderborn Station will see the departure of RSM Evans on promotion to Captain and his appointment to the Unit Welfare Officer for 5 RIFLES. We all wish him and his family the very best in his move back to regimental duties and the subsequent unit move back to the Bulford. We do however look forward to welcoming WO1 (RSM) Risdale also from 5 RIFLES as he takes up his new post as RSM Paderborn Station. And finally, this year will hopefully prove no exception in the number of articles and stories Punchlines will bring you, depicting not only feats of sporting prowess and selfless charitable effort, but also keeping you up to date with the speed of change taking place around us, whether it be new organisations and services due to arrive in Paderborn, or the welcome addition of yet more new and improved facilities, including the refurbishment of Barker Barracks Gym, which will be opening in the near future. Please keep the articles and photos coming. All those budding photographers look out for the Paderborn 2016 photo competition and don’t forget, there is no set formula for the magazine contributions. ‘Have Your Say!’ there is always space in which anyone can write in, and quite literally have their say. Wishing you all a prosperous, safe and successful 2016.

Sign Up Today For BFG Text Messages BFG has launched a new text messaging service to send critical information to the community. Users will receive instant notifications on areas such as security, weather and travel disruptions that may affect their area. Although BFG currently communicates using a range of channels, most of these require individuals to seek out information. Text messaging is a simple, effective and quick way of sending the whole community time critical information as it arises. This complements other official BFG channels to ensure that you are well informed of all issues affecting life in BFG. The system will only be used to send messages which cannot wait to be delivered via traditional communications channels. Examples would be travel disruptions eg cancellation of trooper or closure of the ferry or channel tunnel; weather disruptions eg early school closures due to bad weather or bus transport delays or to advise of emerging security issues to ensure our community remain safe eg late notification demonstrations, localised security incidents. Messages will be location-specific as follows: Bielefeld, Gutersloh, Paderborn, ISODETs & Ayrshire Bks Sign up is easy; simply text the location you wish to receive messages for – alternatively text ‘all’ to receive all location messages to 0044 7537 416 040. There will be no fees for receiving messages and sign up costs just one text message at provider rates, irrespective of whether you use a UK or German mobile to register. Comd BFG, Brig Ian Bell said “I encourage all members of the BFG community to sign up for this new service. The ability to communicate instantly with our community helps us to minimize inconvenience and frustration while delivering timely security and safely information.” Where you are aware of an incident which you believe requires instant notification to the community you should call or text the HQ BFG staff Duty Officer on 0049 1738 873 90. 4

BFBS Studio Grand Opening After months of renovation, the eagerly awaited British Forces Broadcasting Services’ (BFBS) Studio in Germany was formally opened on Wednesday 20th January. The old NAAFI Cars showroom, located next to the Paderborn Community Hub in Sennelager, has been transformed in order to house BFBS under one roof becoming almost unrecognisable. This facility and the centralisation of BFBS will enable the number of British Forces Germany (BFG) specific shows to be increased. The facility houses two on-air radio studios, enabling two shows to run simultaneously, and an editing suite for both television and radio. Celebrations began with performances from the Key Stage 2 Choir from Haig School in Gütersloh, led by music teacher Sue Betley. A total of thirty young people aged between 7-11 years put on a polished show for everyone to enjoy, singing some musical favourites: ‘Castle On A Cloud’ from Les Misérables and ‘There’s A Party Here Tonight’ from Cinderella and Rockerfella. Simon Bucks, Head Executive of Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC) who govern BFBS, welcomed everyone, he said, “It is a great honour to be opening these studios, as this is the first time that BFBS in Germany will be housed under the same roof. This fantastic facility really is an example of the strong relations and support with Garrison and HQ BFG, and understanding the importance of communication to our service personnel and their families.” Simon emphasised the SSVC mission to connect, entertain and inform the military community, and their total commitment to those who serve. Colonel Nick Channer, Chief of Staff HQ BFG, said, “I am particularly grateful for my invite and honoured to be opening the Studios, on behalf of Brigadier Ian Bell, Commander BFG. BFBS really is important within the BFG community, it is at the heart of everything we do. It is hoped that BFBS will endure until the very end and remain connected to our communities.” After the cutting of the ribbon, the BFBS Studios was officially opened and everyone was invited to enjoy a scrumptious buffet lunch and cake, followed by a tour of the studios. Simon Bucks expressed his gratitude to all those who had been involved from the project and the tremendous support that had been shown throughout, before stating, “Sennelager could probably claim to have the best BFBS Studios in the world. For a former car showroom, it’s a Rolls Royce of a studio.”

Our Outing To The Kaleidoscope Cinema The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 First things first, this movie was amazing! A quick recap: Katniss has fought back against the capital and shot the leader of the rebel group she was in, beating the capital. Although they won, Katniss was removed from of the capital so Peeta left with her. SPOILER ALERT - if you haven’t seen the film, then do not read on! Whilst travelling through the capital, Katniss and the rest of the group must avoid hidden traps placed by the Peacekeepers. However, before long they become trapped by magic tar where four members of the group are killed. The surviving members come across another trap in the sewers, where they must escape from the grey no-eyed zombie creatures, but one member was caught and killed. At that point of the film, I was REALLY scared but calmed down after about two minutes and I was okay to watch the film. Towards the end, Katniss shot President Coin instead of President Snow, because if Snow had died then Coin would have ruled the Capital and the Districts, and eventually would have become like Snow. Snow was a mean, heartless old man who had people killed for no reason. For her actions, Katniss was removed from the Capital and went back to District 12 with Peeta. It shows 10 years into the future with Katniss, Peeta, their 4 year old boy and 6-8 month old baby girl. Right before the film ends Katniss asks her daughter, “Are you having a nightmare? I have nightmares, I will tell you why one day when you will be able to understand it.” It is very happy at the end and you might get a tear in your eye.

They have to build the film on the Christmas. This can take up to 10 minutes to build. What do the cinema have to wait for before they can play the movie? The cinema has to wait for a licence to unlock the film before they can play it. When does the cinema receive the licence? The cinema receives the licence when the film is released in London. How many seats are in the cinema? There are 310 seats in the cinema. What happens when they don’t get the licence? When they don’t get the licence they have to send all the people home that are in the cinema. What happens when the cinema is over capacitated? When the cinema is over capacitated they have to send people home (with free sweets) Who chooses when the cinema opens? The manager is in charge of when and when not to open.

Paderborn Military Wives Choir Perform At The Dom by Elizabeth Watson What an amazing experience. Last year, I had the pleasure, as part of the Paderborn Military Wives Choir, of performing alongside German choirs at the Anglo German Carol Service that annually takes place at the Paderborn Dom. Over 1400 people attended the Service; it was an incredible and marvellous experience. The Dom is absolutely stunning, and the atmosphere that the Service created was phenomenal; being a part of the Choir and performing was an honour. The Paderborn Military Wives Choir had the pleasure of rehearsing with two very talented choirs, Chor Zwischentöne, and Chorgemeinschaft St. Hedwig, in the weeks leading up to the event. Through this, we formed firm friendships with members of the local German community and celebrated the end of our Christmas singing sessions with a meal together at the Brauhaus in Paderborn. The German choir members were extremely friendly and helpful, and the practise sessions were full of laughter. I only joined the choir a few months ago, but to have been a part of the whole experience and have some ‘me time’ has been a breath of fresh air. The best part of belonging to the Paderborn Military Wives Choir is that you do not need to be a great singer; it is about the joining in and having a go. I can honestly say that I am very much looking forward to continuing the fun with the Choir and being part of the wider German community in the future. Anyone who is considering joining the choir but is unsure, don’t be, you will be glad you did.

New Premises for the Paderborn Labour Support Unit On Tuesday 24th November, the Paderborn Labour Support Unit (LSU) relocated from Alanbrooke Barracks, to Building 139 on Normandy Barracks in Sennelager. This move was no small feat and went without a hitch, due to the manpower provided by the Paderborn Station QM’s Department (Alfie’s Gang) and support from the LSU staff. The new premises provides a much-enhanced environment for visitors and staff alike, as well as hopefully being more accessible for those seeking employment and to those already in employment. After the move was complete the ribbon was cut and Colonel John Connelly, Commander Westfalen Garrison, on behalf of the OC LSU, Major Jon Moreton, officially opened the building on Tuesday 1st December. Also in attendance, to mark the occasion, were Mr Clive Cope SOL LEC Support Service and the staff of the LSU. After the formalities of the official opening, a presentation of a muchdeserved Commander British Forces Germany Commendation was awarded to a shocked Mrs Brigitte Davis, Senior LSU Recruiter. This was for Brigitte’s selfless dedication to BFG, which is far in excess of that generally expected and has seen continuous service to the Crown for over 45 years.

Paderborn LSU looks forward to welcoming everyone to the new building; the opening times are:

Mon -Thu: 0800hrs -1230hrs & 1300hrs - 1530hrs Fri: 0800hrs -1100hrs Full contact details can be found at www.bfgnet.de/employment

LENT

By the time this magazine reaches your postbox, the New Year celebrations will be a distant memory. Valentine’s hearts and Shrove Tuesday pancakes will have replaced Christmas chocolates. Lent will see an end to all that threatens our weak wills, and to things we regard as “sinful”. There is no better time of the year to think about what we have permitted to become habits that control us, and all in us that is not pure, true, clean and healthy. Perhaps this is the year you will give up Facebook for Lent? If that is a step too far, why not try to balance the remote friends there, with meeting some new people at either of our weekly church services? St Christopher’s, on Dempsey Barracks, is a beautifully still and reflective place, while St Peter’s, on Barker Barracks, is great for families with children. We would love to welcome you, as we welcome Rev’d Daniel Critchlow and Christiane, with Rebekah, to our Garrison church family. Daniel is the new chaplain for 35 Engineers and 3ACS Bn REME. Rev’d Heather Rendell is the new Westfalen Garrison Chaplain. We also welcome back Fr Pip Smith to 5 Rifles. You can check us all out, and the details of church and children’s activities, on the Facebook page - if you haven’t given it up for Lent.

Time to Talk Day

five mins

We all have mental health, just like we all have physical health. Mental health issues are common and affect 1 in 4 people every year. It’s a normal part of life, so let’s get the nation talking. A simple chat can make a real difference. You don’t have to be an expert - a text, a quick walk together, asking ‘How are you?’ (and genuinely listening to the answer) are all ways to show family, friends, neighbours and colleagues that you care. Listening is just as important as talking, and it can take practice.

18

By talking and listening to someone you can give them reassurance. Nonjudgemental listening and giving reassurance are just two of the skills taught on a Mental Health First Aid course. Find out more at mhfaengland.org. Get involved in Time to Talk Day at time-to-change.org.uk/timetotalkday or join in the conversation on Twitter using #timetotalk. Time to Talk Day is a great starting point for conversations about mental health, but let’s make them happen all year round!

The Yellow Bin The new recycling bin was launched on the 1st January 2016 across the City of Paderborn and after more than 20 years of use, the yellow bags are no longer. Introducing the new robust container makes the separating of waste even easier and collection a lot more hygenic. The recycling bins mean that there is no need for you to think about whether a broken bucket or old metal keys are allowed to be disposed of in the ‘yellow bag’ - now all plastic and metal parts can be put into the new recycling bin. This regulation makes sense with a view to material and energetic recycling, and is an important step towards expanding the protection of resources and the sustainable recycling economy. This is the reason why collecting all plastic and metal waste is established by legislation.

What is allowed in? Items such as packaging, Tetra Pak, styrofoam, toys, buckets, watering cans, flower pots, tools, screws, nails, pots, pans, cutlery, taps, tins & aluminium trays.

What is not allowed in? Items such as batteries, lamps, electrical devices, glass, bio-waste, residual waste, cardboard, paper, old clothes, shoes & wood.

What sizes do the recycling bins come in? Experience from our model testing in Elsen showed that a 240 Litre container is appropriate for most properties and is usually sufficient for a 4/5 person household. In addition to the standard container, there’s also a 1,100 Litre container for larger households/flats.

How often is the recycling bin emptied? Every 4 weeks. Please see the current waste calendar for the emptying day.

Can I share my recycling bin with a neighbour? This is possible in principle. For more information, please see your ASP service centre.

What should I do if the bin isn’t big enough for the rubbish? If the volume isn’t suitable in the long run, the property owner or Housing Estate Manager (HEM) can order a further recycling bin.

I’ve still got yellow bags, am I allowed to still use them? No, because emptying the recycling bins is mainly carried out with automatic side loaders, collection is fundamentally intended for the bing. If, in exceptional cases, not all rubbish fits in the container, you can bring this to the ASP recycling centres.

Tinnitus Awareness Week 8th - 14th February 2016

Between 8th - 14th February, the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) will be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Tinnitus Awareness Week (TAW) by launching the ‘Tea for Tinnitus’ Campaign. Tinnitus is the sensation of ringing or buzzing in the ears, which can occur intermittently or continuously and vary in loudness. The sensation can often be worse when the background noise is low. Music that is too loud can cause issues, including tinnitus, often causing irreversible damage. During TAW, the BTA are also highlighting the need to protect hearing with its campaign ‘Plug’em’. It is to encourage anyone exposed to unsafe sound levels to protect their hearing by wearing earplugs, and raise awareness of the damage that can be caused. There shouldn’t be a stigma around protecting your hearing.

Tea for Tinnitus Afternoon Date: Wednesday 10th February Time: 1400-1530hrs Where: Audiology Department (Building 141, Normandy Bks) Why: To support these campaigns, and raise awareness of tinnitus and hearing protection amongst the BFG Service Community

Open to everyone. Donations are welcome.

Germany Rebasing & Drawdown 2015 Mission Accomplished

During 2015, HQ British Forces Germany (HQ BFG) undertook the largest and most concentrated peacetime rebasing activity in a generation. This involved moving 11,000 British personnel from Germany to UK, equivalent to the population of a town the size of Amesbury. The numbers are impressive! HQ BFG rebased 14 units from Germany to UK; moved 5,111 soldiers and 280 civil servants plus their families to 10 separate countries around the world ranging from UK and Cyprus to France and Saudi Arabia and one horse, named Talavera, to Scotland! There was equally impressive work achieved in returning to the UK with 11 barracks closing, thousands of vehicles and containers shipped and many schools, married quarters and med centres shut down and handed back to the authorities. The undoubted success of rebasing and drawdown in 2015 is the result of a magnificent team effort coordinated by HQ BFG in Bielefeld. But the Army Basing Team, HQ Regional Command who received units into UK, Unit Welfare Office staffs, DIO plus a range of suppliers, are also recognised for their hard work. Credit is also given to CarillionAmey, who provided Service Families Accommodation (SFA) across the UK and Agility Ltd, the MOD’s unaccompanied baggage removals contractor who have completed over 2000 families’ removals. Personnel and families had a key role to play, with careful sequencing of removal surveys, SFA allocations, household removals, handover of German married quarters, travel to UK and moving in to new quarters. Each also had to close personal German bank accounts, cancel German contracts, de- and re-register cars and secure UK school places for children. A major focus throughout the rebasing process was to ensure that single soldiers, married personnel and their families had the best possible experience. As part of this, the 2015 moves were concentrated in the school summer holiday period to minimise the disruption to our children’s education and to enable units to move en bloc and quickly establish themselves in the UK. The removals system was tailored to the volumes and timeframes involved. This included the use of hi-capacity ISO containers rather than furniture trucks, because there were not enough furniture trucks available in Europe to meet our throughput. Despite initial concerns around reliability and capacity, the removals system delivered a very good standard of service. Belongings were packed to the higher sea move standard and there were, in fact proportionately fewer complaints than for routine truck moves. Looking forward, we know that a small number of units will rebase in 2016 and it has been confirmed that rebasing from Germany will be completed in summer 2019 when 20 Armoured Infantry Brigade and Force Troops Command supporting units will rebase to the Salisbury Plain Training Area (SPTA) as the final piece of the Army Basing Plan jigsaw that will see 3 Brigades based around the SPTA. This certainty over rebasing dates will allow us, and families, to plan for the future. HQ BFG, together with its partner organisations, is committed to ensuring that a vibrant and well supported community remains in Germany. The single garrison under HQ Westfalen Garrison, and the concentration of resources (both financial and people) provides a common high standard of education, healthcare, dental, and welfare support to single personnel and all families across the community to the end.

SSVC Store Closures Further to the announcement in December 2015 that SSVC shops were due to close at the end of January 2016, following a very successful sales campaign, both shops closed ahead of schedule. SSVC would like to reiterate that goods purchased from SSVC would still be covered under the terms of the manufacturer’s warranty. Customers requiring service would need to contact the manufacturer directly. Additionally, BFBS TV Set Top Boxes will still be issued and returned locally.

Christmas 20 Paderborn Anglo-German Carol Service There are many different traditions that will mark the start of Christmas for an individual, whether that is celebrating Nikolaustag on 6th December or putting up decorations and the Christmas tree. For many Paderborners, the start of Christmas begins after the annual Anglo-German Carol Service, held in the Paderborn Dom; last year the service was held on Thursday 10th December. The traditional AngloGerman Carol Service, which includes the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, was first held on Christmas Eve in 1918 and after a revision of the Order of Service in 1919, the service now always commences with ‘Once in Royal David’s City’. As in previous years the Paderborn Dom was packed with over 1200 people singing hymns, which was led by the enchanting music from the Band of the Grenadier Guards. With such a beautiful setting and a massive amount of Christmas spirit, the evening was another great success and further enhances the Anglo-German bond we have with the community of Paderborn.

Christingle Service The Christingle Service, which took place on Wednesday 9th December in the Abdinghof Kirche, saw both German and British communities come together for this annual Anglo-German event. Bishopspark, John Buchan and Luther School’s all had pupils who gave readings, as well performances being given from their School Choirs. As well as various readings, carols and prayers, The Lord’s Prayer was said by all in both languages; this was to unite the congregation with the children and young people being cared for all over the world by youth and children’s organisations. A collection was taken for the Children’s Society and for the work with children and young people that takes place in the local community. After the singing of the last carol, ‘Silent Night’, the children put on their coats and collected a lit Christingle, before they led the clergy out whilst The Band of the Grenadier Guards played the Christmas Medley. The Garrison wishes to express its thanks to Dr. Eckhard Düker and the congregation of the Abdinghof Kirche for helping to facilitate this event; to The Band of the Grenadier Guards, the Queen’s Royal Hussars and finally, to NAAFI for their donation of the oranges and sweets and to the staff and children of the participating schools.

015 Round Up Celebration Of Birth Each year, a ‘Celebration of Birth’ takes place; this is an opportunity for parents with young babies to come together to commemorate the achievements that have taken place over the course of the year, especially the birth of their children. And, of course, last year was no exception with a total of over seventy parents and babies attendance. The celebration took place in the Normandy Welfare Centre on Tuesday 1st December. Parents were able to enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee, whilst having the opportunity to meet other parents with young babies. To add a little more excitement, Father Christmas popped in to say, “Hello,” and spread a little holiday cheer.

A huge “Thank You” must go to the Health Visitors and Midwives for all their efforts that went into organising the event, and to the Normandy Welfare Team for being such great hosts. Finally, gratitude must be given to each of the Units for all their donations to fund the event.

Santa Came to Town Luckily Santa Claus is no stranger to artic conditions, as he braved the cold temperatures of Paderborn Station from 7th to 10th December. This special visit is organised annually by 3 CS Bn REME, in order to bring some Christmas cheer to our young community and more importantly, a chance for the young people to personally hand Santa their Christmas wishlists. With festive music playing, the children climbed aboard the famous sleigh to speak with Santa and were treated by the elves to some yummy sweets. Despite the chilly evening air, the spirits of Santa’s little helpers, which included the 3 CS Bn REME welfare team, were not dampened as they assisted in getting Santa and his sleigh across the various married quarter areas in Paderborn Station. “Thank You” to 3 CS Bn REME for another successful visit.

Christmas 20 Overall Winning Design

Christmas Cake Creativity The Westfalen Garrison Christmas Cake Competition was held on Tuesday 8th December, in the NATO Officers’ Mess on Normandy Barracks. This was a great opportunity for chefs and members of our community, from across Westfalen Garrison, to show off their baking and design skills in a fun and friendly way, as well as having the opportunity to donate cakes to local charities and agencies. One particular charity, which is close to the hearts of personnel from HQ Paderborn Station, is the Wohngruppe Winkelshof – St. Johannisstift Paderborn; a Children’s Home situated in Reitburg-Mastholte.

It takes a lot of organising and effort for an event like this to take place, so it was nice to see such a high number of entries; which was double the amount of that last year. Sgt Jackman, 5 RIFLES, explained, “It can take up to a month to plan, make and perfect a Christmas Cake. It can also be expensive. To help with the costs, and to show their support, NAAFI kindly donated the funding for five cakes to each Unit and a block of 5kg icing.” The cakes were judged on their originality of design (imitative, flair and imagination), technical expertise (smooth icing, joins/cracks showing), overall appearance (design, theme and eye catching) and the use of additional skills (intricate detailing/additional degree of difficulty). There was 6 categories, which would have two prizes given for each, as well as an overall Best Cake prize. SSgt Allen, Paderborn Station, said, “Entries have come from all across Westfalen Garrison. I am overwhelmed with the turn out, especially as people have taken the time, at such a busy time of year, to support this event. We had 65 entries. I am really pleased to see that the kids and Schools have got involved and entered; to me Christmas is all about the children.” Commander Westfalen Garrison, Colonel John Connelly, presented the certificates and prizes to the winners of each category. He was delighted to have been a part of the event and went on to say, “Superb, is the only fitting praise I can give the 65 magnificently decorated cakes, which have come from a real range of ages. What was most impressive was the attention to detail of the winning pieces. I was blown away by Elizabeth Watson’s cake, against stiff opposition she won the overall prize, with a stunning replication of Santa sitting by someone in bed, all in Icing; the attention to detail was breathtaking. Bethany Sames and Olivia France took 1st and 2nd places in the Children’s category, which to be honest gave some of the SNCO and Executive Chef a good run for their money. In the School’s category it was clear that this had been a whole school project, from the design to the delivery. Paderborn Station and HQ 20 Armd Inf Bde pulled together a great competition which has set the scene for Christmas. Very well done to SSgt Allen for making this happen.”

SSgt Allen expressed his gratitude, “I would like to thank everyone for their support, especially to the Units and individuals who got involved, the Station Commander for the use of the NATO Officers’ Mess and to the judges for taking the time to help.”

Overall Winner: Mrs Elizabeth Watson (1 AMR)

Finally, the overall winner, Mrs Elizabeth Watson said, “I was so surprised and delighted to hear that I’d won the Westfalen Garrison Christmas Cake Competition, especially given the high standard of all the other entries. I’ve just turned my hobby into my own business ‘Top-Tastic Toppers’ creating personalised cake toppers, so this has really boosted my confidence, so I would really like to say: Thank You!”

015 Round Up Paderborn Station Soldier’s Christmas Lunch Paderborn Station hosted a Soldier’s Christmas Lunch, which was held in the NATO Warrant Officers’ (WO) & Sergeants’ Mess on Normandy Barracks, Sennelager. The event was orgainsed by the Station RSM, WO1 Evans, as a way to say “Thank You” to all the soldiers, from Private to Corporal, who work for HQ Paderborn Station, 4MI, 110 Pro Coy (1RMP) and 1MWD. The three-course festive lunch was served up by Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, WOs and Officers, as an opportunity to show the soldiers their appreciation for the commitment to work they showed over the course of the year. Having also received a Christmas mug each, the soldiers had a chance to win one of the twenty-five gifts that Santa had the honour of giving out; these ranged from Under Armour gloves, perfume and aftershave sets, to one of the booby prizes of chewing gum, air freshener or party poppers. The afternoon was full of festive fun and a great way to end a busy, yet incredibly successful year for the soldiers of Paderborn Station.

Christmas 20 The John Buchan School ‘Bake Off’ There is something very comforting about the smell of home baking; add Christmas aromas to the mix and you can just imagine what the corridors of John Buchan School (JBS) smelt like on Friday 4th December. This was the School’s annual inter-house bake off, where the four houses (Dahl, Rowling, Shakespeare and Wilson) go head-to-head in a baking challenge. This year’s panel of esteemed judges, with the enviable task of taste-testing everything, were: Padre Mike Thomason, Mr Neil Roberts, Mrs Gemma John and Mr Andy Drakeford. They were required to critique a sweet and savoury dish from each team and mark each dish with a score out of 10 for: uniformity, texture/taste, presentation, theme and difficulty. With Mary Berry (Tracey Watts, Head of Food Technology) on hand to keep a watchful eye on the judges, Shakespeare’s treats were first to be judged. Their Salmon & Cream Cheese Pie was a great start to proceedings, with the judges commenting on how nice the taste was. This was followed by their Treacle Tart, earning the comment, “Wow, that’s gorgeous!” Next up, Team Dahl with Savoury Egg Custard Tarts and a Raspberry Custard Pie. The judges were impressed by the tarts’ even sizes and the really good flavour from the raspberries in the pie. Team Rowling were next with mouth-watering Sausage & Caramelised Onion Rolls and a Frangipane Tart, which the judges agreed were the most technical of the bakes and both dishes had fabulous pastry.

Lastly was the baking by Team Wilson, who came up with the great idea of baking individual tarts to represent the different nationalities of the JBS pupils, with six different varieties; including Nepalese (Rice, Sultanas & Cinnamon), German (Currywurst) and English (Bacon, Egg & Beans). There was a savoury tart to suit every taste bud; this was followed by an Apple Tarte Tatin, full of the flavours of Christmas. After judging had taken place, the whole School gathered in the hall, many wearing their woolly hats to raise money for the NSPCC Woolly Hat Day. Mel Giedroyc (Kirsty Cluff ) explained how intense and busy the kitchen had been this year, with the bakers all being really keen to take part. Paul Hollywood (Jamie McKenna) confirmed Mel’s sentiments by describing all the participants as, “amazing.”

The task of announcing the winner went to Mr Neil Roberts (Vice Chair, SGC), he said, “Congratulations to all the competitors, for a job well done.” He then went on to announce the placings; in joint 3rd were Dahl and Wilson, 2nd went to Shakespeare, which left the overall winners as Team Rowling, who all won the Great British Bake Off Christmas Cookbooks. Finally, this year’s Star Baker Award went to: Malachi Francois.

015 Round Up “Oh, Yes It Is…” Between Monday 7th and Wednesday 9th December, the children from SCE schools across Westfalen Garrison were in for a treat when Combined Services Entertainment (CSE) performed ‘Sleeping Beauty’, following on from the success of ‘Aladdin’ last year. Despite a restricted timetable during the festive season, performances were held at several locations across the Garrison to spread some Christmas Cheer. Both students and staff alike had a blast embracing the spirit of the Christmas pantomime. In between all the laughter and excitement, the children fully engaged with the cast as they wiggled with Giggles, the Court Jester, and booed at Maleficent; the Evil Witch. Of course, no pantomime would be complete without the shouts of “It’s behind you!” and “Oh, yes it is!” This performance cleverly integrated a few modern twists to the timeless classic, including the replacement of the original songs with some Chart favourites such as: ‘Bills’ by LunchMoney Lewis, ‘Watch’ by Silento and the iconic ‘Uptown Funk’ by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars, each time encouraging the audience to sing-along; with some even turning it into a dance party. Teachers and staff didn’t miss out and were kept entertained with jokes about iPhones and other pop culture references such as “Because I’m worth it,” the trademark phrase of L’Oreal. Ann-Marie Mason, Bielefeld School Headteacher, said, “The children thoroughly enjoyed the pantomime and were full of praise for the group of performers. Some of the older children discussed their favourite characters. I would like to say a big thank you CSE for the production and to all those involved in the organisation of the event.” HQ BFG, HQ Westfalen Garrison and each of the Stations teamed up to organise the performances, in order to bring some joy and laughter just in time for the holidays. The BA (G) Welfare Fund sponsored the productions by CSE, who are the live entertainment branch of the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC), and the official providers to the British Armed Forces. They perform to British Service Personnel and their families across the globe.

Christmas 201 CSE Entertain The PRU The award winning CSE Events and Entertainment team recently visited Sennelager to perform at the Personnel Recovery Unit’s (PRU) Christmas party. For the Wounded, Injured and Sick soldiers assigned to the PRU, the evening provided them with an opportunity to relax away from their recovery programme and enjoy a night of come-dy and music. As Private Caroline Windridge, 1 Military Working Dogs, explained, “Everyone at the PRU are really supportive and helpful it definitely helps being here around other soldiers who are going through the same sort of experiences, doubts and concerns as you recover. However, sometimes the recovery process can get a bit serious so its good to get a chance to relax and have a bit of a laugh together at events like this. It’s great that CSE are here and a fantastic morale boost just before Christmas. I am looking forward to seeing the comedians and enjoying the night.” Speaking just ahead of the evening’s performance CSE Events co-ordinator Sakina Bugge said, “It’s fantastic to be here tonight and provide, hopefully, a night of wonderful entertainment for the guys. Its important that we in CSE continue to support them, their families and the wider Armed Forces communities; evenings like this cannot be underestimated as it gives them a chance just to forget their worries get away from everything even if it is only for just one night and enjoy themselves. We really enjoy providing these nights and are already looking at planning more for next year.” After a first half where the comedians jokes came thick and fast and also involved a great deal of audience participation, the laughs were followed by a musical performance of different genres that entertained all. By the end of the evening everyone agreed the show had been a resounding success. For Lance Corporal Megan Wilson, who has completed her recovery plan and will be returning to 6 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps in the New Year, the CSE show provided a great way of saying goodbye to everyone she had befriended, adding, “It has been a fantastic show, I have really enjoyed it, and it is a brilliant way to end the year before we all go our separate ways.”

Bishopsparks School Christmas Fayre The Christmas Fayre held by Bishopspark School was a huge success with all the hard work of the staff and children paying off. Santa and his Elves were kept very busy, and it was mentioned how polite and well behaved all the children were. A total €1604.34 was raised, which went back into the school fund and used to benefit all the children at Bishopspark School. A massive “Thank You” to everyone who helped make the event the success it was.

15 Round Up John Buchan School

Christingle Service The JBS Christingle choir wowed a packed Abdinghof Kirche congregation on Wednesday 5th December. Pupils from John Buchan School sang two Christmas songs: A Spaceman Came Travelling and Hope of Heaven, with both Lucas Johnson-Cooper and Fatima Cham taking centre stage with solos. The children sang beautifully and even got to take away their very own Christingle to enjoy at home.

Year 6 presents ‘A Christmas Carol’ Many hours of rehearsals paid off when Year 6 performed their version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ to an overwhelming number of parents and siblings. All of the Year 6 children played a part, be it having an acting part in the play or forming part of the very enthusiastic Chorus. Year 6 produced a seemless performance that saw Brodie Davies as Scrooge, Jake Millar as Charles Dickens and even treated the audience to fantastic solo performances by Alios McGinley-Smith, Katie Meikle and Brodie Davies. A big “Thank You” to all our families that supported the event.

Soest Christmas Market The frozen cars and frost on the ground was the perfect weather for the annual Year 6 trip to Soest Christmas Markets. The children were all very excited and had already decided what sweet treats they were going to buy before they had even left school! Once at Soest Markets, the children all had the chance to peruse the many stalls and spend their money wisely on Christmas gifts (or sweets and chocolates). Any bad weather held off, and festive spirits were high on the journey back to school.

John Buchan School’s Bon Voyage to Dr. Mark Whalley Being a part of the Military community means that we often have to bid farewell; this is something that we have become accustomed to. Sadly there are times when our farewells are to members of the community that have been an important part of our lives, whether as a colleague, friend or teacher. This was the case on Monday 30th November, when John Buchan School (JBS) held a special musical assembly to commemorate Dr. Mark Whalley’s time there, as he leaves to take up a new post in the UK. Dr. Mark Whalley arrived at JBS, as the Head of Science, in January 2009. He had an immediate impact on the School, showing superb support to the staff and inspiring the pupils to play musical instruments; a passion of his. When Mark took on the role as Head Teacher, he embraced the challenge with a clear vision - to add to the School’s strengths, it’s successes and it’s values. Mr Andy Drakeford (Deputy Head) said, “It is difficult and challenging to get the balance of success and values right in a School, Dr. Whalley has got this balance right. At the heart of all the decisions he made were the pupils, closely followed by the staff.” The assembly started with a warm round of applause as Dr. Whalley entered the School Hall, followed by two beautiful performances by staff and pupils who sang and played the instruments to: “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” by Bob Dylan and “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. These performances were a true testament to the talent within JBS, and further emphasised the inspiration, encouragement and passion for music that Dr. Whalley has shown to the staff and pupils. Following on from this, there was staff collaboration in a performance of “You Raise Me Up” by Westlife. Following the emotional musical tributes, Andy Drakeford gave a speech, he said, “I took inspiration from Mark and started to play a musical instrument and although I didn’t believe I could do it, Mark gave me the belief that I could.” In honour of this, Andy pulled out his Ukulele to perform a song he had dedicated to Dr. Whalley, which was written and sung from the heart. During his performance, staff and pupils clapped along and a somewhat flustered Mr Drakeford finished to a rapturous round of applause. On behalf of the Head of the School Governance Committee (SGC), Mr Neil Roberts presented Dr. Whalley with a SGC Commendation Certificate. Neil said, “JBS is not just a good school, it is a great school thanks to the time, effort, dedication and leadership of Mark Whalley.” In response, Dr. Whalley gave his final speech, “I did not know how I was going to feel today. Seven years ago when I arrived, it was the JBS Christmas dinner and staff pulled up a chair for me to join them. The welcome was so warm that I quickly came to realise that JBS was special, that is because of one word, Unity.. We are a family. I steer the ship but this school is great because of everyone in it. We have phenomenally good teachers because they care for their pupils and for each other. Thank you everybody for making this an extremely enjoyable job and for making my 7 years here unforgettable.”

1PWRR Rugby Tour of Fiji After many months of organisation and anticipation, the 1PWRR Rugby Team finally arrived in Fiji on the 4th of Jan after a very long flight across the globe. The team was welcomed to Fiji with traditional necklaces and many families from serving Fijian soldiers in 1PWRR. The first port of call was to the Sigatoka Sand Dunes to acclimatise to the very hot South Pacific sun. The team conducted hill reps and some touch rugby with a well earned dip in the Pacific Ocean to cool down. The team only had three days before their first match and it was vital they would be ready to take on their first opponents. The team slowly adjusted to the humidity and temperature, managing to fit in several trips across the islands, mixed in with some training when possible. Day 3 saw the team dedicating the full day to training in the scorching sun and tropical rain, with temperatures in the mid 30’s with 80% humidity, it was going to be a big ask to take on Delta Company of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) the next day. The first match against the RFMF was a tough, physical game in the harsh humidity and heavy rain. After 80 minutes of hard, hard work Delta Coy RFMF won 10 – 0, a close match followed by a well earned beer, the match making the Fijian national press. The next few stops for the Tigers included Rakiraki village for a day of well earned rest and Dauniivi village to host a rugby clinic for the children and a game of 7’s against the local high school side. This was followed by an authentic Fijian lunch which left the team a little more than full. The team then moved to the island of Suva with an afternoon of sightseeing and back to training. The Tigers were given the privilege of using the Police Barracks and then visited the Fiji National Museum and St. Christopher’s Orphanage where they spent time with the children and donated books and stationary. Some members of the team also managed to visit a fallen soldier, Cpl Raymond Maharaj, who served with 1PWRR from 2000 – 2007, but tragically died in an accident whilst on leave in Fiji, gone but not forgotten… The second match would see the Tigers take on the semi-professional Fijian Navy. The Tigers showed their fighting spirit worthy of their nickname in the 39 – 8 loss against a team who have faced off against the All Blacks and who contained some of the Fiji Rugby’s international 7’s players. The Tigers continued the tour moving to the stunning Coral Coast where they saw the Coral Coast Tournament. This tournament decides the Fijian National side and is fiercely competitive. The Tigers were even treated to a visit from a Fijian national hero and 7’s legend, Serevi. The final two days saw the Tigers visit a volcanic mud pool and thermal springs. They felt the years (and previous games) melt away in the special volcanic mud and natural spring water. It was also an opportunity to thank their host, George, with a Tigers plaque and t-shirt. The team had a fantastic time in Fiji, now its back to work and reality.

Ex SPECULAR The Bde HQ and Staff took not time getting back to business and swiftly deployed back to Salisbury PLain to participate in Ex SPECULAR. The exercise was used to validate 1 Armd Inf Bde and ensure their deadiness and therefore 20 AI Bde took the opportunity to go and shadow the exercise. The exercise was a great success and allowed 20AI at the start of their Training Year to capture best practice and identify the lessons learnt as we move forward... The Bde personnel were accommodated in the luxurious Knook Camp which was typically wet, wild and windy but all the hard work from 1 Yorks who provided real life support certainly made things a whole lot better for all those attending. A great value exercise as we move forward through our trading year..

Iron Fist Cycle Club The renamed and reformed Iron Fist Cycle Club (IFCC) took to the roads for the first time in early January in positively warm conditions of a balmy +4 degrees to complete a Friday afternoon 2 hour cycle. The aim of the IFCC is to promote cycling generally throughout the Bde and in doing so encourage complete novices and stretch seasoned individuals alike. The benefits of cycling are enormous with it being the third most popular recreational activity in the UK. It is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it’s also a form of transport. It saves you money, gets you fit, keeps the weight down and is good for the environment. In addition It’s a low-impact type of exercise, so it’s easier on your joints than running, tabbing or other high-impact aerobic activities. For example, someone who weighs 80kg (12st 9lb) will burn more than 650 calories with an hour’s riding, which will tone up the legs, glutes and If you ride up hills or off-road, you’ll also work your upper body. So if you have never cycled before or are a seasoned Lycra Clad WARRIOR please come along to the Club rides which will widely published. Happy and safe riding….

Football Tour

1PWRR Tour the United States to America On returning from Christmas leave, several members of the Battalion eased back into work with a football tour to America. The tour would comprise of three matches against some very competitive sides as well as cultural visits all along the west coast. The team arrived in Los Angeles on the 5th Jan to the worst weather experienced in LA for a very long time, however, the team would not let a bit of rain ruin a trip of a lifetime. The team eased into the tour with some training sessions in North Hollywood, focusing on agility work and passing drills in preparation for the first match and acclimatise to conditions more suited to Brecon in Wales. The first match would be played against AC Omega, a team who are currently county champions of the semi professional league they play in. It would be a tough match, under floodlights, but the Tigers were able to overcome AC Omega with an impressive 2-0 win, with LCpl Tom Hegarty opening the scoring. After a few days of recovery and a tour of the sights in Hollywood, the team travelled to San Diego where they faced San Ysidro FC, who are based five minutes from the Mexican border. This time the Tigers would face sterner opposition in San Ysidro, narrowly losing out 3-2 to a well drilled and athletic team. Our footballers can hold their heads high after they fought hard as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. After the narrow defeat in San Diego, the team travelled to Las Vegas for the final match and some well deserved rest. The last matchthey played Tyneside United, a team comprised of ex-professional players, who form up for exhibition matches and named after Newcastle United, they even played in the black and white jerseys. On a cold night in Las Vegas our footballers came up against a side of true quality, it is a testament to the players that they managed to hold Tyneside to a 2-0 defeat, giving everything in this last match. A great tour was had by all and this provided a fantastic opportunity for members of the Battalion to travel overseas and represent the Regiment.

Battle Group Study Day Recently 1 PWRR kicked off the training year by bringing the Battle Group together. The study lasted for two days, a day in the Battalion Model Room and a day out at the River Weser, about an hour and half north of Paderborn. It was a chance for the Battle Group to properly meet, but mostly consisted of catching up with old friends from previous deployments.

The aim was to talk through and develop Battle Group procedures in a number of key areas, areas we need to get right in order for a successful training year, but ultimately to be an effective fighting Battle group ready for operations. The first day consisted of a model exercise to ensure we were happy with the basics followed by the trip to the River Weser where we put it into practice on the ground, albeit in wellies and not armoured vehicles.

Ex LONDON BUGLE and the Regimental Awards by Lance Corporal Bhupinder Singh Shergill

The fourth biennial Rifles Regimental Awards were held in the heart of London. Arriving in the early hours of the morning, a soft mist covered the delights of the capital. Once it cleared, we set out into Whitehall in search of the Ministry of Defence. We were welcomed in for a tour of the building and given an insight into our strategic headquarters, which was particularly interesting given the recently published SDSR and the coincidental parliamentary vote on Syria. Afterwards, we took the opportunity to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, surrounded by excited tourists. The colourful British ceremonial display lasted about 45 minutes and we all concluded that the Foot guards are welcome to it! After which, we had the privilege of being invited to 10 Downing Street. Seeped with history and art, that reflects past inhabitants and gifts received from guests. The household staff gave us a tour of the grounds (in exchange for a Rifles plaque, quite rightly), including the cabinet room and many state drawing rooms. As night fell, we donned our tuxedos, which added an air of English 007 glamour and headed out, minus the Aston Martin DB5. The magnificent Guildhall London was the spectacular backdrop for the event. The evening began with a champagne reception in the Guildhall Art Gallery. The walls adorned with priceless collection of art treasures dating as far back as the Pre-Raphaelite era. There was an ambiance of grandeur with music from Band of Bugles as we were ushered into the Old Library with its magnificent stained glass window, depicting William Caxton for dinner. My first impressions: I was taken aback by the scale and pageantry of the night, illustrated by the invitations and programmes to the formal place settings. I was deeply thankful for the guidance of my fellow Rifleman, preventing me from tucking straight into dinner, not least given that HRH The Countess of Wessex was sat opposite me. The Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG, KJ, together with the Colonel Commandant, General Sir Nicholas Carter, KCB, CBE, DSO, ADC Gen were in attendance, alongside (and no less significant) Rfn from D Company 5 Rifles. This marvellous evening ended with 5 Rifles receiving Colonel Commandant’s Commendation Awards for WO2 Lansdowne, CSjt Duggan, Sjt Stocks and the Prince Philip Bugle was awarded (again) to Rifleman Loudon. Congratulations and Well Done Gents. The night didn’t quite end there. Alongside peers from 3 Rifles, we launched a patrol into central London and ended up in the Roadhouse, which kept us occupied until we could celebrate no longer!

‘My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas’ On Friday 4th December the WO’s & Sgt’s Mess was transformed into a sea of pink sparkles and bling as the women of 3 BN enjoyed a night of glamour. The evening started off by everyone being put into gypsy families and a game of twister followed by a dance off between the families! Mini crowns were given out as prizes which added to the occasion. A three course candlelight dinner followed and raffle price draw until it was time to dance the night away. A fantastic effort was made by all who attended with some real show stopper dresses on display. A big thank you must be made to the wives committee and welfare team for organising such a successful and entertaining evening. The committee would also like to thank Sgt Pete Moffat for his help and for putting on a great disco.

Santa’s Sleigh 2015 Another successful Santa’s Sleigh was organised this year between 7th to 10th December. This special visit is organised annually in order to bring some festive cheer to the Paderborn and Sennelager community. With festive music playing, the children climbed aboard the famous sleigh to speak with Santa and were treated by the elves to some yummy sweets. Despite the chilly evening air, the sprits of Santa’s little helpers, which included the 3 BN REME welfare team, were not dampened as they assisted in getting Santa and his sleigh across the various married quarter areas in Paderborn Station.

We hope you all had a good Christmas leave and are prepared for what is going to be another busy year for 35 Engineer Regiment. As always we thank you for your continued support. 77 Armoured Engineer Squadron returned from Kenya just prior to Christmas. They had been on Ex CRABAPPLE 15 since September and whilst they all enjoyed themselves out there, they were all rather excited to be back home in time to spend Christmas with their families. They had been responsible for continuing the construction of the Armoury building and finishing off the RMP station and the Finance building. The Armoury building was in dire need of walls, both internal and external, so they set to work! They used over 3000 blocks, each weighing around 40kg to get the walls finished so that the roof could be installed by the next Squadron. The RMP station and the Finance building required a lot more finishing touches (painting, tiling, electrics, plumbing) on the good work from the previous Squadrons that had come through. It wasn’t all hard work in Kenya, there was definitely the “work hard, play hard” mentality. Everyone in the squadron had the opportunity to undertake some great Adventurous Training. They undertook everything from mountain biking and rock climbing to white water rafting and gorge jumping. 12 lucky individuals were also selected by lottery for a once in a lifetime chance to climb up Mt Kenya. This was a demanding challenge over 6 days. Little did anyone realise that the top of Mt Kenya, Point Lenana, was over 3 times the height of Ben Nevis. On summiting the Squadron flag was quickly unravelled, and everyone tried to look warm as the pictures were taken. In the next few months, all the squadrons will be getting ready for the busy year we have ahead. Each Squadron in turn will head out to Canada supporting a different battle group. This will be the culmination of all the hard work and training they have put in over the past year.

Regimental Round-Up 1 Armoured Medical Regiment (1AMR) have had a very busy run into Christmas leave with a number of exercises, commitments and very emotional battlefield study period. 1AMR managed to host a Word War 2 veteran, Mr Arthur Davies, who was a Medic who landed on Gold beach on D-Day. This was the first time Arthur had retuned to Gold Beach in over 71 years. A number of the Officers, Warrant Officers and SNCOs of 1AMR spent 4 days conducting a battlefield study and Staff Ride in various locations throughout Normandy in France. Then, of course the Christmas period social occasions and traditions kicked in; from the Soldiers Christmas lunch to Gunfire and the annual Commanding Officer’s (CO’s) fancy dress fun run were well attended.

The 1 AMR Officers were closely defeated by the Warrant Officers and Sergeants in the CO’s Christmas football competition. It was a very hard fought game however, the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess prevailed to take the cup for this year. A re-match has already been planned. The CO’s address was well received with a number of the Regiment’s personnel being congratulated on their efforts in the sporting arena, Adventuress Training and work commitments. This was firmly shown when 31 of the Regiment’s Privates were provisionally selected for promotion to LCpl. The Children of 1 AMR also had a great time with a fancy dress Christmas party. Lots of activities and entertainment kept them happy as did the appearance of Farther Christmas to hand out early Christmas presents. The New Year brings a new tempo, as 1 AMR move firmly into their training year. This will see the Regiment on a number of local and overseas exercises. Coupled with this, there will also be the required medical, driver, communication and equipment training to complete. This will enable the Regiment to be validated later in the year for operational commitments in 2017. A busy year is in the making already!

Find us on Facebook - The Queen’s Royal Hussars On a cold Saturday morning on the 14th November selected representatives from D squadron departed Athlone Barracks at 08:30 and travelled to the Shuzenpatz where Kamper Kompanie our twinned Company of the Schutzen are located. As seven black pig t-shirts arrived at the gates of Kamper Kompanie , it became apparent that we did not know what the morning would bring. What was apparent though was the amount of activity within the park grounds. Members of the general public were already busy in large groups clearing all the fallen autumn leaves that now covered the grounds. We were soon met by a very enthusiastic Bernd Zengerling, who is the Sergeant Major of Kamper Kompanie. After a short introduction and brief on what was expected of us, equipment such as brooms, rakes, bin bags and wheel barrows were distributed between us. Once this was done we split down into two groups and went to join members of the public in clearing the leaf covered park. To Tpr Poole’s amazement the task given to us wasn’t at all dull as once thought and it was nice to work with members of the public who we normally have little or no contact with. After two hours of leaf clearing the park was finally looking much better and the vast majority of the leaves were now gone. A group photo was taken with all the people who took part in the task. After this we were then invited to have lunch and were also presented with medals. The atmosphere at the lunch demonstrated how close and strong the local community of Paderborn really is. What better way to show a coming together of a local community than celebrating it in traditional German style with a few glasses of beer. To Tpr Gaff’s and Tpr Wallbanks amazement big pint glasses were given to us and once empty were very quickly refilled. A big thank you must go out to Sgt Barber and Bernd for keeping spirits high throughout the day and also the local Paderborn community for making D Sqn feel welcome.

1st military working dog regiment

Canine Dualthon Competition Military working dogs and their handlers from 102 and 105 Squadron, 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, took part in a canine biathlon competition around Sennelager training area. The competition provided the 36 handlers and their dogs with an opportunity to demonstrate their combined fitness levels, the handler’s control and the dog’s willingness to follow the handler as they undertook a number of demanding stands and tasks. Over the 7km course, the teams had to tackle an obstacle course, an agility test and a specialised canine task - either a search or protection exercise dependent on the dog’s trained role. The soldiers were evaluated on their marksmanship on the range, plus undertake a 300m run along a freezing river. For Lance Corporal Chris Lush the river challenge for him and Charlie, a springer spaniel, was by far the hardest thing, “It was really tough, the cold was biting, both of us did not enjoy it much and you knew then you were going to remain wet for the rest of the course. However, it was a good physical test for us both, helps maintain our teamwork and overall it was good fun.” Chris who deployed with Charlie to Afghanistan added that competitions like this are really valuable as you never know when these skills will be called upon and it helps keep that bond between you and the dog.
