tarting a business is what many people dream of, but most don’t have to wait 20 years for the dream to become a reality. In fact, many never get to live their dreams. But, as they say, patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait - which was exactly the case for Carol Rawson, director of Suit the City While working in London in the late 1980s, Carol wanted to be her own boss. As a woman facing the ever present glass ceiling, she felt well and truly omitted from the ‘Old Boy’s Club’. The ‘boys’ all played golf and dressed in the corporate uniform of dark suit and white shirt, and when Carol received instructions from her employer about ‘how to dress for work’ in a dark suit, white shirt, dark socks and sober tie, she sent the instructions back with one question: do you want me to look like an escapee from St Trinian’s?

Thus began the search for an image that was professional, yet feminine, business-like, yet with a nod to fashion. After all, dressing like a man was never the goal. Disappointment when shopping was guaranteed - clothes didn’t fit, they were made out of cheap fabrics and just didn’t convey the right image. What came out of Carol’s experience was an idea for beautiful garments that were made to measure, which finally became Suit the City. So a backer was sought and the search for premises began. Unfortunately, the backer pulled out and the idea was temporarily shelved. The concept was brought down from the shelf several times during the next 10 years, with successive problems being encountered and various difficulties jeopardising progress. Finally, in 2006 Carol employed Sallie Belton, a student at Oxford Brookes

The Value of Intellectual Property Did you know, investment in UK businesses protected by Intellectual Property Rights is now worth around £65 Billion per year1? Also, investment by businesses to protect their IP using patents, trademarks, designs and copyright has more than doubled since 19901. This highlights the importance of understanding how a business can and will benefit from IP. There are four main types of IP – which we manage at the Intellectual Property Office (IPO – part of the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills). 1. Patents protect new inventions and covers how things work, what they do, how they do it, what they are made of and how they are made. It gives the owner the right to prevent others from making, using, importing or selling the invention without permission.

3. Registered Designs are a legal right which protects the overall visual appearance of a product in the country or countries you register it. The visual features that form the design include such things as the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture, materials and the ornamentation of the product which give it a unique appearance. 4. Copyright protects many types of work, from music and lyrics to photographs and knitting patterns. Many people think of IP only in relation to inventions and patents, and as a consequence, are unaware of the potential commercial benefits and IP asset protection that can come from registering Trade Marks, Designs and managing their Copyright.

2. Trade marks are a sign (badge of origin) which can distinguish your goods and services from those of your competitors (you may refer to your trade mark as your "brand"). It can be for example words, logos or a combination of both.
