2012-13 Friar Outlook The Defense: Returning 6; Lost 2, Newcomers 2

Of the six returning defensemen, four are upperclassmen who will look to guide Defense (Career Stats) the two newcomers. Returning to the Friar defensive squad is perhaps one of the Jessica Cohen, Sr. (106 GP, 12-21-33) most dynamic of the upperclassman, senior Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska,). The Emily Groth, Sr. (80 GP, 1-4-5) natural forward moved to defense midway through last season to spell a banged-up Suzie Lundeen, So. (20 GP, 0-1-1) blue line corps. She finished with a rating of +11. Cohen will be joined by senior Rebecca Morse, Jr. (70 GP, 8-22-30) Emily Groth (Monona, Wis.), who made a very successful switch back to her natural Maggie Pendleton, Jr. (71 GP, 3-11-14) defense position after two seasons on the wing. Victoria Virtue, So. (37 GP, 0-3-3) The Friars return All-Rookie selection Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.), who Lexi Romanchuk, Fr. led the team with a plus/minus rating of +14 in 2011-12. Morse’s junior classmate Lexi Slattery, Fr. Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.) enjoyed a breakout season in 2011-2012. She was second on the team with a +13 rating, tallied a career best in points with three goals and nine assists and starred during a five-game point streak. Representing the sophomore class is Victoria Virtue (Walpole, Mass.) and Suzie Lundeen (Minneapolis, Minn.). Virtue was pressed into significant minutes as a freshman and the former Winchendon School star responded with consistently strong play. Lundeen showed versatility while being moved to fill roles of injured players at both defense and offense during her freshman season. Two more freshmen with National Development Camp backgrounds fill out the corps. Lexi Slattery (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) are both expected to make immediate impacts at both ends of the ice.

Junior Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.) posted a 3-1-2 record in the 2011-2012 Allie Morse, Fr. season and earned Hockey East Goaltender of the Week honors on January 11th, 2012. Freshman Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.), a National Merit Scholar at Lawrenceville Academy, performed exceptionally on the Lawrenceville ice, leading the squad to the 2012 championship. Rounding out the trio is Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.), an invitee to USA Hockey’s prestigious Warren Strelow National Team Goaltending Camp this past summer.
