BRISBANE’S CUB SCOUTS’ EP Paradise has hit the iTunes store, delivering five new slices of pop including the singles Paradise and Pool! The band is currently preparing for their show at BIGSOUND and extensive national tour with Jinja Safari through September and October. The EP was created with producer John Castle, who also worked with the band on their previous EP, which spawned a number of alternative hit singles, including “Told You So” and “Evie”. The record also reached the top 20 of the CMJ Charts in the States and scored them a Queensland Music Award for Song of the Year for Do You Hear. That success was the springboard the band needed to attack overseas, with successful shows at the recent Great Escape festival in the UK, where one of the UK’s leading agents, Steve Strange, at X-Ray touring (agent for Coldplay, Green Day, Queens of the Stone Age), joined their growing industry team. Their aim is now to provide New Zealand’s Paralympic Sailors with the same reputation and position on the world stage as other New Zealand sailors, such as Neville Crichton, who, as Executive Chairman of Great Wall in New Zealand and Australia is providing support for the Kiwi Gold Sailing team and who is one of the country’s leading sailors. David and Rick want to use their bid to enter the Paralympic Games to raise the awareness of Sailability, the programme for disabled sailors, to make the Sonar yacht class more available across New Zealand and, from this, use other classes such as the 2.4 and Skud for disabled sailing.

To achieve this, David and Rick take their Great Wall sponsored Sonar yacht around the world in the build-up to the 2016 Paralympic Games in September 2016, starting with the Sonar World Championships in Ireland at the end of August, before competing in the USA less than a month later. The pair will then return to New Zealand for training in Wanaka, prior to a major regatta in Australia in December. A similar calendar of events in 2014 and 2015 will keep the team busy right up to Brazil 2016. “We are committed to pursuing our goal and we are competing with the hope that others will be inspired to take up sailing,” says David Barnes. “Our message is to never give up on your dreams and to keep believing in a brighter future.” www.greatwallauto.co.nz

THE DATSUN GO has signalled the return of the Datsun brand to the marketplace. Datsun is the third brand for the Nissan Motor Company along with the company’s Nissan and Infiniti brands. The car will be the first of several Datsun models that will be launched later in 2014 in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa. Datsun models will be individually developed for different markets, but the concept will follow a common inspiration. The five-door, front-wheel drive hatchback will come with a 1.2 litre engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. With comparatively compact body dimensions, the car is spacious inside thanks to a wide stance and large wheelbase and offers ample headroom and an expanded front seating configuration. Nissan says the GO is aimed at families, providing comfort to five occupants and agility in congested traffic. The new car’s name is inspired by the first Datsun, the DAT-GO, launched almost a century ago in Japan. Back then the cars brought mobility to people who had never dreamed of car ownership before. Nissan hopes the reignited Datsun brand and the Datsun GO will bring a similar combination of aspiration and trustworthiness.

While Nissan Motor’s Global design center in Japan was responsible for the Datsun GO styling, R&D and engineering development for the project were entrusted to local engineering resources and suppliers to ensure the product would suit local market conditions, preferences, tastes and needs, and would be accessible in terms of price and supply. Datsun GO will be produced at one of the newest Renault-Nissan Alliance factories at Oragadam, in Chennai.

THE NUMBER ONE rated junior driver in North America, Matthew Brabham, has scored his ninth win of the year, giving him the all-time record for the most wins in a season for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. Brabham claimed the record after winning both races in this month’s Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Mid Ohio. After a difficult previous race week end at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park circuit in Ontario, Canada, the third generation driver was determined to get back to his winning ways at the picturesque Mid Ohio track. After being fastest in practice Brabham qualified his Mazdaspeed AFS Racing Andretti Autosport #83 on pole in treacherous wet conditions. The track was completely dry for the first race and with a good start, Brabham led the field through the first corner. A dominate drive for the rest of the race saw Brabham take the win, despite a pace car intervention that bunched the field for a 5-lap sprint to the end. Shelby Blackstock’s second place gave Andretti Autosport a 1- 2 finish. “Canada was definitely a tough weekend for us and it is always good to bounce back and we did that in this race,” said Matthew.

“I am really pleased for the team. It has been a great weekend for us. We were fast straight out of the box. We had to put the car back together after that last race (at Canada) and we had no issues with it at all. The team has been working so hard all year and I can’t thank them enough. Race two again saw Brabham on pole, but a fast starting Diego Ferreira squeezed around Brabham into the first corner. Ferreira opened up a gap in the first few laps as Matthew had to fend off the chasing pack, but as the race settled down he began to reel in the leader. However getting past the Venezuelan proved difficult, and just when it seemed Brabham had to be happy with second place, an accident that covered the track in oil just in front of the leaders, sent Ferreira off the road and had Brabham fighting to keep control of his car. The pace car came out and due to the race running over the time limit, Brabham was awarded his record setting ninth victory. “I’ll take a win if I can, but I think, definitely, that was Diego’s race. He led from the start and his car was really quick - I was really struggling to stay with him there. If it wasn’t for the oil he probably would have won that race.” Brabham holds a 65 point lead in the championship.

This delightful children’s area will see the return of free art classes with Petit Atelier, which proved a huge hit for kids at last year’s festival. An Elmer the elephant mural will overlook the animal farm, lavender-scented play dough and French story time. The piece de resistance will be Marie Antoinette’s LET THEM EAT CAKE! competition where one lucky winner and a guest, will be transported to Paris with return tickets flying Qatar airways, the world’s number one airline. The grand prize also includes lunch and macaroons at the famous Laduree on the Champs Elysees, then going on to explore France with a TGV rail pass. THE FIRST LONGINES Ladies Awards ceremony recently took place on the eve of the Prix de Diane Longines, in the beautiful surroundings of the castle of Chantilly, France. Longines presented prestigious prizes to reward, “The exceptional commitment of women in the equestrian world”. With these prizes, the Swiss watch brand sought to highlight the elegance of careers dedicated to the equine cause. Longines’ passion for

equestrian sport dates back to 1878, when it produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. As early as 1881, the brand was present on racetracks and in 1926 the brand was timekeeper of a showjumping event for the first time. Today Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports includes flat racing, show-jumping and endurance competitions. Sophie Thalmann received an award for promoting the equestrian world through arts and media. The ceremony was followed by a gala dinner inside the gallery of painting in the Château de Chantilly. As the official partner of some of the most prestigious flat races in the world, the famous Swiss watchmaker has created a new collection, Conquest Classic, suitable for wearing in all the excitement of the winner’s enclosure at prestigious racecourses. Set with 30 diamonds, the official watch of the Prix de Diane Longines is a marriage of steel and rose gold and features a white mother-of-pearl dial with diamond indices. CARA DELEVIGNE RECENTLY met with Prince Charles and had him in in fits of laughter, it is said, that she was explaining what her tattoos were and where they were and then asked the Prince if he had any tattoos. The meeting took place at The Animal Ball, hosted by charity ‘The Elephant Family’ at Lancaster House in London. Cara, who is the current face of Burberry Body Tender fragrance, and good pals with Rihanna and Rita Ora, attended the event that has so far raised £600,000 for conservation projects across Asia, including a project to secure a habitat corridor in Assam, India - a lifeline for over 1,500 endangered Asian elephants. Naturally, Cara chose to wear Burberry to the event and looked absolutely divine.

AUSTRALIAN TICKET AND packaging company, Showbiz International, has joined forces with the Expedia group, one of the world’s leading online travel companies to create one an online ticket and accommodation packaging service. Showbiz Stay & See has relaunched with an all new ticket and packaging service in Australia that delivers Showbiz’s national range of real-time, live theatre and event tickets, combined with best in-market hotel rates across a full range of hotel products and shows, up to the week of performance. Previously, most accommodation allocations had to be released many weeks before each show’s performance date, which made it difficult for customers with short lead times to book a complete show and accommodation package. With the new Showbiz Stay & See online experience, customers will have access to close to 2500 hotels within the Expedia system, with hotels prematched to the venue location and

complemented by TripAdvisor ratings. Customers have the option of resorting based on price, popularity, hotel class, or can perform their own individual search. Showbiz Stay & See bookings can also be combined with Showbiz’s many partner restaurants near to the hotel or venue to ensure a complete, great value, short-break experience - all via one easy transaction on Showbiz.com.au. The partnership with Expedia will ensure that Showbiz can offer customers the best online hotel rates, which will be backed up by the new Showbiz Stay & See price guarantee. Under the guarantee, Showbiz will commit to refunding the difference if customers find a lower comparable online hotel room rate, and will include a $50 Showbiz Ticket Cash voucher towards their next purchase. The new enhanced website coincides with the announcement of the blockbuster Baz Lurhmann’s Strictly Ballroom The Musical, which will be staged at the Sydney Lyric

Theatre from early 2014. Like the Melbourne-only King Kong, the Sydney season of Strictly Ballroom is expected to generate a vast amount of interstate and international interest that will require significant accommodation inventory.

A world shared IN THIS EDITION of prodijee we are very pleased to bring you the inspirational story of Leif Cocks, a man of vision and compassion who has dedicated his life to saving the orang-utan from extinction. As you will see from our story, which begins on page ??, the orang-utan’s existence is under threat due to its declining habitat, resulting from the world’s seemingly insatiable appetite for palm oil and the willingness of inscrutable people in supplying that demand, regardless of the horrendous environmental consequences. Some people may find it strange that we cover such a story given that many of the products featured in prodijee contain palm oil. But we are more than pleased to present the other side of the story, and we see no contradiction or hypocrisy in doing so. While we want to see the orang-utans - and elephants, tigers and any other animal facing territorial ruin - free from the threat of environmental devastation, you won’t find us bashing consumerism or capitalism, either. Rather, by highlighting the animals’ plight, and Leif’s great work, we’d like to think we can inspire people who are smart enough and compassionate enough, to develop solutions whereby products can continue to be made without wiping out vital animal habitat. We may be wide-eyed optimists, but we believe consumerism and animal liberation can live in harmony - it just requires the will of us all to do so. DARREN HOUSE WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

CANON HAS UNVEILED a new addition to the enthusiast range of its renowned EOS series – the EOS 70D digital SLR camera. Replacing the popular EOS 60D and sitting above the EOS 700D, the EOS 70D features with wireless sharing functionality. In a DSLR world first, Canon’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides swift AF performance when shooting in Live View mode and smooth accurate focus for Full HD movies. Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes it easy for users to take their next step with movies, enabling them to keep moving subjects in sharp focus and create professional-looking pullfocus effects. The technology uses advanced CMOS architecture, allowing two photodiodes to be mounted within each pixel, both of which can be read independently to achieve autofocus, or together for image capture, with maximum image quality at all times. An advanced AF system for stills includes 19 cross-type AF points spread across the frame, providing high-speed, accurate AF - ideal for tracking sports and wildlife subjects as they move within the frame. The AF system is customisable, allowing photographers to adapt to the subject they are shooting. AF points can be used

individually, together in small groups, or as a wide active area for more unpredictable subjects. A dedicated AF area selection button, positioned conveniently next to the shutter release, enables quick switching between modes, without having to take the camera away from the eye. The EOS 70D features a new 20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, designed and manufactured by Canon. Paired with the 14-bit DIGIC 5+ processor and 19-point all cross-type AF System, the EOS 70D captures incredible, full resolution images at up to 7 frames per second for a continuous burst of up to 65 JPEG or 16 RAW images. Additionally, a native ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) enables photographers to shoot in lower light conditions and use faster shutter speeds while retaining high image quality. The EOS 70D’s powerful specifications are packed into an expertly-engineered body designed for comfort and fast operation. The Intelligent Viewfinder, with 98 per cent frame coverage and 0.95x magnification, allows photographers to comfortably frame their images and visualise settings via the electronic overlay.

YOU DON’T NEED to go to the ‘big guys’ to get the biggest range, smaller companies can also offer ranges that cater for wide markets. Olga Tolkatcheva is not the first person to fall in love with fashion, but she has been lucky enough to make it her occupation. Originally from Russia, Olga had experienced 16 years within the Australian fashion industry, but grew increasingly frustrated, as a designer and graphic artist, with the practice of copying others’ designs and fighting with management over products that did not compare in fashionability, quality and price. Olga decided to start her own business, Eclipse Fashion Bags, producing fashionable, quality products, following her own creative direction. “It was a difficult decision. I was financially secure working, but creatively unfulfilled. To start on my own meant I had to come out of my comfort zone and learn the many skills I needed as I went. I started the business officially in December 2012,” said Olga. Utilising all her previous skills and experiences, which included being a leather goods and footwear designer, she decided to produce leather handbags based on her own designs. “I love working with natural leather - the look, the texture, and the smell - very inspiring. Natural leather makes for long lasting, good quality, products and it’s much more environmentally friendly compared to manmade materials.” Influenced by world trends, Olga makes sure her accessories work well with mainstream outerwear. She feels it is a huge advantage that fashion has become very democratic lately, allowing for different directions. “I am inspired by leather textures and colour. I start with the sketch and product specification and send them to my suppliers who make up the samples. I am very particular about the quality of product. “I produce only small quantities WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

of each style - less than 50 units, keeping them exclusive. I resent the mainstream industry price structure, the race for the bigger margins. The retailers have huge mark ups to cover their overheads, real estate and logistics expenses. As a sole trader, I don’t have the same excesses and it helps to keep my prices down. I would prefer to sell the product faster and move on to the next design - concentrate on the creative side.” Olga believes that her product has the best combination of unique design, price and quality, and tries to engage potential customers in the design process through her Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Eclipse.fashion. bags http://eclipsefashionbags.com

FORTY IS THE new 30 and 60 is the new 50. Helping you look as good as you feel, Natio’s new age defying Renew skincare helps reduce lines and wrinkles by encouraging cell renewal and collagen production As you enter your 40s, 50s or 60s, the skin’s natural resilience and regenerative processes steadily abate. A hard working rejuvenator, yet gentle enough for everyday use, the potent Plant Peptide Complex has been incorporated throughout the Renew range. As the skin matures, its natural protection against moisture loss deteriorates. Hormonal changes mean sebum production and levels of hyaluronan reduce, limiting the skin’s ability to retain moisture. To counteract this, Natio Renew features plant derived Hyaluronate. Said to be the most hydrating ingredient known to science, Hyaluronate holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water and helps plump and smooth skin. For extra moisture, Renew also contains Moringa Butter. Derived from the seeds of ‘The Miracle Tree’, and containing Vitamins A and C it is proven to increase hydration, help maintain suppleness and prevent moisture loss.

Free from parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, artificial colours and fragrances, the Renew range includes: Gentle Toning Facial Cleanser – RRP $18.95 Smoothing Serum – RRP $26.95 CC Day Cream SPF 15 – RRP $24.95 Roll on Eye Serum – RRP $19.95

THE COAT ROUTE: LUXURY AND OBSESSION ON THE TRAIL OF A $50,000 COAT

IT’S THE BOOK idea every selfrespecting fashion scribe will be kicking themselves for not thinking of first: The Coat Route: Luxury and Obsession on the trail of a $50,000 coat, sees writer, Meg Lukens Noonan, on a worldwide odyssey, tracing the provenance of a tailoring masterpiece. John Cutler, the fourth generation cutter of JH Cutler, established in Sydney in 1884 and his pure vicuna overcoat, totally made by hand for a client in Canada in 2005, is at the heart of the story. In order to ‘piece together’ this bespoke rarity, Lukens Noonan travels to Peru to witness an Incastyle chaku, the traditional sheering of vicuna, a camelid that almost became extinct by the 1970s and WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

whose survival is one of the world’s great conservation stories. Next the author visits lionesque fashion powerhouse, Stefano Ricci in Florence, to trace the coat’s silk lining, which leads her to the maestro’s weaving works in Como. Lukens Noonan then travels to Paris and the House of Dormeuil, the famous fabric merchant where Cutler worked in the 1960s, and from whom, in 1984, he purchased three lengths of the then extremely rare fabric as his superannuation, waiting patiently for 30 years for the right customer to arrive. Next stop: northern England and the dilapidated mills of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire where the overcoat’s vicuna fabric was probably woven (it is not known by which weaver), then to Halesowen in the West Midlands and James Grove & Sons, (who has since ceased trading) the makers of the coat’s Indian water buffalo buttons. In Sydney, John Cutler confounds the author with his eccentric dress sense and entertaining array of characterful customers who will soon find themselves without their beloved aging tailor. In this city she also drops in on John Thompson, master engraver (of Prince Charles’ signet ring,

and Princess Diana’s wedding invitations) who handmade the overcoat’s gold engraved plaque and chain. Finally Lukens Noonan ‘meets’ the overcoat and its owner in Vancouver. That encounter, and the globetrotting travels that unravelled the overcoat’s origins, change her. She wonders aloud about the future of bespoke and asks, too late it seems, if handmade could be the antidote to the world’s lust for cheap fast fashion and the high cost it extracts: the environmental tragedy of clogging landfill with synthetic crap that only last month was ‘the thing’, to the unfortunates who crank out these creations in atrocious conditions for a dollar a day, and to the immanent loss of a handmade tradition that can trace its roots down through the ages. The Coat Route is a brilliant story compellingly told through the eyes of a tailoring novice.

PHYTOMER’S SECRECT INGREDIENT DETOXIFIES AND REVITALIZES THE EPIDERMIS IF YOU ARE looking for a Father’s Day gift that will delight both him and you then do as we did and take a look at PHYTOMER. PHYTOMER is an independentlyowned family business that commenced operations in 1972 and is currently run by the founder’s son. The company is based in the heart of the marine environment of the French cultural region of Brittany, with its office at Saint Malo and its research and production site based in the bay of Mont SaintMichel. Designed and created for the professional spa and beauty field, PHYTOMER products are available at 10,000 sales outlets located in 70 countries. It all started when Jean Gedouin, a young, visionary entrepreneur, became fascinated by scientific research that demonstrated the benefits of seawater to the skin. He created PHYTOMER, thus marking the invention of marine cosmetics - a new form of skin care that harnessed the incredible diversity of the marine world to produce effective beauty treatments and solutions. A key outcome of this development is the creation of the ingredient Oligomer, a sodiumreduced seawater concentrate. This worldwide exclusive product, which PHYTOMER says is protected by a manufacturing secret it has held for 40 years, is 100 per cent natural and contains all the active ingredients of seawater - notably 104 trace elements necessary for the balance and vitality of the skin. Present in most of PHYTOMER’s face and body products, Oligomer delivers remineralizing properties to strengthen the skin and recharge it with energy.

Armed with this knowledge, we couldn’t wait to try two products from the men’s range. GLOBAL PUR DETOXIFYING CLEANSING GEL - (150 ML) is described as an energizing, ultrafresh fragrance gel that cleanses and revives the skin. An astringent, it tightens dilated pores and is a perfect solution for oily skin. Its main ingredients are Marine Oxhylium, which oxygenates, detoxifies and revitalizes the epidermis and combats a dull complexion; and Marine Oligosaccharide, which has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and sebum reducing properties. Application is easy - simply use your fingertips to emulsify with water, massage on face, then rinse. Just be careful in avoiding the eye area.

GLOBAL PUR EXFOLIATING OXYGENATING FACE CARE - (50 ML). Exfoliating particles in this product gently eliminate dead cells and impurities, leaving the complexion refreshed. Thanks to the oxygenating properties of Marine Oxhylium, the epidermis is left purified. Radiance is restored to the complexion. PHYTOMER says this slightly foaming, creamy skincare product contains the perfect amount of exfoliating particles to gently eliminate dead cells and impurities. Used once or twice a week, preferably before shaving, you simply massage over damp skin and then rinse with warm water, again being careful to avoid the eye area. CONCLUSION I found using the combination of both products gently cleansed and revived my skin, providing a freshness I could both see and feel. For those who seek skin that is clean, purified and radiant, it’s hard to go past these PHYTOMER products.

IN MY MIND - GEORGI KAY Georgi Kay’s In my Mind is a beautiful, hypnotic song, which I loved. Her voice is deep and seductive and for the entirety of the song, she held my attention. The song sounds quite sad, with a melancholy tone and its repetitive nature made it feel as though it was never going to end.

WASTE - SURES Waste is dreamy and super chilled. Jonas Nicholl’s vocals remind me of the artist, Lior, as both sing soulful songs that tell a story. The song opens with the lyrics, “Don’t know what to do but I can tell that you’ve been wasting my time”, showing Jona’s anger. This song is quite chilled until it breaks out into the chorus, where you really feel the band reaching out and trying to get their message across. You get a sense of the angst in the song as it slowly builds up reaching a crescendo. All-in-all this was a beautiful track, which won my heart. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

IN THE AISLE - VIOLENT SOHO This is the type of song you listen to when you’re mad, as it makes you want to throw your head back and forth and rock out. The beat and drums are fast, and in my opinion Luke Boerdam was shouting the lyrics instead of singing. This song wasn’t for me, however I did take a liking to the instrumentation. This Brisbane band attempted to revisit the old days of rock and roll and bring a little light to it, ensuring this genre of music, which was once a way of life, is not forgotten.

BANG BANG BANG - SAHARA BECK This is a very soft and soothing song, featuring Sahara’s country and delicate vocals. This up-andcoming artist/songwriter has shared the stage with The Cat Empire, John Butler Trio and the Living End. Her new song is catchy and an easy listen, sure to leave you with a smile on your face. Her voice sounds mature and brings great emotion and meaning behind the song.

BY VITA CARBONE

PARADISE - CUB SCOUTS Paradise by Cub Scouts is high energy and a great indie-pop song. The beat and instruments are upbeat, however the actual notes are soft, reaching some very high pitches. This group is slowly gaining recognition in the Australian music industry, featuring regularly on music stations like Triple J and 2day FM. This song is a crowd pleaser, as it’s the type of song that could be played at any occasion.

YOU ARE NEW - THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPELTON This song begins with a soft guitar playing, and then opens with mesmerising vocals drawing you in. This song sounds angelic, though the album Rookie touches on different ideas and concepts behind relationships. I feel that You are New is the strongest song on the album. It tells a story and is adventurous and captures the singer’s enthusiasm and youth.

ario Puzo wrote the perfect analogy but Francis Ford Coppola directed one of the best scenes in movie history (The Godfather). You might be a little confused and think that this is a movie review but stay with me folks. As ‘The Godfather’ of the silver screen today, Al Pacino, said, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” Every time I come to Sydney, its luxury harbourside strip of food fantasy keeps pulling me back in to a point where I start acting like a kid in a candy store. As I pull up to that ever-so-chic Oriental temple of spice, and exotic world of Modern Asian food at China Doll restaurant on Woolloomooloo Wharf, the aroma I get from just walking down the promenade is awesome - it gives me that Silk Road feel of adventure, without even having entered the building or tasting a silky morsel of chef, Frank Shek’s, sexy food. I am greeted at the door by managing partners, Josh Dunne and Peter Curcuruto, who run this establishment like an orchestrated Bellagio heist in Ocean’s Eleven. With effortless precision and savvy style, I get whisked away to my table, with Peter signaling the bar for my whiskey and rhubarb sour, straight up in a martini glass. It is a slight twist from my regular whiskey sour; these guys make some of the best cocktails I have ever had. Dumplings, I have eaten all over the world, but let me give you the good oil on these little babies, they are seriously off the hook. Holy cow, I just wanted to marry the dumpling chef. I seriously hope she is hot as we are going to have a very happy life together.

After my marriage proposal to the dumpling chef, I buckled down for some of chef Skeh’s signature dishes - the crispy pork belly with chilli caramel and nam pla phrik sauce, the NZ whole Snapper with ginger and shallots and the ever-sosexy and tasty tea smoked duck in a silky tamarind and plum sauce with pineapple bits. This was followed by the superb barbeque pork and prawn fried rice with huge slices of roasted glazed pork, shrimp and lots of other tasty surprises. From my initial booking call to the follow up confirmation from hostess, Evette, and Jamie and Solange making sure that all is in line for my Silk Road experience, I am treated to a very VIP finish to the total dining experience at China Doll. haven, with its view of the mega rich abodes and yachts on Sydney harbor, whilst eating one of the most amazing Asian feasts I have ever had anywhere in the world, was just getting me all warm and fuzzy for the ‘piece de resistance’ – dessert - and of course my shakerato finale… Josh had mentioned in passing that the new desserts were absolutely the bomb, so in arrives black sticky rice with fresh mango, a rich luscious coconut sago with passion fruit sauce and a new sexy heavenly chocolate mousse cake on a biscuit crumble with traditional French ginger macaroons… ‘Hello’… they had me at coconut sago, but just to tip me over the edge, up comes a rich, shiny bowl of the sexiest, and I mean ‘Heidi Klum Sexy’ (you all know by now I am in love with Heidi if you read my column regularly) of pure chocolate sorbet heaven… OMG! Now I hope that the dumpling and dessert chef are the same person or I am really in major trouble. This harbour side dining was a real treat and as I sat there sipping my cafe shakerato, I had to pinch myself, as it just doesn’t get any better than this...

reality bites A

h, the ostensible beauty of choice. Like choosing when to heed the call of motherhood for those who hear its Siren’s call. Well, to those women who believe that we can have it all when we choose, I say… biology, baby, biology! Let me explain. My biological children (I have an older child to whom I did not give birth… but this is fodder for another column), are the product of my second marriage. Given that I was not a child bride when I said, “I do” to my first husband, perceptive readers will understand that I bred later in life. My daughter took two months and two bottles of wine to conceive. In December 2003, she came in to the world, altering the universe for her father and myself forever… and for good… for the most part. Our darling daughter was such a blessing and her entry in to the world so relatively easy (although I never glowed during pregnancy— instead, I sweated, puked and swelled through gestation, but again, more about the bite of this reality later), that we immediately planned for a second and also a third biological blessing. But wait; biology does not know how far women have come or how loud we roar. In the fall of 2004, my love and I celebrated his 38th birthday with abandon… leading to a second pregnancy. Sadly, this second time was not a charm (unlike in marriage), and in the late fall I found myself at the business end of a suction instrument undergoing a D and C to abate any potential damage of a miscarriage, as my ob/gyn knew I intended to create and carry more kids. Worry, we did not. Foolishly so as it turns out. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

by Amy Sommer

It’s the 21st Century; women can have children whenever we darn well choose. Darwin, evolution – so 19th Century – or so we’d like to pretend. Sadly, there are the realities of human reproduction that affect when we can easily procreate. This is where I bring Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) in to the conversation. I pull out my soapbox and urge women over 30 years of

age, who even remotely approach the subject of children, to get theirs tested. Follicle Stimulating Hormone is present in men and women. In men it remains pretty constant and works to control sperm production. With women, it fluctuates throughout our menstrual cycles, increasing, as we grow closer to ovulation. The lower your FSH number (which is measured via a simple blood test), the more fertile you are; the less effort your body has to make to get an ovary to release an egg, the more of them there are in reserve. Turns out I have to amend my soapbox because there is an even better test women can take to ballpark their fertility. I learned this while in stirrups on my recent visit to gynecologist, Dr Theordric Blue

“Family planning requires information. Get a vial of your blood analyzed and figure out the truth of your fertility. Block out the feminist calls of my generation because you may not be able to have it all whenever you choose”

Hendrix. I had expected Dr Hendrix to give me a quick quotation regarding FSH so that I could wrap this piece up. It’s quite awkward to be in stirrups in the first place and really quite uncomfortable to have discover one’s inaccuracy when in them. Sigh. While FSH is a blood test and an indicator of fertility, there is a better blood test that can be done any time during a woman’s cycle. AMH, Anti-Mullerian Hormone, is produced in the ovarian follicles and testing for it can tell you how big your ovarian reserve is. In other words, by having a vial of blood drawn, you can find out roughly how many eggs you still have on your reproductive shelf. The quantity and quality of one’s eggs decreases as women age. Past performance is not indicative of future success, thus viewing my miscarriage as a minor speed bump was a mistake — one that my husband and I learned painfully as we began to actively try to conceive. We should’ve worried sooner but alas, we did not turn to IVF until 2006. I gave birth to my son in 2008… our children are 4.5 years apart… and there are only two. I am blessed to be able to use the word children – for many months, I was convinced that the singular

child would be my fate when discussing progeny. Yes, IVF worked but after two years of emotionally exhausting, financially draining and timeconsuming treatment. It should be avoided if at all possible, which is why I beseech you to take an AMH test. I should’ve had more blood work done sooner, which would’ve saved my husband and I many futile rolls in the hay (trust me, intercourse with a mission is just not as much fun), and might’ve enabled us to have a third biological child. And, before I get letters, adoption is an equally beautiful way to build a family – we, in fact, remain on a list to adopt a child from China – but if you want biological children, get your blood tested. Family planning requires information. Get a vial of your blood analyzed and figure out the truth of your fertility. Block out the feminist calls of my generation because you may not be able to have it all whenever you choose. AMH, ladies, AMH – get yours tested… NOW, if you’re over 30 years old and even thinking about having biological children. Really, it’s a simple blood test and one that will force a real conversation about family planning and save you immeasurable pain and expense

down the road regardless of your decision; it will be an active choice.

DRIVEN BY A NEED TO SUPPORT HER FAMILY AND THE KNOWLEDGE THAT ‘SEX SELLS’, MELBOURNE’S MARIE DELON CREATED MARQUIS DE SADE, A BUSINESS THAT CREATES EXQUISITE CORSETRY, LEATHER WEAR AND PVC CLOTHING. MAGNIFICENT WEDDING DRESSES WERE SOON ADDED TO THE RANGE, AND NOW THE BUSINESS ATTRACTS CUSTOMERS FROM ALL OVER AUSTRALIA.

D

onatien Alphonse François, Marquis of Sade was a French aristocrat, politician and writer, famous for his libertine sexuality. He is best known for his erotic novels, which combined philosophical discourse with pornography, often depicting sexual fantasies. The words sadism and sadist are said to be derived from his name. It was certainly a marvelous name for Marie Delon to use when she started her business in fetish wear. Stepping into the Ormond store in Melbourne’s south east, you could be forgiven if you thought you were stepping inside a Bedouin tent with lush fabric draped from the ceiling, but it’s more than a tent. The store houses the most magical of designs in high class fantasy and fetish wear. Magnificent corsetry, leather wear, PVC clothing, 17th and 18th century clothing with a touch of something different, a bit of erotica. Owner and designer, Marie, prides herself in having one of the only businesses of its kind, it’s specialty wear for those who are serious about their style.

Keen to create the future for her children that she had always wished for, Marie embraced her love of design to build a successful business. “I like anything that is different; I had two small children and I always loved design,” said Marie. “I always wanted to be a costume designer but theatre is very limited and also very seasonal. Being a single mother of two, after my

marriage broke down, I had to think of something that would give me work the whole time. I started doing a bit of forecasting and I could see the sex industry was growing and I wondered how I could position myself in that.” Having always been into fashion, Marie felt very frustrated when she had trouble translating her passion for her designs to pattern makers and sewers; it never turned out the

way she wanted. “I decided to go back to school, I was a pretty late starter and I remember it being really hard. I had to take the children to school in the morning, go to school, come home, pick them up, do their homework with them, do my homework, so for four years it was really tough. But my children were really supportive and I always knew I was doing something right for them. No one wants to be a single mother and I wanted to be able to send them to a school that I had originally planned for them, so that inspired me to be successful and give my children what I always had wanted for them. That was a big driving factor for me. “I was lucky, I had a passion for it and I was really good at it. I was a mature-age student (and) I knew what I wanted, rather than mucking around not knowing which direction I wanted to go in. So I just went there, did all the harder subjects, all PRODIJEE.COM

the dying arts like tailoring, couture, costume design, and I became really good at those. I have put all those techniques together and started this business.” Starting a business is never easy, but when you are a single mother of two young children, and you make fetish wear, it is even more difficult and Marie admits to having fears about what people would say. “I thought the kids would be told, ‘Your mum’s into bondage and she is this and that’ but it never really happened. Nobody really cared what I was doing and I couldn’t care less what other people thought, anyway.” In the beginning, Marie had difficulty getting models to parade her clothing, “Because people weren’t really sure what I was or what I was about, maybe they thought I was a dirty old perverted woman.” So, proactively, she started her own agency, going to clubs and

meeting people with a bit of attitude who were interested in her concepts. That agency now hosts 150 people from where she can draw different talents.

While all of Marie’s designs are in high demand, Marie admits to only seeing people by appointment. “I am very exclusive in what I do. People come from Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, everywhere. The thing with this product is that it’s not like a normal shop where you just walk in and want to try everything on. A lot of these garments take a lot of work and time to try on. I’ve got a really bad temper; if someone comes in and says they want to try on this, that and the other and then they just want to think about it… “So, by having the appointment system, if the person has made an appointment, they really want something so I don’t mind them trying on a lot of outfits until they get the right one. For me, this system works. We make to order, there aren’t many shops you can go into and say that you want something, but in a different colour, and take something away or put something on and make it your size. Marie sources her fabrics both locally and from overseas. “You need special corset strength fabric for a lot of the things I do, and the boning all comes from Germany. There is a really good quality German steel boning company where I get spiral steel for the structure of the outfits. It is more flexible in the garment, you can bend and it will spring back into shape. If you wear something tight, it gives you an amazing figure. “I use only the very best of fabrics, if you are going to do something, you may as well use the best. The PVC is also very good quality, there are different grades of it, but the one I use has got a really good stretch to it. You need super

excellent machines to sew it, as in most work, the better the tools are, the better the work is.” Corsets, which require a lot of technical skill to make, are Marie’s specialty. In addition to fetish and fantasy wear, she makes them for under wedding dresses. “What I really like about the corsets is that they are specially engineered to give you a really small waist and still be very comfortable. Everyone is different, so trying to fit a few people into the same corset just doesn’t work. Because you wear it so tightly and so close to you, the fit is the most important thing. It is really empowering, because once a girl puts a corset on, their attitude changes”, said Marie “I have one example of every style (in my shop) and then the customer can say I like this one, but I want it in that colour, and it will be custom fit and custom made. Everyone walks out of the shop very happy.” A great deal of Marie’s customers are brides-to-be, so Marie decided to also make wedding dresses to team with her corsets. “Girls who have big breasts normally couldn’t wear a strapless dress, so with a corset, it gives them security. The wedding dress then gets built around the corset. The dresses don’t have to have big straps and the girls can have exactly what they want, rather than what designers want to put them in. Ever since Marie launched her first collection, she wanted something with more energy and excitement than a normal, run-ofthe-mill catwalk show, so she WWW.PRODIJEE.COM PRODIJEE.COM

showcases her designs and ideas in a fun, fantasy filled and exciting way in theatrical performances. As choreographer for these shows, Marie displays her garments to the fullest extent with creativity and delight. “The idea is to show people how they can wear the clothes and make (the experience) fun, because,

before I came along, it was very dark and sordid. I just wanted to show people the lighter side of it and the fun side of it.” Marie’s creations have won national acclaim, with her costumes winning Best Sexy Fashion and the Australian Adult Industry awards for several consecutive years as well as featuring on covers of national and

international magazines. Marquis de Sade has gone from a small, struggling business run by a single mum to a nationally acclaimed range of designer wear and theatrical performances catering to a world where people are now more accepting and open to their sexuality. www.marquisdesade.com.au

ho’s that guy, I heard people whisper when he walked across the set of Active Shooter. That’s when I first met Andrey Ivchenko. He had just flown in from Toronto, was tired after two connecting flights, but looked sharp, confident and ready to dive into work. He reminded me of an action hero, the Shwarzenegger and Stallone type. He’s 6’3” and has the physique of Roman statue, but unlike most tough movie guys, Andrey is also a likable guy and talented actor. Staying in shape is essential for him because he also does his own stunts. The last few years have been fortunate for Andrey, but that hasn’t always been the case. “Dedication, persistence, hard work, and just keep following your dreams, those are the keys that can open any door” he says. Andrey was born in the Ukraine in a city called Kharkov. And like most kids growing up, he wanted to be an astronaut, doctor or engineer, but as time passed it became clear where his destiny would lie. He developed a passion to act. He enjoyed art and reading books, but his favorite pastime was watching movies. He didn’t just watch them; he memorized his favorite lines and actors’ names. Growing up in an artistic environment (his dad was an artist), Andrey witnessed how hard and competitive the entertainment business could be, which made him realize that he had to gain certain skills to become successful in the business. That’s why he didn’t waste time; he joined the school theatre, which was led by one of his literature teachers who also was an actress in a local theatre. He participated in every play and never missed a rehearsal. He took in as much experience and knowhow that WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

he could before he walked on to the big stage, Hollywood. At the end of the ‘90s he made the decision to leave the Ukraine, ending up in London, England, which is where he learned to speak English. In 2005 Andrey moved to Canada, it was there that he realized he had enough ability and training to expand his talents into the movie business.

He worked on several TV shows, such as Nikita, staring Maggie Q, Falling Skies (Noah Wyle, Will Patton), The Firm (Josh Lucas), XIII: The series, Warehouse 13, Cybergeddon (from creator of CSI, Anthony E. Zuiker), Transporter (Chris Vance), and feature films such as The Mountie (starring Canadian actor, George Buzza). While working in Vancouver, Andrey received a call from his agent, he booked the lead role in the movie, Freezer, alongside Dylan McDermott (The Campaign, The Practice, Olympus Has Fallen), and Peter Facinelli (Nurse Jackie, Twilight saga), and also Yulia Snigir (Good Day to Die Hard). The movie was directed by the talented director, Michael Salomon (The Abyss and Hard Rain). Andrey shared some behind the

scenes info with me about Freezer. One interesting fact was that the movie was filmed in an artificial industrial freezer built inside the studio. The cold air was pumped through two big pipes that were going from the freezer up to the roof top of the studio. The movie was shot in Alberta, Canada, in January, therefore the production didn’t lack cold air. The purpose for this set up was to make it look natural, even the steam coming out of actors’ mouths was real. The temperature inside

the studio was almost as cold as the temperature outside. Despite working long hours in the freezer, the cast had fun on the set. ‘Freezer’ is still in post-production, but hopefully it will be out before Christmas. I can’t wait to see it. Today Andrey is living in sunny LA, pursuing his career and building his acting resume with the help of his agent Marc Chancer (talent group, Origin). Andrey has only been here for a few months, but has already made serious progress. His star is just beginning to rise,

and we will definitely see him on the big screen sometime in the near future.

SYDNEY’S TASNEEM ROC BEGAN HER ACTING CAREER AT THE AGE OF 20 AS THANIA SAYA ON POPULAR TELEVISION SERIES, HEARTBREAK HIGH. SHE LATER APPEARED AS SKYE QUINN IN ABC DRAMA HEADSTART BEFORE RELOCATING TO THE UK, WHERE SHE APPEARED IN SKY TV SERIES

DREAM TEAM. TASNEEM LATER RETURNED TO AUSTRALIA AND APPEARED AS SEDUCTIVE PEOPLESMUGGLER, SUZY SUDIRO, ON HOME AND AWAY, AND IN THE SUPERNATURAL COMEDY, SPIRITED, AS SCHOOLTEACHER, VIOLA TAKE. HER ROLE OF PROTECTIVE WIFE AND MOTHER, AMINA MALIK, IN ACCLAIMED DRAMA MINISERIES EAST WEST 101 WAS REPRISED OVER THREE SEASONS AND SHE RECEIVED COMMENDATIONS FOR HER GUEST ROLE ON ABC LAW DRAMA CROWNIES AS VICTIM OF CRIME, TINA CHANG. MOST RECENTLY TASNEEM HAS PLAYED NURSE, OLIVIA SHAW, IN THE NEW JONATHAN SCHIFF PRODUCTION, REEF DOCTORS. BREAKING INTO A SESSION OF NET SURFING AND COFFEE, TASNEEM SPOKE TO DARREN HOUSE ABOUT HER REMARKABLE CAREER.

A LOT OF THE ROLES YOU PLAY ARE QUITE ‘MEATY’ - THE SORT OF ROLES THAT MOST ACTORS WOULD WANT TO PLAY? I’ve been lucky in that respect. I have had the opportunity to work on some really amazing productions, and you are right, they are pretty meaty. East West 101 was really topical and meaty in terms of exploring that Islamic and Western cross over, and on Crownies I played a victim of crime. It’s the kind of stuff that actors dream of. More recently I’ve been able to do some lighter things - Spirited was a bit comical, and on Kath and Kimderella I play a reporter. I’m a bit of a straight man on that, but it was also a bit quirky and lighthearted, so I’ve been able to touch on all of those different things. DO YOU ENJOY THE VARIETY? Yes, I do, definitely. It’s kind of funny because you can’t really predict what sort of roles you are going to have the opportunity to go for. At the very beginning, you hope for something meaty, you hope for

that big scene that will allow you to really let loose and have your moment, and then when you have had a couple of those, you really wish you could have something light

and happy, and it kind of pops up. With Reef Doctors, that was all light and even though we did have our dramatic moments, it was all very family orientated.

WHEN PLAYING EMOTIONALLY DEMANDING ROLES, DO YOU TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU OR DO YOU SWITCH OFF EASILY? My two heaviest roles would be on East West 101 and Crownies. East West, particularly in the third series, was quite harrowing. My character and Don Hany’s character, lose their son in the first episode. I don’t think I necessarily took that home with me, but it was definitely challenging. I do remember really wanting to do a good job with it, so when I was preparing for it, and on the day that we filmed it, I was definitely in that place and experiencing that loss as much as I could. Afterwards, I was very relieved to have had it done and know that I did a good job. I know that director, Peter Andrikidis, was very happy with what we had done and so were the producers, so I was quite happy with that. With Crownies as well, that was pretty tough being a victim of crime. Again, I don’t think I took it home with me, but around the time I was WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

doing it, it was very palpable, but it’s more of a relief to be able to let it go. I’ve been given some good advice in terms of being able to switch off from those kinds of scenes. I had a friend say that when she was putting on her costume, that’s when she puts on the role and when she takes the costume off, that’s when she lets the role go. It’s really good advice because if you bring home those emotions and heartbreak, it’s really disruptive. It’s as real as it can be, and it’s not healthy to hold onto that kind of emotion. AT THE OTHER END OF THE SCALE, WAS KATH AND KIMDERELLA AS CRAZY ON SET AS WHAT WE MIGHT IMAGINE? I was tickled pink to be working on that film. I was there for a couple of days filming my stuff down in Melbourne. I was in the green room and everyone on the cast was there, all the comedy greats in the same room and I was really excited to be there, it was a lot of fun. They are all really funny and it’s such a lighthearted, ridiculous story as well. It was just a lot of fun. DO YOU HAVE A PREFERENCE FOR FILM OR TV? I started in TV when I was working on Heartbreak High. I was quite young and so I feel a familiarity with that medium and I’m comfortable with it, but as time has gone on I’m getting more opportunities to work in film, which I am really enjoying. So, I go where the work is but I would like to continue to work in both. I would actually like to work more in film as time goes on, and I’m sure those opportunities will present themselves. Next month I have a couple of days on The Little Death, (Le Petite Mort– euphemism for orgasm) which is Josh Lawson’s new film. It’s a really funny comedy script that WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

looks at various levels of sexual perversion. It sounded a little bit risqué, and when I heard about it I was a bit… oooh, because it’s kind of a tricky one to deal with if it goes wrong. But I read the script and it was awesome. It’s really quirky and funny, and I think it will do really well. WORK FOR AN ACTOR CAN BE SCARCE. HOW DO YOU BALANCE THAT SCARCITY OF WORK AGAINST A ROLE THAT YOU THINK MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU? Early in your career you have to do the hard yards. You are doing short films and roles in films that you think that maybe you shouldn’t, but as I have gotten older and I understand myself a bit better and what I want to do, it’s easier for me to say no to an audition or a script. In Australia, I don’t think we can be all that picky, but as I’ve grown older I’ve been able to be more definitive about the sort of stuff I want to do. When I was younger, I always felt like I should do the job, should do the work because it was offered to me. I think most people go through the stage where they take on work just because it’s there. And then later on, you take on the work that you believe in. I don’t regret anything I’ve done, because you learn from every single role that you take and that’s really valuable.

to more than 150 countries. It’s yet to air in Germany - it was a German/Australian production - and I know that they are really excited about it over there. It will be really interesting to see how it goes overseas. It is very beautiful, featuring our iconic far north Australia and I think that it will do really well overseas. It’s a little bit of a Tourism Australia spot, it just looks beautiful. Again, I’m so grateful to be a part of that production. I’ve made friends for life on that show. We had such an awesome cast and working with Lisa (McCune) was great. She is so gracious and professional, and so good at her job. It was great, a really good show to work on. I know Jonathan Schiff, the producer, was very proud of the show too. He’s proud of all of the productions he has going at the

moment. I just saw him in LA and he has made a huge deal with Netflix for one of his shows, Mako Mermaids. He is going great guns at the moment. WERE THERE ANY CHALLENGES WITH THE LOCATIONS? No. For the first three weeks we were working in Port Douglas, that wasn’t challenging at all (laughs). It’s really a dream job because I worked a handful of days and they were out on an island in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, walking out in the water - that’s not a tough job to deal with. It was awesome. It was the first time I had been up to Far North Queensland and it was just beautiful, I really fell in love with it. The rest of the time we shot on the Gold Coast and the only challenging thing about that was that it was wet some of the time.

“My role in East West was quite harrowing. If you bring home those emotions and heartbreak, it’s really disruptive. It’s as real as it can be, and it’s not healthy to hold onto that kind of emotion”

YOUR LATEST PROJECT, REEF DOCTORS, WAS BUMPED ONTO TEN’S SECONDARY CHANNEL AFTER JUST ONE WEEK ON THE PRIME CHANNEL. THAT MUST HAVE BEEN TOUGH FOR YOU AND THE CAST? It was a long time coming - it took about a year after we finished shooting for it to come onto TV. I’m really proud of the show, it’s a beautiful show. I saw it all on DVD before it aired, and it looks beautiful. I think we did a really good job. I’m proud of what I did and I am really grateful for the opportunity of being in such a great production. Unfortunately, it’s been a really interesting experience to see that the show maybe hasn’t found its audience, despite how good I feel that it is. It’s been disappointing that (the audience hasn’t connected with it) the way that we hoped. But, that being said, it has sold WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

It was unpredictable in terms of the weather, but we would shoot in the studio and then on location up in The Hinterland. It was pretty awesome, to be honest. It wasn’t a tough gig at all. I would jump at the chance to work further on it if the opportunity comes up. WITH REALITY SHOWS GAINING INSTANT AUDIENCES, IT SEEMS DRAMAS ARE NOW UNDER PRESSURE TO FORM INSTANT CONNECTION BETWEEN CHARACTERS AND THE AUDIENCE. I think you are right, and I think you see it more so in America. This is my first experience of being in a show that has been moved so quickly. In America, they are more brutal in the way they cancel their shows. I understand why, the ratings are very important. To be honest, I think that where Reef Doctors is now - on Channel 11 at 6.30pm on a Saturday, is a much better home. It’s a light, family drama; it’s not a prime time show. I hope it has a chance to connect, like I said, I think that it’s a really good show, I really do. I know that my family watches it (laughs), hopefully there’s more people as well. HEARTBREAK HIGH WAS YOUR FIRST GIG? WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

I started working on Heartbreak High with a 50-worder, I was with an extras agency and I played a waitress who approached one of the main characters. The director, Jessica Hobbs, asked if I was auditioning for any other roles and I said no, and from there I was called in a number of times and auditioned for the role of Thania Sayer, a series regular. That was pretty magical going from being an extra to being in the series in a matter of months, it was pretty awesome. Heartbreak High was a

really good place for young actors because we were trained and we had quite intensive rehearsals. It was a bit of a dream job. From that show I have made friends for life as well, it’s pretty amazing. HOW DID YOU GET INTO ACTING? I was very shy as a child and a friend encouraged me to join the Australian Theatre for Young People, so I did some classes with them for a period of time. Apparently, I told my parents when I was 10 that I wanted to be an actress, but I

was very shy and embarrassed that I wanted to be an actress until it actually happened. AFTER HEARBREAK HIGH YOU WENT TO ENGLAND? I was there for a good 18 months. One of the interns in an agency was a fan of Heartbreak and everything all sort of fell into place and I got work. The main thing I did with them was working on a show called Dream Team. I played a professional tennis player (Shannon Eden-Childs), which was quite amusing seeing as I am not particularly sporty, not that you had to see me play tennis, thank God! It was fun working over there; I would love to go back. ARE YOU DOING ANYTHING TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN? My mum is from Scotland, so I have a British passport and therefore it’s very easy for me to go back to Britain and I have seriously considered it. I think it’s a decision an Australian actor has to make for their career - do you stay in your own country or do you give WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

it a go in LA or New York or the UK? That was one of the reasons I recently went to LA, to take some meetings and to get a better idea of the business over there and a sense of the city. Probably the next step is to go to LA for pilot season next year. What I am trying to do at the moment is to gather all the documentation for my O1 (visa). WHAT DID YOU THINK OF LOS ANGELES AS A PLACE TO LIVE? I really like it there. There are a lot of things that appeal to me about LA. I like their health culture, I am really into organic food and stuff like that, so if you are really fussy, like I am - like gluten free, organic there’s places for you everywhere in LA, I really liked the lifestyle there. There are also a lot of Australians. I have a lot of friends over there so I don’t really feel isolated or alone. For a period of time, I wouldn’t mind being there, definitely. Kristy (Best) and I spent the last couple of days of that trip in Venice (Beach) and it’s so nice there. Around the boardwalk is pretty hectic, but it’s really lovely around the shopping

district. I prefer being by the ocean as well. YOU HAVE A DOUBLE DEGREE IN ENGLISH AND ART HISTORY. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT WHEN YOU WERE HEADING DOWN THE ACTING PATH? When I left high school, I hadn’t told anyone that I wanted to be an actor. I managed to skew the subjects that I took towards performing arts

and film, so a lot of the art/history subjects I took were film orientated. Again, with English you get a lot of literature and plays and stuff like that, so it all worked toward my career choice. I do admit, art history is not the most vocational course I could have taken but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I’m probably never going to use it to get a job but I’m happy to have the degree, and I think my parents are happy as well. I think that there are things you are learning while you are doing your degree, like research skills. Hopefully it helped, in some way, hopefully those years weren’t wasted! (laughs) WHEN YOU’RE NOT DRINKING COFFEE AND SURFING THE NET, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO DO? That’s all I do! (laughs). I am pretty fitness focussed at the moment, so before I went away for Reef Doctors, I got a personal trainer because I was worried that they were going to get me into a bikini and I felt that I needed to get fit. That was one of the other benefits of being on the show, it started a fitness journey for me. I had never been in a gym in my life and now it’s one of the more regular things that I do. I probably go to the gym about four times a week and I work a lot on strength and weights. It’s been a really exciting thing for me to be able to see my body change through doing resistance training, it’s been really exciting. Another thing I am doing is writing. I am working with a friend on a pitch for a TV pilot. Doing a lot of staff meetings and plotting and planning occupies a lot of my time. I really enjoy doing that, my mum is

an author as well, it’s something I have always looked up to my mum for. She has done picture books and children’s books and is also breaking off into writing for young

adults. That has always been a part of my life as well. It’s something that I would really like to undertake with more energy and passion in the future.

TASNEEM’S THREE TIPS FOR ASPIRING YOUNG ACTORS 1. It is really important to invest in training. You can have good natural instincts and be a natural at something but that is only going to take you so far. To have training and technique will take you to that next level. You do it all your life, being a constant student is very important.

2. Have a good support network – that can be with friends inside the industry, but also make sure you have support with friends outside the industry. It’s not healthy to surround yourself with only actors; it’s good to have a perspective on life outside the industry. 3. Understand that it is a journey. I have friends that get very

disheartened when things aren’t happening as quickly as they think they should. It’s important to understand that when you are an actor, it’s important to find joy and inspiration wherever you are in your career and not to quit because it’s not happening fast. Keep going and have faith.

FAIRLADY ESTATE SHIRAZ 2009

To be honest, I had never heard of Fairlady Estate wines or for that matter, the Blackwood Valley Region, but I knew it was in good company when I discovered it was nestled near one (if not the) best winery haunts of mine – Margaret River. So how did this opportunity arise? Well a good friend bought this bottle and a story along to a casual evenings repast out our local pizzeria. The friend is an avid car enthusiast and also a proud owner of a great little classic convertible, a Datsun 2000 Sports roadster. It turns out he was at a car club get together at another great wine region – Mildura, when one of the other car owners presented him with this bottle of Shiraz from their own estate named after their cars alternate non de plume ‘Fairlady’. Well I have got to tell you, I had to jump in quick to get even a taste of this one as six glasses appeared very quickly and the whole bottle was immediately drained into the glasses and all consumed within a quarter of an hour. This is a great testament to a beautiful wine. This wine represented a leveled and skilled application of the Shiraz grapes and certainly did contain those earthy undertones the region is known for. The colour was deep and rich and the nose tempted the palate with those earthy fruit aromas. The taste was classic Shiraz but, to my liking, still young enough to exhibit the vibrancy of the fruit that characteristically has the edges knocked off over time. I really enjoyed this wine and will be seeking out other examples from this fine winery as well as others in the Blackwood Valley Region. ith all the stories we are told, it is often hard to tell what is fact and what is fiction. Here are some myths many of us have grown up with. MYTH 1: My skin will age like my mother’s.

by Christine Clais

REALITY: Not necessarily. About 70 per cent of the way your skin ages is due to how you care for it and your lifestyle. Biological ageing is only responsible for approximately 30 per cent of skin ageing. So, you really do have a say in how your skin is going to age.

REALITY: Not true. It is not mixing brands that may cause a skin reaction, but rather the mixing of various active ingredients present within these products. So, it is best to consult a skincare professional for advice.

MYTH 2: All skincare brands are the same.

MYTH 4: Picking at my pimples will make them disappear more quickly.

REALITY: Not true.

REALITY: Definitely not true!

Companies use various grades of ingredients in various concentrations. Cheaper products tend to contain ‘fillers’ that create bulk in the jar but do not have any effect on the skin. Unfortunately, a high price does not necessarily guarantee effectiveness of a skincare product, either. It is always best to focus on ingredients, their concentration and their effect on the skin rather than a mere brand name, so read labels!

The best way to get rid of a pimple

MYTH 3: You should only use one brand of skincare at any one time and not mix brands.

fast is to leave your skin alone! Every time you pick at a spot, you are delaying the natural healing process of your skin, increasing the risk of spreading the infection and

making the area look much worse. So, let your skin do the healing. MYTH 5: Sleeping is good for my skin. REALITY: True. Hence the expression, ‘get some beauty sleep’. In order to function well, our bodies need about eight hours of sleep every night. A lack of sleep can accelerate skin ageing, including wrinkling because of an increase in bodily inflammation due to our hormone levels being negatively affected.

can create serious damage to our precious collagen and elastin fibresskin proteins that are responsible for keeping our skin looking nice and young! UVB rays are shorter than UVA rays and can cause sunburn, wrinkles and sun spots. Both UVA and UVB may also cause skin cancer. Using a sunscreen during the sunny months is a must!

MYTH 6: Sun exposure is the main cause of premature skin ageing. REALITY: Absolutely! Although we need some sun to be healthy and feeling good (the sun is our primary source of Vitamin D, and it is needed for our body’s calcium absorption, so we have stronger bones), sun exposure damages our skin. UVA rays can penetrate deep into the dermis (the middle layer of our skin) and

A MAN WITH A HEART OF GOLD, A LOVE OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND ANIMALS, LEIF COCKS BELIEVES HIS GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE IS DEVELOPING THE ORANG-UTAN PROJECT FROM INCEPTION TO THE EFFECTIVE AND RESPECTED ORGANISATION THAT IT IS TODAY.

L

eif Cocks is founder and president of The Orang-utan Project (TOP), a not for profit organisation, supporting orang-utan conservation, rainforest protection, local community partnerships and the rehabilitation and reintroduction of displaced orangu-tans back to the wild, in order to save the two orang-utan species from extinction. He has worked hands on with, and for, orang-utans for more than 25 years, including the most successful breeding colony of orang-utans in the world. Leif has also conducted orang-utan rescues and been involved with the successful reintroduction of numerous orang-utans, including the first two successful zoo-born reintroductions. “TOP started when the old Australian chapter of Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) closed down,” said Leif. The president of OFI, Birute Galdikas, asked if I would take over the chapter. After consideration I said I would not want to, however, I agreed to start an orang-utan organisation in Australia that would help her good work as well as others, so I gathered a small group of volunteers and we started.”

”My relationship with orang-utans started when I was working with the big cats at Perth Zoo. When Charlie Broomfield, who had been the orang-utan keeper for the last 20 years retired, I was asked to take his place in the Primate Section. I started working with them and then discovered that not only did I like orang-utans, but also that they liked me. This allowed me to enter the enclosure with them and do many things that other keepers could not. So, I continued to be their keeper for 12 years and developed the understanding that orang-utans are sentient, intelligent ‘persons’ whose welfare and basic ‘rights’ can only be met by living free.” In respect to his professional, animal, human and financial management skills, Leif has been the longest-standing Australasian Species Management Program Committee Member; a QuarantineApproved Assessor; Zoo Husbandry Adviser; Zoo Accreditation Officer; UN GRASP in-country point of contact, an International Species Coordinator, International Studbook Keeper and Chair of a World Aquarium and Zoo Association global conservation program. Current positions include

- president: Wildlife Asia (www. wildlifeasia.or.au), president: International Elephant Project (www.elephant.org.au), President: International Tiger Project, Conservation Fund Manager: Silvery Gibbon Project (www.silvery.org.au). A small-population biologist and curator by trade; Leif has several academic qualifications, including a Master’s of Science studying orangutans. He lectures at universities, is a seasoned public speaker, supervises university students and has published several papers on orang-utans in peer reviewed journals. Leif is also author of the book, Orang-utans and their Battle for Survival, and his years in the field have earned him respect within the conservation field. He has been a key player in developing conservation plans for orang-utans and influencing positive change for orang-utan protection and survival. This respect has given The Orang-utan Project world standing in conservation, and allows Leif to successfully negotiate conservation agreements with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and other government officials. It has also allowed The Orang-utan Project to

attract major sponsors. TOP supports orang-utan conservation, rainforest protection and reintroduction of orphans in order to save the species from extinction, as well as providing habitat protection through its own Safeguard project - guard patrols that deter wildlife poaching, illegal logging and land clearing in Borneo and Sumatra. It also provides much needed resources for the day-to-day care needs and the reintroduction of orphaned orang-utans, technical and financial assistance to support conservation projects and orangutan rescue and rehabilitation centres. www.orangutan.org.au INTERNATIONAL ELEPHANT PROJECT Leif is also the founder and president of the International Elephant Project (IEP). The same deforestation and the accompanying habitat shrinkage affecting the orang-utans has also led to major conflict with elephants. Elephants raid food crops, destroy rubber, palm oil and coconut plantations and even more seriously, are increasingly responsible for the destruction of villages and a number of human deaths. The response of the Indonesian government to these growing problems has been highly unusual. Originally it was proposed to cull the problem elephants by shooting. However, an outcry from the international and domestic public led these plans to be shelved. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Instead, the authorities have been capturing and either relocating or domesticating wild elephants. Most of the elephants are being held in Elephant Conservation Centres, but these are filled beyond capacity and are overcrowded. The current situation and future for Sumatra’s elephants is bleak. The island has undergone rapid change in the last 25 years and this has had a catastrophic effect on the habitat of the wild elephant. Human elephant conflict is a major issue. The flawed policy of capturing and domesticating elephants also appears to have failed. The International Elephant Project (IEP) is calling on help from the Australian public to save these critically endangered elephants by adopting one. The Asian elephant is found in 13 countries on both the Asian mainland and a number of surrounding islands, and there are four sub-species of elephant, two of which are found in Indonesia. Alarming figures suggest that there are now only 1,180-1,557 wild elephants left in Sumatra. One of the main reasons is habitat loss, caused by Indonesian forests being destroyed for palm oil plantations. The IEP monitors the movements of five elephant herds in the Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem, Sumatra using state-of-the-art Global Positioning System (GPS) collars and Global Information Systems (GIS) in order to collect necessary information on the elephants’ home, range,

size and habitat usage. These monitoring systems are also used as an early warning system for locals in order to mitigate human-elephant conflicts. The main goal of the IEP is to support the conservation of the Bukit Tigapuluh elephants by providing detailed and reliable information on elephant movement. By protecting and monitoring one elephant in each animal group, we are protecting the whole herd. Founder Leif Cocks explains, “Before the setup of the Elephant Conflict Mitigation Units (ECMU), both humans and elephants were dying in the conflict. However since the start of the ECMU, we have had

not one single human or elephant death. However we have a big job ahead of us and we desperately need the public’s help to support the units and secure as much of the remaining habitat for the elephants as possible.” For more information visit www. elephant.org.au And now, Leif has formed an umbrella organisation – Wildlife Asia. The primary objective of Wildlife Asia is the protection and enhancement of the natural habitat of orang-utans, gibbons, Asian rhinos, bears and other Asian wildlife and raises funds in Australia to increase conservation contribution, capacity and efficiency for wildlife conservation. The Orangutan Project, The Asian Rhino Project, Free the Bears, and The Silvery Gibbon Project - all long standing Registered Australian Environmental Organisations with tax deductible status - have joined together to form this new umbrella organization. Wildlife Asia and its field programs are active throughout South East Asia in: • habitat protection (in particular tropical rainforest), • wildlife conservation (in particular orang-utan, rhino, bear and gibbon), and • sustainable development for local communities. Wildlife Asia is a shining example of how like-minded charities can work together to increase their direct and real on-the-ground

“We have a big job ahead of us and we desperately need the public’s help to support the units and secure as much of the remaining habitat for the elephants as possible.” contributions to the conservation and welfare of wildlife. Wildlife in Asia is reaching a crisis point. Due to habitat loss and poaching, many species have their backs against the wall. This new holistic approach will give the Australian private, philanthropist and business communities the opportunity to contribute to broad reaching support for wildlife in Asia, backed by some of Australia’s premier conservation charities. Formed by four of the most

efficient conservation charities within Australia, Wildlife Asia will create even more efficiencies through shared services, to ensure that even more of every dollar raised can go straight to the field. When asked what he likes best about working in this organisation, Leif said, “I get to work with a fantastic and dedicated team that is making real meaningful achievements for both conservation and animal welfare.” www.wildlifeasia.org.au WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

very mother loves her baby, can you imagine how the mother of this baby feels? What a laugh, I remember taking funny photos of my babies all the time, I still look back at them and laugh. I laughed really hard when I saw this cute orang-utan image (above), but when I started researching more images and information for this article, my laughter turned to tears. How could I have been so blind and ignorant? I have turned my house upside down, and, at a guess, 99 per cent of products in my house could potentially kill this little baby. I won’t include the more revolting and heart wrenching images that I WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

have found, but please, learn from my mistakes, understand what goes into the products you are using and how they are affecting other creatures and people. In Malay and Indonesian, ‘orang’ means person and ‘utan’ is derived from hutan, which means forest. Thus, orang-utan literally means person of the forest. A product that has come to light of recent years is palm oil. It is derived from the fruit of the oil palm tree, with the fruit yielding both palm oil and palm kernel oil. Palm oil is extracted from the pulp of the fruit and is edible oil used in food. Palm kernel oil is extracted from the

seed of the fruit and is used in the manufacture of cosmetics. As demand for this versatile product has grown, so has the need for palm oil plantations. But palm oil's appeal comes with significant costs - its plantations often replacing tropical forests, killing endangered species, uprooting local communities, and contributing to the release of climate-warming gases. The United Nations Environment Programme has announced that palm oil plantations are now the leading cause of rainforest destruction in Malaysia and Indonesia. An area of forest equal to 300 soccer fields is destroyed every hour. These forests are home to the Sumatran and Bornean Orang-utans and their habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate. During the past decade, the orang-utan population has decreased by approximately 50 per cent in the wild. This is primarily due to human activities, including rainforest destruction for palm oil plantations. At present, 80 per cent of orang-utan habitat has been altered or lost, but poaching orangutan infants and hunting them for meat also threatens the species. Mothers are often killed for their babies, which are then sold on the black market for pets as they are cute. Extinction in the wild is likely in the next 10 years for Sumatran orangutans and soon after for Bornean orang-utans. We need to recognise the massive amount of suffering being inflicted on a species that is 97 per cent genetically identical to humans. Their intelligence is comparable to that of a five or six year old child. Surely these selfaware animals deserve the right to live and to be free from torture and exploitation? Protecting the orang-utan also protects the surrounding ecosystem and myriad of endangered and exotic species. Saving the orangutan saves the forest. The orangutans that are displaced starve

to death, are killed by plantation workers as pests, or die in the fires. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUNC) has classified the Bornean orang-utan as endangered, with approximately 55,000 remaining with 5,000 killed a year. The Sumatran orangutan is critically endangered, with approximately 6,300 remaining and 1,000 being killed a year. Palm oil is the second most widely produced edible oil and each year Australia imports approximately 130,000 tons of it. Palm oil and its derivatives are found in around 50 per cent of all packaged foods on Australian shelves. It has a longer shelf life than other vegetable oils, making it more appealing for food production. Palm oil is found in many food products, including biscuits, chips, crackers and batters. It is also found in toothpaste, soap, shampoo and cosmetics. In recent years, palm oil-based biodiesel has entered the European market. While biofuel has been promoted as an effective means of reducing emissions, establishing palm oil plantations increases greenhouse emissions. HOW YOU CAN HELP Learn how to look for palm oil in the products you buy.

The best action you can take right now is to write letters to keep the pressure on government and manufacturers. Write to your local politicians. Ask them what they are doing to help achieve mandatory labelling of palm oil. Write to the manufacturers of your favourite foods. CLOUD CONTROL RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA WITH A NEW SOUND AND A NEW ALBUM THAT IS ALREADY RECEIVING RAVE REVIEWS AHEAD OF THE RECORD’S OFFICAL RELEASE.

AFTER THREE YEARS SPENT LIVING, WRITING AND PLAYING IN THE UK, CLOUD CONTROL IS BACK WITH THEIR HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SOPHOMORE ALBUM, DREAM CAVE. THE RECORD MARKS A NEW DIRECTION FOR THE SYDNEY VIA BLUE MOUNTAINS QUARTET, WHILE MAINTAINING THE CLOUD CONTROL CHARM THAT WON THEM SO MUCH ACCLAIM ON THEIR DEBUT, BLISS RELEASE. THE BAND SHACKED UP IN THE PICTURESQUE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE OF KENT WITH PRODUCER BARNY BARNICOTT TO PUT DOWN THE 11 TRACKS THAT MAKE UP DREAM CAVE, A RECORD THAT PROMISES TO CHERISH THEIR ELEGANT PSYCHEDELIC POP, WHILST EXPLORING A TREASURE TROVE OF NEW INFLUENCES AND A PROGRESSIVE DIRECTION. JEREMY KELSHAW SPOKE TO DARREN HOUSE ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM. THE NEW ALBUM IS OUT THIS WEEK, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT IT? Really good. It’s been a bit of a slow build, I guess, to get to the stage we are at now. It’s taken a bit of time, but we have a record we are proud of. We put the hard work in and hopefully it pays off. WHAT’S IT LIKE FOR YOU WHEN YOU DO TAKE THAT TIME TO PUT IT TOGETHER AND SUDDENLY IT’S ALL SYSTEMS GO? It’s totally manic! It’s like it’s really bipolar, with no disrespect to people with bipolar, but it’s just manic. It’s like one minute you’ve written a great song, and then the next minute it’s absolute agony because other people might not agree or you’ve lost faith in your idea. It’s up and down, you need to have a level head on your shoulders to sail that wave of emotion. But all of that comes out of a place where we really care what we are doing. It’s just how you navigate it, whether you are successful or not in terms of keeping everyone on board and your head in the game. YOU PUT YOUR HEART AND SOUL INTO THIS THING AND THEN YOU SIT BACK AND ASK THE WORLD, “WHAT DO YOU THINK OF IT?” Yeah, it’s a funny thing; I think you have to be happy with it as a unit WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

yourself. We go to great lengths to make sure everyone is excited about it, internally, and with friends and managers. We definitely have got to that point where everyone is telling us that we have a good record. And we feel like we’ve got a good record as well, so we are kind of coming to that next stage where we hope other people agree with it, but that’s just a bonus because first

and foremost you have to listen to yourself and be happy with it, and we are. So it’s really exciting. IT MUST BE EUPHORIC WHEN YOU PUT IT OUT THERE AND PEOPLE DO LOVE IT. Yeah, it is. It’s funny, we played last Friday night and we enjoyed it, but we had a few more gears to hit and we were kind of disappointed that we didn’t hit those gears. Everything

we have read and everyone we have talked to has been really positive; it is a great moment when people jump on board and say we’ve got a good album. We play well live, so that’s good. WHY DO YOU THINK YOU DIDN’T GET INTO TOP GEAR? I don’t know. I think it’s because we haven’t played a lot of shows, a combination of that and jet lag. So much stuff goes into finishing it, it takes just as long to do the last 20 per cent (of the record) as it does to do the first 80 per cent and you’re ‘over’ the great times. By the time you have finished, the great feelings of writing a piece and recording it and getting everyone excited, they are all long gone, and everyone is just super tired and exhausted from just trying to put everything into finishing the album and doing that in a place of super low motivation. Well, not really motivation, but maybe enthusiasm. Everyone is just like ‘I just want it to be done’. Those finishing touches can make or break a record - those last few things that you do can take a song from being good to being great. So we were still doing that over the last weekend and dealing with mastering and things like that, so

then we can fully get our head into the mode of performing. It’s probably our first love, because we are a live band first and really enjoy touring. I think, to be able to start touring and focus on that without the other distractions of finishing the record will be good. We are all really looking forward to that. THE CROWD AT THAT FRIDAY SHOW OBVIOUSLY LIKED THE NEW MATERIAL. Yeah they did. Everyone has their favourites, which is really good and we got a good reaction. And we did our encore from the album – a song called Dream Cave, that got a really good reaction. There is quite a lot of variety on the album and it’s good to hear people you trust and people you have never met before saying it was the first time they had heard that song and it was great. It’s always good to hear that feedback and take that on board, and know where your songs are at. OFTEN THE ARTIST HASN’T BEEN HAPPY WITH THE RESULT YET THE AUDIENCE HAS BEEN IN RAPTURES. DO YOU FIND THAT A BIT STRANGE? Yeah, it happens often. Sometimes you write a song and play it as a band before you go into record it and sometimes it comes out WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

“You are looking at these computer sessions and you are just turning things on and off, trying to make things work. Often the best thing to do is say you know what, we’ve got all this crap here that we don’t need. The song doesn’t need anything else” differently or sometimes it just sounds better in your head than it does on the record. But sometimes it sounds much better on the record than it does in your head. That’s the role of the producer, to take something and to whip it into shape, and turn it into something, not that you weren’t expecting but something that is hopefully better than what you were planning. A good producer can do that. I think with creative people, it’s such a weird thing to put your life into making art. But it comes from people who are motivated to do that because they care so much about their art. Obviously that’s a really plain thing to say, but I guess people become disappointed, like you suggest, because they care so

much, because they feel like they have got more to give. And, just because you have more to give, it doesn’t mean that you are able to give it. I think that’s probably frustration that comes from a place of just feeling like you have more to give, but finding how to do that is a really difficult thing to do. Good artists are really skilled at being motivated and being able to turn that motivation into good work, it’s a difficult thing to do. CAN YOU BECOME TOO MUCH OF A PERFECTIONIST ABOUT IT? You definitely can. There were a lot of times with this record where we wondered if we were, but sometimes you have to back yourself and go,

‘You know, it’s not right, we’re not happy with it, so we need to fix it, we need to make it better’. I think we are pretty good at that. When we do go through that process, often if people say, ‘Yeah, it’s good, its good’, well, good is not good enough. We need people going ‘yeah, that’s it, that’s the money right there’. It has to be great but finding that is fraught with danger. It’s good when you get it there, that’s for sure. CAN YOU OVER-PRODUCE IT - IF ONE TWEAK IS GOOD, THEN TWO TWEAKS MUST BE BETTER, RIGHT? There is definitely a line in the sand, you can definitely overproduce something and that is what often happens at those final stages of trying to make it as big as possible. From a practical point of view, you are looking at these computer sessions and everything in the song is visually in front of you. You are literally just turning things on and off, and throwing it around trying to make things work and build it up. Often the best thing to do is go, ‘You know what, we’ve got all this crap here that we don’t need. The song doesn’t need anything else’. At that point, if we feel like that, then we feel like we are on the right track. You can take stuff away and the song still stands up. YOU’RE SAID TO HAVE EXPLORED SOME NEW INFLUENCES ON THIS RECORD, WHAT OR WHO ARE THEY? (laughs) That was me saying, “Do you think we sound like The Beachboys”, which is a funny thing to do when we are really nothing like The Beachboys. I think they have a good way of mixing stuff up and being kind of extreme in a tasteful way. We’ve got a bunch more guitar solos on this album, it’s not anything like when we started but it felt like it was the right thing to do. We’ve got a few tracks that kind of got electronic drum programming that we have been melting into an organic drum sound and things like that, so we’ve kind of got this

meshing of the two sounds. We’ve got a few tracks with vocoder. We’ve got a track that Hardy sings through vocoder, The Smoke, the Feeling, it’s kind of dance-like I guess you’d say; but at the same time we kind of weave classic and melodic work with vocals into the new directions that we’ve got. We want to push in these directions but we don’t want to lose ourselves. We have read articles that suggest that’s exactly what we have done, so to hear that and have that feedback is really encouraging that we have done it successfully. DOES THE NEW DIRECTION COME FROM A CONFIDENCE OF BEING AROUND FOR A WHILE NOW? I think so. I think it comes from knowing that you can’t just stand still, you have to progress. It doesn’t

have to come from a production type of thing, it can come from a song writing point of view or how you go about recording. There is a multitude of ways you can push in different directions but for us, we decided, as part of the passion, to do those things I described. I think it has progressed from the song writing point of view as well. We wrote our last record in 2008/2009 and now we have written in 2012, so there was a big gap in writing. We’ve got like 400 gigs under our belt and it’s the real deal. We all used to have part time jobs but we’ve been full time now for a couple of years, it’s more serious but I don’t think that has meant we have created a more serious album, not at all. I think we’ve taken it a bit more seriously. It has weaved its way from being full time and that has surely been WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

an integral part of the sound of this album. YOU MUST HAVE ALL GROWN AS PEOPLE, AND YOU’VE HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF LIVING IN THE UK AS WELL. Yeah, exactly. On the first album, we were often asked the question, “How does (life) impact your music making? We’ve never been about proactively taking literal circumstances and weaving them into music; it’s a much more subtle thing. It’s a much more of an organic and subconscious thing. Of course, living in London and being full time musicians has weaved its way into the album, but we have never been about writing a London album or a British album. We’ve recorded a bunch of this album in a cave (but) it’s not a cave album, it’s not a concept album. These are just things we’ve done, it’s who we are, a bunch of friends making music, so it’s reflected but it’s not a literal interpretation of our circumstances. We’ve grown from our university days and now we’ve moved past that, so (the writing) naturally reflects that. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

SOME OF THE NEW DIRECTION WAS A CONSCIOUS DECISION, SOME WAS ORGANIC, RIGHT? Definitely a combination of the two. The album is called Dream Cave, so we had this thing that we wanted to go and record some of our songs in a cave. So we recorded all the vocals to the title track of Dream Cave, we revamped a bunch of drums and keyboard lines and a bunch of other vocal lines, and pumped each of them out in the cave, and played each of them back to get the reverb of the cave. It was a real literal and physical thing that we did. But at the same time, like you suggest, there is so much more organic stuff, we are all living there with our partners and just the space that we are in weaves its way into the music and is reflected in ways that are difficult to describe because it’s not a literal thing that we have done from a song writing point of view. WHAT DID BARNEY BARNICOTT BRING TO THE ALBUM? It was good working with him.

At times he had quite an inspired and methodical kind of approach. We think the best kind of thing he did was with the song ‘Island Living’ - he did some really good stuff on that and the song called The Smoke, the Feeling. He is very good. We went in with half our songs and we kind of knew what we were doing and the other half we were pretty unsure with the direction we wanted to go. He was really good at interpreting and pushing us into some directions that brought the best out of those songs that we weren’t sure about. It is really good to be able to work with someone who has the capability to take something that is a bit crap or average or just good and push it up to being great. He really excelled at getting the best out of the band and getting the best out of us as well. HOW DID LONDON LIFE CHANGE YOU AS A PERSON AS OPPOSED TO A MUSICIAN? It’s a pretty transient city, there is a big expat Australian contingency, and it’s kind of easy to not know

a lot of British people if you don’t make an effort. You can fall into pockets of expats that just hang out with each other. For us, it was just getting to know a few British bands. It was the best thing to just get to meet them, meet their friends, get to know a bunch of people that have lived and breathed and grown up in London. How it’s changed me as a person… well, we have kind of been on our own out there, it’s like our safety net has gone. We’ve gone full time, we moved to London, our managers were in Australia, we had a label out there (and) for a long time we weren’t sure if they were going to put up this record. We’ve all had to ‘man up’ and support each other as a band unit and really come to terms with ‘this is it’. We have this amazing opportunity and we want to give it the best shot we’ve got. No one else can write songs for us, no one else can record music for us, it is up to us and we have to take the bull by the horns and go for it. In Sydney, I’m not sure if it was safer or easier, but it was a bit more familiar. London is becoming more familiar, we’ve lived there for a couple of years now, but at the same time, you are just on a ledge all the time and you have to take control and do it yourself.

Dream Cave is out on August 9, 2013 on iTunes through Ivy League Records.

as Vegas is a city of only two seasons - hot and cold. So with that in mind it is time to let you know summer has well and truly arrived in town, with our air conditioners pumping cool air 24/7 for the next four months of extreme desert heat, and with all of that the grand re-opening of our super pools and spectacular pool parties. My old favorite, the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino has added new nightclubs and restaurants to compete with former celebrity hang outs like the Palms and Hard Rock Casinos. Last week I checked out the revamped MGM pool - which they named Wet Republic - where I found their bungalows, Jacuzzis, chaise lounges and misting systems among the best on the strip. This is where you will be charged $3600 for a bottle of Dom Perignon Rose Magnum AND a four per cent service charge, and an 18 per cent auto gratuity. It’s on the menu, so don’t say you didn’t know when you get your bill $4392! They also opened a new fivelevel nightclub, with a Cantonese restaurant, called Hakkasan. MGM head honcho, Scott Sibella, said it encompasses a whopping 80,000 square feet. I asked him how this club, which attracts a far younger in crowd than years gone by, adds to their gaming revenue. He said in today’s world, 70 per cent of the revenue is not gaming related, as times have changed. No longer is gaming the main attraction in today’s Sin City Vegas. You could have knocked me down with a celery stick on that news. Still my favorite pool hangout is the Venus Pool Club at Caesar’s

Palace, where there is topless - and sometimes bottomless - bathing, depending on the flow of Grey Goose. For the non-sleeping hound dog night owls, the established TAO and LAVO nightclubs at the 7000 room Mega Venetian - Palazzo hotel casino are great places to see, and also at the famous Caesars Palace PURE nightclub, the playground of the Kardashians, Hiltons and a

Snooki and Co. However, not all of the action is confined to the strip. Fifteen miles south of town is my favorite local playground, the M resort, mainly because it is situated in the Gucci part of town, where driving a Maserati, Ferrari or Mercedes is as common as drinking bottled Voss water from Norway. I live in this part of town on Louis Vuitton Blvd, however my gambling losses prohibit me from graduating to the Ferrari class at this time. Last week I managed to compete in an invitation-only slot tournament, surrounded by real live lions and our eye on the prize - which might I add, was $200k. This week my old high roller buddy, Captain Justin, flew in from Australia to spend a few days in Sin

City. It’s funny how Justin got his title as ‘Captain’, as he has never been near a ship nor at war, nor captained a team. In the old days, when we used to create havoc around the world, he would tell the ladies he was the Captain of a private jet for a very rich oil Sheik. Lo and behold, these ladies used to fall all over him! His visit set me thinking that the outside world was very unaware of some of the treasures we have here, so I took him downtown to visit the Burlesque Hall of Fame, situated in

the artsy, funkier part of Freemont Street. Readers will recall Freemont Street, before they closed it off for pedestrian traffic, as always being featured in Hollywood movies. Who can forget Elvis driving in his street car race from Viva Las Vegas or James Bond being chased by Sheriff’s deputies in Diamonds Are Forever?. There is so much more to tell you of this town, including the Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend that I will shortly be attending, but that’s another story for another time. Until

next time, as my friend Dustin Wax says to me - Hugs and Glitter to you all from my sexy town.

CAPTIVATED BY THE MAGICAL POWERS OF FOOD SINCE SHE WAS A YOUNG GIRL MAKING PANCAKES IN HER GRANDMOTHER’S TASMANIAN KITCHEN, SARAH FRENCH DEVELOPED A BURNING DESIRE TO COOK. COMBINED WITH A LONGING TO TRAVEL, SARAH LATER JOINED THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY AS A COOK, LEARNING HER PROFESSION IN THE ROUGH, TOUGH AND PREDOMINANTLY MALE WORLD OF PROFESSIONAL KITCHENS. AFTER PREPARING DELICACIES FOR AUSTRALIAN NAVY COMMAND AND VISITING INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENTS AND PRIME MINISTERS, SARAH CREATED HER OWN BUSINESS CATERING TO THE WORLD’S RICH AND FAMOUS. SASSY, EXTROVERTED AND DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS, SARAH IS A MARKETER’S DREAM; SOMETHING THAT HASN’T BEEN LOST ON TELEVISION EXECUTIVES AS SHE STRIVES TO BECOME THE NEXT TV CELEBRITY CHEF. amie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Paula Abdul are amongst the celebrities that have dined on the exquisite cuisine prepared by a girl who developed her love of cooking when she was just a wide eyed child in her grandmother’s kitchen. Sarah French, has done it all, and now has the world on a beautifully prepared platter at her feet. Born in Tasmania, Australia, Sarah says she was captivated with the ‘magical powers’ of food from a very early age. She would eagerly watch her grandmother dance effortlessly from bench to bench creating delicacies with amazing aromas – she wanted to be just like her, create ‘magic’. With a burning desire to cook and a longing to travel, Sarah joined the Royal Australian Navy as a cook. It was here that her career began, in the rough, tough and predominantly male world of professional kitchens. “The navy took me around the world, which got me interested in

produce and food from different cultures,” Sarah told me. “I learnt a lot about cooking en masse, attention to detail, structure, persistence, management and all

the business sense of food.” Sarah’s love for cooking soon transformed into a love for food, and although they sound one and the same, she learnt very quickly that the two are very different.

“Cooking is one thing but creating culinary miracles with the world’s best produce and delicacies is a totally different experience - one that I was lacking during my time in the navy.” She managed to explore her love of creating such delicacies when she would cook onboard the private yacht of the chief of the navy when he was entertaining distinguished guests, such as the prime ministers of Australia and Japan. This new passion for quality found Sarah securing a second job working under a Canadian chef, who showed her the other side of the food world that she had been searching for. New, exciting, produce and fast paced dinner services with new flavour combinations. “Simply put”, said Sarah, “It was a dream come true. In order to have the freedom to fully explore what the real culinary world had to offer, I knew I had to give up the highly restrictive, larger-than-life world of navy ships.”

Above: Hamming it up in New York City. Below left: Getting friendly with the locals at Muscle Beach, California. Below right: Life’s pretty good when you are a chef on a European super yacht. Sarah resigned from the navy after seven years and embarked on a solo mission around the globe, which consisted of eating and cooking her way through Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. “The world became my culinary playground and I spent more and more time traveling to exotic destinations and immersing myself in different cultural influences and cooking techniques.” There was no doubt in her mind, after experiencing everything from luxury Nuevo Rich ‘mega yachts’ in Australia, New Zealand, Monte Carlo and Europe, to teaching locals new culinary skills high in the Indian Himalayas. “These guys (in the Indian Himalayas) were cooking like pizzas in a pot, like they had created some little vacuum sealed oven out of an old aluminum pot, it was ridiculous. I wanted to teach them how to cook something cool.” During one part of Sarah’s world trek, in Zambia, she ended up taking over the tour cooking because “the local guys, had no clue!” Even though she had paid her money for the tour and knowing WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

that the operators were getting paid to cook, she found the food to be inedible, telling the tour leaders “You’re killing the tour and you’re killing me and I don’t want to be killed in Africa.” The food was horrible and had no flavour. “We would go through the towns and we wouldn’t stop. We would be up in these high overland trucks looking down on the people, to me, that felt really bizarre. So I made them stop the truck so that we could get off and buy the local produce. They didn’t want to stop;

they said it was too dangerous and that the people there were very poor and will ask you for money. I said ‘Dude, we are in Africa, we know, we came here, we’re cool with that, the least we can do is support the local markets and local growers and not just sift through and not deal with the poverty issue’. “They thought I was crazy, but we stopped and we had fun with

kids and we bought local produce and that’s when we really started to get some good food. Everyone was saying, ‘Thank God you are here, now we won’t die of starvation or poisoning.’ I don’t know what would have happened if we hadn’t revolted against the tour leaders and taken the cooking into our own hands. It was like anarchy in Africa. We weren’t fighting over diamonds or anything like that, we were just fighting over food! It was like a first world problem in a third world country, which was a bit of a conundrum. Everyone else is struggling to eat and we were just complaining about what we were eating. It was a little bit of an eye opener.” One day, whilst chatting with a friend during her travels, it all became clear to Sarah. She would surrender her nomadic lifestyle and head back to Sydney to share her love and passion for food in a more intimate and bespoke manner. Back in Sydney, Sarah started a personal chef business for Sydney’s affluent. Once people became familiar with her skills and flexibility, the business grew quickly. “It went from four four to six to 12 to 20 each weekend, and I was doing this all myself, that’s where the business was born. Some of these people used to entertain a lot, some of them would have a dinner party for 12 every week, or a Sunday lunch for 30, there was always something entertaining going on.” At the time, Sarah also worked for three other catering companies. She was open and honest with them, telling the owners what she was doing and where she wanted to take her business, they never had a problem with her learning from them. After two years of operating, sharing other people’s kitchens, Sarah had to get her own space. Three years on, she is looking for an even bigger space. What started out as ‘Sarah French: personal chef’ soon evolved into ‘Sarah French: Boutique Catering and Events’ and six years later, the business has transformed into the internationally renowned

Sarah cooked for Paula Abdul during her most recent US visit.

‘Sydney’s Finest Boutique Catering and Events’. “My initial dream to go solo had taken on a life of its own and I was now in a completely spell binding world of high end events, luxury yachts and the world’s best produce.” Sarah attributes the success of her business to passion, believing you have to really love what you do if you are going to get into catering. “You cannot do my job if you hate what you do, because you would be the saddest person on earth. No one likes washing dishes, no one likes taking the rubbish out, dealing with pest control issues, stuff like that. It’s 80 per cent prepping, it’s blood, sweat and tears, but it’s worth it for the 20 per cent of the time when you are in someone’s house and you see all their stress and fear just fade away. They are so happy to see you because you are contributing to their day,” said Sarah. “If you choose to do what you love and you do it well, you become a master of your passion. For me, I couldn’t even think of doing anything else.” In her down time, Sarah’s life is still closely linked to food. She goes out with her friends to her favourite restaurants, one being Sokyo in Pyrmont, where Sarah has studied the menu and planned her own feast. “I have created this awesome menu, not actually in what it is, but how we eat it and which order we eat it, right down to the dessert. It’s like the maximum experience.” After talking to Sarah, we came to the conclusion that her friends deliberately ‘prove’ that they can’t cook. She told us they have served her burnt Turkish bread, burnt black omelette and the like. Sarah believed they were just bad cooks and has always stepped in to save the day, managing to create a feast for a group of her friends from just the contents of a fairly sparse refrigerator. When we pointed out that her friends just wanted her to do the cooking for them, she sat for a few seconds, gave this suggestion a lot of thought, then stated, “Oh yeah, they are too, the bastards! I’m WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

making some phone calls as soon as I’ve finished here. I never even picked up on that!” More than two decades after developing her love for food, Sarah continues to be inspired by the simple pleasures that come from creating a meal for family, friends and distinguished guests. She has travelled the world for her passion of creating beautiful food. She has a team of internationally trained chefs cooking up a storm at exclusive corporate functions, elite private dinner parties, intimate weddings and bespoke celebrity events. Sarah has cooked for Leonardo DiCaprio, Paula Abdul and Jamie Foxx, all of whom she has found to be lovely, relaxed people, who are very easy to deal with. Sarah admits to being very lucky, having had some great opportunities presented to her. For example, in LA, she met up with the former editor of Zagat magazine, Karen Burke. Karen was having a large number of guests to her house; she wanted to know what Sarah had planned for the catering. “When I said that I didn’t know yet, she started to get really stressed out. I told her not to worry, we would go to the markets and see what was there, and I created the menu when I saw what was available. I just cook to the season of wherever I am, what the best produce is.” Karen was extremely WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

impressed and happy with the result. Packing up her Sydney life for a while, Sarah is heading to London, Greece, Spain, France and Dubai to work on super yachts and for professional sports players, royals and celebrities. She already has work lined up on American television shows and will be cooking for Arab Emirate royalty. “My goal is to do a cooking segment on the Ellen show. I would love to have my own television show, to travel and get into people’s lives and homes all around the world. I have been fortunate enough that all of my clients are wealthy and they have the biggest and best kitchens, and the biggest shopping lists with no budget,

and I have access to the world’s best produce. But I would love to take the world into everyone’s kitchens and for people to see the contrast between a wealthy kitchen financially and wealthy kitchen in heart. I have experienced it on both levels, and it’s quite amazing. “My end goal is to go back to Zambia and Malawi and do a culinary school for the high risk and underprivileged kids there. Give them the opportunity to do something non-academic and to give them an avenue to learn a new skill that they otherwise wouldn’t have had.” Would or will Sarah open her own restaurant? “If the opportunity came for the right restaurant, then I would say definitely. But I am at a

point in my life now where I want to do things that make a difference, and are sustainable and have an alternative purpose other than just food and lifestyle components. Something that has a community edge or sustainability edge, a bit like the ‘Fifteen’ project, it has to have some sort of community benefit and have an ongoing effect, its more than just feeding someone a great meal and then they just leave.” The question just had to be asked – What is Sarah’s most favourite thing to cook? “I don’t have one signature dish. I’m into Japanesestyle and really good quality seafood, a king fish Carpaccio with a blood orange and yuzu dressing. I have now discovered these pearls that hold a liquid of yuzu and soy, and a tuna Carpaccio with yuzu dressing and truffle pearls with baby coriander and fried onion which was really yummy.

“Nothing excites me more than introducing my guests to new and exciting foods and flavours, always amazing and sometimes a little weird and always wonderful! “There really is no greater satisfaction than knowing that people who share my passion

for food have appreciated my creations. I put my heart on the plate every time I cook and when people walk away with a culinary experience they never forget it is truly a blessing in disguise.” www.sarahfrench.com.au

fter being a UK expat in Los Angeles for a couple of years now, I really have found a deeper appreciation for my talented and wonderful homeland. Returning there as often as I can to witness excellent English theatre, film and art - that is made available to everyone - I realize that the UK truly has some incredible talent, one of which is being an extraordinary young woman, Charlotte Walsh. Recently, I came across Charlotte, who is president and CEO of Versity Clothing. At 24 years of age, I found this to be a striking achievement. I had the chance to sit down and talk with Miss Walsh in the Heart of Britain - where her company is based. Miss Walsh (pictured, far right), a slender, youthful and arresting young woman sits in VC casual jogging pants with a Loose Bamboo cotton tee. It is casual and smart. She is relaxed in her own brand, wearing it proudly. “Established in 2010,” she explained, “I founded the company on a set of principles using the finest fabrics and cottons while being ethically produced.” She explained to me that she, “Wanted it to be ethically made through ‘fair wear’ standards, so there’s no forced labour or child labour involved at the production stage.” She also made clear that getting a better quality of cotton, like bamboo and organic, provides superior qualities, such as being naturally antibacterial and comparatively softer in feel. Now this is something very few (if any) top brands or companies do. Miss Walsh explained that ‘fair wear’ was important to her as, “There isn’t enough choice on the High WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Street and I want to offer a humanly produced alternative to cheaply made clothing.” She explained that there had been difficulties dealing with foreign traders and that patience is an unequivocal tool that one needs to build a business. “Rome wasn’t built

in a day,” she jokes. Miss Walsh understands that with each passing year, her company and business grows stronger and stronger. For each unique design, she solely plans out and details. She keeps her designs fresh and on trend by, “Trying to keep one step ahead with the latest fashion”. Her travels around the world have also helped. “I’ve found that a little detail from something can trigger a new design”. She also favors rummaging in a thrift store for some vintage wear. “The design on my latest jogging pants was influenced from vintage gym kits I found in a charity shop”. The joggers are incredibly trendy

ACTRESS AND MODEL, JAZZ BRELL, HAS CERTAINLY MADE HER MARK IN THE AUSTRALIAN ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. SHE RECENTLY STARRED AS A FEATURED EXTRA IN BAZ LUHRMANN’S FILM THE GREAT GATSBY, IS A MODEL FOR PLATFORM MODELS AND WORKS AS A STYLIST AT CAMILLA. IT’S NOT HARD TO SEE WHY SHE HAS HAD SUCH A SUCCESSFUL CAREER AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE. HER BUBBLY, CONFIDENT AND VIVACIOUS PERSONALITY MAKES YOU INSTANTLY FALL IN LOVE WITH HER. SHE IS DEFINITELY AN AUSTRALIAN TALENT TO KEEP AN EYE ON. VITA CARBONE SAT DOWN WITH THE RISING STAR TO TALK ABOUT THE FILM, HER MODELLING CAREER AND WHAT THIS 22-YEAR-OLD LIKES TO GET UP TO IN HER SPARE TIME.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY DOING CAREER WISE? I am currently working part time as a PR assistant at Duraflex Group Australia. They distribute and do in-house PR for Thomas Sabo, Spinning Jewellery, Sekonda and Philip Stein. I also work as a part time model for Platform Models and at Camilla Franks as a customer stylist. WHAT ROLE DID YOU PLAY ON ‘THE GREAT GATSBY?’ In Gatsby, I was first cast as a featured extra as a butterfly for one of Jay Gatsby’s huge parties. I was on a stage singing to the party crowd. I was even given my own trailer next to Barry Otto, purely because my costume was so difficult to put on and take off. I was then cast as a 1920s swimmer for the first party where we spent over 15 hours a day in a lukewarm pool built in Fox Studios. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING ON THE SET? It was amazing! They were outrageously long days; we would do between 13-15 hours a day and have call times at 6am. As we got through more filming the hours shortened, but we were still working hard, constantly dancing, singing and chatting. The set was so real and I felt like I was actually at one of his parties. Leo and the gang were only a stone’s throw away and there would be moments when I would awkwardly catch their eye or bump into them while manoeuvring myself through their set chairs. DID YOU MEET BAZ LUHRMANN? I wouldn’t say he would recall my name as he continuously referred to me as “butterfly girl” but I WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

was directed by him personally, which made me feel important. I did meet one of his script editors who told me a few quirky stories about him. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HIM? He is a wild ride. He is so creative and full of ideas that it’s hard for him to be brought back to reality. As stated

carried metal butterfly wings that weighed more than 7kg on my back for most of the filming. Prada and Miu Miu supplied all the shoes and jewellery. One of the greatest highlights of working on this film was gaining experience and inner strength to push myself and not be afraid of working hard for what I want; quite ironic that this too is one of the character traits of Gatsby portrayed within the film. earlier, his script editor spilled that he mentally doesn’t remember everyday things, such as eating or going to the toilet because he is so fixated on his work. When the scaffolding was moved to shoot different angles ofo the film, Baz would continuously forget, and over the microphone we would hear him struggling to get back onto the set, sometimes trying to crawl through the scaffolding. WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT WORKING ON THIS FILM? The people I met, the costumes, and visually seeing the inner workings of the movie industry. I met Leonardo DiCaprio and his entourage, Catherine Martin and her costume team, the two first 3D movie engineers from New York and a tonne of extras with their own amazing stories and personalities. The costumes were unreal. Whilst still studying a bachelor of fashion design at UTS, getting prodded and dressed by Catherine Martin was a huge deal for me. My costume was made especially for the movie and I WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

HAVE YOU HAD ANY OTHER ACTING GIGS? Through my agency I have scored myself a few television comericals, including Bonds and Toyota, where I again featured. However, to date, Gatsby has definitely been my highlight. ARE YOU MORE COMFORTABLE AS AN ACTOR OR MODEL? I am definitely more comfortable as a model, probably because we are told to do nothing but stand there and look good. However, I love acting, messing around and just being plain old stupid and hilarious. One thing I haven’t learnt yet, is the ability to control my explosions of enthusiasm, which proves that I do need professional lessons to improve and excel in acting. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CAREER ASPIRATIONS? I have so many it’s hard to keep up. I love acting, modelling, designing and being creative. I am currently pursuing a more business/PR orientated career to gain experience in this industry so I can really figure out what I want to do. Next year I am planning on starting

my MBA, continue modelling and take a trip to LA and poke my head back into the filming industry. WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT ACTING/MODELLING? Holding your tongue and dealing with rejection. Rejection is continuous and pushes you down. Every job you don’t get - you’re too fat for, not the right look - it makes you feel like you’re doing something wrong. You keep trying to create what everyone else wants. At times you have to put up with a lot of waiting around and extreme conditions, such as outdoor shoots in cold, windy and terrible weather. It is definitely not for the faint hearted. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN? To be nice to everyone, and always be on time. I will tell you though, it’s not as easy as it seems. WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO HANG OUT IN SYDNEY? Bondi. I moved there this year and I love being so close to the beach because every morning I wake up and it smells so fresh. There is always something to do, even if you are alone. WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO YOU IN LIFE? Being independent, having faith in myself, and my family as they taught me these things. IF I COULD WRITE YOU A CHEQUE FOR $1M, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT? I would put $800,000 into a deposit on a house in Bondi. This would be an investment property that I would rent out to pay off the mortgage. Eventually, my sister and I would live there. The rest I would hold onto for living purposes, and of course, treat myself to a new handbag and quick holiday for me and my family.

name is Jacinda. IF YOU DON’T PURSUE A CAREER IN MODELLING OR ACTING WHAT WILL YOU DO? I’m still figuring it all out. I have such a diverse range of interests it’s hard to pinpoint one exact area where I would like to end up. I love singing, dancing, acting, presenting, modelling, business, marketing and PR. I just need to find something that can incorporate all of my skills and pleasures. Ultimately I would want to run my own business. WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? Passion is the hardest emotion to control. It’s also the hardest to create and hold on to. I am passionate about a lot of things, it’s now about filtering them in the right direction. Mainly I am passionate about the essence of creativity and relationships.

IF YOU COULD EMULATE ANY ACTORS CAREER, WHOSE WOULD IT BE AND WHY? It would have to be Charlize Theron. I love her in every single way. Her beauty, her strength, her acting skills, the way she carries herself and her versatility. I did a photo shoot once trying to emulate her, a very hard task indeed. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? I have had a few, all in different areas of my life. One would be making the swimming trials for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Another would be having my HSC work nominated for the Powerhouse museum, walking in Fashion Week 2010-2013 and then getting a part in The Great Gatsby. To others it might not seem like much, but I don’t measure my achievements based on others. I base them on how they made me feel, what I learnt and use them to help me discover what I really want in life. WHAT MIGHT PEOPLE NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU? I am quite the thrill seeker. Book down, light off, relaxing and relishing my time off this airplane, heels firmly planted on terra firma! To think I could nearly make a return flight from London to Moscow in the same time as my journey from Sydney to Perth, highlights what an expansive and truly beautiful continent the ‘Lucky Country’ is. That being said, I’m now car bound for a three hour detour south of Perth to Margaret River. Passing Bunbury, then Busselton, then Cowaramup, and now the township of Margaret River. Generally speaking, most country towns are archetypal, but what distinguishes this town from most is its location. Only 10 minutes from the sea, yet within five minutes of the countryside and pristine wineries. Where to start and what to do? My game plan was to go to my favorite cellar doors, sample, buy, and move on to the next. Not so easy when engaged in conversation with some of Australia’s finest viticulturists. It’s amazing to think that these areas produce just three per cent of the total Australian grape production, yet account for over 20 per cent of the premium wine market. Itching for a chance to sample the latest release, Diana Madeline – my favorite cabernet - I arrive at Cullen Wines only to be ushered past the tasting bench into the restaurant for a late lunch. only sampling, I try some malbec, merlot, and then the Diana Madeline… mother’s milk, it’s the silk department. After procuring two bottles, again I’m driving through lush pastures on to another icon, Cape Mentelle. I’m here for the Zinfandel, but I also buy a bottle of Botrytis. It’s a shame I don’t have time for degustation and matched wine tastings amongst the barrels, but it’s time to move on (if you’re here

in Summer, enjoy a movie on the outdoor screen with a bottle, and some cheese-or pizza). Out of nearly 200 wineries, you won’t get close to seeing them all – unfortunately, it’s life’s opportunity cost. More wineries and more tastings follow, and then back in town for dinner at La Scarpetta Trattoria. The oven baked fish with Sicilian olives, green beans in white wine is superb. The following day, a scenic drive of the coastline is spectacular, as huge glassy waves roll in formation. Cow Bombie – a deep water reef break about 2km offshore - is firing, and after watching the movie, Drift, which was shot here, it’s hard not to marvel at nature’s power and beauty.

WITH RIELY SAVILLE

Arriving at Voyager Winery, I am surrounded by Versailles-esq gardens, perfectly manicured and maintained. After a lengthy lunch, and some tastings it’s off to find Pierro, famous for their Chardonnay, but I am interested in how they grow Pinot Noir in this region. After a chat with winemaker, Dr Michael Peterkin, the more shaded slope of grape produces their sub label, Fire Gully Pinot, which is tasted and bought. So I need more days, like most escapes, but feel my time without

surfing, or caving at the nearby Mammoth Cave, has been well spent amongst the vines. Robert Louis Stevensen said, “Wine is bottled poetry”, but there is no poetic justice in my excess baggage!
