UNISON will — defend public and community services — protect you at work and support you in claiming your rights — negotiate with employers for LGBT equality — campaign for equality at work, in public services and in society.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender UNISON members meet locally and nationally to support each other, identify and stamp out discrimination and campaign for change. PRIDE BRISTOL 2011

WELCOME TO PRIDE DAY PRIDE IS A HUGE CELEBRATION OF LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL & TRANS (LGBT) PEOPLE. Pride Bristol celebrates LGBT lives, promotes equality & spreads a positive message of acceptance across the South West. During the year, we try to reach as many people as possible with the simple message that being L, G, B or T is perfectly OK & that diversity is a gift. We firmly believe that it is the many different communities in society that make life richer for everyone. Throughout history LGBT people have been made to feel ashamed of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Even today, reports of homophobia reach us through facebook or email on a weekly basis. Despite an increasingly tolerant society, there are many situations in our working lives, with colleagues, with families & friends where shame still flickers. ‘Coming Out’ is hard, but the wider community often don’t realise, that actually, it’s not just a one-time event but an ongoing consideration. Who, in our everyday lives do we hide from, who do we ‘come out’ to, & what reaction will we face if we do? Many in society still attempt to inflict shame on LGBT people. Currently ‘gay’ is the most commonly used insult in UK playgrounds. Whilst it might be a throw away remark, many of the people using it wouldn’t dream of replacing ‘gay’ with another minority group. Such careless insults impact upon already vulnerable or questioning young people & upon nonintended targets including those with gay family members or friends.

4 WELCOME

Pride is a very powerful way to challenge homophobia & counter a history of shame. The festival is a highly visible & affirming celebration of LGBT lives. It is an opportunity for the whole community to unite and be seen & makes a clear statement that prejudice is not tolerated by the city. Pride Bristol is organised by a professional full-time team who reach out to over 100 community groups & over 250 volunteers to make Pride Bristol happen. Pride Bristol is a not-for-profit organisation & inclusivity is important to us. This year we have worked to distribute hundreds of free tickets to vulnerable members of the community & to facilitate the attendance of a wide range of people. Our first event in 2010 attracted around 20,000 visitors & placed Pride Bristol firmly on the UK map. We are passionate about creating a high quality & sustainable event of which the LGBT community can be proud. The festival is open to everyone who values diversity. We extend our invite to supportive families & friends of LGBT people. Without these allies, we would not have won many of the rights we now have. It is through engagement that our neighbourhoods become safer & society becomes stronger. Join the vibrant Parade & enjoy entertainment across Castle Park. Prepare for a world in full colour! - The Pride Bristol Team

SATURDAY 16 JULY

PRIDE PARADE JOIN THE COLOURFUL PARADE AS IT WINDS ITS WAY THROUGH THE CENTRE OF BRISTOL START : Queen Square | TIME : 12 noon | PRICE : Free Pride Day opens with a huge, vibrant parade through the city centre. Laugh, dance, march, walk or sing. For some the parade is a memorial to those who lost their lives to HIV or prejudice, for some it’s a political statement, and for many it’s the one day a year that they can celebrate being different. Everyone who values equality is welcome to join. The family and friends of LGBT people are all affected in some way, large or small, by LGB or T identities. Similarly LGBT rights are won by not only the gay and trans communities, but by our allies, who lent their support to the fight for equality. Pride Bristol is an opportunity for people to feel included and to feel proud. Leading the 2011 Parade are Bristol Samba, our fabulous drag queens (who have promised something even more special than 2010’s Harley Davidson entrance), a vast 50-metre rainbow flag...and a fire engine. The Parade starts in Queen Square from 12 noon, and arrives at Castle Park at 1 pm. The parade is free but entry to Castle Park is ticketed. Tickets are available to purchase in advance and can be exchanged for a wristband in Queen Square (in addition to the entrances at Castle Park). Please arrive early to do this. Tickets for the Pride Day Festival subsidise the planning, security, insurance and safety costs associated with the Parade. Tickets for Pride Day are available in advance from the Pride Bristol Website : www.pridebristol.org or Bristol Ticket Shop 0117 929 9008.
