Many parents are already getting worried about how they are going to cope with their children over the long summer school holidays. Young horticulturists create wildlife garden for people with disabilities
A group of young horticulturists have transformed a neglected garden for people with physical disabilities, into a haven for wildlife.
The group of 15 student horticulturists, aged between 16 and 20, created a pond, seating area and flowerbeds in a dilapidated corner of the Park Avenue Disability Resource Centre, Bush Hill Park. With a budget that stretched only to a pond liner, the students’ task was to use stone, plants and trees from other parts of the garden while
also giving neglected garden furniture a lift.
After redesigning the five square metre plot, and clearing away ivy and brambles, the students then employed an arborist to fell a dead tree to create habitats for insects such as woodlice, spiders and beetles. They planted buddlleia, to attract butterflies; and grasses, which provide shelter for insects; while the pond has attracted a host of wildlife including dragonflies. The project has helped the Level 1 Diploma in Horticulture students, to learn how to work to a brief with limited resources. “The residents had their input into the design, so it was really everyone’s garden. It

was also really good doing a real job as part of my course, I learned a lot from it about how to attract wildlife. The centre is very close to my house and my neighbours were talking about it, saying ‘have you seen what Capel Manor has done?’, which was a good feeling,” said Student George Poland, 17, of Bush Hill Park “They are really delighted we have been able to introduce wildlife into an area which had nothing. The project has gone so well that we’re talking about doing a sensory garden next year. We do a lot of work in the grounds of Capel Manor, but to take their studies out to a real life environment, with all the related health and safety access, communication
considerations and skills, has been a great challenge,” said Student tutor Sarah Seery. “Our students are now sensitive to people who cope with a disability. They have also achieved a great sense of satisfaction and self confidence from working on the Park Avenue project.” “It started off being about a pond and now it is much more than that – having young people come in and talk to our service users and hear their life experiences has been mutually beneficial. Everyone is excited to see how it develops and what new wildlife they can spot,” said Samantha Gajadhar, Park Avenue’s Independent Living Manager.

Hertsmere Borough Council has teamed up with Lee Valley White Water Centre to offer one lucky resident the chance to ride the rapids at the new purpose-built venue in Hertfordshire. Lee Valley White Water Centre in Waltham Cross has been built for the canoe slalom events at the 2012 Olympic Games, but is the only brand new Olympic venue open to the public to enjoy in advance. Councillor Brenda Batten, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Health, said: “It is fantastic to have this exciting venue on our doorstep and I really hope that Hertsmere residents get involved and help spread Olympic fever! The centre makes an ideal day out for family and friends.” Simon Ricketts, Manager at the Lee Valley White Water Centre, explained: “The beauty of white water rafting is that it is open to everyone. Fresh Bread and Lots More Served Up Daily A husband and wife team have given up successful professional careers - to bake bread. Richard Copsey was working as a Spanish teacher, at Dame
Alice Owens School, Potters Bar, and Kate Smith was at polling experts Ipsos MORI when they decided that what they really wanted to do was feed people.
“I have always had a passion for cooking and a few years ago I started baking my own breads.” Richard told EN Magazine. “Friends and family would come round and try my bread and ask me to bake some for them. Before long word quickly spread and within months I had a small production line going serving the local area.”

Richard, who bakes the bread, and Kate, who specialises in home-made cakes, have now completed the transformation of Holtwhites Bakery & Deli which opened to the public on Saturday July 2. Richard, 39, said: “Demand for our bread has been fantastic. People are tired of “pappy” commercially produced bread and want something that not only looks good but tastes delicious. We use wonderful organic flour and we give our dough plenty of time to rise. This results in naturally

Richard and Kate hope that their bakery and deli will appeal to local residents and workers, as well as foodies from afar, who are in pursuit of great produce. Their artisan breads, pastries and cakes are hand-crafted and baked daily on the premises, using only natural ingredients, traditional baking methods and an obsession with quality. To accompany their baked goods, they have carefully selected a range of deli items
including farmhouse cheeses, charcuterie, wines, whole leaf teas and hand roasted coffees. EN Magazine went along to the opening of Holtwhites Bakery and Deli to try out the breads on offer. “It was great to see that the opening of the new bakery was well supported with customers queuing out the door. I was able to buy both a selection of rolls and a multigrain loaf. However the selections of cheese and pates were all too tempting and I had to buy some. I was really pleased that the price of the loaf was comparable to that paid in a supermarket, starting from £1.90 for a large loaf” “The bread was still warm when I got home and with just a coating of butter on a slice it tasted fantastic. Two days later and I am still munching my way through my loaf, cheese and pate. I will definitely be returning to Holtwhites Bakery and Deli for my bread in the future.”
Don’t let the cold drive you indoors The longest day of the year has now past, yet we still have long sunny days and warm evenings to enjoy. The longer evenings give the opportunity for garden parties, or to just sit out in gardens with friends and family, on patios, decking and around barbecue. But as the days get shorter and the evenings get longer, the need to move in doors, wrap up in warmer clothing or bring the party to an end comes with the chill of night. BRITISH WEATHER – TOO HOT TO SLEEP? Many people are finding, especially at the moment, that they are not sleeping very well and when you look into it a little bit further, it’s not hard to see the reason why. We would all sleep better if the bedroom was cooler than the rest of the house, but this is often not the case because heat tends to travel upwards and most bedrooms are upstairs. Whilst fans can be a good idea, they can also be noisy, which may add to your sleep being disturbed. We would suggest that it is better to cool the room with a fan a couple of hours before you sleep, rather than putting the fan on as you go to bed. The next obvious and very important point is to make sure that your bed has plenty of padding and a good spring unit. This acts as a glorified bellows and as you turn over, pulls air in and out through the mattress, allowing it to air itself. If you are too hot in bed you will find that it is a natural response to turn/roll/move yourself into a cooler spot or place because you cannot get comfortable. Some of the cheaper memory foams are renowned for retaining the heat to make them more pliable to your shape and size, but this can be a bad thing because it does not let the heat penetrate through. It uses your own body heat to mould itself and boomerangs it back to you. We all know that a bad night’s sleep can ruin the following day and even start to upset your health and lifestyle. Could Your Child Make It On The Stage? This summer young people can be kept active and entertained by working with local professional Theatre Company ‘Skewbald’ to put on a show in a week! Led by Skewbald’s Artistic director and actors, the young people will become the cast of an exciting musical version of either Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ or ‘The Tempest’. courses, participants will have fun exploring the stories and characters through drama games and improvisation and learn parts, songs and dance routines, ready to give a private performance with lights, music and fantastic costumes on the final day for friends and family in the Dugdale Theatre. “We all have fantastic fun on our summer performance courses. Dangerous dogs brought to heel A new scheme to tackle the menace of dangerous dogs was launched in Edmonton last week by Enfield Council, which will run across all the parks in the borough. ‘Parkguard’ will work with Enfield Council parks patrol officers to identify and tackle dogs which could cause problems for park users, and offer advice and training to people who want help in controlling their pets. Cllr Christine Hamilton, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, went on the beat in Jubilee Park during the launch said “Since this time last year there have been a number of dog attacks on people, their dogs and other animals in our parks, so Enfield Council is
taking this very seriously. “ “Many residents have told us that they really enjoy using our parks and open spaces but fear some of the dogs they encounter running free in them, especially if they have young children. The Parkguard scheme aims to deal with dogs which need training, and will help educate owners on how they can keep their pets under control in a public place. “ “I went out with the Parkguard officer, to see the kinds of problems that they encounter and the good work that they do. It was interesting speaking to members of the public and hearing their views and concerns about dogs on the loose, this is a big issue.” The scheme will run for a 12 month period and will also take referrals from police and the housing department to educate owners of nuisance dogs.

Banking Crisis – Where did the Banks Start? You can barely turn on the news these days without hearing about the banking industry, whether its some one blaming the economy on the banking crisis or the amounts of money being paid in bonuses, but what is the history of banking in England? The Bank of England Museum tells the story of the Bank of England, from its foundation in 1694, to its role today as the United Kingdom’s central bank. The historical displays include material drawn from the Bank’s own collections of books, documents, silver, prints, paintings, banknotes, coins and photographs. There is a display of gold, including Roman and modern gold bars, alongside pikes and muskets
once used to defend the Bank. Computer technology and audio visual displays explain the Bank’s present day role.

Global History - Just a Stone’s Throw Away! If history is of interest, then there is no better place to visit than The British Museum. The world famous British Museum was founded in 1753 by Act of Parliament, from the collections of Sir Hans Sloane. Soldering - Protecting Our Borders Through Time The National Army Museum has always offered its exhibitions, galleries, and public events programme to the public free of charge. The museum communicates the importance of the history and heritage of the British Army, to the importance of the role the Army plays in the global community today. The Museum also works to support the remembrance of those who have lived and died in the service of the nation. Highlights of the National Army Museum include a 40 square metre model of the Battle of Waterloo (1815) with over 70,000 model soldiers brought to life with specially commissioned films that explore the conflict, the soldiers who fought it and the controversy surrounding the model’s construction. World War One (1914-18) installations include infantry soldiers from 1915 and 1917, a machine gun team, a trench periscope, a reconstructed dug-out from 1917 and a full-scale replica of a tank. An area dedicated to Afghanistan, sheds light on the intensity of the recent fighting and the British Army’s long history in the region. The exhibition also contrasts the Gulf War with the most recent Iraq War and looks into the British involvement in Sierra Leone.

East Germany, used to be impossible to visit, Now it’s easy with connecting trains all the way through from St Pancras. Stay in beautiful Binz, packed with grand whitewashed villas and unpretentious restaurants serving up freshly caught fish, and spend your days relaxing on the white beaches of the sweeping sandy bay: its shallow water is perfect for the kids. Greece Rhodes and Corfu are package holiday staples, but the island of Kea is more popular with Athenians for good reason.
