BAINBRIDGE ISLAND REVIEW Starbucks comes to Bainbridge: Love it or hate it, Starbucks is coming to Bainbridge Island. The coffee giant — considered by some to be one of the worst examples of big business monopolizing a craft industry, and by others the quintessential Seattle success story — is expected to open the doors of the newly announced Island Village Shopping Center location by late August. The Bainbridge store will offer unique and exclusive coffees, unavailable in most other stores, in addition to its staple blends. Also unique to Bainbridge and other select stores is the availability of the Starbucks Clover Brewing System, a unique brewing device which prepares each individual cup of coffee within 1 degree Fahrenheit of the blend’s ideal temperature. “I’m super-excited about Bainbridge,” store manager Rusten Harris said. “I have always had a big passion for coffee, so they actually approached me about the store.” Harris has been a Starbucks employee for nearly 10 years and began his career as a part-time barista. He has been the manager of the Poulsbo store for some time and, after a recent company expedition to visit coffee farms in Costa Rica, Harris is excited to move on and manage a new store from the ground up and get island customers excited about exotic coffees. — BainbridgeReview.com

is hopping all around these days. Owner Laura Kneib has moved from her home’s small kitchen to a location in downtown Bremerton to sell her soap. She will move again in several months when the location just up the road is finished. “It’s very exciting,” Kneib said of the move. “This is just a wonderful area. It’s so alive.” The new shop is on Fifth Street just around the corner from the Admiral Theatre and across the street from Cornerstone Coffee. When she moves again, she will have her own address at 530 5th St. F.R.O.G. isn’t just a cute name, it stands for From Reclaimed Oil and Glycerin. Since she started in 2012, Kneib’s recycled nearly two tons of waste vegetable oil, cardboard, junk mail and biodiesel glycerin. Kneib takes vegetable oil from restaurants and uses it as one of the main ingredients to create her soap, along with essential oils and other ingredients. The oil is carefully filtered, making it safe for humans to use. All the packaging in which her soap comes in is recycled, down to the labels on which she prints her little green frogs on. Primm opened her shop on June 30 with five employees and a smattering of customers waiting for her to cut the ribbon. The owner admitted to being a bit teary-eyed due to lack of sleep and emotions running high since her military husband deployed a bit earlier than expected. He was the one who had encouraged her to open the shop after seeing her success at freelance baking. “This was his dream,” she said, wiping a tear from her eye. “I was just so overwhelmed with joy. Our sales were off the charts.” On her first day, she made 540 cupcakes. By closing, there were fewer than a dozen left in the display case. — CentralKitsapReporter. com

NORTH KITSAP HERALD Miss Viking Fest talks about suicide prevention: Natalie Myers will be a junior in fall at North Kitsap High School. She plays basketball and volleyball and won the Doug McKay Scholarship en route to winning the 2014 Miss Viking Fest title. Unless she tells you about it, you wouldn’t know that she was depressed and suicidal during her sophomore year. She sought help, and wants others to talk openly about depression and suicide so they aren’t afraid to seek help, too. Teen suicide prevention is Myers’ platform as Miss Viking Fest. “I remember going home after school everyday and crying and not knowing what to do,” Myers said. “It was tough. I told my mom, ‘I’ve never felt this low in my life.’ I hit rock bottom.” According to the Kitsap County Core Public Health Indicators report, the suicide death rate in Kitsap in 2013 was 100 per 100,000 residents. A total of 1,920 eighth-graders reported seriously considering suicide in 2012, an increase of 6.81 percent from 2006. There have been two teen suicides at NKHS in the last
