More Kudos Bainbridge teams compete at Globals What is Pandemonium? It’s the Destination Imagination Improv Team Challenge for 2014. The Pandemonium challenge requires Destination Imagination teams to rapidly put together and then to perform a skit in which a character from the past and modern day character use the skills and tools of their occupations to deal with a tournament-supplied pandemonium while incorporating an unrelated character wearing stage make-up. For Bainbridge Independent, Pandemonium is not a problem, just an opportunity. Two Bainbridge Independent teams mastered the challenge at the state tournament and qualified for Globals, an international celebration of creativity held in Knoxville, Tennessee. At Globals, the Bainbridge high school team, the GangSTARS, placed 16th out of 73 improv teams. The elementary team from Bainbridge, Infinite Ideas, came through

with exceptionally strong performances in both the Pandemonium challenge and the Instant Challenge. In a stadium with over 17,000 participants, volunteers, and supporters the Infinite Ideas team learned that they had placed second out of 88 national and international teams. They were overjoyed when they were called to the stage to receive individual medals and a beautiful team trophy. Destination Imagination is a nonprofit, volunteerled, cause-driven organization. The goal? To inspire and equip students to become the next
generation of innovators and leaders. Destination Imagination offers six team challenges, all of which incorporate STEM and the arts: Stuctural, Technical, Improv, Scientific, Fine Arts and Early Learning. The Destination Imagination program encourages teams to develop creativity, teamwork, and problem solving skills and to use these skills to come up with an innovative solution to their chosen challenge. Each team challenge is open-ended, which enables teams to experience the creative process “from imagination to
innovation.” Participants develop patience, flexibility, persistence and respect for others. Destination Imagination also has a “no interference” policy. Team managers help teams to understand the rules and to develop new skills, but teams must work independently to solve their chosen challenge. Teams showcase their team challenge solutions at regional, state and global tournaments. There are currently eight parent-sponsored Destination Imagination Teams on Bainbridge Island, and Destination Imagination will grow

in 2014-15 thanks to a grant from the Bainbridge Schools Foundation. The grant will enable the formation of many new Destination Imagination teams with two to seven members per team. The support will include coordination at the district and building levels, meeting space, team manager training, and possibly even skills workshops for Destination Imagination team members. In weekly meetings, team members will play improve and acting games, practice performance-based and technical Instant Challenges, and work on their team challenge solutions. Destination Imagination
team members will have fun building lasting friendships while developing new skills to take their own ideas “from imagination to innovation.” Interested in Destination Imagination? Bainbridge Independent is sponsoring Destination Imagination Theater Camp — coordinated by Judy Levine and featuring talented teachers and performance artists Guy Sidora and Corinna Munter — at Hyla Middle School.
