Whidbey fans gain Seahawks’ attention

The rally will start at 6 p.m. Friday at Flyers Restaurant and Brewery.

“We’re excited and looking forward to it,” said Jason Tritt, Flyers owner. “It’s going to be an awesome time.”

A rally this past weekend in Mount Vernon drew about 200 Seahawks fans, and Tritt said he is expecting a similar number for Friday’s Oak Harbor rally.

The temperature is supposed to be in the 50s with no wind or rain, but Tritt said he is ready for any weather.

He will be raising a tent and heating the restaurant patio.

Seahawks pride in the area led to Oak Harbor’s selection as an official rally site.

“It’s because of the dedication to the

Seahawks and everything else we’ve already done,” said Michelle Curry, co-host for the event.

The other co-host is Drea Park.

Recent rallies at Deception Pass Bridge and the Coupeville Wharf helped demonstrate the 12th Man spirit among Whidbey Island residents.

Teresa Besaw and Kory Dyer were the organizers behind the 12th Man Pass and the 12th Man Wharf events, both of which drew about 150 Seahawk fans each.

During the rally Friday, there will be trivia, a DJ and raffle, Curry said.

The raffle prizes are being provided by the Seahawks organization, Curry said.

During the last official Seahawks rally she attended, Curry said preseason tickets were given away, as well as an autographed football helmet.

Since the organization is bringing the prizes later this week, it was unknown what the giveaways will be at the Oak Harbor event.

Food and drink specials will also be avail-

able during the rally, Tritt said.

Each official rally location will have different people who are involved with the Seahawks showing up.

Curry said she and the other Oak Harbor organizers are hopeful a player will attend, but nothing has been disclosed by the Seahawks.

The Seahawks play the San Francisco 49ers at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, in the NFC Championship game at CenturyLink Field.

The winner will advance to Super Bowl Feb. 2 to face the winner of the AFC title game between New England and Denver.

Louie-G’s Pizza in Oak Harbor also is hosting its own Seahawks rally at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Louie-G’s is partnering with China City to put on the event and will sell raffle tickets with winners getting Seahawks memorabilia.

Both restaurants are offering 12 percent off meals from 4-7 p.m. Saturday to anyone wearing Seahawks gear.

“And 49 percent is added to the ticket of anyone wearing Niners gear,” joked Dyer, manager of China City.

OH gives $5K for hydroplane races in bay

Michelle Curry, a loan officer at Peoples Bank, is organizing an event with hydroplane races Aug. 16-17 in the water just off the marina.

She’s inviting Harley Davidson clubs in the region to come watch the speedy, noisy races and join in the festivities.

She proposes calling the event “Hogs and Rooster Tails.”

In response to a number of requests, the Navy is extending the scoping period for the Environmental Impact Statement on the EA-18G Growlers.

Comments are now being accepted until Friday, Jan. 31.

Purpose of the extension is “to ensure all surrounding communities have ample opportunity to provide input,” Navy officials said in a prepared news release.

Recently, the Navy was criticized by the City of Port Townsend and San Juan County.

Johnson will serve as chair of tourism board Lodging tax collections increased in 2013 Island County Commissioner Jill Johnson will serve as chairwoman of the Island County Joint 2 Percent Committee on Tourism for 2014.

Johnson was elected in Freeland on Jan. 2 at the committee’s monthly meeting. The committee’s work is funded from a portion of the revenue generated by lodging taxes paid by overnight visitors to Whidbey and Camano islands.

Other 2014 officers include the following: Vice Chairman Chet Ross, representing the Freeland Chamber of Commerce; Secretary Joanne Lechner, representing Unincorporated South Whidbey Lodging; and Treasurer Dianne Binder, representing the Town of Coupeville.

The 18-member Joint Tourism Committee was founded in 2004. Since its formation, the number of overnight visitors has steadily increased each year.

As of last November, lodging tax collections were 7.8 percent higher than at the same time one year ago.

Other members of the committee are: Melanie Ford-Bissey, Camano Island Lodging; Karen Daum, Camano Island Chamber of Commerce; Gregg Lanza, Unincorporated North Whidbey Lodging;

At 12:31 a.m., a San Juan Avenue resident reported that a woman moved into his home without his knowledge or permission.

He said his unwanted roommate wouldn’t let him in the residence.

PBY Memorial takes flight

Leadership of the PBY Memorial on Whidbey Island Naval Air Station property are gearing up to relocate its museum and its PBY Catalina aircraft to a location along State Highway 20.

“This is a big step for us,” said PBY Memorial Foundation President Wil Shellenberger, who took office in 2013.

The PBY Memorial Foundation was established in 1998 and is dedicated to the preservation the PBY Catalina and Seaplane Base artifacts, as well as items from throughout American military history.

As part of its four-phase program, it has long been the foundation’s goal to acquire its own property and build a hangar-style structure to house aircraft and other artifacts.

The memorial is currently housed in the Naval Heritage Center on the Seaplane Base.

The foundation is in negotiations now with Flowers Marine which sits adjacent to the new property and have the same owners.

Shellenberger said the foundation hopes to have something worked out within the coming weeks.

The foundation’s five-year lease with the NAS Whidbey Island ends in April.

“We’re pretty confident we’ll work something out to lease at first and then buy,” Shellenberger said.

Jimmy Flowers, owner of Flowers Marine, said that the property is available to the foundation to lease or purchase.

However, Flowers said, discussions are in the preliminary stages and hinge on the foundation’s ability to sell the idea to the residents of Oak Harbor.

“They’ve got a big job ahead of them,” Flowers said.

“They want to community to buy them a museum. Is that going to happen? I don’t know. Their job now is to sell

If relocated off-base, Shellenberger said, the foundation will have more public visibility and an easier time starting a “full-throttle” fundraising effort.

Shellenberger said he expects the memorial to move into a temporary location after the lease with the Navy has expired, so they can raise funds for a new memorial building at the Highway 20 location.

Phase three in the foundation’s mission was acquiring the PBY Catalina, said William Stein, memorial director.

Once that was accomplished in 2010, “the clock started ticking,” Stein said.

The PBY Catalina currently rests next to the Naval Heritage building and has been treated with a protective coating and the body of the aircraft covered in tarps for protection during winter.

“That plane needs to be hangared,” he said.

“Whidbey Island weather will have it for lunch.”

But they would also like to acquire additional aircraft for the museum, and the building would be designed to allow them to expand.

After many years working to acquire and then find a location for the “Whale” at Ault Field Road and Langley Avenue in Oak Harbor, the project came to an abrupt halt in 2012.

Construction workers hit an underground fuel tank on the parcel just days after a triumphant groundbreaking, stalling the A-3 Skywarrior project indefinitely.

Stein said that serious discussions about including the A-3 Skywarrior would happen down the road, but that the solution would be “great

for both sides.”

Representatives for the A-3 Skywarrior Foundation could not be reached for comment.

Stein said it is the hope of the foundation that the move and expansion off base would allow the memorial to become an easily accessed destination for history and military buffs, the education community, as well as residents and tourists.

Recent donations to the museum include a 1918 Red Cross nurse’s uniform, and a Navy pilot’s helmet and mask from 1957.

“We have a wide variety of things here, not just Navy,” Stein said.

A lawsuit filed against Oak Harbor claiming the city desecrated ancient Indian burial grounds may be resolved without a trial.

All of the parties named in the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community’s lawsuit, as well as various insurance providers, are meeting in a mediation session Thursday, Jan. 30 in a Seattle law office, said Oak Harobr City Administrator Larry Cort.

John Cooper, with the state Arbitration and Mediation Service, will serve as mediator in the discussion.

The purpose of the meeting is to identify any “common ground” among the parties; all the parties agreed to participate in an early mediation, Cort said.

Cort said he couldn’t comment on whether the city may propose a settlement offer during the discussion.

The Swinomish Tribe originally demanded $9 million in damages from the city in a complaint for damages filed this past summer. The claim accused city

officials of violating law and breaching their legal duty by digging up the known site of an ancient tribal village and burial ground during the 2011 road project on Pioneer Way. The Swinomish Tribe followed up the claim last June with a lawsuit that names the city and three companies involved in the project‚ Perteet, KBA Construction Management and Strider Construction Management.

The reburial of the human remains and other artifacts will likely wait until after the case is resolved.

Archeologists and members of the Swinomish Tribe spent more than two years sifting through dirt piles on public and private land after the first human bones were identified and the project was stalled.

Archaelogists recovered more than 4,300 human bones or bone fragments, nearly 17,000 non-human bone fragments and more than 44,000 “pre-contact or historic artifacts or artifact fragments,” according to a declaration by M. Brian Cladoosby, chairman of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community.

Greenhouse Florist and Nursery is still going strong after 60 years in Oak Harbor

For 60 years the Greenhouse Florist and Nursery has been a fixture in the Oak Harbor business community.

Siblings and owners, Henry Vanden Haak and Audrey Butler, said the business has been in the family since 1954, but the business itself has been around for nearly 70 years. It used to be in two locations: one on Midway where Traders Village is, and at a second spot called Antone’s Florist.

It didn’t move to its current location on Seventh Avenue until around 1980.

Their parents moved from Holland where their father had been a vegetable grower.

It wasn’t until purchasing a business did their mother become involved with the florist and nursery industry.

But as kids, the trade came to Butler and Vanden Haak naturally.

All five of the children were originally part of the business, but over the years some have bowed out, leaving Butler and Vanden Haak to carry on their parent’s tradition.

When the siblings took over the business, a lawyer gave them a little piece of advice for working together: flip a coin when they were at an impasse for a decision.

Over the years, Vanden Haak and Butler have found their niches with the business. Butler takes care of the florist side of the business, while Vanden Haak focuses on the nursery. Of course, as with all small businesses, there is overlap. If something needs to be done, they’ll both

“I’ll lug a tree and he’ll design flowers” Butler said.

One of the keys to staying open for so long is following the economy. Making adjustments and being able to “go with the flow” and treating their customers well has helped with the business’ longevity, Butler said.

“That knowledge helps people, and that is a successful business model,” Vanden Haak said.

“Every month we’re planning something,” Butler said.

One of the features at the store is Vanden Haak’s bonsai trees. He started learning the art of bonsai trees in the late ’80s.

“It’s a never ending piece of art,” Vanden Haak said.

“It’s constantly evolving and changing.”

It’s a life project you sign up for, Butler said.

“You are the master of its change,” Vanden Haak said.

For Butler, her enjoyment comes from helping customers.

“A hundred different things could be going on, and we’re there to help them and walk them through it,” Butler said.

For example, one customer came in whose mother had recently died, and she wanted the arrangement to represent her mother for the service.

“It’s taking all those bits and pieces of her mother’s life to make it a personal piece,” Butler said.

Vanden Haak and Butler are hoping to pass the torch to the next generation of family members. All of their kids have worked there off and on as they got to be old enough, and currently some are working at the business.

“That’s what our parents set it up to be,” Vanden Haak said. “It’s offered to those members.”

But ultimately the enjoyment of the job is what keeps the siblings happy after all these years.

“Watering plants, having your fingers in the dirt — it takes you back home to where it starts,” Vanden Haak said.

EIS EXTENSION CONTINUED FROM A1 David King, the mayor of Port Townsend, said he and the city council complained that they were not notified about the EIS process or offered a public scoping meeting.

Public meetings were held during December in Coupeville, Oak Harbor and Anacortes. The scoping period began Sept. 5, with the original deadline for closing it set for Jan. 3.

King described the Navy’s new Growlers, which are replacing the EA-6B Prowlers, as “pretty loud” and “very much noticed” by Port Townsend residents.

Though saying the Navy originally overlooked Port Townsend in the scoping process, King said he is encouraged that the Navy extended the scoping period.

“It seems like, in asking for it, we were able to get it,” King said.

Port Townsend’s city council also asked for an additional public scoping meeting, King said, which the Navy does not appear to be offering at this time.

Still, King said, the Navy’s response was “a step in that direction” and he remains hopeful that Port Townsend will continue to be included as the EIS progresses.

An additional opportunity for public input will held after the EIS statement is written and a draft version is made public in 2015.

It doesn’t seem likely that Port Townsend’s city council would be taking a formal position on the Growler, King said, but added members believe it is important

that community member’s comments, whatever they might be, be included in the EIS. The San Juan County Council sent a letter to the Navy on Jan. 2, asking for an extension of the EIS scoping period by 60 days and for a local public input meeting.

“At 6.5 nautical miles from the runways at NAS Whidbey, the San Juan Islands are geographically closer than Anacortes or Coupeville,” said council Chairman Jamie Stephens in a letter.

“Therefore, we feel a comment period extension and a local meeting are in order.”

Public affairs officers for the EIS could not be reached for comment.

The EIS scoping period is gathering information about the environmental impact of

basing two additional expeditionary Growler squadrons and three additional aircraft to the training squadron at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

The Navy uses Outlying Field Coupeville for carrier touch-and-go landing practices. Pre-deployment qualification. Operations at both OLF Coupeville and the main base in Oak Harbor are being considered in the EIS. The Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve, or COER, a group which sued the Navy in July over jet noise, said in a statement Monday that it was good to see the Navy responding to public requests.

“People in areas outside Coupeville, Oak Harbor and Anacortes have gotten the Navy to hear their voices, raised in unison, asking for

fairness and a hearing,” said Michael Monson, president of COER. “The Navy has hopefully realized their error in not listening to the many people affected by Growler noise,” Monson said. “COER is still disturbed that the Navy doesn’t feel it necessary to conduct scoping meetings, as they should have done, in these outlying areas.”

U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen praised the Navy’s decision Tuesday to extend the public comment period.

“This is good news for residents of Whidbey Island and neighboring counties,” Larsen said.

“The Navy’s decision to extend the public comment period is a direct response to requests from community members and shows the

Navy is participating in this process in good faith. While this extension may not be as long as some had hoped, it gives community members nearly three more weeks to submit comments.”

“I encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity to share their suggestions and concerns.”

A city staff member asked Curry, who was involved in many other events, including the Oak Harbor Music Festival, to create the event.

“I want to see Oak Harbor as a destination city, not just a pass-through city,” Curry said.

Curry started going to races last year immersing herself into the exciting, but “very expensive” sport. She said she realized that Oak Harbor will provide a perfect venue.

“We can provide one of the best views of a race probably in the state of Washington,” she said.

Bayshore Drive and Barrington Drive east of downtown will be closed down so that residents can watch the races. In addition, Curry said she’ll be selling passes to walk around the marina and special “suites” with close-up views of the half- and quarter-mile circular laps.

Seattle Drag and Ski will run the races themselves.

The races are very competitive and highly regulated.

Up to 120 teams travel the

racing circuit; Curry said from 50 to 75 boats will likely come to Oak Harbor.

She expects boats up to the “grand prix” class to participate. The grand prix class is one step below the giant “unlimited class” that wow the crowds at Seafair.

The hydroplane racers lost the popular “Tastin’ n Racin’” event in Bellevue, Curry said, and she hopes Oak Harbor will fill that void.

Since the event will likely attract people from Seattle and beyond, the Oak Harbor City Council agreed to give $5,000 from lodging taxes toward the race.

The 2 percent money is earmarked for tourismboosting events that bring in people from outside the community.

Curry asked for $10,000 and questioned whether all of the other events sharing in the limited funding lured people from off the island.

Nevertheless, she said she is grateful for the funds.

Mayor Scott Dudley, who’s an outspoken proponent of adding more com-

munity events, said he’s excited about the new race.

“It’s not only good for the economy and will bring individuals to the city, it’s another event where the community can come together,” Dudley said.

Yet it won’t be the first time hydroplanes have raced in the harbor. Businessman Jim Woessner was among a group of young people from Oak Harbor who raced in the 1970s; the Fourth of July races was a tradition for many years.

He was only 14 when he started racing on a threeboat team that included his older brother. His boat had a pair of jaws painted on it, he said, because he “was pretty infamous for running into other boats.”

Woessner said he has stayed in touch with the hydroplane racing community and is helping Curry with the event.

“It’s going to be very exciting,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of noise and a lot of water, a lot of rooster tails.”

Curry had never been to a hydroplane race until she agreed to take on the event last year.

Chris Sublet, the harbormaster at the marina, came up with the idea of hosting a race in the city.

Learning a painful lesson about use of slang in coverage It’s the news articles that you believe will be the least controversial that sometimes land you in the hottest of water.

Case in point, our annual “Year in Review” article published in the Jan. 1 edition of the Whidbey NewsTimes.

In that article, which summarized major stories from the past year, the reporter relied on the common modern slang term “haters” in place of the word “critics.”

That was a big mistake.

While younger people typically call one another “haters,” and you hear the term frequently on television these days, it is not yet common usage as determined by the English dictionary.

For relying on slang rather than commonly accepted vernacular, the reporter and newspaper have apologized to the South Whidbey group that was offended, the Old Goats — Fully Informed Voters.

Since the Year in Review was published, however, word of mouth about the article transformed the use of the word “haters” in the article to “hate group.” The newspaper received emails from people who admittedly hadn’t read the article, but were appalled the newspaper would call the Old Goats a “hate group.”

We did not use that term.

As I assured several of the group’s members, we don’t believe the Old Goats to be a hate group and would certainly never use that term when referring to them. Quite the contrary, we hold in high regard to any group that emphasizes civic involvement.

The fact is, as a newspaper, we should employ the KISS Principle — keep it simple, stupid. Our responsibility is to avoid unecessary complexity or confusion in our coverage. This means avoiding “governmentese,” which sometimes seems to be a language unto itself.

It’s our job to clearly interpret information, but to avoid terms that might lead to confusion. For example, rather than a term like “revenue revision,” it likely makes sense to say in the story that a “tax increase” is in the offing.

In summarizing the news of the past year, the reporter attempted to be clear and concise, but miserably failed, offending the Old Goats in the process.

It is a lesson that we as journalists have learned the hard way and are determined to not repeat.

Jet noise

Vision for Coupeville is not one shared by all Editor, “Growler Joe” Kunzler, who calls himself “the greatest thing to happen to the pro-OLF cause – ever,” says keeping Outlying Field Coupeville open and bringing in even more Growlers will not destroy the Coupeville community.

“Coupeville is not going to be destroyed,” he told me in a Dec. 14 Whidbey News-Times comment, “Just changed. Two very different things.

It’ll be a Navy and county government town within a few years.”

In a Sept. 8 comment to Truman Lowry, he wrote: “My support of an EIS is in part to wear them down for three to five years so buying them out becomes the star option.” And if the noise and pollution don’t wear them down, there’s always eminent domain to get rid of them.

“The Navy will issue a Draft EIS in mid-2015,” Joe wrote. “By then, many civilians will beat feet and the cost of a new OLF will be more than eminent domain. The final EIS isn’t due BTW until mid-2016. Checks cut. Civilians evacuated or forced to cope.”

From his home in SedroWoolley, Growler Joe has designed Coupeville’s future. No more unpatriotic, Navy-hating, anti-American, whining civilians. Just more and more squadrons of Growlers flying, day and night, over the Island County Courthouse, Whidbey Naval Hospital and the empty shops on Front Street.

Consider the sacrifices of those now serving Editor, While you publish both sides of the noise complaints and opinions from both or all sides on Whidbey Island and perhaps some opinions shared by those of the San Juan Islands, please allow this humble third opinion.

You, all of you, who would disparage a Navy, a nation, our military in uniform and those civilians who support them because you are inconvenienced by jet noise, need to know, or be reminded of, something of which you are obviously unaware.

The enemy is not in plain sight, and they are determined. They still kill even today. Every few days this forwardoperating base, FOB Shank, named for Michael Shank, comes under mortar fire.

You, all of you, either keep us here by your vote and or by your silence.

How are they doing? Do you even know or care, or are you consumed by the jet noise over Whidbey Island?

Those kinds of articles get buried in page six somewhere.

The noise we hear in Afghanistan sounds like a ship’s United States Navy General Quarters alarm, and it is loud.

It happens at all hours. It is followed by an explosion which you pray will only hit thin air. You only have seconds to contemplate a possible future.

As we here respond to those alarms, we all grab our battle rattle — helmets and vests — and take cover with just a few seconds of warning.

During the last few months, Shank has come under attack at least 50 times, sometimes three or four times a day.

Your sailors assigned to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, your U.S. Navy and Marines, and some civilians, are here in Afghanistan, right now, reading SEE MORE LETTERS, A7

Clarifying effects of noise exposure Editor, Once again I would like to attempt to clarify issues regarding the effects of noise exposure.

Exposure Time Guidelines Accepted standards for recommended permissible exposure time for continuous time weighted average noise, according to National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Center for Disease Control, 2002. For every three dBAs over 85dBA, the permissible exposure time before possible damage can occur is cut in half.

According to NIOSH part of CDC a U.S. Federal Agency, the continuous dB permissible exposure times are as follows: 85dB — eight hours 88dB — four hours 91dB — two hours 94dB — one hour 97dB — 30 minutes 100dB — 15 minutes 103dB — 7.5 minutes 106dB — 3.75 minutes 109dB — 1.875 minutes 112dB — .9375 minutes 115dB — .46875 minutes The above chart explains, quite clearly, how much noise plus length of time one can be exposed to noise before possible/probable damage to hearing will occur.

The damage will occur at the higher frequencies first then affect the mid and low frequencies.

At the higher frequencies we hear the consonants of the English language and we perceive clarity, when the loss travels to the lower frequencies then loudness, how much one has to increase volume, is affected.

In other words, people with high frequency hearing loss state that others are‚ “mumbling,” Usually they even deny hearing loss because they hear, “perfectly fine,” without any increase in volume because the low

frequencies have yet to be affected.

The noise maps that we have seen show levels anywhere from 30-75 (dB) which is a day/night average. Almost all citizens have no grasp of what day/ night averaging means. It is a somewhat more complicated formula that the U.S. Navy uses to, supposedly, explain the amount of damaging noise level we may be exposed to. Unfortunately this is not the case since hearing loss and tinnitus does NOT occur as a day/ night average but occurs in real time.

Day/night averaging, usually measured over a period of one year, is like saying that ones feet are in boiling water and the head is in the freezer that the “average” body temperature will then be 50 degrees.

Hearing loss and/or tinnitus is the most common disability among Navy personnel. The most compensated disability in the armed forces is for hearing loss and tinnitus. There are many steps being taken to reduce this trend since billions of our tax dollars are being spent on this injury.

For citizens to politicize hearing loss/tinnitus is a disservice to our veterans, military personnel and private citizens. Hearing loss is a health issue, public and private, and is recognized as a non-visible, isolating handicap.

We must recognize that the effects noise, no matter where it comes from, will affect all citizens no matter what race, religion, sex, location or political persuasion.

Didn’t read letter as ‘for’ or ‘against’ Editor, With regard to Carol Byng’s letter earlier this month suggesting turning military property into a cemetery, I took it to mean that if we had a cemetery here, we might be forced to acknowledge the hundreds of folks who lay down their lives for our freedoms.

It has become very clear that some local folks believe that their personal wealth comes before national security.

Perhaps a graveyard would raise their conscienceness?

I didn’t take it as “for” or “against” military. I took it as a “don’t forget.”

Old Goats deserve public apology Editor, I am appalled by the article in the Whidbey NewsTimes in which the implication was made that the Old Goats lunch group is a group of “haters.”

First, let me remind you that a good journalist simply reports news as clearly and honestly as possible after careful investigation.

It seems that, now, what is done is to use a position to promote one’s personal ideologies. This is not journalism, this is propaganda.

I have been to several of the lunches the Old Goats have sponsored. I found them to be balanced and just because some of the attendees may not agree with a particular political position does not constitute hate.

It is simply a difference of opinion and constitutes freedom of expression as protected by the Bill of Rights. I don’t think I need to quote the dictionary as I trust you are smart enough

to know the difference.

As a former subscriber to the News-Times, I am infuriated by your statements, and you have succeeded in maintaining your position as a paper with which I would not even wrap my fish scraps.

I think an apology to the Roses and the Old Goats is in order, and this apology should be just as publicly obvious as the remarks your paper made were.

Reporter should be reprimanded Editor, The Jan. 1 edition of your newspaper had a front page article titled “2013: A Year in the Life of Whidbey Island.”

On page two the article describes the “Old Goats” as “haters.”

I have been attending the Old Goats meetings for many years and am personally very offended by the insinuation that I, and other attendees, are members of a group of “haters.”

Quite the contrary. The Old Goats luncheon meetings are conducted in a very civil manner and the goal is to help us citizens keep informed and educated on matters that should be of interest to all citizens.

Many of the speakers have been well known educators, Washington state and Island County elected officials, military personnel and civic leaders who attended to educate and inform us, not to spew hatred.

The “Old Goats” meetings are open to everyone, and attended by well educated and successful people, including educators, scientists, business people and many elected Island County officials, and “haters” is a truly vicious label.

The person who wrote that article is terribly misinformed and should be reprimanded.

Ronald Neil Thompson

Ronald Neil Thompson died suddenly at his home in Oak Harbor on Jan. 8, 2014, at the age of 55. Born in San Diego and raised in Oak Harbor, Ron was active in scouting, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also an honor student at Oak Harbor High School. Following high school, Ron attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating with distinction with a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering.

Following commissioning as an ensign, he entered flight school at NAS Pensacola and Kingsville. Ron received his “Wings of Gold” in April 1982 and flew under the call sign “ABE.” His first assignment was as an instructor pilot in Training Squadron TEN, Pensacola, training naval flight officers.

In 1983, he received orders to VA-128, Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, for training as a replacement pilot for the A-6E Intruder. He went on to serve with VA-95 and the “Green Lizards” in the Indian Ocean and two tours on the USS Enterprise, where he served as the personnel and tactics officer.

Cmdr.

Thompson returned to VA-128, VA-52, did a Western Deployment onboard the USS Carl Vinson and went “around the horn” aboard the USS Kitty Hawk.

With the “Knightriders” he served alternately as operations, maintenance and

administrative officer. In 1992, he returned to the “Golden Intruders” as administrative and operations officer.

Cmdr. Thompson received his first assignment away from flying in 1992 with his transfer to the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Receiving his master’s degree in national securities and strategic studies, he preceded to the USS Abraham Lincoln and deployment to the Persian Gulf. Assigned as the air operations officer, he also acted as the assistant extended drydocking selected restricted availability (EDRSA) officer. During EDRSA, Cmdr. Thompson completed a $200 million overhaul of the Lincoln, her first, and meeting all milestones, came in on time and under budget.

In 1998, Ron assumed duties as operations officer for NAS Whidbey. Responsible for all airfield operations, he also maintained oversight of OLF Coupeville, the Boardman, Ore., target complex and search and rescue coordination of the UH-3H in the North Puget Sound area.

Cmdr. Thompson was awarded Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (three), Navy Expeditionary Medal, Expert Pistol Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Meritorious Service Medal (two) and the Navy Achievement Medal (two).

Ron Thompson was married to the former Susie Rowand at the First United Methodist Church, Oak Harbor, on Sept. 6, 1980. They have one daughter, Hope, who graduated from Western Washington University last June. He was preceded in death by his father Norman Ronald Thompson and his stepfather Don Tighe.

Following retirement from the Navy on Dec. 31, 2000, Ron began a new career as a pilot for United Airlines.

become a first officer on the 737-300/500 and was sent to the San Francisco domicile.

After Sept. 11, 2001, Ron and 591 United Pilots were furloughed.

The winter of 2001-02 was spent as a lift operator at Mount Baker. Ron was the weekday king of chair 7, spending 80 days on the mountain. Ron followed this low-paying but highly enjoyable job by returning to his first love, flying, first with Mesa Airlines, then for Avenge in Afghanistan and, finally, his current job with DynCorp International in Baghdad, Iraq.

Ron is survived by his wife Susie, daughter Hope, brothers Don and Will, sisters Susan Gonzales and Laura Wilkie, mother Joyce Tighe, and numerous nieces and nephews. Judy touched many lives through the several roles she played in her life, including being a mother, grandmother, Presbyterian Church secretary and a director/ stage manager of community-theater. Judy had many interests, principally reading, creative writing and spending time with her family, but also including motorcycling, horseback riding and bridge. Mimi instituted many longstanding and cherished Pinkerton family traditions, for which her family will be forever thankful. She was devoted to her pets, which included horses, dogs and kitties. She was a life-long sports fan and especially enjoyed rooting for her favorite teams with her family. In Los Angeles, Judy was an avid Dodgers’ fan; in Seattle, her favorite team was the Sonics; and in Milwaukee, Judy and Steven bonded over watching nearly every Packer’s game together.

After several years without him, Judy has been reunited with her husband Stan.

Judy will be greatly missed by the family members she left behind, as well as by the many close friends that she made throughout her life.

Betty was married on Nov. 12, 1945, to David E. Baird in Hyde Park, Calif. Throughout their marriage, they moved from California to Texas, where they built and operated a bowling alley, Las Vegas, Southern California and Oregon. In 1977, they moved to Oak Harbor.

Betty worked various nursing positions wherever they moved. She spent 11 years as a staff nurse at United General Hospital, Sedro-Woolley, retiring in 1988.

Betty was an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, where she was a frequent volunteer for fund raisers and the agape dinners. She was a member of the Whidbey Golf and Country Club, where she enjoyed playing cards with her friends.

Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughter Carmel and husband Robert of Oak Harbor; grandson Charles Walter and wife Wendy of Oak Harbor; four great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Samantha, Colby and Cian Walter. She is also survived by her sisters-inlaw, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers Frank, Herman, Bernie and Bob. Judith Koehn Pinkerton, born Judith Lanelle Koehn Nov. 6, 1938, to Edward and Christine Koehn, passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2013, at the age of 75 in Milwaukee, Wis. Judy, or “Mimi” as she was known to her grandchildren, is survived by her siblings Roger, Michael and Patricia; sons Steven and Tad; daughtersin-law Lisa and Heidi; grandsons Brian, David and Blake; and granddaughters-by-marriage Susan and Jacquie.

Judy was born in Pasadena, Texas, and graduated from Renton High School in 1956.

After her marriage to Stanley Dale Pinkerton in 1958, Judy moved to New Haven, Conn., with Stan while he attended Yale University.

Loving mother Ruth Tarkon passed away at home peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 3, 2014. She will be missed by her sons Tony and Christopher, numerous family members and those whose life she touched.

She was born Ruth Elizabeth Hintz June 8, 1926, in Honey Grove, Texas, to John and Hilda Hintz. Ruth married Ted Tarkon in 1962 in Oak Harbor, where they owned their own business.

After retirement Ruth volunteered at the Navy hospital.

Ruth was an avid gardener, loved collecting dolls and made beautiful quilts.

PREP ROUNDUP ’Cats give Hawks tough time Heavily favored Mountlake Terrace defeated the host Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team 69-57 Friday, Jan. 10.

On paper, the Wildcats, winners of only two of their first 10 games, appeared to be no match for the ninth-ranked Hawks (4-1, 9-2). On the court, Oak Harbor proved otherwise.

Each time Mountlake Terrace surged ahead, the Wildcats pushed back. Oak Harbor simply ran out of time before it could answer the last Terrace spurt.

The ‘Cats stayed in the game with the three ball, outscoring the Hawks 33-18 from behind the arc.

Dyllan Harris paced Oak Harbor with 22 points, Drew Washington had 17, Zach Jones 10, Zach Gibbs six and Shane Huttula two.

Rough night for Wildcats Nothing seemed to go right as the Oak Harbor girls basketball team lost 67-18 at 10thranked Mountlake Terrace Friday, Jan. 10.

The Wildcats started the game with five consecutive turnovers and the Hawks (4-1, 9-3) rolled to a 23-6 first-quarter lead.

Then, Oak Harbor managed only two points in each of the next two quarters as Terrace led 51-8 at halftime and 63-10 at the end of the third period.

Annie Leete sank three three-pointers and scored 11 points for Oak Harbor, and Julie Jansen, Bryn Langrock and Deja Bunch each score two points.

Oak Harbor (0-5, 0-11) hosts Meadowdale (2-3, 4-8) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17.

Wolves bounce back for win After a night when little went right, the Coupeville boys basketball team got back on track with a 50-47 nonleague win over visiting Mount Vernon Christian Saturday, Jan. 11.

Winning nine of 11 events, the Oak Harbor High School swim team slid by Stanwood 104-65 at Vanderzicht Memorial Pool Monday, Jan. 13.

Two Wildcats won a pair of individual events: Joe Gorman (200-meter freestyle, 2:14.47; 400 free, 4:44.01) and Caley Powers (50 free, 26.27; 100 butterfly, 1:03.05).

Micha Geist took the 200 individual medley (2:28.93), and Cedric Cabigting captured the 100 backstroke (1:07).

All four individual winners also swam on winning relay teams.

Friday night, the Wolves fell 67-30 at Archbishop Murphy.

Mount Vernon Christian (6-7) opened the fourth period on a 10-0 run to lead 37-36.

The Wolves withstood the storm and then brewed their own with an 11-2 run to regain control.

Anthony Bergeron tallied 17 points and eight rebounds and Nick Streubel had 15 points and 12 boards to lead the Wolves. Wiley Hesselgrave chipped in with eight points, Aaron Trumbull five, Gavin O’Keefe two, Matt Shank two and Joel Walstad one.

Archbishop Murphy (3-2, 3-8) started Friday’s game on a 14-0 run and Coupeville never recovered.

Coupeville played without Streubel, who was recovering from an injury in the previous game.

Trumbull scored nine points, Walstad seven, Bergeron seven, O’Keefe six and Oscar Liquidano one.

Wolves, not free throws, fall Foul shots are a reward for an opponent’s mistake, but the Coupeville girls basketball team failed to take advantage of those opportunities in a pair of home losses last weekend.

The Wolves lost 56-39 to Archbishop Murphy Friday, Jan. 10, and 38-36 in a nonleague game to Mount Vernon Christian Saturday, Jan. 11.

Coupeville missed 12 free throws against the Wildcats and 16 against MVC. Murphy (3-2, 4-5) outscored Coupeville 18-6 in the third quarter to pull away.

Amanda Fabrizi led Coupeville with 10 points, Makana Stone had eight, Monica Vidoni six, Maddi Strasburg five, Bree Messner five, Julia Myers four and Hailey Hammer one.

Mount Vernon Christian brought a glossy 10-1 record into Saturday’s game, and the Wolves missed the chance for the upset.

They were also missing players. One sat out with an injury, another was hurt in the third quarter and three fouled out.

Fifty fouls were called in the game.

The Wolves sank only 1 of 10 free throws in the fourth period while MVC hit 6 of 12.

Cheer squad begins season The Oak Harbor High School cheer team opened its competitive season Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Harbor Cheerfest in Gig Harbor.

First-year coach Crista Carlson said her team received excellent scores in jumps and crowd involvement.

The Wildcats go to Skyline High School for the Winter Cheer Classic Saturday, Jan. 18.

NJROTC off to impressive start The defending regional champion Oak Harbor High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps drill and rifle teams started the 2014 season with a strong showing at the opening divisional meet at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Saturday, Jan. 11 In the nine team competitions, the Wildcat battalion snared four firsts and three seconds.

Oak Harbor tacked on seven more firsts in the 18 individual competitions, including sweeping the top five spots in strength team ironman.

The next divisional meet, which includes 10 teams representing the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, is Saturday, Jan. 25, at Snohomish High School.

Oak Harbor artist leans on paintbrush to help get through darkest times in life

To rise from darkness, Mike O’Connell got a lift from his paintbrush.

There was a time in his life when he was so gripped by depression that he couldn’t leave his home in Auburn.

For two-and-a-half years, this went on, until treatment and therapy let light back into his life and eventually gave him back his passion for painting.

O’Connell, 65, who now lives in Oak Harbor, leans on that brush quite frequently.

He’s a creative sort, using a vast imagination to write poetry and self-publish two science-fiction novels.

But it’s his paintbrush that has had the most far-reaching impact and given him the most personal comfort.

O’Connell’s paintings are on public display in several places on Whidbey Island, including the Pacific Northwest Art School in Coupeville, Garry Oak Gallery on Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor, the nearby Terrace Wine Bar & Bistro and the Island Family Hearing Clinic on Midway Boulevard.

“Oh my gosh, if it wasn’t for his art, I’d be in fear of what would have happened to him,” said his sister Kathy Hawn of Coupeville. “It’s such a release to him. His thoughts used to take him to

dark places. He can release those in a different way into his canvas.”

After working for 25 years in the paint industry, finishing as an associate chemist, O’Connell began having trouble with severe headaches and ultimately fell into a deep depression that led to his withdrawal from ordinary life about 10 years ago.

He went through extensive treatment, and slowly got reacquainted with the world outside his Auburn home one baby step at a time. It was a difficult road that included a divorce, but he wound up back in Oak Harbor, where he had spent part of his youth, to start a new path.

“Getting back into painting helped,” O’Connell said.

“Sure there were a lot of bad times. But to get to where I am right now, I probably wouldn’t change anything.”

O’Connell likes to work with acrylics and specializes in text paintings. He has painted 11 intricately detailed orbs, including one on display at Garry Oak Gallery.

The orb there is in the form of a giant circle that contains thousands of words and symbols from different cultures around the world.

The words and symbols are references to anything from natural disasters, to rock bands, to significant dates, to insignificant license plate numbers from movies he Corps at the state park.

“Two Hands and a Shovel” is the title of the book, which is largely a collection of photos of the work.

The book may be found at Wind & Tide Bookshop in downtown Oak Harbor and also is being sold online on Amazon, which Hartt used to self-publish the book.

Art is O’Connell’s labor of love and favorite pastime. It’s helped him get through the most difficult times of his life.

It’s helping him with the recent loss of his mother, Wilma Louise O’Connell, who died on Dec. 14.

O’Connell spent the past two years as his mother’s primary caregiver after she had a stroke. He lived with her the past four and half years.

“It was pretty tough,” O’Connell said of her passing. “It made for a strange Christmas.”

Caring for his mother required most of O’Connell’s attention and he became somewhat isolated again at their home.

LEY TAFT is on display at Oak Harbor City Hall this month and February. A lifelong artist, Taft works primarily in colored pencil and pen and ink, with occasional excursions into watercolor.

She enjoys all subject matter but is especially fond of animals. She studied at The Greenville, S.C., Museum of Art with Julia Peters. One of her jobs was designing custom rugs for private homes and public spaces.

He’s going through an adjustment without her. He’s unaccustomed to the time he finds on his hands and the freedom to venture out.

He’s trying not to be reclusive.

“I haven’t figured out my daily routines,” he said.

“Before, I’d give mom breakfast, lunch, dinner, get her up and get her to bed. Now, it’s like ‘What do I do? I’ll go paint.’

“I’ve been painting up a storm.”

There’s an energy to O’Connell’s voice. He sounds

like a grateful man. He spoke of a nice visit with his two sons over the holidays. He has a sister nearby who cares deeply about him.

“I think I’m his biggest fan art wise,” she said. “It’s what he eats and breathes.”
