boys and girls club enrolling for 2013 fall basketball league The Federal Way Boys and Girls Club is currently enrolling for the 2013 Fall Basketball League. The deadline for early registration is Nov. 3. Teams are formed by local school and/or area. The divisions are divided into co-ed leagues. Leagues consist of kindergarten/1st grades, 2/3 grades, 4/5 grades and 6/7 grades. Hoops and courts are modified for specific grades. The season runs from Nov. 5-Dec. 21 and games are played at the Boys and Girls Club. The program costs $50 (plus a $36 Club membership fee). The Thomas Jefferson football team gave their fans an impressive homecoming gift Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The Raiders shut out the Mount Rainier Rams, 41-0, to remain right in the playoff mix in the South Puget Sound League North Division. The win over the Rams puts TJ in a tie for fourth place in the SPSL North with the Tahoma Bears. Both teams sit 4-2 in league play. Auburn Riverside leads at 6-0, followed by Kentwood (5-1) and Auburn (5-2). The top-four finishers in the SPSL North advance into the postseason. The Raiders scored six touchdowns against Mount Rainier and they all came from different players. Senior quarterback Niko DelaCruz led things off with a 26-yard run and Tyrell Williams added an 18-yard touchdown run to give TJ a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, DelaCruz connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Lonyay Jones and Phillip Cuadros to put the Raiders up 28-0. Zach Grayson and Shane Seaume added second-half touchdown runs to finalize the 41-0 win. Jefferson will travel to Kentridge Friday night to take on the 0-6 Chargers and will end the regular season with a trip to Maple Valley to play Tahoma. Seattle lost a legitimate sports icon Sunday when Don James died at his home in Kirkland. The former University of Washington football coach was 80 years old and had pancreatic cancer. “The Dawgfather,” as James was known, was Seattle sports during his 18-year career at the helm of the Husky program. During his tenure from 1975 through 1992, James established Washington as Don James not only the class of the Pac-10, but also a national power. The Huskies won 10 bowl games and had a 153-58-2 record during James’ 18 years. At the time, only Bear Bryant, Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden had won more. James is currently seventh on the all-time Division-I coaching victory list. James’ teams won four Rose Bowl titles (1978, 1982, 1991 and 1992), six conference championships and finished in the Top-20 in the national rankings 11 times. He had 109 players that were selected in the NFL Draft, including 10 in the first round. But the highlight of James’ coaching career came during the 1991 season when a loaded Washington team finished unbeaten and shared the National Championship with Miami. Clapp and Olufson were also part of the Decatur team that was awarded the SPSL 3A Golf Academic Team Championship. The Gators finished the season with a team grade-point average of 3.67. Other players include Nick Brainard, Nick Zellerhoff, Devin Martinez and Danny Klein. A pair of TJ boys also automatically qualified for the 4A state tournament after impressive finishes at the SPSL 4A Tournament Monday and Tuesday.
