trooper, Robert Roane of Freeland was northbound on the highway and approaching the intersection on his Suzuki GSXR 750 motorcycle when Roxanne Taylor, a Langley resident, turned her Mercury sedan in front of him. The collision sent Roane crashing into the car’s driver side and windshield. Taylor was unharmed and declined medical attention, said Mike Cotton, deputy fire chief for South Whidbey Fire/EMS. Cotton was one of the first people on the scene as he was heading to the fire protection district’s main station about a halfmile away. When he arrived, he saw the car perpendicular in the left turn lane, the motorcycle on its side and a few people standing around the downed bike. Roane was complaining of pain in his left leg and stomach but also inquiring about his motorcycle. Cotton took his attentiveness as a good sign. “I liked the fact that he was alert and conscious,” Cotton said. The man was transported by Whidbey General Hospital emergency medical technicians to a nearby field where he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Washington State Patrol spokesman Trooper Mark Francis said the injuries did not appear to be life threatening based upon the report filed by Trooper Dave Martin, who investigated the scene. Martin said he issued a citation to Taylor for failing to yield.

FIRE/EMS Neighbor snuffs burned bacon A vigilant neighbor on Maxwelton Road noticed smoke coming from a nearby beach house Tuesday. Luckily for the house’s owners and its renters, who had stepped out to take in the sunny weather and left bacon cooking on parchment paper in the oven, the neighbor is a retired firefighter, said Mike Cotton, a South Whidbey Fire/EMS deputy chief. The bacon was left in the oven too long and eventually caught fire, thoroughly smoking the house. “The fats in the food got hot enough in the oven that eventually it ignited,” Cotton said. “Unfortunately we lost the bacon.” The neighbor used his fire extinguisher to snuff out the flames. District firefighters used an electric fan to blow smoke out of the Maxwelton Beach home and turned off power to the oven as a precaution, Cotton said. No one was injured by the burned bacon or the smoke.

SOUTH END Life jacket, PFD collection goes on Elijah Spratt’s family remains firm on the trail of getting life jackets to put at public watering holes around Puget Sound. Since the death of 10-year-old Elijah, who drowned June 30 at a river park in Arlington, Jacqueline “JJ” Edwards has fervently collected personal flotation devices, or PFDs. Her aim is to collect and distribute them at parks, such as Twin Rivers Park in Arlington and Deer Lake in Clinton. She will be at the Whidbey Island Area Fair this week promoting water safety, collecting PFDs and handing out whistles that can be attached to them. Edwards, who is Spratt’s father’s longtime partner, is also collecting cash donations she said will go toward renting a booth at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe for more PFD collection and water safety promotion. To date, Edwards said she has collected more than 650 PFDs. An online fundraiser has drawn $595 in donations. Donations can be made online at www.gofundme. com/3u01ho For more information, email Edwards at jj edwards53@yahoo.com
