Babe Ruth team wins 1 of 4 The Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball team collected one win in four games at the Lynden Tournament Saturday and Sunday. Saturday Oak Harbor fell to the Seattle Rainiers 10-2 and Bellevue 6-3, and Sunday Oak Harbor defeated the Diamond Dogs 11-8 before losing to the Abbottsford Angels 6-0. Sloppy defense hurt Oak Harbor Saturday as it committed 13 errors in the two games, eight coming in the opening loss to the Rainiers. Seattle and Bellevue combined for no errors. Oak Harbor also failed to generate much offense against the Rainiers in the five-inning loss; Chris Levy recorded the only hit, a tworun single in the fourth. The Rainiers, who were also aided by 10 Oak Harbor walks, scored two runs in the first and fourth innings and three in the second and third to pull away. Oak Harbor out-hit Bellevue 8-7 but was once again haunted by errors as Bellevue scored four unearned runs. Oak Harbor scored in the top of the first when Austin Hauter singled home Trent Benson who had tripled. Bellevue scored two in the first and second innings and added another run in the third to go up 5-1 before Oak Harbor scored again. In the top of the sixth, Cory Roberts walked, moved up on a passed ball and scored on single by Levy. In the seventh, Paul Spence tripled and scored on Paul Southerland’s ground out. Spence finished the game 3-for-3 and Benson was 2-for-2. In the win over the Diamond Dogs, Oak

Harbor blew a five-run lead but scored three in the top of the seventh to secure the victory. The Dawgs jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead, then Oak Harbor pulled ahead 8-3 going into the bottom of the fifth. The Dawgs scored five in the fifth to tie it. Oak Harbor’s first run came in the second. Robert Herring reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and stole home. Oak Harbor erupted for five runs in the third. Doubles by Dominic Stevens and Levy and singles by Benson, Dylan Bailey, Herring and Southerland highlighted the inning. Oak Harbor padded its lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, Benson singled with two outs and Stevens doubled again, plating Benson. In the fifth, Levy doubled and scored on Herring’s single. The Diamond Dawgs scored five in the fifth to tie it but couldn’t hold Oak Harbor in the seventh. With one out, Stevens walked, stole second and scored on Hauter’s single. Bailey followed with a base hit, and Levy singled in the final two runs. For the game, Levy rapped three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two. Hauter, Benson, Bailey and Herring each had two hits. After pounding out 14 hits against the Diamond Dawgs, Oak Harbor was no-hit by Abbottsford. The game was close, 2-0, until the sixth when the Angels scored four runs. Oak Harbor goes to the Burlington 13s at 6 p.m. today.

Running club focuses on fitness The North Whidbey Park and Recreation District’s Whidbey Island Running Club expanded its focus to overall fitness. The club is geared for youngsters 3 to 15, but coaches will work with older athletes on an individual level if requested. By allowing 3-year-olds to take part, the club provides fitness opportunities for kids too young for other organized sports to work in a team setting. This is accomplished through relays, games, obstacle courses, stretching drills and little runs, according to coach Megan Hall. The switch in focus is popular, Hall said, and the club is expanding.

Hall said the change is “a way to motivate kids to move in a fun way while learning.” The club meets from 3:45-5 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the ball field next to John Vanderzicht Pool. The first two weeks are free. The next big event is a field day July 20 at the North Whidbey Middle School track. Signup is at 9:30 a.m. and the events begin at 10. The field day will including running events, field events and games. For more information about the club, contact Hall at 360-678-6637 or wirchall@gmail. com, or coach Curtis Vieke at 360-929-4967 or curtvieke@yahoo.com.
