Holy Cross tops hosts in overtime

Brentwood players. Holy Cross held Brentwood to just four points in OT and cruised to a 72-63 win. “Our size worked in our favour as the game went along because we just took over under the glass,” LeChasseur said. “Our overall size gives teams a lot of problems and we were able to pound the ball inside more as the game

went on. When we did that, it created more room on the outside for Taylor and our other guards to get some good looks on shots.” Aaron Madaisky led Holy Cross with 22 points in the final while Henry Maduabueke chipped in with 19. Defensive whiz Stanley Maduabueke, Henry’s twin brother, was named the tournament MVP.

Brandt Snedeker is one of my favourite golfers for a lot of reasons. He doesn’t mess around with lining up the shot from six different angles – a couple of good looks and he has pulled the trigger. Play with Snedeker and you’re done and gone in four hours. Press conferences! No burnishing the ego here – all you’re going to get is “I didn’t play well enough” or “I didn’t play well enough to win.” Never an excuse, always a smile and move on. Snedeker this year has a habit of finishing second to the greats. A week ago he finished second to Tiger, this week he finished second to an almost record-breaking Phil Mickelson in the Waste Management PGA stop in Phoenix. Mickelson had a chance to shoot a 59 on Thursday – missed by one. A chance the next day to break the two-day record score – just missed then on Sunday just missed on lowest four rounds on the tour. What he did not miss was the win. With Tiger winning now, maybe the older guys will have a say in The Masters – yes Phil and Tiger are the older guys. David Hearn, the only Canadian to make the cut, improved 19 positions on Sunday to finish 16th. If you have a chance take in this tournament – do it. It’s a party from Thursday to Sunday. On Sunday this year, 180,000 fans showed up to have some fun with the players. Just look at hole 16, where golfers are roundly booed if you miss the green on the par 3, and most love it. Congrats to Phil Jonas, who teaches out of Surrey’s Hazelmere, for shooting a 67 on the final day of the Euopean Senior Tour Q School to earn his playing card for 2013. It’s been a great year for Phil, who also was named the PGA Teacher of the Year in B.C. This is a good friend. Mark Forrest, the head pro at Belmont in Langley, was also attempting to get one of the six full-time playing cards – he didn’t make it but stayed to caddy for Jonas. This name may mean very little to you but if Mike Carroll wasn’t around when we were attempting to get the Air Canada Championship in Surrey, we might have not enjoyed those seven years of play. Mike has just been named the 110th president of Golf Canada (formely the Royal Canadian Golf Assocation) an honour that will become official on Feb. 9th at their annual meeting. Mike has stayed involved all these years in the game, voluteering his services where needed and now he gets the top volunteer golf job in the country with a chance to make changes to grow the game. And a final thanks to Marlyn Graziano, the former publisher of the Now, who has moved on to an executive position with Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Many thanks for all your help over the years and continued good luck. You can reach me at preimer@canwest.com
