nights too and once we got one goal, things seemed to open up a bit more.” Toews’ goal provided a much needed boost to the tired Surrey lineup and after weathering a storm early in the extra session that included a shot off the goalpost, the Eagles put the game away with Klimek’s marker. “We had a real short bench but those kinds of things happen over the course of a season,” said Eagles captain Brett Mulcahy. “Other teams go through it too and this weekend it was our turn. Be battled through some adversity and the kind of game today helps build our character. When we can beat teams with so many guys out, it builds a lot of confidence. Half the game is mental so a win like this really goes a long way.” Surrey opened the weekend on the road in Chilliwack where they rallied from second period deficits of 3-1 and 4-2 to score four unanswered goals and knock the Chiefs out of first place. Mulcahy led the way with two goals while solo markers came from Nicolas Pierog, Drew Best, Michael Stenerson and Kevan Kilistoff. The Eagles were back in their nest Saturday where goalie Michael Santaguida stopped 30 Langley shots to backstop his team to a 3-1 win over the Rivermen. Pierog and Kilistoff each had a goals and one assist while Trevor Cameron scored once. The Eagles are in Prince George Thursday before returning home to face Langley Saturday at 7 p.m. Eagles notes: In the latest Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) rankings, Surrey is slotted at 17th in Canada... Eagles forward and North Delta native Demico Hannoun has committed to attend Michigan Technological University, beginning in the 2014-15 season.

Oak Bay 75-55. White Rock then toppled defending provincial champion Terry Fox 74-66 in Friday’s semifinal round. That set up a rematch with Langley’s scrappy Gators and Shury said the second game in three weekends between the two was a lot like the first. “It was the same kind of game as the Legal Beagle final,” he said. “We fell behind early in both of the games except the first time around, we got back into it in the second quarter. This time we were down by 10 at halftime and I knew the guys were pretty exhausted both mentally and physically after all of the games we’ve played in the last three weeks. So I told the guys we didn’t need the 10 points rights away; five points in each of the last two quarters and we would be right with them at the end. Instead, the guys came out hard and erased the 10-point lead in three minutes.” Swingman Vartan Tanielian led the Warriors past Walnut Grove with 24 points and was named the defender of the game. Guard Tyus Allen scored 16 points in the final and earned his third MVP award in as many weeks. Peter Spangehl collected 17 points and was selected to the first all-star team. Shury also singled out Sam Ykema for his contributions in the three games.

Golf report Even though it’s been a lot of years since my “reporting the weather” days on CBC TV and CKNW radio I have not lost my interest, especially in terms of how weather relates to golf. On a personal level you hope the weather will be OK when you have a game, and when following the PGA Tour you are crossing your fingers that there won’t be a Monday finish, especially with a Sunday night deadline for this column. So far I am only running 50 per cent. Four tournaments, two Monday finishes. The latest was this past weekend when fog rolled in at Torrey Pines in San Diego on Saturday, shutting down the golf. When they stopped Tiger Woods was mopping up the field with a six-stroke lead with 11 holes to play on Monday. If he wins it will be his seventh win in this tournament. (And what a comeback after Abu Dhabi the week before where he missed the cut.) Canadians were snooping around the leaders during the week. Adam Hadwin was sitting near the top until Sunday rolled around and in his final round he was nine over par with three holes to play. I know the Abbotsford native is going to be unhappy but he didn’t really work for this tournament. Prior to getting in as a Monday qualifier he had holidayed in Mexico and spent time at home so by his own admission he had not brought his game up to speed. The Canadian with the best chance to pick up a big cheque is Brad Fritsch. He is sitting alone in fourth place and he has 11 to play on Monday morning. Graham DeLaet of Saskatchewan is in tenth. He’s a steady golfer and could move up when the sun comes up. This is going to be a long year for tour golf if these Monday finishes becomes the norm. Chip Shots Golf BC announced its Titleist Order of Merit winners for the 2012 season. On the men’s side are Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows (Junior Boys), Adam Svensson of Surrey (Men’s), Kevin Carrigan (Men’s Mid-Amateur) and Craig Doell (Men’s Master-40), both of Victoria, and Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver (Senior Men’s). On the women’s side, Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam is the Women’s winner with Naomi Ko (Junior Girls) and Alison Murdoch (Senior Women’s), both of Victoria, rounding out the list. Victoria cleaned up with four awards. See you next Tuesday. You can reach me at preimer@canwest.com

Another weekend, another tournament title for the White Rock Christian Academy Warriors senior boys basketball team. The Warriors collected their third championship trophy in as many weeks Saturday when they knocked off the Walnut Grove Gators 75-70 to win the Vancouver College Emerald Tournament. Ranked second in B.C. among class AAA teams, the Warriors beat the thirdranked Gators in double overtime to win Coquitlam’s Legal Beagle tourney on Jan. 12 and then earned Surrey bragging rights by downing the fifth-ranked Tamanawis Wildcats in the title game of the Surrey RCMP Classic on Jan. 19. “Over the last three weeks we’ve had by far the toughest schedule of any team in the province,” said Warriors coach Dale Shury. “In our last 15 games we’ve played seven different teams that have been in the rankings at different times this year. We lost the first game to (fourth-ranked) Kitsilano, but now we’ve won 14 in a row including three tournament finals in as many weeks.” In Vancouver last week, the Warriors opened the Emerald tourney by beating
