Team B.C. stuns Americans in international football contest

Team B.C. closed out the Football University International Games with a second straight dominating performance on offense, defeating the United States 38-18 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday. Starting quarterback Liam O’Brien from Ballenas rushed for three touchdowns to lead the way as B.C. stunned the United States a 38-18 scoreline. “It was huge,” said O’Brien in an online press release. “The first three possessions all started inside the 50, I think. Coming out there that fast and quieting them down, and taking the motivation out of them, was huge.” Team B.C. also got touchdowns from Mt. Douglas wide receiver Marcus Davis, on a 31-yard pass and catch, and running back teammate Mason Swift, on an eight-yard run. Vancouver College’s Liam Mahara kicked an 18-yard field goal to round out the scoring

for the Canadians. “From the start of the game we came out firing,” said Davis. “That just gave us all the momentum to carry us throughout the game.” With the win, Team B.C., coached by Tom Kudaba of Terry Fox, finished the tournament undefeated. “It’s probably the best experience of my life,” said Mission Roadrunners’ defensive back Kevin Wiens, who recorded an interception for the second straight game. “Going to Texas, playing two games, beating the Americans, I can’t describe how great it feels.” B.C. had plenty of momentum after a dominant offensive performance in Thursday’s 4914 victory over Europe, where Swift caught two TD passes. In that game, they scored on all five of their drives in the opening half of the contest and seven-of-12 drives overall in the game. Against the U.S., B.C. leapt

out to an early 21-0 lead, including scoring on their very first offensive play of the game when O’Brien connected with Davis for the 31-yard TD pass. The U.S. got on the board early in the second quarter, when a failed on-side kick attempt led to the home team marching down to B.C.’s oneyard line before punching it in. Team B.C. answered on their next drive when Swift capped an 88-yard drive with a touchdown run. A field goal gave B.C. a 31-7 lead at half-time. The Americans pulled within 21 points early in the third but B.C. replied quickly with O’Brien’s third touchdown of the night. The U.S. added a late major off a punt return. Team B.C.’s roster included Centennial wide receiver Nathan Lund, and from Terry Fox defensive linemen Brad Lyons and Kyle Sagmoen, offensive lineman Michael Beck and receiver Adrial Sellers.

Clan forward sets new double-double mark Nothing like a little history to help set the table. Simon Fraser University’s Nayo RaincockEkunwe established a new Great Northwest Athletic Conference career record for doubledoubles, helping guide the women’s basketball team to a 75-51 victory over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. The Toronto native cashed in her eighth double-double of the season, and 49th of her SFU career, while breaking the old career mark held by former Seawolves player Rebecca Kielpinski. Raincock-Ekunwe scored 11 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead all players.

Port Coquitlam’s Kristina Collins topped all shooters with 15 points, including nine from outside the arc. The senior guard also posted a game-high nine assists and got the ball rolling with a three-pointer that began an 11-0 run to start the game. She would close out the first half with another trey to put the Clan ahead 43-16. Erin Chambers and Katie Lowen chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively for SFU. The win pushes SFU’s record to 11-1 on the year, including 4-0 in GNAC action. They play 20th-ranked Western Washington in Bellingham on Saturday.
