G.W.’s sr. girls crack top-10 T

he G.W. Graham senior girls basketball team cracked the top-10 AA rankings for the first time in the school’s history this week after a second-place finish at the 39th annual Britannia Bruins Invitational last weekend. The Grizzlies, now ranked ninth, kicked off the tournament with a 76-69 victory over Windsor secondary. The Grizzlies got off to a great start in the first half but let Windsor back in the game in the second and needed a last key run led by Jenika Bannerman to secure the win. Kaitlyn McDonald led scoring with 21 points, with Bannerman adding another 15. Friday’s game pitted the Grizzlies against formerly eighth-ranked St. Michaels from Victoria in a hard-fought defensive battle that saw Graham prevail 58-48 and earn a spot in the championship final. McDonald and Erin Steele led the Grizzlies’ offence with 18 points apiece, while Kassia Bednarzcyk was tough on the boards grabbing 13 rebounds. Saturday’s final saw Graham

take on hosts Britannia, the defending provincial champions and currently ranked fourth in the province. “They were lightning quick and an extremely talented team,” said GWG coach Sarah Mouritzen. “We weren’t intimated, though, and came out flying.” The Grizzlies led by eight points at the half, but their shooting went cold in the second and by the final buzzer the score was 61-49. “This was an opportunity for us to see where we stacked up against some of the best AA teams in the province, and we proved that they can play with any of them,” said coach Sarah Mouritzen of the tournament. Bannerman was named a second-team all-star, while McDonald earned first-team all-star honours and won the three-point competition, breaking the tournament record of 16 three-pointers in one minute. In league play, the Grizzlies are 4-1 after defeating Mission 76-43 Monday and Abbotsford 63-43 Tuesday.

hilliwack’s Fusion Athletics cheer squads posted solid results at last weekend’s All Things Cheer Championship competition at Heritage Park. Fusion’s junior squad led the way. Inspired by a pair of injured teammates, the cheerleaders claimed first prize and the Grand Champion title. The club’s youth squad nearly matched their older counterparts. They finished second place losing by just one point to the victors.

The club’s mini team performed a clean routine to finish ninth. The seniors had a rough time but worked hard and left with heads up high and a ninth-place showing. The Fr3nzy team battled through injuries to claim seventh place. Those injuries also forced Fusion’s F4 squad to perform in a non-compete category, where they entertained but didn’t vie for a medal.

hilliwack Chiefs defenceman Cooper Rush is one of eight British Columbia Hockey League skaters in the NHL Central Scouting Services midterm rankings. Ru s h w a s ra n k e d 1 3 2 among North American skaters by the CSS. The six-foot-seven defenceman boasts a cannon of a slapshot and has posted three goals, three assists and 48 penalty minutes in 34 games for the Chiefs so far this year. Adam Tambellini, who was traded last week by the Vernon Vipers to the Surrey Eagles, is the highest ranked BCHL skater, at the No. 62 spot.

Thanks Bruce, I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill
