James Joseph David

Roderick Francis Bourke It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Roderick Francis Bourke; a much loved father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, husband, brother and uncle to a wonderful bunch of family and friends in Canada, New Zealand, and around the globe. He passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on December 8, 2012 at the Waverly Seniors Village in Chilliwack, British Columbia. He is survived by his second wife Ruth McKitrick, daughter Maureen Halsall (John), grandchildren Roderick Halsall (Lisa), Noeline Borg (Wiley) and great grandchildren Alexis, Ethan and Charlotte as well as brother Ian Bourke and sister Noeline Eglinton. He is also survived by step-sons Greg and Roy McKitrick, and their respective families. Rod was predeceased by his son David, first wife Marjorie, and brothers Tony and Denny. Rod was born in the small town of Pahiatua, New Zealand. He spent his childhood on the family farm before enlisting in the army at the age of 19, later transferring to the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He completed his pilots training in Canada in the Air Commonwealth Training Program, earning his wings in 1942. He joined the RNZAF #488 Mosquito Night Fighter Squadron, flying numerous patrols and sorties in Europe through the end of the war. He returned to New Zealand via Canada where he married his sweetheart, Majorie Smith. They lived in Pahiatua for two years before settling in Canada. There Rod found work in the lumber industry, progressing through a number of lumber grading and inspecting roles culminating in his job as supervisor with the Cariboo Lumber Manufactures Association in Williams Lake, BC. Rod and Marjorie spent many happy years there, where Rod was a lifetime member of both the Royal Canadian Legion and the Williams Lake Golf and Country Club. On his retirement in 1985, they moved to Chilliwack to be closer to their daughter Maureen and her family. After Marjorie’s death in 1990, Rod lived on his own until 1995 at which time he met Ruth through square dancing. They married May 5, 1995 and had a great life together, enjoying many trips and helping local senior citizens. He was a kind, generous and loving man and did a great Haka. In April 2012, Rod suffered a fall, which resulted in a broken hip. Upon his release from hospital, he moved into Waverly Seniors Village where he spent the remainder of his days. The staff made Rod welcome, and provided outstanding care and support. At Rod’s request there will be no service, however the family will host a memorial tea at The Seniors Recreation Centre at 9400 College St, Chilliwack BC between 2 and 4 pm on Friday December 28 (across from Henderson’s Funeral Home).

The death occurred on November 24, 2012 following a 2 year battle with Colon Cancer, of James Joseph David of Chilliwack. James was born in Georgetown, PEI to Clarence (Clarey) and Janie David on February 4, 1938. He left home at a young age and lived in various places, working in the Sheet Metal industry and eventually after moving to BC in 1975, beginning his own company which he ran for over 20 years. Left to mourn his death are his wife of 44 years, Geraldine (nee MacPherson), children Golda David of Nunavut (children Cairo and Brogan); Natasha Lundgren (Richard) of Hope, BC, Jaban David (April) of Prince George, BC; Tekoa David (son Cole) of Chilliwack, BC, Kea David-Moore (Joe) (their daughters Michelle, Faith, Shondra, Keneisha, Aurora) of Chilliwack, BC. Also left to mourn are James’ siblings: Brothers Louis (Patricia), Chester, sisters: Margaret Lavie, Gladys –Ann (Frankie) McGillvary, Ella David, Laverne (Dan) Crowtz, Reatha Walsh and Janie DavidDixon (Ross) all of the Maritimes, several cousins, nephews and nieces and their families. Also his brother-in-law Kim MacPherson (Fern) of Chilliwack, BC and many good friends in the Christian Congregations on PEI, Ontario and BC, too numerous to mention. Predeceased by his parents, sister-in-law Anne and nephew Kenny. James’ strong faith in the hope of the resurrection to a Paradise earth sustained him until the end and is the hope we have of seeing him again, without pain and suffering (John 5:28, 29; Psalms 37: 10,11, 29) A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 29 at 2pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 46956 Yale Road, Chilliwack BC.
