ent the proposal for the multi-service hub to the federal standing committee on citizenship and immigration. “That proposal – multi-service hub – was proposed as one stop-shopping for new immigrants and refugees to guide them in procuring services from the other two orders of government,” Dhaliwal wrote in an email to the NOW. “The Welcome House centre sounds something similar, but I have not seen any details.” The committee never responded to the offer, according to Dhaliwal. “The committee appeared to have interest in the proposal, but nothing ever became of it,” Dhaliwal wrote. “We never heard a word back from the committee. An opportunity to help new Canadians in transitioning to their new home was lost.” The spot at Edmonds Street and Canada Way was picked because of the high concentration of recent immigrants in that area, he added. “The city chose that location for its prox-

Instead, it stands vacant while over the border in Vancouver, the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. is building Welcome House, a large service hub for new arrivals. In 2006, the City of Burnaby sent a delegation to Ottawa, offering to contribute 0.85 acres of land – which was valued at $2.4 million in 2005 – for an immigration hub in the city, according to a city staff report. In turn, the city asked that the federal government contribute $11.5 million for construction costs. “The City of Burnaby was very, very generous in offering prime land in the heart of what is the most diverse area of the entire country,” Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian said in a phone interview with the NOW. The Edmonds location would have been an ideal spot for such a project, he said. “If you draw a line from the Fraser River down to Deer Lake, you’ve got 100 languages spoken in a very, very small area of territory,” Julian said. “That’s a level of diversity we don’t see anywhere else in the country.” Constituents have said there aren’t enough resources, such as English language programs, for immigrants, according to Julian, whose Sixth Street office is not far from the proposed site. “There’s no doubt the need is there,” he said, adding it can be frustrating for people who have recently arrived in the area. “They want to be up and running and contributing as much as possible, and yet, the services aren’t necessarily there,” he said. But building such a facility in Burnaby would likely require a change of federal government, the New Democrat MP added. “We just need a government that is

Burnaby split into three ridings Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

When it comes to federal ridings, Burnaby will be split into three, despite widespread opposition, and the change could mean the New Democrats lose a seat to the Conservatives. B.C.’s electoral boundaries commission was tasked with re-drawing the riding maps to accommodate the province’s growing population and suggested splitting Burnaby into three ridings, one of which spans the Burrard Inlet and connects with a sizeable area on the North Shore to create Burnaby North-Seymour. Despite public opposition to the idea, the commission tabled its report Monday in the House of Commons, suggesting to proceed with the changes. “It’s pretty big news for Burnaby,” said Kennedy Stewart, New Democrat MP for Burnaby-Douglas. “I was really disappointed in the commission. The process is supposed to be where three neutral and learned commissioners sit down and listen to the public.” Burnaby now has two federal ridings: Burnaby-Douglas, which covers the northern half of Burnaby, and BurnabyNew Westminster, which includes the south and a portion of neighbouring New Westminster. The three new ridings for the city are Burnaby South, New Westminster-Burnaby and Burnaby North-Seymour. Stewart’s Burnaby-Douglas riding will be split in half, and the northern portion will combine with a piece of the North Shore to form Burnaby-North Seymour. Both Stewart and BurnabyNew Westminster MP Peter Julian spoke out against the idea, as did members of the public who attended the hearings held by the commission in the fall. The change is expected to give the Conservatives an advantage in the next election, since the portion of the North Shore that would be part of Burnaby North-Seymour tends to lean Tory. “In the last election, they won by two per cent,” Stewart said. “If (the NDP) fought the election under the new boundaries that they proposed, we would have lost by seven per cent. So it’s about a nine-percentage point swing.” Local resident Peter Cech wrote a letter to the commission, expressing his opposition to the proposed Burnaby North-Seymour riding. Because of development around Hastings and Brentwood Park, Cech feels the area’s population will grow, and the riding will have to be reverted to its previous configuration. “It’s just a huge waste of tax dollars, in my opinion,” he said. The commissioners had to aim for roughly 105,000 people in each of the province’s ridings, which left them with a bit of a jigsaw puzzle effect, where changes to one riding can affect the bal-

Now that the commission’s final report has been tabled, MPs have a chance to offer feedback, and the commissioners could make more final adjustments to the boundaries. “We may be asked to look at some of these (ridings) again and reconsider. And when that happens, we’ll do it,” Hall said. The final report will be out in summer, and the changes should be in place before the next federal election tentatively scheduled for 2015. Burnaby-Douglas NDP MP Kennedy Stewart met with Seton Villa residents on Thursday to discuss their concerns about possible changes to two community shuttle routes in their area. TransLink is considering changing and combining the two neighbourhood routes, to be serviced by one shuttle instead of two, extending service along Hastings Street east to Kensington Square. Weekday service along the new route would decrease from every 30 minutes to every hour. “It was a great meeting,” Stewart said afterwards, adding he is sending a letter to TransLink about the issue. The residents of the seniors’ highrise at 3755 McGill St. say the route changes would limit their access to doctors’ offices, pharmacies, optometrists and shops in the neighbourhood. They are asking that service along Hastings Street in the Heights neighbourhood be maintained. “It seemed pretty reasonable to me, what they were asking for, so I’ll be writing a letter to TransLink,” said Stewart, adding he also lives in the area. “It’s really nice to have all the seniors and young people mixing, and I think this bus route really cuts a big chunk out of the range of what they’ll be able to visit.” Stewart plans to take the problem of the proposed service cuts to Ottawa, he said. “I’ll also be raising this in Parliament,” he said. “It’s a bad pun, but you don’t really want to be throwing TransLink under the bus here, either, because we’ve had – really, the province and the federal government haven’t kicked in adequate money for transit systems here. So it really leaves TransLink holding the bag on what service reductions have to be put in place.” This points to a bigger problem than just the issue in the Heights, Stewart added. “This is the wrong local decision, I think, but we really have to look at the overall picture of funding transit in all major cities in Canada,” he said. The NDP has proposed a national transit strategy, headed by Trinity-Spadina MP Olivia Chow, he said, adding the Canadawide strategy would make funding decisions more consistent. Ross Campbell, a Seton Villa resident, said Stewart held a good meeting, adding he was pleased with Stewart’s approach to the issue. TransLink is compiling the responses to its public consultation held last month, and no decisions have been made as of yet, according to Marisa Espinosa, from TransLink.

So far, there hasn’t been any options.” The other levels of government are needed to get major projects such as the hub off the ground, Corrigan said. “We made a big pitch to try to get interest from the federal and provincial government, because the Edmonds area is such a multicultural area and it had a real influx of refugees, who we thought would be particularly well-served by a comprehensive hub of services. But we never got any uptake, even though we were offering up land, we never got any uptake from the federal or provincial government,” he said. “It can be pretty frustrating – you’re trying to get something going in your community and there just isn’t a level of cooperation from senior government to be able to achieve it. “I don’t think I’ve seen a government like this one for purely political decisions,” he added. “It’s almost always based on their ridings, and whether or not there’s an MP from their ridings, and whether or not they see there’s an advantage politically to do whatever they’re doing, as opposed to, where is the area that most needs support. That’s what frustrates me.” In 2008, the federal government informed Burnaby that immigrant settlement services fell under the provincial government’s jurisdiction, according to a Burnaby staff report. “The government advised that it had transferred responsibility for immigrant settlement services to the province and furthermore, did not have a capital funding program that could cover the costs of the hub facility construction,” the report stated. Settlement funding is handled through the immigrant integration branch of the B.C. Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills, accord-

The first phase of the Brentwood Town Centre development is one step closer to coming to public hearing. City of Burnaby staff received approval from council to work on preparing a development plan with Shape Properties for Phase I. The architects are currently working on the development plan, but there is nothing new to report at this point, according to Darren Kwiatkowski, executive vice-president of Shape Properties, which owns Brentwood Town Centre. The Brentwood Town Centre master conceptual plan divided the 11.5-hectare site at 4515 and 4567 Lougheed Hwy. into four quadrants for development, with the first phase including two residential towers that could range in height from 45 to 70 storeys at the corner of Willingdon Avenue and Lougheed Highway. Applying for the rezoning is a two-part process, Kwiatkowski told the

NOW last fall. The next step is a site-specific rezoning application for phase one, he said. This part of the process has very specific requirements, Kwiatkowski said, and it will likely be months before it is up for first reading. “I expect that the site specific zoning will likely take about six months,” he said. “There’s a lot of detail required.” The site-specific rezoning application will also go to public hearing after it comes before council. The four phases of the proposed development include 10 residential towers – with a structure capable of accommodating one more in the future – possibly ranging in height from 20 to 70 storeys, depending on the location, and two office towers ranging in height from 30 to 40 storeys. The design also includes a redeveloped commercial centre, a 50,000-square-foot food store, and a variety of public outdoor spaces. Well, I do agree with Wendy Chan about refugees that are in dire straits in their homeland should be allowed to immigrate if their lives are in danger or if they want to improve their lives. What really irks me are the refugees who come to Canada so they can collect Old Age Pensions – where is the justice in that? Warnings are wrong

Dear Editor:

Re: Police wrong to OK warnings, Editor’s Letter, Burnaby NOW, Jan. 25. As drivers with legitimate licenses are required to pass testing that ensures they know the rules of the road, I find it very irresponsible that local radio stations, “tweeters” or anyone else sends out locations of distracted driving, speed or impaired driving checks. Those who engage in such risky behaviours know they shouldn’t be doing so and a point or monetary penalty is well warranted to keep our roads as safe as possible for all. It is often an innocent person who is hurt, or dies, as a result of others driving irresponsibly. Media and individuals who send out information about distracted or other dangerous driving check loca-

tions should consider if they would warn someone about to rob a bank that there is a police presence in the area so they might get caught, someone about to break into homes that there is an active Block Watch and they might get caught. The consequences of distracted driving, driving without a seatbelt, at excessive speeds or while impaired put drivers, passengers and others at risk for not only property damage and possibly loss but also personal injury and possible loss of life. So, if you are with media and putting out warnings about police check locations, consider doing the more responsible thing, i.e. messages about safe driving practices and the consequences of unsafe driving. To the media folks, “tweeters” and others who are sending out warnings about police traffic safety check locations: please, when you hear of a traffic accident that has been attributed to speed, lack of a seat belt, distracted driving such as use of a handheld phone, an impaired driver, or a combination of the above, ask yourself “Did I do my part in preventing such an accident and the impact it is having on those involved?” If folks aren’t doing anything wrong, they don’t need any sort of heads up that they may be driving toward a location where police are holding folks such as them accountable if they are operating their motor vehicle in a way that puts them and others at risk. lead the province. The message, relayed over and over again, will no doubt shape how some people vote in May. The question is, how many? Are more people simply tired of the B.C. Liberals and don’t care that much about the NDP’s record in the 1990s or about issues like Dix’s memo? The NDP’s campaign theme is “change for the better” and the call for a change in government can be a powerful one when a party has been governing a long time. Or will the memo issue cause enough voters currently sitting on the fence, undecided about which party to support, to walk away from the NDP and vote for the B.C. Liberals, even without much enthusiasm?

It’s useful to note the B.C. Liberals tried to use the memo incident in attack ads in last year’s two byelections, and had absolutely zero success as they lost both seats. Dix is both the key strength but also potentially the fatal weakness of the NDP. While he is more highly-regarded by the public than Christy Clark, he is also less well known and thus vulnerable to his opponents defining his public image along their lines, and not his own. As is so often the case in B.C. politics, there’s a great irony here. Back during the 1996 election campaign, when Dix was Clark’s top aide, the NDP ran a brutally negative ad campaign aimed at B.C. Liberal leader Gordon Campbell. A series of television ads depicted Campbell’s

face tinged with grey, with a menacing and forbidding look. A voiceof-doom like narrator talked in dark terms about Campbell. The ads were relentless and, presumably, somewhat effective. The NDP won the election (albeit with fewer votes than the B.C. Liberals). Campbell and his party were furious and angry they had lost an election that looked easily within their grasp a few months before the vote. There’s still an outside chance history may repeat itself this time around. Of course, that may depend on whether people care more about what happened in the 1990s, and not about the events of the past 12 years.

Town hall meeting focused on Edmonds Neighbourhood issues include poverty, drugs and new developments Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

The growing pains of the Edmonds neighbourhood have led to uncertainty about the future of the Edmonds Business and Community Association. “It’s been sort of troubling times for it, the last couple of years, it just sort slid by the wayside with no interest,” said Joyce Rostron, former president of the association, adding memberships weren’t renewed and meetings weren’t held on a consistent basis. The annual general meeting was canceled last year, and there has not been a new board appointed since that time. Rostron, who has been a member since 2007, was president in 2010 and became a director after that. A lack of communication and leadership has led to the current inactive state of the association, she said. She has been discussing the issue with Burnaby’s parks, recreation and cultural services department, the mayor’s office, and Edmonds businesses and community organizations. Rostron held a discussion table recently about the fate of the association, and it was determined that the association should reach out to the broader community. “From there, we determined that there was going to be some sort of light at the end of the tunnel,” she said. The association and Edmonds Community School are cosponsoring a town hall meeting, Creating Community for Edmonds, to determine a future vision for the neighbourhood. “We just don’t have a clue what the vision is now of this area called Edmonds, because things are sort of polarized,” Rostron

don’t know.” Rostron said she hopes to see some fresh faces and perspectives at the meeting. “I think that the EBCA would definitely benefit from a resurgence of good leaders and open communication with a welldesigned vision as well,” she said, adding, “I do see potential and great possibilities for this area to thrive and become a sustainable community, and flourish.”

The parks department will have a display table with information on the new Edmonds pool and community centre, she said. City of Burnaby community planner Karin Hung will also make a presentation at the meeting. “I will be the community planner speaking at the event, providing a brief overview of the planning context in Burnaby, the adopted Edmonds town centre

plan, recent developments in the area, and projects that are currently in stream or will be happening in the near future,” Hung wrote in an email to the NOW. The 18th annual Realtors Care Blanket Drive collected enough donations to help more than 19,000 people in the Lower Mainland, according to a press release from the board, and has helped more than 205,000 people since 1994.

Ugly sweaters win votes

The votes are in, and Burnaby isn’t on the worst dressed list this year – at least when it comes to the Community Savings Credit Union’s ugly sweater contest. The winner of the local credit union’s second annual contest was Latika Singh, a loans interviewer in Surrey.

A Simon Fraser University studenttutoring program recently expanded its scope to help more students in the Lower Mainland with literacy skills. The Friends of Simon program connects university students with immigrant students at 200 elementary schools – and, new for this year, at 65 high schools – in Burnaby, Coquitlam and Surrey. The majority of students are from immigrant families who have recently settled in the Lower Mainland, said coordinator Angela Flumerfelt. “Immigrant students often come

both having to catch up on their literacy skills and their basic academic skills and, at the same time, have to learn English, so it’s a huge challenge for them,” she said. “Sometimes the schools aren’t able to address all of that within the school day.” More than 80 students from different departments at SFU – about half from the Faculty of Education – spend an average of twice a week with groups of two or three students. Cariboo Hill students in grades 8 and 9 signed up in the fall for the Friends of Simon: Rogers group, sponsored by the Rogers Youth Fund, to get help during after-school hours. Tutors help them with homework

Boys’ choir kicks off Marelle Reid staff reporter

Young men between the ages of 12 and 20 are invited to join the Chor Leoni MyVoice choir program as it enters its third year. The eleven-week program is free for any boys interested in learning to sing or expand their vocal abilities, and will culminate in an all-day choral celebration with the Chor Leoni Men’s Choir at Queen’s Avenue United Church in New Westminster in April. All levels of experience are welcome to sign up to sing together every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas College. The first practice was held yesterday, Jan. 29, but space is still open for more members to sign up. About 100 participants are expected to join the program in its Vancouver, Richmond and New Westminster branches, said Chor Leoni’s assistant conductor, Carrie Tennant. “It just keeps growing every year,” she said. “There’s just something about having the energy of all boys in the same room.” Whether participants have had experi-

ence with their school or community choirs or are totally new to choral singing, this is a chance to try it out, said Bruce Hoffman, director of communications for Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. “We’ve had a lot of singers go through MYVoice and then say that it was a lifechanging experience for them, and then they go on to join other choirs or their school choirs,” he said. “… so it’s really a wonderful opportunity for the guys.” The MYVoice choir sings a range of musical styles, from Broadway musicals to folk to world to classical to pop. The theme for the upcoming program is “heroes,” which, Hoffman noted, could refer to anyone from Superman to Jesus to someone’s mom, and a repertoire of songs will be developed around the theme for the final concert. The full-day show on April 20 will kick off with the Chor Leoni Men’s Choir performing a few numbers before the MyVoice group takes over, and then the finale will feature all the singers together. “It’s a great sound, and it’s very exciting,” said Hoffman. own decisions.

A representation agreement is a legal document that allows people to appoint someone to make health and personal care decisions if that person is not capable – due to illness, injury, or disability – and it can also cover routine ﬁnances and legal affairs. A representation agreement can be useful in a number of debilitating circumstances. “A stroke, a car accident, a bus accident, dementia, people can have a brain injury from a fall or a skiing accident – those kinds of situations,” Taylor says. “Even if you are already in a situation where you can’t make health-care decisions or manage your money, you can still make a representation agreement with people you have a trusting relationship with who know you.” The agreements stem from

the B.C. Representation Agreement Act, which came into law in 2000, legislation that was brought in thanks to efforts from citizens and community groups. Anyone 19 or older can create a representation agreement independently, without the help of a lawyer, and there are forms available on the Nidus website at www.nidus. ca. Most people appoint friends, family members or their partner or spouse to represents their care wishes. (More than one person can be appointed.) The chosen representative will make decisions on the individual’s behalf, should that person be in some kind of incapacitated state. he Edmonds Community Centre for 55+ is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special ball and a time capsule project in February. “It’s celebrating 40 years of fun and friendship at this centre, and it’s basically recognizing what this centre has been and where we are going,” said Laurie Woolley, the centre’s coordinator of recreation programs. The seniors’ centre will be moving a couple of blocks away, into the new multi-generational Edmonds community centre, which could open as early as spring. The Forever Edmonds Black and White Ball is on Friday, Feb. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a yearbook chronicling the history of the centre and its seniors’ society. The ball also includes a gourmet salmon dinner, dancing, live entertainment, presentations, prize draws and a performance by the Mellowdares, a local seniors’ choir group. Woolley said the dress code is semi-formal and the celebrations will be fun. “It’s going to be a party, it’s going to be a very social event and lots of reminiscing with the photos,” she said. There will also be plans for

the new community centre and its pool on display. People are welcome to bring small items to go in a time capsule that will be installed in the new community centre and opened 25 years later. The following day – Saturday, Feb. 16 – there is an art project event, spearheaded by local artist Roxsane Tiernan, who

will be using historical memorabilia from the Edmonds community to assemble a multi-media collage. The completed collage will then be rolled up and sealed in the time capsule. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and admission is free. There will be kids’ activities, refreshments and entertainment.

Dear Tom and Ray: For the past four to six weeks, when I start my Chevy Trailblazer (2004) first thing in the morning, the smell of gas and sometimes oil comes out of the airconditioning vents. Once the car has run for five minutes or so, the smell dissipates and does not come back for the rest of the day. We typically keep the car in the garage overnight. My husband does not think this is a big deal, since I have taken it to the mechanic twice and they didn’t find a problem. The first time I took it in, they replaced the thermostat in the coolant system. The second time, they conducted a fuel-pressure test and an evaporative smoke test. The results did not show any problems. I am still driving it with the gas smell in the morning. I drive my two young girls (five and two) around daily. Is my husband right that I should not worry? Or should I be concerned, take it to a different mechanic and ask them to do … what? Thank you. – Shannon RAY: I’d be concerned but not alarmed, Shannon. Let’s assume that what you’re smelling is gas, rather than oil. What do you need to be concerned about when you smell gas? TOM: Fire usually is at the top of my list. And to the great thrill of every hungry liability lawyer in the country, I’m going to suggest that the risk of a gasoline fire due to your particular problem, Shannon, is relatively low (not non-existent, but

low). Why? Because it’s been examined carefully by mechanics twice, and they’ve found no leak. RAY: It takes very little gasoline to make a lot of gasoline smell. And if your gasoline smell is dissipating after five minutes and not coming back for the rest of the day, it’s probably being caused by a very small amount of seepage. TOM: That said, breathing gasoline fumes is not good for the old brain cells – especially the brain cells of little kids. So, for that reason, I would ignore your husband, and push to get this fixed. RAY: When you park the car at night, the fuel system is still under tremendous pressure. My guess is that as the engine cools down, some small fitting or hose shrinks a little and allows a little bit of gasoline to seep out. TOM: And the next day, when you turn on the car, the smell of that gasoline wafts right into the cowl at the bottom of the windshield, and comes into the passenger compartment through your vents. Then, as the engine heats back up, the gasoline evaporates and the leak seals itself up, and everything is fine for the rest of the day. RAY: The best way to find this kind of small leak is with an old-fashioned emissions wand. Before everything was centralized in the car’s data port, we used to stick a wand in the tailpipe to test a car’s emissions system. TOM: So if you can find a mechanic who still has an emissions wand, he can probe around the engine compartment and use it to detect a very small amount of gasoline anywhere. RAY: What you want to do is leave the car with that mechanic overnight. Try to simulate the exact conditions under which it misbehaves. www.cartalk.com

Hoop men win first of the year Simon Fraser University chalked up its first men’s NCAA Division II basketball conference season win on Thursday. The Clan knocked off third-place Alaska Fairbanks 68-54 in Great Northwest conference action at home on Jan. 24. Ibrahim Appiah led the Clan with 16 points and seven rebounds. “All week, coach was emphasizing our energy,” said Appiah in a Clan press release. “He said, ‘we need to come off the bench and bring the energy.’ That’s been my mentality the whole week.” Elijah Matthews chipped in with 14 points, while Taylor Dunn added 11 points. With fewer than two weeks before the Western Lacrosse Association junior entry draft, the Burnaby Lakers senior A club made a coaching change. Third-year head coach Bob Johnston was replaced with assistant player/coach Rory McDade last week. “I think (Johnston) was ready to move upstairs. Twice we made the playoffs. I thought it was just time,” said Burnaby general manager Paul Rowbotham about the move. “We looked at it. Rory was ready to coach. It is more of a transition.” McDade, just 31, spent his entire WLA career with the Lakers, scoring 106 goals in 130 league and playoff games while garnering almost 300 total points. “He (Rory) is younger. The game is changing. I think of it as a change, and after three years, I think (Johnston) pushed them as far as he could push them.” Johnston has not yet responded to whether he would stay with the team in another capacity. “They (the Lakers) wanted to make a change,” Johnston said, adding he would have liked to have had the opportunity to coach one more season behind the Burnaby bench. McDade had a successful five-year career in the Western Hockey League.

The season is ticking down on the junior B Grandview Steelers. The Burnaby Winter Club-based Steelers chalked up their 17th win of the Pacific Junior Hockey League with a 6-2 win over the Ridge Meadows Flames at home on Sunday. The victory left the Steelers in last place in the Tom Shaw Conference, still two points behind the North Vancouver Wolf Pack, and with four games remaining in the regular-season schedule in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot.

North Vancouver, with seven games still left to play, currently enjoys a threegame cushion on the Steelers. Grandview lost an important 3-2 decision to the league-leading Richmond Sockeyes last Thursday. The Steelers surrendered two unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes of the game at the Richmond Arena despite outshooting their hosts 39-29. Second star Spencer Meyer gave Grandview a 2-0 first-period lead with a goal and an assist on Karl Schopf’s last

minute marker. On Sunday, Meyer was again the team’s first star, contributing a goal and a single helper in the win over Ridge Meadows. Prospect Quinn Lenihan also had a two-point outing, including an unassisted goal in the middle frame. Joshua Spence had two assists for the Steelers. Grandview hosts the Aldergrove Kodiaks at the winter club on Super Bowl Sunday. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. to accommodate the football game.

SFU middle distance women make times Simon Fraser University 800-metre runners met the standard and then some for the NCAA Division II national championships. Senior Helen Crofts beat her own Div.II-leading mark in the metric halfmile by two seconds to automatically qualify for the nationals indoor track and field championships with a time of 2:08.52. Crofts also helped post the top Div. II team time in the women’s distance medley relay with Chantel Desch, Michaela Kane and Lindsay Butterworth, finishing fifth overall at the University of Washington invitational indoor meet in Seattle on Jan. 26. Four other SFU runners posted excellent provisional qualifying results and are ranked in the top 15. Kane is ranked sixth following her time of 2:13.29. Sarah Sawatzky is in 12th place with a time of 2:14.15 and freshman Kansas Mackenzie is ranked 14th with a 2:14.96 clocking. First-year Kayla Lennea garnered a Great Northwest conference standard in the same 800m race with a time of 2:18.68. Desch also met the pro-

visional national standard in the 400m with a top conference time of 57.67. Hurdler Andrea Abrams posted the fourth best time in the conference in the 60m event with a 9.15 finish. SFU field athletes Mercedes Rhode and Charlotte Crombeen in long jump and Jade Richardson in the shot put also made conference standards in their events. On the men’s side, middle distance runners Cameron Proceviat, Adam Reid and James Young qualified at their respective distances. Keir Forster posted the second-fastest 3,000m time with a personal-best 8:32.49 at the meet. Luca Molinari made the Great Northwest standard in the weight throw. The men’s distance relay team of Forster, Reid, Young and Stuart Ellenwood have the second-best time in the conference to date. Ellenwood also qualified in the individual 400m in a time of 50.15. Der scored 12 points and had a team-high nine rebounds in the Broncos’ 67-58 win over Nevada in a Mountain West conference matchup on Saturday. Der, who has led Boise State in rebounds in three of the team’s last four games, is second on the team with 100 total boards.
