Diabetes fundraiser at SFU home game Cheer on the Simon Fraser University club hockey team and support a good cause as well. This Saturday, the Clan will take on the thirdplace Thompson Rivers University squad at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre. The night will also serve as a fundraiser in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The event will aim at raising awareness for Type 1 diabetes. A portion of the gate receipts will be donated to the foundation. Last week, SFU split a two-game road series with the University of Victoria, winning the opener 6-2 before surrendering the

second game 3-2 in overtime. Trent Murdoch and Kale Wild, with the eventual game-winning goal, both scored a pair of markers in identical three-point outings on Nov. 23. Captain Christopher Hoe and Trevor Milner chipped in with a goal and a single helper apiece. For Hoe, it was his team-leading 13th assist this season. Graeme Gordon made 19 saves to get the win. In last Saturday’s match, Murdoch and Wild tallied their fourth and fifth goals, respectively, this season. Even Kurylo took the loss despite 23 saves in the Clan cage.

Driver to race again Pro sports car racer Michael Valiante will be back in the driver’s seat for the Honda of America racing team for a second season. The Burnaby driver took two checkered flags and was second in another race in only six starts for HART in the Grand-Am Continental sports car championships this season. Valiante will also test a Daytona prototype sports car for the Daytona 24 hour-winning team Michael Shank Racing.

Burnaby’s Megan Ellis was an honourable mention for Portland State University following the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference women’s volleyball championships.The No. 1-seeded Portland State were upset in the semifinals by Northern Colorado in straight sets.

Princeton freshman goalie Kimberley Newell stopped a game-high 13 shots in the third period to backstop a 2-1 upset over No. 8-ranked Ohio State in NCAA Division I women’s hockey on Nov. 24. It was Newell’s fourth win this season for the Tigers. Larry Wright/burnaby now

On the undercard, Remy Lavoie of North Burnaby won a unanimous decision over Jerik Brown of Action Boxing. Ron Price and Rocky Milino Jr. both lost on split decision in their respective middleweight and Junior welterweight categories.

First pro goal

Carlo Finucci tallied his first-ever pro goal for the Evansville IceMen in East Coast Hockey League action. Finucci’s gameopening marker sparked the IceMen to a 4-2 win over Reading on Nov. 24. The former B.C. Hockey League scoring champion was recently picked up by Evansville in a trade with Reading.

Joey LaLeggia of Burnaby was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association defensive player of the week.
