Funding comes in for art gallery projects City gallery to receive 300K over three years to help fund special exhibitions Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

For a private collector, $300,000 might be enough for one special piece, such as an Emily Carr, but for the Burnaby Art Gallery, that amount can fund its special exhibitions project for three years. The City of Burnaby has agreed to provide the gallery with that amount, plus tax, in three annual increments from 2013 to 2015. The funding is the next step following a three-year special exhibitions pilot project that began in 2009, according to a report from the director of parks, recreation and cultural services, Dave Ellenwood. There was a one-year renewal of the project for 2012, as well. The program was assessed that year and a business case for the project was developed, the report stated. The benefits of the program include the ability to develop more complex curatorial projects, more outreach projects, to leverage grants from other funding sources and leverage loans from other institutions, increased partnerships with other museums, increased quality in art dona-

tions, an uptake in traveling exhibitions and an increase in artist and group exhibit publications, according to the report. “Over the past four years the Burnaby Art Gallery has contributed to the history of Canadian art through the publication of monographs by Takao Tanabe, Gordon Smith, Ann Kipling, Davida Kidd, Aganetha Dyck, Marianna Schmidt, Robert Young, Torrie Groening and Doug Biden,” Ellenwood added. “Group publications include: I-Dent, Our Changing Landscape and Inuit Dolls of the Kivaliiq.” The project has also connected with the Burnaby community, with school and public program participation increasing by 300 per cent since the pilot project began, according to the report. Community engagement has increased by 75 per cent, it added. And the project has attracted attention from investors and reviewers, with investment from outside sources increasing by 20 per cent and critical recognition of the Burnaby Art Gallery increasing by 50 per cent, the report stated. The renewal of funding for three years could allow the gallery to pursue a themed approach to its exhibits and programs, the report added. The $300,000 in funding for the project is set to come from the city’s gaming reserve fund.
