diminutive deer are less timid than the larger mule deer of the province’s interior regions. You may see them grazing city boulevards and backyards. Canada’s largest waterfowl, the Trumpeter Swan, arrives at the J.V. Cline Sanctuary in November and remains until March, to the delight of avid bird watchers from around the world. But they are not alone. In fact, hundreds of bird species are attracted to this section of the Somass Estuary, which was purchased by Ducks Unlimited as part of its campaign to establish waterfowl reserves along the entire length of the Baja-to-Alaska Pacific Flyway. Alberni Valley maps have several suggested routes marked for this park located on the far side of the Somass River.
