n Abbotsford man is lucky to be alive after he was struck while riding his bright yellow recumbent bicycle on South Parallel Road last Thursday. He’s hoping someone can help identify the driver of the car. Gino Marozzo, 57, is nurturing a cracked collarbone, bruises and scratches around his head this week, but what really disturbs him is whoever hit his low-riding velomobile left the scene. To make matters worse, he’s sure it is a vehicle he’s seen in the area many times during his regular bike r ides around Sumas Prairie. He says it was a late model, four-door Chrysler Sebring sedan in a light gold colour. It must have some damage on its front right side.

“It made a loud noise. There’s no possibility that he didn’t know he struck me,” said Marozzo on Friday. The incident happened at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday as Marozzo was riding east on South Parallel Road, about h a l f w a y b e t we e n S u m a s Wa y a n d Whatcom Road. The weather was clear and the road is fairly straight there. He was riding his bullet-shaped $10,000 Belgian-made WAW velomobile, an incumbent bicycle that’s enclosed in a light-weight, carbon fiber shell, that’s a two-tone sunny yellow and light grey. It is also equipped with bright lights front and rear. He could see a vehicle in the distance coming up behind him from the west in his rear-view mirrors, but as it got closer, “to my horror he didn’t see HIT, page A16

he best of Abbotsford’s business community were honoured at the 17th annual Business Excellence Awards at Tradex Wednesday. The gala celebration is an established tradition in Abbotsford’s business community, and the latest event was the most successful ever, said Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce executive director Allan Asaph. A total of 530 guests attended the gala to see 90 nominees vie for awards in 11 different categories. The crowd was entertained by the popular Business in Black dance troupe and later entranced by Shawn Farquhar – a two-time world champion of magic. “It was a record crowd,” said Asaph. “It was a magical evening. The decorations and trimmings made it a very special occasion.” Farquhar, who displayed his prowess as a master card magician, w owe d g u e s t s a t t h e f o r m a l evening, said Asaph. “He dazzled and surprised everybody in the place, I can tell you,” he said. Asaph said the entire business

community and members of the chamber benefit from the evening that showcases the best and brightest in local business. “We get to recognize businesses working hard to rise above the ordinary, and learn more about who those individuals and businesses are,” he said. “A n d t h e r e a r e a l w a y s surprises.” Each of the 90 nominees was interviewed by a panel of three judges who then make a final and difficult decision about the award winners. However, Asaph noted that individual nominees are recognized at the event as well, given the high calibre of their work and businesses. A s a p h s a i d t h e c h a m b e r’s organizing committee is already geared up and ready to work on next year’s event. “We’re already busy. Nominations are already open for next year’s awards,” he said.
