bbotsford city council has approved in principle to contribute $17.5 million toward a YMCA project despite some strong opposition from residents and several councillors on Monday night.

The city would contribute 10 per cent of the total project, a maximum

of $17.5 million, which is half the cost of building the facility.

All the operating costs would fall to the YMCA, which is expected to result in saving the city more than $47.5 million over a 40-year period. However, council also passed a motion that outlined a number of conditions that see YMCA, page A7

ission RCMP are asking for help from witnesses who saw a collision in which a blue 2007 Honda Accord is believed to have fatally struck a 65–year-old female pedestrian Sunday afternoon, and then left the scene.

Elinor Clark, 65, of Mission was airlifted from the collision site but pronounced dead at the Royal Columbian Hospital.

Police received a report Dec. 2 at about 4:30 p.m. that a woman had been hit by a car while walking with her husband on the north side in the 32300 block of 14th Avenue near Caribou Street.

“They were walking side by side, hand in hand, on the paved shoulder and they were going with the traffic.

She was on the left and he was on the right,” said Const.

Alyn Beerda, municipal traffic services supervisor at the Mission detachment.

According to two witnesses, the Honda and another vehicle were speeding as they headed west on 14th Avenue, he said. One of the vehicles then passed on the right and struck Clark.

Police have seized the suspect vehicle, a blue 2007 Honda Accord with black winter rims and no wheel covers. However, investigators have not yet identified the driver.

“We’re looking to place someone in the vehicle. We’re hoping we have somebody out there who had seen the vehicle prior [to the collision] and who can give us a description of the driver and

Parade lights up Friday

undle up in your winter gear before you head to downtown Mission this Friday night, as there may be a hint of snow for the community’s 29th annual Candlelight Parade.

The parade starts at 7:30 p.m. but onlookers are encouraged to arrive early to get a good viewing spot, and enjoy a bit of dinner beforehand.

Hosted by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Candlelight Parade is one of the largest nighttime parades in the province, and features about 80 floats this year.

Depending on the weather, the event draws up to 13,000 viewers and it’s become the start of the Christmas season for many in the community, said Allison Jack, the chamber’s tourism manager.

Youngsters should make sure they bring their letters for Santa, as Canada Post elves will be collecting missives

for the big guy before his return to the North Pole, just before his float appears at the end of the parade.

Among the stars featured (besides Santa Claus) will be Olympic swimming champion Brent Hayden – look for him on Mission’s parks and recreation float.

Remember to wave to the board members of the 2014 B.C. Winter Games, which Mission will be hosting in just over a year.

Other highlights will be the Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association – they’ll be the ones on bikes with shovels, chainsaws and lights – and the 521 Aurora Air Cadets marching band.

The Golden Ears Vintage Car Club will return, as will many local businesses and non-profit groups who take the time to participate in this feel-good

community spectacle.

Bring chairs or cushions if needed, and dress warmly.

Remember to bring a donation of non-perishable food items for the Mission Christmas Bureau. Volunteers will be collecting items up and down the parade route before the festivities begin. The parade route is from Horne Street to the Cedar Valley Connector along Highway 7 or First Avenue and will be closed to vehicles at 6 p.m. Friday. If you drive to the event, parking is also available on the south side of the tracks in the West Coast Express lot.

Kidnap, sex, gun charges pile up on Mission’s Pierce

A

Mission man is charged with a several offences in connection with the kidnapping, sexual assault and assault of a 17-year-old female.

Clayton Robert Pierce, 20, is charged with 18 offences including two counts of kidnapping, one count of sexual assault and an attempt to choke someone to overcome resistance, as well as numerous various types of assault and gun charges.

Insp. Richard Konarski, head of the Mission RCMP, said Pierce and his victim were in a relationship.

violence investigator did further work around an earlier assault charge.

“A Pandora’s box of stuff opened up,” said Konarski.

“Things that were not being said and other incidents all of a sudden came flooding out.”

The additional charges are the result of the concentrated attention Mission RCMP is paying to domestic violence cases, he said.

Once the scale of the assaults against the teenager were determined, additional officers were immediately assigned to the priority case, said Konarski.

According to court records online, Pierce was originally charged with assault for an

incident on Jan. 16, 2012. He was charged for an assault with a weapon and breach on March 1.

The greatest number of charges, including the sexual assault charge, kidnapping and gun charges, was linked to a Nov. 1 incident.

Pierce is in custody and is scheduled to appear for all the charges in Abbotsford provincial court on Dec. 10.

The RCMP is working with a Crown counsel who specializes in domestic assault files. Police are also working on a safety plan for the young woman, particularly upon the suspect’s release, said Konarski.

“We’ll continue to keep him on our radar,” he said.

Schafer back as board chair

T

he Abbotsford Board of Education has new but familiar faces at its helm. Elected chair for the coming year is trustee Cindy Schafer, who was board chair from 2008-11.

John Sutherland was elected vice-chair. The veteran trustee was the board chair last year.

Each will serve a one-year term.

Schafer recounted some highlights for the board and district this past year, including the new Abbotsford Senior Secondary School and Sweeney Neighbourhood Centre and

Abbotsford Community Library.

She acknowledged the teachers’ strike in 2011–2012 caused some concern and disruption in schools. She also pointed to regular meetings trustees have with the district youth council – known as YC34 – as a real highlight, and a useful time for board members.

The election was held at a special public meeting of the board on Dec. 4.

Committee assignments and school liaisons will be announced on Dec. 11.

“We’re just kicking the can further down the road,” Banman said.

Council called for the preparation of a business plan, as well as a report from YMCA on the community benefits of its programs and that the organization demonstrate it has secured the land for the project.

Any future legal contract or memorandum of understanding (MOU) also has to include clauses that ensure re a s o n a b l e c o m m u n i t y access to the facility, that the YMCA will reimburse the city’s investment if the centre closes and the city has no responsibility for any cost overruns or operational funding for the centre.

It was standing room only, as more than 150 people packed a conference room at the Clearbrook Library for the council meeting on the issue.

More than 30 people spoke, with two-thirds of them opposing the plan.

Most critics said they had no objections to the YMCA, but believed the city could not afford to take on the project given the state of the economy, the costs already being borne to subsidize the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre and Heat hockey team and the strain on the city’s already overburdened capital reserves.

Resident and former Abbotsford city manager Gary Guthrie disputed the city’s claim that no new taxes would result to pay for the YMCA project.

Guthrie argued the money would come from the capital reserve, which is already insufficient to meet all of the city’s needs.

City staff has repeatedly stressed the need to implement a capital levy on taxpayers to replenish the city’s capital reserve, he said.

“How can staff, on one hand, support the city gifting capital funds and, on the other, tell council the city doesn’t have enough money for capital projects and a tax increase is required to fund the shortfall?” asked Guthrie.

Other residents, including a fitness centre owner, said the YMCA would draw patrons away from the city’s own community recreation centres and private sector operations.

While others suggested the city would be better off granting funds or establishing partnerships with recreational groups already doing work in the community.

Many residents said they weren’t willing to support the YMCA project, as they were still paying to cover the costs associated with the AESC project.

“People on council come and go but the projects stay and guess who pays for them?” said Sukh Kahlon.

However, many supporters of the YMCA spoke about the benefits the non-profit organization would bring to the community, including meeting the demands of a growing population.

“This is an exceptional project that will provide us with quality of life for years to come,” said resident Jim Cox, noting the YMCA was pledging half the costs to build the facility.

“We’ll need to provide recreational facilities to meet [population growth],” said Cox. “If not with the YMCA, we’ll have to pay 100 per cent to put them in place.”

Others stressed the dire need for a pool in the community, noting competitive swimmers are often forced to go outside of the community to train.

How e v e r, s p e a k e r s e x p re s s e d re s e r v a t i o n s about the small size of the 25-metre pool being touted in the YMCA proposal.

Mark Taylor, general manager of Abbotsford parks, recreation and culture, said Abbotsford doesn’t have enough aquatic space, there are waiting lists for lessons and demand by swim clubs can’t be met.

A YMCA facility is the most cost-effective means to develop a new recreation facility and an athletic pool in Abbotsford, he said.

The project isn’t expected to impact ARC and MRC revenues beyond a twoyear period and programming offered at the YMCA wouldn’t overlap with city services already offered, said Taylor.

City financial staff told council a revised figure of $12 million for the project can been earmarked for 2015 from within the city’s capital reserve, leaving $5.5 million to be raised.

Salman Azam, director of finance, said the remaining funds may be gleaned from future further cuts or deferrals to other capital projects, but more likely from new increases in revenue or spending efficiencies.

Regardless, councillors Henry Braun, Simon Gibson and Moe Gill objected to the project, saying it would compete with existing public and private facilities.

They urged fiscal restraint and sustainable capital spending.

However, other councillors such as Bill MacGregor and Les Barkman stressed the importance of providing positive, recreational choices for Abbotsford youth.

TWO-PRONGED APPROACH

The APD used a two-pronged approach – educating young, impressionable, potential recruits, and making life difficult for gangsters.

“We went out into the street,” said MacDonald. “We got in front of 25,000 students, and we challenged them.

“We went face-to-face with teens, we went face-to-face with parents.”

In-your-face posters and videos explained that the gang lifestyle ends in death or prison. Police also put the pressure on gangsters to ship out. “ We said we’re going to make Abbotsford a horrible place to try to be a gangster,” said MacDonald.

“The local bars and restaurants became part of Barwatch – we figured if gangsters had nowhere to spend their money, they’d leave town.”

The APD set up a gang suppression unit that keeps a rotating top-25 list of the community’s most dangerous gangsters.

If they haven’t officially shipped out, the gangsters seem to have stopped killing. In 2011 the Abbotsford-Mission area recorded just one homicide – down from four in 2010 and 11 in 2009.

WINNIPEG TOPS LIST

For the entire decade of 2001 to 2011 only Regina, Winnipeg and Edmonton had a higher homicide rate.

For 2011 all that has changed. Now 24 communities have a higher homicide rate, with only Sherbrooke, Que., Bar-

rie, Ont., St. Catharines-Niagara, Ont., and Quebec City marginally safer. The Statistics Canada survey also shows that homicide rates increased in B.C.’s two largest urban areas in 2011, but fall far short of the Canadian homicide capitals of Winnipeg, Halifax and Edmonton.

The Vancouver region recorded 43 homicides in 2011 – up from 36 in 2010 – while the Victoria area had six homicides, up from five the previous year.

Those deaths put Vancouver and Victoria at No. 10 and 11 nationwide, respectively, but the murder rate is three times higher in Canada’s 2011 homicide capital, Winnipeg, and is more than twice as high in No. 2 Halifax and No. 3 Edmonton.

Kelowna also did well in the stats, with only two 2011 homicides, putting the Okanagan city at No. 19 out of 29 communities in the survey.

Giving giving gives meaning A

s I stepped into the shower this morning and turned on the water, a sudden feeling of warmth flooded over me.

It wasn’t the water. Not exactly.

It was that the water was there.

I had one of those sudden realizations of something that should have been obvious. It occurred to me how privileged I was to have some of the things that I take for granted. Like water, for instance.

Few people here need seriously worry about preserving every last drop. Nobody I know has to walk several miles to fetch a couple of buckets of water that will sustain them for perhaps a week.

Not a single woman I know – it’s not a man’s job – has to trudge the miles back home carrying a few gallons of water (each gallon weighs 10 pounds, not counting the container) to be able to provide their family with a few drops of liquid, of questionable quality, to boot.

Fresh, clean water literally falls from the sky for those of us lucky enough – despite our gall to constantly complain about it – to live in our verdant heaven.

Most of the year, anyway.

Actually, water does become a semi-precious commodity in our household most summers lately, as water tables have dropped and our well has been hard-pressed to meet our greedy needs.

It’s that that got me thinking about my privileged status.

Odd thoughts I knew that, with all the rain of the past few weeks, my well was certainly back in the safe zone, and I could leave the tap running just as long as I darned well pleased.

Even in the hottest summer – with my water situation at its most desperate – the worst that happened was the pump bottomed out. It sucked air, stop delivering water. It burned out, and had to be replaced. I was out of water for a day, and out of pocket a few hundred bucks for a new pump. Annoying. But not critical.

Not deadly. Not like in some parts of the world, where a dry well or a burned-out pump (if they have the luxury of owning one) could put the lives of an entire village in jeopardy.

It got me thinking past water.

I’m not rich – and yet, I’m among the fabled One Per Cent. and probably, so are you. On a global scale, average Canadian wage earners are among the world’s richest one per cent.

Donna and I realized years ago that most of our friends and family are global One-Percenters.

Of course, we weren’t called that before the Occupy Movement.

We were just “better off” than most people in the world and better off than some of our neighbours.

Instead of buying socks and ties and shiny baubles for those close to us, we began buying goats and chickens and access to water for people in parts of the world where such things are synonymous with dignity and life and hope.

Organizations like World Vision and Ten Thousand Villages and others have catalogues full of such wonderful gifts.

There is a need close to home, too. Consider helping out the Christmas Bureau on behalf of one of your friends, or help the food bank.

And a few bucks are always welcome in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles – you don’t need to give much, if you don’t have it.

For out-of-town friends, give to a Christmas hamper bureau or food bank near them. Let your friends know you gave their gift to someone who needed it more – needed it badly.

I’ll admit we started on this track with a bit of trepidation about how people would react.

But our gifts of gifts to those who needed them more were relished.

It turns out practically everyone likes doing something nice for someone else.

But a few people will. They’ll take a moment to remember the senseless deaths of 14 women who were murdered exactly 13 years ago at Montreal’s École Polytechnique.

It started out as an ordinary day of classes for Geneviève Bergeron, Nathalie Croteau, Anne-Marie Edward, Maryse Laganière, Anne-Marie Lemay, Michèle Richard, Annie Turcotte, Hélène Colgan, Barbara Daigneault, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Leclair, Sonia Pelletier, Annie St-Arneault and Barbara Klusznik Widajewicz.

Until a man with a gun walked into the room, ordered them and the other women in their class separated from the men, and opened fire on all the women.

In a sense, it remained an ordinary day, despite the horrific violence perpetrated on those women that day.

Because horrific violence is perpetrated against women every day – every ordinary day.

The Montreal Massacre has become a focal point for those who will stand still at candlelight vigils throughout the Lower Mainland and elsewhere.

The night will be filled with people holding candles and pondering their own memories of horrific violence – against themselves or against someone they love or against someone they once knew.

Violence against women continues to be a part of our social fabric. It continues to be a horrific problem despite the dramatic events of Dec. 6, 1989, and despite all those who will stand still with their candles in recognition of the awfulness of that day.

The problem continues, because too many people stand far too still all the rest of the year.

Dec. 6 has become known as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

There’s been lots of remembrance. It’s high time there was some action.

What is new with Abbotsford City Hall today?

Approval was made to give $17.5 million tax dollars for the YMCA to open a pool and recreation centre on the old hospital site and Albert Dyck Park will have a cable wake-boarding facility and pay parking.

Personally, I am amazed that our council feels it’s OK to pass these types of things without much public input, particularly because we are still whining about costs incurred and mistakes made in recent projects which did not allow much public input.

There may well be a lack in public recreation in the city but there is no lack of private facilities, which the city has licensed, who will be competing with the YMCA. I simply would like our mayor and council to be more open with their plans, have more respect for my tax dollars and be more sensitive to what is truly needed, prioritize expenses like infrastructure, say a new police building, and stop blowing my money on private business ventures which may or may not be a benefit to the community, but will not be a benefit to my municipal taxes.

This was the first public hearing, though they will suggest that we could have come to the budget discussions held in the library.

Almost no one in Abbotsford was aware that a cool chunk of change was about to be given to the YMCA. Nor was this held along the lines of a genuine public hearing, in that there was no adequate notice given.

The first announcement, (last Friday) of this meeting, said this would be our last chance to speak to the giving away of our money.

The public has yet to have a first, genuine opportunity to do that.

The details available to us, and to the council, are incredibly vague, but people asked enough questions to elicit some clarity.

The Y is in it for profit.

This is not all about an altruistic organization that will swoop into Abbotsford and cure all our social dysfunction for free.

The Y is asking to be tax exempt. The Y will be in direct competition with day care, housing, fitness clubs and other health-related providers, and who knows what else, since real data is missing.

Other non-profits have been begging for more money from the city, (and many worthy groups go hungry).

What they beg for is peanuts compared to this lavish, multi-million gift

After reading Walt’s letter (Front page ‘porn’ makes him burn, Times Nov. 29) regarding our paper supposedly turning to porn promotion, I had to write.

I am a working single mother and have no qualms or negativity towards the ladies playing lingerie football. I only wish I had the confidence to play myself!

As for these photos causing great harm to marriages, what a joke!

The only thing that causes harm to marriages, or any relationship for that matter, is poor judgement, dishonesty and poor choices.

If you, sir, cannot seem to control your own person and not be faithful, respectful and true to your “dear wife,” then might I suggest you turn your eyesight from the front page of any newspaper, and rather look inwards.

Front page porn makes him burn?

It’s not often that an article I come across motivates me to send a response but I found myself compelled to respond to Mr. Friesen’s Nov. 29 letter where he calls a front page picture in the Nov. 20 Abbotsford-Mission Times “pornographic.”

I have lived in Abbotsford for over 25 years and over that time, I have seen many front page headlines and pictures.

The picture which Mr. Friesen felt compelled to “burn,” and which took hours for him to erase from his mind, was nothing more than a photo of a Lingerie Football player in her uniform. She wasn’t posing, she was merely in the middle of a play and her photo was taken. If a mere glance at a photo of a lingerie football player in uniform required Mr. Friesen to use the tools he learned in his Valiant Man course so as not to succumb to impure thoughts, then I would suggest Mr. Friesen stay indoors during our spring and summer months as he may come across young women dressed in their summer clothes, which includes shorts, tank tops and even bikinis if at the beach.

I would like to suggest to Mr. Friesen that 99.9 per cent of the male population in Abbotsford wouldn’t jeopardize their marriages or moral codes by acting in undesirable ways by simply glancing at a photograph, a photograph of a Lingerie Football player in her uniform.

A tiny tree strung with a dozen lights twinkles across the empty trailer pads and curving streets that once made up the Garden Village retirement park on McCallum Road in Abbotsford.

It’s unclear if the tree will last long enough to see Christmas.

Sonja Ross is one of four seniors remaining at Garden Village, which was once home to 101 people but is now a few weeks away from closure.

The 84-year-old woman says she plans to “stay until they force me out,” but admits her daughter has been looking for an apartment for her. Garden Village officially closes Jan. 15.

“I don’t want to be bullied into moving,” she says.

It’s the second time Ross has been forced to move from a mobile home village.

Fraser Valley trailer parks have been under siege in recent years as parks that were once on the city outskirts have been absorbed into urban areas and targeted for redevelopment.

Garden Village is closing because its water system is 50 years old and replacing the pipes costs too much, says park manager Paul Hague, who is related to the property’s owner, prominent Abbotsford developer Karen Matty.

Hague admits the land could someday be redeveloped but emphasizes no permit applications have been made to city hall.

Under provincial law, park owners must give tenants 12 months written notice plus 12 months free rent before evicting them.

Garden Village has been taking a less confrontational approach. Hague says he went door-to-door 18 months ago to tell residents the park was closing. Since then he’s been working with them individually to find new homes. Many received two years free rent, plus $4,000 in moving expenses.

Lynn Cramp has lived at Garden Village just shy of 20 years and planned to stay until she died.

“This was my last stop,” she says, taking a break from packing. She hopes to transport her home to Barriere before Christmas and calls herself “lucky” to be able to do so.

Cramp is upset that some of the recent improvements to her home will be destroyed by the move.

She’s filled a trailer with perennials and rose bushes to take with her.

The shrubs she can’t take are rotting in a soggy pile beside the remains of her neighbour’s garden.

Manufactured Home Park Owners Alliance executive director Al Kemp says he believes Matty’s company has treated residents fairly.

“I’ve never heard of a park that’s gone this far [to make the situation fair],” he says.

“They haven’t given out legal notices, which speaks very highly of the way they’ve managed this. People are leaving voluntarily because they made it economically practical for them to find a new place to live.”

Kemp says there are about 800 parks in B.C. One of the most common reasons for closure is redevelopment.

Start early, be fair & help your kids hit their mark A

s parents of four young kids, we often wished that the maternity ward sent them home with an owner’s manual . . . and maybe a volume control knob.

We were overwhelmed with the responsibility of shaping four new lives and lived in fear that we could create four little monsters that we couldn’t handle as toddlers, let alone as teens.

Since we only have our kids in our homes for 20 years, how do we effectively launch them for their 80-ish years on this earth? Here are my top parenting tips that I have picked up over the past 25 years: ■ Start early – work with your kids like they are wet cement – the most formative years are the early ones.

■ Discipline your child – not beat or berate. Webster’s dictionary defines discipline as “training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character.”

If we do not train our kids (and all training involves aspects of discipline), the discipline will fall to employers, police officers and judges, who will be progressively harsher. I think

Faith that matters the harshest discipline of all would involve the child’s peers, where unacceptable behaviour leads to their rejection – and no parent would ever want to see their child go through a lifetime of this.

As parents, you love your kids more than anyone else in this world- it is far better that they receive training from you than any other.

■ Get to know your kids – remember that physical proximity does not equal personal knowledge and I am speaking to dads especially here. In a kid’s world, little things are big.

For Father’s Day, my son’s kindergarten teacher asked him to draw a picture of his favourite time with me. He promptly drew a picture of two smiling stick-men in a pickup truck. When he presented the coloured picture to me, I asked him what his favourite time with me

was. He answered “the time when we went in the truck to the lumber store.”

It was just a simple trip to buy some lumber, yet it had more impact than a walletbusting trip to Disneyland.

Dads, take them along wherever you go. There are divorced dads out there that would give their eye teeth to have that opportunity with their kids.

■ Lead by example – more is caught than taught. Be the parent that you want your kids to eventually be.

No double standards. My nine year old once called me a hypocrite – that sure set me straight. And I did not know he even knew the meaning of the word.

■ It’s OK to mess up – say sorry to your kids and to God, tell them every day that you love them and are proud of them and pray with them – they need to know what that looks like.

■ Lastly, raising kids is not that complex – the terrible twos are not that terrible, neither are the teens.

However, for rural properties on the city’s west side, waste fees will increase over a three year period from $180 to $220 a year to match urban solid waste pickup fees. The total utility fees for a typical Abbotsford home in 2013 will be $803, up from $787 in 2012.

Mission, Langley and Chilliwack’s 2012 utility fees were $1,087, $1,036, and $706, respectively.

The total annual taxes and fees for a typical Abbotsford residence in 2012 came to $4,012.

A one per cent property tax increase translates into $1,131,000 of city revenue. Council will give the budget bylaw readings on Dec. 10 and final approval on Dec. 17.

bodily harm in connection with the crash, which killed 36-year-old Paul Sunday and injured his wife Elisa Parry.

During sentencing submissions Monday, the court heard that Khatra, 62, had called a family member an hour before the incident to say he was going to die and would no longer be a burden.

Just after 2 p.m., Khatra’s GMC Sierra truck crossed the centre line of Highway 7 on a straight stretch of road. He continued driving westbound in the eastbound lane, towards oncoming traffic and Sunday’s Harrison Hot Springs-bound car.

Sunday braked and headed for the shoulder, but was unable to avoid the oncoming truck. Sunday died at the scene. Both his wife and Khatra were taken to hospital.

Crown counsel Carolyn Lawlor called Khatra’s crime “dangerous driving by deliberate conduct” and asked for jail time of two years less a day.

But defence lawyer William Jessop said Khatra has suffered a stroke since the accident and continues to show signs of early-onset dementia and severe depression.

He warned that jail could cause Khatra’s condition to continue to erode. Jessop suggested his client might be better served by living in the community and being forced by the court to get help for his cognitive impairment and mental illness.

He said Khatra had expressed deep remorse and had personally said that “if he goes to jail, he should stay there for a long time because the strictest sentence is not enough.”

After the crash he told his family that he wanted to die. Justice Neill Brown suggested prison might do some good for Khatra, who already lives in solitude and virtual selfimposed imprisonment in the basement of his son’s home. Brown was expected to render his decision Wednesday, after press deadline.

f you love a laugh, Mission’s communitybased Opening Nite Theatre will have it in spades with this season’s production, Puss in Boots, the Panto.

If you’re unfamiliar with panto, it’s a British tradition of raucous musical comedy that spread to the Commonwealth countries and is traditionally performed through Christmas and New Year’s.

A panto is typically adapted from a familiar story such as a fairy or folk tale, with broad creative licence, mixed boldly with song and dance, bad jokes, political digs, a love story, and sometimes bawdy allusions.

The characters are often over the top, and all usually ends well, sort of.

The panto’s multi-layered approach is as entertaining for adults as it is for children, for audiences aged two to 102.

Panto, adapted from the word pantomime, refers to imitation of personalities, and is used often to mischievously mock certain high-minded folks in the community.

MAC calls for art for Staber show

The Mission Arts Council has a call for art for its annual Peggy Staber Memorial Art Show, to be opened at the MAC gallery on Jan. 12.

The theme this year dogs, cats and other pets.

All media will be accepted for jurying, and all pieces must be for sale.

There is a $15 per piece entry fee, while students up to Grade 12 are exempt from the fee. The artwork togeth-

er with entry forms must be delivered to the MAC gallery on Jan. 5 between 10 a.m. and noon to be juried.

The works should have been completed within the past five years and not previously hung in the gallery.

Entries must be framed and ready to hang with wire, no larger than 1’ x 3’ for threedimensional pieces and no larger than 30” x 40” for flat pieces.

MAC keeps a 30 per cent commission on pieces sold during the exhibition.

All proceeds will go to the Peggy Staber Scholarship Fund.

Everyone is invited to the opening reception on Jan. 12, from 1 – 4 p.m. when four awards will be presented: one best of show, two honorable mentions and one student award.

Many ways to compost

A

bout now compost collections are growing faster than anything else in the garden.

All those spent annuals, fallen leaves and vegetable and fruit scraps are all ready to be recycled into rich plant food for future seasons.

How you choose to compost them can involve a rich assortment of choices – and it’s quite possible to have several methods going at once. In city gardens it’s important to have critterproof compost bins.

Rats and skunks are among urban wildlife that look on fresh compost material as a warm condo plus free lunch. Meanwhile, hungry raccoons damage compost arrangements.

Plastic bins where you add compostible stuff at the top and later remove finished compost from a door at the base are about as critter-proof as compost bins can be. These bins are sometimes available at low cost in municipal or city programs.

The wooden box type of bin generally has a lid and can be lined with wire mesh to stop small animals getting in. Often the front and

one side can be removed, making it easier to turn the compost. These can be home-made.

Three wooden boxes in a row means you can be putting compost in one while you are using finished compost from another and going through the turning stage to expose the third bin’s contents to oxygen.

Oxygen speeds up composting. Any vegetable garden can have a temporary chicken-wire surround for fallen leaves which decompose over the winter. It’s better if material inside is not too heavy because the four or five poles which support the wire must be plunged deeply into the soil.

Kitchen scraps can be dug into the vegetable garden.

One of the best methods is dumping one compost bucket at a time in one small part of a trench and covering that bit with soil immediately.

Other composting methods include: rotating bins, tumbling bins, spreading vegetables and weeds on paths within a vegetable patch, and the ‘heap’ method (best for rural dwellers).

The ‘heap’ method is simply layering compostibles in a heap in some secluded garden corner.

Various people tweak the

composting rules a little depending on whether they garden in urban small space or out-of town large space.

But the basic method is always the same: alternating layers of green waste with brown, dried garden debris.

Green waste includes veggie and fruit scraps, non-seeded weeds, coffee grounds/tea bags and grass clipping. Brown waste includes leaves, dried stems (including pea and bean vines) and straw.

Try to get straw that has few or no seeds. Eggshells contain calcium and can go in compost if they’ve been dried and crushed. A potato masher turns them into fragments easily. Uncrushed eggshells attract rats that like to eat the bit of egg inside.

Other things that get you into trouble with compost include: pet poop, cooked food, meat, bones, badly diseased leaves, roots of invasive plants and anything that’s been herbicided.

Corn cobs, nutshells, and pine cones, heavy waxy leaves and branches are very reluctant to break down – though branch breakdown is hastened if you chop branches into small pieces.

he Mission Roadrunners defeated Abby Senior 22-8 to claim the championship in junior varsity Double-A football Saturday at B.C. Place Stadium.

This is the Roadrunners’ second JV title in the last three years and the fourth consecutive year they’ve made it to the finals.

“The string of success our program has had in the last few years reflects the dedication and hard work of a lot of players and coaches,” said Mission head coach John Kapty. “Championship football programs aren’t built overnight.”

He knew he was in tough in the final after the Abby JV squad had defeated Mission earlier in the season.

“We had a difficult playoff road due to two early league losses. We had to play four consecutive conference winners in the playoffs.”

In the final, Mission opened the scoring with a two-point safety early in the game.

Abby responded by marching the length of the field, with quarterback Grayson Marquardt’s 40-yard scramble to the two-yard line. Chase Claypool followed with a two-yard touchdown plunge and the twopoint conversion.

Mission scored before the half but was unable to convert, ending the half tied at 8-8.

Early in the third quarter, Marquardt, went down with a leg injury, hampering the Abby offence in the second half.

Hadwin carded 68 — his fourth straight 68, to finish at 15-under. The top 26 finishers earned their 2013 card.

Hadwin finished two strokes back of the PGA Tour card cut and will play once again next season on the Web.com Tour.

“It is frustrating, there’s no doubt,” Hadwin said late Monday. “But what can you do?

Last month, after a dramatic climb during the Web.com tour championship, Hadwin came close on the tour money list to earning his PGA card.

“It’s just one of those things,” he said. “Besides the lacklustre start [when he shot 74 and 71], I played pretty good golf. I came up one shot short at the [Web.com] tour championship and two shots short here. I can’t say much more. I gave it all I could. It’s certainly not from lack of effort, that’s for sure.”
