POSTMASTER TAKES DUCKILNG

MANY FINE VOLUMES ON SHELVES IN ROOM AT PARKLAND SCHOOL Mrs. R L. Renwick, custodian of the l'arkland station of the l'ierce County District Library, reports that \'ff)' few of the resilents of this area have taken advantage of the fact that we now ha1c our own small public lilJrar} l'erhaps the re;lsou for this rnay be that many do not quite undei stand where the library is to be found aml \\'hat the l.Jasis for its ioundation is. It had its beginning :JI the last election ·when voters approYCcl a la1Y providing up to 2 mills to support this service. Since everyone who pays taxes is part owner in the lil.Jrary there should be many wore persons visiting it. \t the prc·sen t. time it is housed w a room in the "northwest corner of the basement of the Parkland public sd10ol and is open on Tuesday from l p.m; to 5 p.m. and on Thursday evening from 7' p.m. to 9 jJ.111. Many Books Available Children's books, and both fiction and non-fic'.tion books for 1dnlts are to be found on the shelves and books not available al this station may be requested and will be secured from the district library hcadc1L<arters at 502 South Eleventh street in Tacoma or from the City Library on Tacoma Avenue.

.Accumulation of new books 1s hased upon circulation of those now on hand which simply means that if the library is not used much more than it has been so far no new volumes will be purchased for this station The school board has very generously provided the room and had the shelves b,uilt for the lib1'ary, but it should be housed in a building provided for by the community. ·The population iu this area is· about 6,000 which means that \\'e should have a very nice building especially for the library. Possibilities Great Those who are fa111iliar with the fine number of books in S:umner which serves about 3,000 persons can readily im:1gine what possibilities the area surrounding Parkland has for developing -one of equal or greater worth if only the citizens of the comm unity will show their interest hy coming in Everyone who lives· in the county is pri1'ile.~-cd to use the books free of charge. · A look at the shelves proves that there is probably a book to please everyone. Three timely titles in the non-fiction i:;roup are ".J-l ome Vegetable Gardening," by Charles Nissley; ''300 Sllgar Sa,,c ing. I{ecipes," by lJarriet Hester, and "Ho11· to Landscape Your Grounds," by Loyal Johnson. ----()---

The two men clung to the skiff while Van, a senior lifesaver, quickly found a boat and rowed three or four lrnndred feet out to the craft and towed them in. Although both men arc good swimmers, they would have encountered difficulties if they had attempted to swim in for there was a strong tide and with a storm brewing the water was quite choppy. Approximately a hundred people gathered on the shore to watch the proceedings. The two men suffered chills and shock from their IS-minute immersion in the icy water but have now n~c:overed. For a number of years talk of a high scho.ol for the thickly populated district adjacent to the South End limits has been rife. However, all this talk has yet to bring any real action. There have been a few 111eetings and some preliminary discussions but any definite. steps toward actual construnion of such an educational plant have been few. in the past several months botb Parkland and Spanaway quickly put over organized fire protenion districts because the need was great and enough interested .citizens kept plugging away until the deed was fully accomplished. The same thing can be done to obtain a high school. Enough concentrated effort in the righrspots will produce a school in a hurry. However. this must be done with a whoiebearted desire for the citizens to have a high school regardless. of a particular location or wbo is going to be superintendent. Itis time for all of us to provide a high scliool .for the hm1drcds of young folks in this territory-and do it at once.

2ND DISTRICT Vigorous action is n.eeded to protect our farmers and other county residents from broken up and dusty roads and clogged drainage ditches. Other projects necessary to the health and well being of our citizens should be. started NOW, Excuses and endless delays prevent progress. This is the result of men serving too long in public office. As your County Commissioner I would start immediate action to p r o mo t e improved County 'roads. The Army Surplus Goods depots have thousands of gas shovels, ·graders, trucks and bulldozers. Labor is available. Funds are on hand. Let us have aggressive. and progressive action in County government. E. J. Cowan as your County Commissioner will give· aggressive and progressive action on vitally important problems of County government.
