The beauty and grandeur of Norway, with her lofty mountains , deep blue fjords and wood clad valleys, inspired such masters as Grieg , Bull, Sinding, Paulsen , Kjerulf, and many others,

to express themselves in song anti music . They contributed compositions of lasting beauty that

rightfully belong among the finest the world has produced .

\ From the days of the Vikings, to our present time, singing has been considered a national

heritage of the Norwegian people . In virtually every town and village in Norway there is a sing-

ing society , with male choruses having an important place in the musical life of the nation.

In America, as in Norway, the characteristic Norwegian love of singing and the ability to

\ \ ~

organize has manifested itself, which has forged a strong link in the bond between those of

Norwegian birth and ancestry with the homeland. For over sixty five years, Norwegian singing societies have existed on the west coast.

The Pacific Coast Norwegian Singe rs As soc iation was organized in Seattle, Washington, in 1902,

with the first Sangerfest being held in Everett , Washington, in 1903 . Since then Sangerfests have

been celebrated in the principal cities of the Pacific Coast.

The present Sangerfest is the 60th in the history of the Pacific Coast Norwegian Singers Association, and the third to be held here in Southern California.

The cultural, educational and recreational attractions of southern California are many. In this bicentennial year of the Golden State, I hope that you will each have time to visit many of them. Californians of Norwegian descent are among our

most respected citizens. The arts and culture of your homelana have contributed much to the heritage of the Golden State. Your fine country has always held the respect and admiration of all Californians. Norwegians certainly know the meaning of patriotism, liberty and the need of constant vigilance to preserve them. The author of our national anthem, Bjo'rnstjerne Bjornson, has written many songs which

have been learned by all Norwegian students and become a vital part of our common spiritual

heritage.

In one of them the author reminds us of the fact that singing together also brings us

nearer together.

is in itself a proof of the veracityof the author ' s words. Singing the Norwegian songs always

gives us a feeling of being home, sharing the words and music which are so deeply rooted in

Norwegian nature and mentality .
