Andata via dal proprio paese dopo la morte del marito, avvenuta dieci anni prima, Judith vive a Marsiglia con i suoi tre figli. Dopo aver rifiutato per anni di rivedere la propria famiglia, cede ai desideri dei figli e accetta un invito al matrimonio di un loro cugino. I quattro partono per trascorrere l’intera estate in Romania, alla riscoperta delle proprie origini e del passato. Il ritorno della donna riaccende però vecchi odii fra clan rivali. La spirale di violenza si mette in moto in modo inesorabile, a parlare sarà il sangue... Il film è stato presentato nella sezione “Proiezioni speciali” all’ultimo festival di Cannes. “Tutto quello che perdiamo o conquistiamo è spesso il risultato di una violenza, anche di una violenza subita. Sopportiamo cicatrici di ogni genere, che sono il risultato di quello che abbiamo accettato. Nel raccontare la storia di questa famiglia, volevo parlare dei segni lasciati dalla violenza, dalla sopraffazione, dall’autorità della legge e dall’umiliazione...” (F. Ardant)

Exiled from her country since her husband’s murder ten years earlier, Judith lives in Marseille with her three children. After having refused to see her family for years, Judith, in spite of her fears and secrets, allows herself to be influenced by her children’s wishes and accepts an invitation to their cousin’s wedding. They set off to spend a summer in the old country, discovering their roots and their past. But Judith’s return revives old hatreds between rival clans. The spiral of violence is inexorably set in motion, blood will tell... Cendres et Sang was presented as a Special Screening at the latest Cannes Film Festival. “Everything that we lose or gain is often the result of violence, violence that we are subjected to as well. We bear all kinds of scars, the results of what we have accepted. In telling this family’s story, I wanted to talk about the marks that can be left by violence, terrorizing others, the authority of the law, humiliation...” (F. Ardant)
