2 February 2017

I was delighted to welcome our new Staff at an orientation day last week before all Staff returned last Friday. Over the coming weeks, I shall introduce each of these new members to our community via this medium. In brief: Mr Tim McBride (Mathematics), Mr Tony Blackmore (HSIE), Ms Alex Castle (English/History), Mr Rob Clarke (PDHPE), Mr Dayne Grindley (P2), Mr Adam Hine (English/History), Mrs Jessica Oehlers (P5), Ms Jayda Yu (Chinese/ESL), Mr Rob Nicolls (Maintenance), Mr Craig Morrison (P6), Ms Kate Hooper (JK), Ms Natasha Ozerov (P1), Ms Yulia Voloshina (Science), Mrs Virginia Kemp (Creative Arts Aide). Amongst this group we have two Alumni: Ms Natasha Ozerov and Ms Yulia Voloshina; this is such a pleasing facet for us. I know you will make these new Staff very welcome. Additionally, we welcomed back to Pittwater House a number of Staff who have been on periods of leave: Mrs Fran White whose period of Long Service Leave took her to Antarctica, Mrs Sacha Webster, Mrs Anna Cameron, Mrs Elise Tamatea, Mrs Rebecca Fisher and Mrs Nicole Page who are all returning from Maternity Leave and the Rev has returned from his lengthy period of grave illness, eager to open your car doors in the South Creek Road carpark and to engage with the students and the community in the only way the Rev knows… It was so good to see the Staff together once more as we set the scene for the year ahead.

FACILITIES As I shared in my letter to you last week, the Campus has been a hive of activity throughout the Recess period. Final touches were occurring as late as last weekend. I am delighted with the progress made on many areas as we continue our refurbishment of the entire Campus; a process not unlike the painting of the Harbour Bridge… AND SO TO THE YEAR BEFORE US… It seems it was only yesterday that we were farewelling 2016 with our two marvellous Prize Giving ceremonies and we were certainly all in awe at our Guest of Honour, Deng Adut who just last week was a central figure at the naming of the 2017 Australian of the Year. He held us spellbound and I trust that all who were in the Hall on 9 December will remember his words as they begin a new year. Many of us were also saying, ‘Where has the year gone?’ Whilst such a question is rhetorical in nature, its essence, of accomplishments, can also be asked at the start of the year. And so a word of warning… the year 2017 will pass so quickly and therefore I challenge every member of our community to make the most of every opportunity, to be the best you can be and at year’s end, look back on 2017 as the year where milestones were not only reached but achievements can be clearly articulated and progress made on individual goals that you and your teachers are setting this week. In thinking of the year ahead, I feel we can but emulate the broad selection criteria of the oldest post-graduate scholarship in the world; the Rhodes Scholarship. The will of British mining magnate and South African politician Cecil Rhodes, established this scholarship in 1903 stating academic achievement, energy to use one’s talents to the fullest community service and devotion to duty and moral force of character and instincts to lead… this is, after all, what we are about at Pittwater House. Let this be the pathway and challenge for every student who daily comes through our gates. So savour this moment, this week, this new beginning. The experiences and challenges facing you need not to be feared; thus begin the year seeking growth with each student using the combined tools of our academic and wellbeing programs to make this a truly happy and successful year. My best wishes to you all and I very much look forward to engaging with you as students, parents and members of our wider Pittwater House family in the coming weeks. Dr Nancy Hillier, Principal

General News UPDATE SKOOLBAG NOTIFICATION PREFERENCES The Skoolbag app will continue to be the main point of communication between the School and parents in 2017. It is important to note at the commencement of the new school year, you will need to update your notifications for your child’s new year group. Please refer to the Skoolbag instructions paying particular attention to pages 5-8 for details on how to update your notifications: http://www.pittwaterhouse.com.au/media/20691/161014-skoolbag-instructionsbooklet.pdf. Mr James Walmsley, Deputy Principal PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AT PITTWATER HOUSE 2017 represents an exciting year of learning and professional engagement for teachers as well as students at Pittwater House. We hear a lot about the skills students will need for the world into which they will graduate and this applies to how teachers work as well. There is considerable research about the fact that the impact that a teacher has on students is increased when teachers work collaboratively towards common identified goals. Teachers have always worked together in Faculty and Stage groups and this will, of course, continue. However, this year we are extending beyond that to create K-12 Learning Groups who will work together with common goals. So this year we are rolling out Professional Learning Groups as we continue along our journey to becoming a Professional Learning Community, leveraging the considerable professional expertise that exists within our teaching community in order to maximise our impact on student learning. Junior School News FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLS On Monday we welcomed 47 new students from Year 1 to Year 6 to the Junior School. The new Kindergarten and ECC students adapted quickly and happily to their respective new School learning spaces. Our new students played games, met new classmates and teachers, discovered their House and familiarised themselves with their new School surroundings. The Kindergarten students were very eager to farewell their parents and let the next stage in their learning journey begin. Our new Bilbies and Possums were extremely courageous spending the whole day in the ECC. Welcome one and all, new and existing families to the ECC and Junior School for the 2017 academic year. We are extremely pleased to embrace you as part of this happy, thriving and positive school community. 2017 promises to hold opportunities that exceed our wildest imagination as children are encouraged to WONDER about all things great and small, known and unknown, real or imagined. The atmosphere in every room will be one of curiosity and inquiry as students discover their capacity as learners and the skills they will realise and develop. Our classroom awards this year will remain focused on Character Strengths, ranging from Kindness to Prudence, with each different grade featuring a particular theme, continuing to support the wonderful well-being and pastoral program which has been a crucial part of the students’ personal development at this School.

Once again students will be afforded the opportunity to be celebrating success from a House perspective, but not just in the sporting arena, as House activities will also include academic challenges, such as debating, public speaking, general knowledge quizzes, tables and spelling bees. Academic Achievement, in its own right, will of course continue to be encouraged and recognised in the same manner in the classroom and at assemblies. Assembly will take place on a Friday afternoon in period 5. Your child’s class teacher will let you know when they are presenting work in assembly. There are some exciting events taking place over the next couple of weeks, as outlined in my letter in The Principal’s Pack. We really have hit the ground running. This week there will be a letter on Skoolbag and Canvas from your child’s class teacher which outlines some important information and dates of events for this term which we would like to draw to your attention. The ECC to Year 2 Parent Information Evening will commence on The Deck (COLA) on Tuesday 7 February at 6pm finishing in the classrooms by 7:30pm. The Years 3-6 Parent Information Evening will take place on Wednesday 8 February commencing on The Deck (COLA) at 6pm and finishing in the classrooms by 7:30pm. The Years K-2 Swimming Carnival will take place on Thursday 16 February from 9am until approximately 12:30pm, and, on Monday 20 February, the Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival will take place in the School pool from 9am-3pm. During Weeks 1 and 2, the class teachers will begin carrying out preliminary standardised testing with the students in readiness to meet with you in your 1:1 meetings. These will be arranged to take place shortly. Teachers from Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2 will meet with parents in the mornings before school and afternoons after school during Week 4, and teachers from Years 3 to 6 will meet with parents on the evening of Thursday 23 February from 3:30 to 7:15pm. On Tuesday at assembly Dr Hillier presented badges to the Year 6 leadership team, who will no doubt take on this very special role with great pride and enthusiasm. I would like to congratulate the following students.

I would also draw your attention to adhering to the car parking arrangements in the morning at drop off and at collection time. For ease of traffic flow we ask you to follow the instructions outlined clearly in the Principal’s Pack. The speed limit of the car park is 5km per hour. If you need to escort your Year 1-6 child to the playground you must use the surrounding streets to park. Kindergarten and ECC parents must have their coloured permits on display to park in the designated car spaces. Patience will be a necessary character strength we will all need to exhibit when using the car park. Mrs Ruth Achurch, Head of Junior Schools HouseNews Issue 2017 / 1
