Historic Panther golf season ends at state tournament

Woodland Park’s Sam Levy finished 65th among 85 golfers at last week’s Class 4A state golf tournament.

FROM THE SIDELINES Danny Summers dannysummers@yourpeaknews.com

Less than 24 hours after Sam Levy played his final round of golf at the Class 4A state tournament, the Woodland Park High School senior was in the gymnasium at 6 a.m. working on his basketball game. “I’m turning the page right now,” Levy said. “My work ethic is to go to the next sport.” Levy, a guard on the school’s basketball team, was understandably down after the state golf championships. His two-day total of 175 (91-84, 31-over par) left him tied for 65th among 85 golfers at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale. “I just had a couple of really bad holes,” a subdued Levy said after finishing his Day 2 round on Sept. 27. “I had a couple of breakdowns in my mental game.” Anyone who knows Levy understands that it takes a lot to rattle the young man. He was as steady as they come this season, winning the Class 4A Metro league individual title (becoming the first Woodland Park golfer to ever win a league championship) and leading the Panthers to the team league championship (the first in school history). Levy also qualified for the state tournament for the second consecutive year, becoming the first-ever Panther to achieve that goal. So why did things not go the way Levy planned in his final two high school rounds in Carbondale? “You put a lot of pressure on yourself to do well at the state tournament,” he said. “The course is tough and there are a lot of good players up there.” Levy’s rocky round on the 26th included two 7s and two 8s on the par 72 6,800-yard course. “That’s not where I thought I would be,” he said. “It’s tough when you want to do so well at the next level and this happens.” Levy had a tough time handling River Valley Ranch on Day 2. He had another 8 and never got into a groove where he consistently fired pars and birdies. He was trying to manage a course that seemed to have the upper hand.

“It was pretty lengthy,” he said. “It was tough to naviBut Levy does not plan to end his high school athletic gate through. You had to hit good shots and if you didn’t career on the court. That should take him Anyone who has ever played golf, whether once a year into early May – at least. or five times a week, understands that it is a humbling “I want my senior year to be a great one,” Levy said. “I sport. You might score four pars in a row, follow that with a triple bogey, and then come back with a birdie. Golf is truly the great equalizer. Like life, there are many ups and downs. Levy is the kind of young man that won’t let the disappointment of the state tournament keep him down for too long. He will dedicate the next five months to not only making himself a better basketball player, but helping his team achieve success. The Panthers are 1-45 over their last two seasons under coach John Paul Geniesse, so there is a lot of room for growth. “Everyone knows how tough Coach Geniesse’s practices are,” Levy said with a smile. “They’re legendary.” The first official basketball practice is Nov 11. CC-V remains optimistic despite mounting losses Story and photos by Danny Summers dannysummers@yourpeaknews.com The homecoming football game may not have turned out the way Cripple Creek-Victor High School hoped it would, but Pioneers players and coaches still believe there are better times ahead for the program. “The only thing I think about is wins,” said CC-V senior running back Conner Brown. “We have to come out and have a winning streak. “Everything up to this point is kind of a failure to me if we don’t finish Everyone had a great time at Cripple strong.” Creek-Victor’s homecoming football A 56-0 game on Sept. 30.

It was CC-V’s first victory since 2010. “We’ve had a few ups and downs, but we’re starting to come together as a team a little more,” said CC-V senior Cutter Hutson. “As long as we stay focused on what we’re doing we have opportunities.” The Cripple Creek-Victor High School football team had its homecoming game with The Pioneers are playing at Genoa-Hugo on Sept. 30. 6-man football this season after petitioning the Colorado High we’ll have them for four years.” School Activities Association to drop down from 8-man. Despite just four wins in four years, the players on the Cripple Creek-Victor High School volleyball team remain upbeat and hopeful. “We’re really young and we have the potential to be good, but we just have to get in the gym more,” said sophomore middle blocker/setter Hope Davies. “Some people we have who are freshman now did not play in junior high, and some people who are seniors have never played in high school.” The Pioneers dropped to 1-5 this season after a straight-sets loss to Custer County on Sept. 30 (homecoming) and a straight sets loss to Custer County on Oct. 1. CC-V’s lone victory came again the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. And after a long drought, it was a welcome win. “We beat them in straight sets and that brought the confidence of the girls

She is working hard on developing the junior high program so that the players know the fundamentals of the game by the time they get to the high school. There are about 25 girls in the junior high program, but just eight on the combined varsity and junior varsity high school teams. “We’re trying to do a lot of basic skills and serving,” said Tracy Olnes, who is in charge of the junior high program and the assistant high school coach. The Pioneers’ high school roster consists of Davies, seniors Marisol Gonzalez and Angelica Atkins; junior Michaela Brown; sophomores Jordan Lanning and Gianna Warrino; and freshmen Angel Edwards and Cassie Castillo. Aspen Davies is out this season with an injury, but she is serving as the team manager.

Memorial Park renovation nears completion Story and photos by Pat Hill pathill@yourpeaknews.com

Keith Wilcox and Jane Mannon enjoy the view from a performance shelter at Memorial Park.

Vibrant with geological treasures, ancient Manitou Pink flagstone, the red dirt of Pikes Peak granite, Memorial Park harbors the story of Woodland Park. In the final phase of renovation, the park is almost ready to once again be a gathering place, offering recreational or peaceful interludes. On some days, it’ll be a rip-roaring place, on the 4th of July, for instance, or when concerts enhance the idea of community. For the past two summers, the park has been torn up due to a massive renovation project that preserves the past, retains the culture as a focal point of the community – while ushering in the future. In a nod to the 21st century, there will be plenty of parking places for a town whose population has doubled, tripled and then quadrupled since the park opened in the early 20th century. But always, there’s a certain magic in Memorial Park, as every spot in the park has a view of Pikes Peak. “Here’s your money shot,” said Keith Wilcox, construction professional with the public works department. Wilcox is referring to the ideal photograph taken from a shelter on the north side of the park. On a glorious fall day last week, with a slight nip

in the air, Wilcox and Jane Mannon, the city’s special projects director, and her assistant, Carol Lindholm, strolled through the park. While construction is constant, as if they’re all in a frenzy to finish by the target of early November, most of the amenities are more than a blueprint. There’s the basketball courts, nearly complete, and the children’s playground, with a tiny creek running through it. The water is pumped in from the pond. “The creek is intended for kids to walk in, dip their toes in,” Wilcox said. “It’s not a river but there’s a little sound of water as it flows over the rocks.” The city’s resolve to preserve the past is reflected throughout the park, in the rock wall, the old chimney in the center and the pond, which scored high on a survey when citizens said: “Keep the pond!” The pond will remain a place for contemplation but will also be stocked for fishing and, in the winter, ice skating will spice up the cold weather, for participants or observers. With the exception of the parking areas, the lighting will be soft, with light bollards throughout. With sidewalks around the perimeter, the park is handicappedaccessible. Chief among the amenities, however, is the Memorial Wall, which offers opportunities for residents to honor their loved ones with flagstone pavers.

The renovation of Memorial Park includes the preservation and use of the ancient Manitou Pink flagstone.

The landmark chimney has been restored and moved – but still remains in Memorial Park.

Keith Wilcox, with the city’s public works division, and Jane Mannon, special projects director, are taking a tour of the park.
