Spring Is In The Air!!! A Groundhog Said So! CirrusWorks, Inc. Partners with Boys & Girls Clubs of Danville, VA to Improve Internet Performance Danville, Virginia – CirrusWorks, Inc. has joined forces with the Boys and Girls Club of Danville, VA (“BGC”) in an initiative to improve the local chapter’s Internet performance which supports the Club’s mission to assist the community’s youth succeed in the digital age. “Every day at approximately 2pm the Internet performance would come to a slow painful pace when the students arrived to our facility” shared Faith Stamps, Director. “This was frustrating for students who utilize the Club’s computer lab to do everything from homework assignments and Standards of Learning preparedness to preparing college applications.” Simply adding more capacity was impossible due to budgetary restraints, so Faith reached her to her community for alternatives. Enter CirrusWorks, a Danville, VA technology company and Launch Place portfolio company. CirrusWorks’ flagship product, The Governor™, met her criteria because of its plug and play nature, which requires no configuration, making it easy to install and quick to take effect. The Governor™ operates without complex rules or policies, so it doesn’t need ongoing adjustments and expensive configuration. An important feature as the Club has limited IT resources to manage infrastructure. The adoption of CirrusWorks, Inc. emerging technology for bandwidth optimization enables the local Boys and Girls Club chapter to further develop their technology platforms and give more students access to various online programs - critical in providing adequate training to equip Club kids with the skills needed to compete in a 21st century economy. The results were immediate. “The Governor™ really improved Internet access for our students and administration,” said Faith. “We don’t have a huge circuit, but the Governor™ has definitely improved what we have.” “CirrusWorks is proud to partner with the local Boys and Girls Club chapter to improve their limited Internet capacity in support of their Club Kids technology initiatives and to assist the Club’s Administration in all the great work they do for the local community,” said David Giannini, Chief Executive Officer, CirrusWorks, Inc. “The Boys and Girls Club is an exceptional organization whose mission includes assistance in helping educate today’s youth about the digital world.” While the local chapter’s Internet performance has improved, Faith is still looking for funding to increase the current bandwidth to allow the Club to leverage an additional computer lab for the teenage members and to service several recent STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) grant awards. “These grant awards will facilitate upgrading our facility’s wireless infrastructure and provide wireless devices available for student use,” furthered Faith. “With these additional devices and access points, we are looking for funding to increase our bandwidth within our current budget confinements. We believe the partnership with CirrusWorks will allow the Club to continuously maximize our available bandwidth while managing budget restraints.” About Boys & Girls Clubs of America For more than 100 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (GreatFutures.org) has enabled young people most in need to achieve great futures as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Today, more than 4,100 Clubs serve nearly 4 million young people annually through Club membership and community outreach. Clubs are located in cities, towns, public housing and on Native lands throughout the country, and serve military families in BGCA-affiliated Youth Centers on U.S. military installations worldwide. They provide a safe place, caring adult mentors, fun, friendship, and high-impact youth development programs on a daily basis during critical non-school hours. Priority programs emphasize academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. In a Harris Survey of alumni, 54 percent said the Club saved their lives. National headquarters are located in Atlanta. Learn more at Facebook and Twitter. About CirrusWorks, Inc. CirrusWorks, Inc. is the leader in bandwidth optimization technologies. EMAIL continued from front article “Every day at approximately 2pm the Internet performance would come to a slow painful pace when the students arrived to our facility” shared Faith Stamps, Director. “This was frustrating for students who utilize the Club’s computer lab to do everything from homework assignments and Standards of Learning preparedness to preparing college applications.” Simply adding more capacity was impossible due to budgetary restraints, so Faith reached her to her community for alternatives.

Would That Get Me In? During Sunday Sermon, a preacher asked the Children’s Class a very important question... “If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?” I asked the children in my Sunday School class. “NO!” the children all answered. “If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?” Again, the answer was, “NO!” “Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my wife, would that get me into Heaven?” I asked them again.

Left, Faith Stamps, Boys & Girls Club and Right, Rod Lodman, CirrusWorks

Again, they all answered, “NO!” “Well,” I continued, “then how can I get into Heaven?” A five-year-old boy shouted out, “YOU GOTTA BE DEAD!”

The online Daily Caller headline was a bit of a shock: “Only VA Job Reserved Specifically For Vets: Janitor.” But that was only the tip of the iceberg. Additional investigative articles from the Daily Caller News Foundation [dailycaller. com] had even more disturbing facts. The site has a comprehensive interactive chart that shows the number of veterans versus non-veterans in 300 managerial positions. The number of veterans out of that 300: 50. Here are a few examples of executive positions: Albany, N.Y.: 19 nonveterans, 2 veterans Bedford, Mass.: 21 nonveterans, 8 veterans Glendale, Colo.: 5 nonveterans, 0 veterans Bronx, N.Y. 13 nonveterans, 1 veteran Of the officials who run Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers (with titles like associate director, nurse executive and chief of staff), only 13 percent are veterans. And why is this allowed to happen? Because VA employees have a union. The union agreement that says that any job will 2002 Dodge Durango RT All Wheel Drive great in snow, new Goodyear tires, rack & pinion, ball joints, front end alignment, tune up $4200 434724-1844 2002 kia sedona, blue w/gray leather interior, 3rd row seat, sunroof, CD, p/l, p/w, a/c, good/heat, runs/excellent, great family vehicle, very/ clean, $1,500/down or $2,999. 434-728-2022. 2000 pontiac montana, white w/ tan interior, 3rd row seat, CD, p/l, p/w, a/c, good heat, runs/excellent, great family vehicle, very/clean, $1,000/ down or $1,999. 434-728-2022. 2004 volvo xc90, blue w/ beautiful tan leather, AWD, p/w, p/l, p/s, heated seats, sunroof, 3rd row seat, CD, and more, $4,000/down or $5,999. 434-728-2022.

go first to any qualified candidate within the facility. And then there are the hiring categories. One hefty position for coordinator is open only to in-house employees. Lower-paying jobs, involving peer support, are open to veterans, but only if they’ve already been certified by the government for the position. Never mind, apparently, the preference points that veterans get when applying for any government job. Wandering through the job listings at usajobs.gov is an eye-opener when it comes to being a veteran trying to get a job at the VA. Some say that foreign citizens can be hired if no qualified American can be found. Many are open only to current employees of the VA. So where does the janitor come in? The Daily Caller was right. Use only “veterans preference” as your one search parameter, and you get a long list of janitors. They call it “housekeeping aide.” (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc. 95 Suzuki Sidekick 4wd 4dr automatic ac Pioneer stereo CD 30mpg. 2400 obo 434476-2200

The Long Drive

--Picture, if you will, a jam-packed Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The Browns, the league’s perennial heartbreakers, have taken a 20-13 lead in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos. There are less than six minutes left in the game, and the crowd is in a frenzy. The Broncos would muff the kickoff return and start their possession on their own 2-yard line. For most quarterbacks, this would seem like a daunting task. Not Broncos quarterback John Elway. The record-setting Stanford grad, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 215, was basically engineered for just this sort of thing. Smart, cool under pressure, howitzer of an arm, had legs that could plow a field. He could punt, too. Put simply, he wasn’t like the other guys in the league. So he went to work, providing us what is today simply known as “The Drive”: After the mishandled kick, the Broncos face first down and 10 at their 2-yard line. Elway from the end zone, dumps to running back Sammy Winder for 5 yards. Second down and 5, Denver 7-yard line. Winder 3-yard run. Third down and 2, Denver 10yard line. Winder 2-yard run, first down. Denver 12-yard line, Winder 3-yard run. Second down and 7, Denver 15-yard line. Elway breaks for a 11-yard run, first down. Denver 26-yard line. Elway has time, smashes tight-end Steve Sewell for a 22-yard pass over the middle. First down, Denver 48-yard line. Elway fires to Steve Watson for 12 yards to bring us to the 2-minute warning. Cleveland fights back, Dave Puzzuoli sacks Elway for a loss of 8 after his incomplete pass intended for Vance Johnson. It’s third down and 18 at the Cleveland 48-yard line with 1:47 left in regulation. Elway

drops back before rifling a pass to Mark Jackson for 20 yards. The Broncos have not failed to convert a third down. Denver at the Cleveland 28 with 1:19 left. A 14-yard rocket to Sewell, then a 9-yard scramble by Elway. It’s third and 1, and Denver is at the door on the Cleveland 5-yard line with 39 seconds left in the game. Cleveland fans are screaming. Elway drops back, stops and drills Jackson in the end zone for a touchdown, and the Rich Karlis extra point sends them into overtime. He later kicks the field goal that will send them to the Super Bowl. The Broncos were trounced by the Giants and the Redskins in successive years, the 49ers would crush the Orange in 1990. The secret to beating them was simple: stop Elway. Between Dan Reeves’ predictable, conservative play-calling and a thin supporting cast, Elway was almost a man alone. In the late ‘90s, this time armed with Terrell Davis and a stiff defense, Elway would win two Super Bowls in a row, including one over the Reeves-coached Atlanta Falcons. Now 55, Elway is the general manager of the Broncos, a team recently crushed in the Super Bowl by the Seahawks. Their quarterback is an aging legend, Peyton Manning. Elway is credited with rebuilding the team around him, setting the stage for a comeback against the Cam Newton-led Carolina Panthers. Newton, at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, is the modern-day Elway. The Broncos game plan will be simple: stop Newton. Just as the Giants, Redskins and 49ers did to Elway in years past. The Broncos again stand at the precipice. This time they are reloaded. Can Newton be stopped? Can Manning retire on top, or will it be another long drive home? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Danville Science Center Gets Creative with Design Zone On Saturday, January 30th, Danville Science Center opened Design Zone. The nontraditional, experiential exhibition shows how math is used to create everything from hip-hop music to skate parks. Guests will find out what it takes to create a video game, make a laser light show or design a roller coaster. Participants can put their ingenuity to the test as they encounter a variety of challenges faced by developers, producers and designers. The exhibition gives a behindthe- scenes look at how these professionals use STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) as a tool to do amazing things. “Design Zone encourages creativity and teamwork,” explains Adam Goebel, Executive Director of Danville Science Center. “Our guests will be challenged to solve real-world issues and find out how essential math and science are to that process, while having a lot of fun along the way.” Science Center guests will be able to put together their own audio tracks, make music on unique instruments and produce digital art. Other activities include designing a skate park, building architectural structures and customizing a bicycle before competing in a virtual race. Design Zone highlights the relationship between science and art to create an unforgettable experience. Guests continue the learning in the Digital Dome theater with immersive presentations displayed on a 40-foot screen. Adventurers of all ages can travel back in time, take a journey through the cosmos and showcase their creativity – all at the Danville Science Center. PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. Judy Bryant is my advertising consultant.”- Bert Sellers Owner • Seller Brothers, Inc. “We moved here over 5 years ago and LOVE your paper. It was our first time selling items through your ads. Q: Can you tell me what Josie Bissett has been up to? -- Cara T., via email A: At the time of this writing, the gorgeous and super-sweet “Melrose Place” alumna was filming “Operation Chromite” in Seoul, South Korea, where she plays Liam Neeson’s wife in the war drama, which is based on the real-life Battle of Incheon during the Korean War. Since that won’t come to theaters for a while, you can catch Josie on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime when she stars in the suspensedrama “Pregnant at 17.” Josie plays a veterinarian named Sonia who discovers her husband had an affair with and impregnated a 17-year-old girl. I spoke with her about the movie, and she told me: “Sonia is married to Jeff (played by Roark Critchlow) and trying to have children. She’s unable to have children and had a miscarriage. Roark is a really great actor. I’d never worked with him before. Sonia finds out that he’s having an affair, and of course that’s devastating. She becomes obsessed about finding out who she is, but a lot of it is that feeling that anyone would get when someone is being betrayed. She figures out where the girl works, and she goes in and gets a sorbet. She ends up chatting with her, and she realizes that Chelsea is just this really sweet, innocent young girl who’s only 17 and pregnant. She also realizes that the girl has no clue about Jeff being married. She finds out through Sonia and ends up not wanting to have anything to do with Jeff. I just love what my character does with the situation.” *** Q: I was so happy to read your interview with Gatlin Green about the return of “Heroes Reborn.” Now I hear it’s been canceled. Is that true? -- Deena T.,

Josie Bissett Photo Credit: Courtesy of josiebissett.com Trenton, New Jersey A: I am sorry to report that the supernatural drama has indeed been canceled. While it was intended as a close-ended, limited event series, there was always the hope that it would be back for another go ‘round, but it wasn’t meant to be. NBC’s entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt confirmed the cancelation, saying: “I think we’re coming to the end of the world -- maybe. Stay tuned. As far as I know, there are no more incarnations of ‘Heroes’ coming.” *** Q: Can you tell me when my favorite show, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” will return? -Kellie M., via email A: The hilarious Netflix comedy will be back for its second season on April 15. And I do have a little sneak-peek news for you: Cast and crew were spotted filming at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. “Friends” alumni Lisa Kudrow was spotted at the theme park too, although as of this writing, we don’t know if she was there filming a guest spot, or if it was just a coincidence. character, Witch Hazel. *** Q: I have an old paper recording by Rudy Vallee with his picture on the blank side. Is it worth much? -Donna, Wiers Beach, N.H. A: Your record was issued by Hit of the Week and was sold at news stands beside the latest copies of Liberty, Saturday Evening Post and Punch. The recordings, which featured such popular entertainers as Eddie Cantor and Duke Ellington, sold for about 10 cents, making them extremely affordable. Your Rudy Vallee recording is worth about $5 in good playable condition. Incidentally, the main drawback of these products is that they had a tendency to curl. *** Q: I have a political poster of Richard Nixon that was used in 1948 to promote his congressional campaign in California. It is in fairly good condition, and I have been offered $200 for it. Keep or sell is my question. -- Carol, Orange County, California A: Take the money and run. Your poster generally sells in the $50 range. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Q: My mom and dad were among the first in Chicago to own a television set. It was an Emerson Model 608 console with pop-up screen. I have inherited it, and its unusual design must mean that it is worth more than just a few dollars. -- Carl, Naperville, Illinois A: Your television was introduced in 1949 and was, as you claim, quite unusual. I would, in fact, consider it a classic. It had a 16-inch tilt-out screen that could be hidden when not in use. I have checked with two serious collectors, and they seem to agree that your set is worth somewhere in the $400 to $600 range depending, of course, on its condition. *** Q: I have three issues of “Marge’s Little Lulu” comics, Nos. 39, 81 and 123. Are they worth keeping? -- Betty, Springfield, Ill. A: According to most of the guides I consulted, they are worth a minimum of $100 each in good shape. As with most collectibles, condition is paramount. The value of a comic boils down to several factors, including condition, scarcity and demand. A good place to monitor the value of comics is eBay. Incidentally, your issue (c) 2016 King Features No. 39 also features Synd., Inc. another popular cartoon

(MS) — Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate — especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fire- and moisture-resistant batt insulation, like Roxul Comfortbatt, on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building. Tips on this easy, low-cost DIY project that will reduce your home’s energy loss and save you money are available at www.diywithroxul.com.

Healthy Bodies Don’t Need Supplements --DEAR DR. ROACH: After viewing an infomercial that praised the benefits of probiotics, I would like to know what you think. Probiotics have been prescribed when one is taking antibiotics to replenish the good bacteria that is lost. When taking no medication, I found that when I took one capsule (30 billion live cultures per capsule/10 probiotic strains) on a daily basis, I would get gas and diarrhea; therefore, I stopped taking them. I thought that this was the exact opposite reaction that should have occurred. Please write about the pros and cons and the reasons/necessity for taking probiotics on a daily basis. -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract. However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symptoms. Probiotics haven’t been shown to benefit healthy people. Any treatment can have side effects. While there may be some benefits, such as preventing antibioticsassociated diarrhea, I hesitate before recommending any treatment to a healthy, asymptomatic person. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Does high blood pressure cause irregular or abnormal heart rhythms? -- P.K.S. ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the

top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely. High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it’s more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure. That being said, since it is possible they are related, it’s certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don’t have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heartrhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A. ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it’s important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. INGREDIENTS: 2 pounds skirt steak (don’t sub any other kind) 4 (8-inch) soft Italian sub rolls 2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 8 slices (8 ounces) white American cheese DIRECTIONS: 1. Trim fat from steak, if needed. Slice the steak crosswise, with grain, into 3-inch-wide strips. Place steak on large plate and freeze until very firm, about 1 hour. Using a sharp knife, shave the frozen steak as thinly as possible against the grain. Mound the meat on a cutting board and chop coarsely with your knife, 10 to 20 times. 2. Adjust the oven rack to the middle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. Split rolls open, spread on baking sheet, and toast until lightly browned, 5 to 10 minutes. 3. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in 12-inch nonstick skillet over high heat until just smoking. Add half of the meat in an even layer and cook, without stirring, until well-browned, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir and continue to cook until the meat is no longer pink, 1 to 2 minutes; transfer the meat to a colander to drain. Wipe out the skillet with paper towels and repeat with the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and chopped meat. 4. Return the now-empty skillet to medium heat. Drain the excess moisture from the meat, return the meat to the skillet, and add 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Cook, stirring constantly, until meat is warmed through, 1 to 2 minutes. 5. Reduce heat to low, sprinkle with Parmesan, and lay American cheese over the top Let cheeses melt, about 2 minutes. Fold the melted cheese into the meat thoroughly. Divide the mixture evenly among the toasted rolls and serve. TIPS: (optional) Slice a sweet onion thinly and sauteed it in a little oil along with a thinly sliced green bell pepper. Add to sandwich
