Piedmont Medical Center’s Weight Loss Surgery Team Reaches Monumental Milestone:

1,000 BARIATRIC SURGERIES AND COUNTING!

e are very proud to spotlight two members of our The 1,000th bariatric patient, Ruth November, was very excited surgical weight loss (bariatric) team for completing their about her upcoming surgery, but not because of the number. 1,000th bariatric surgery in October! Kamran Borhanian, MD “I’m so grateful to get surgery, that I was able to qualify, and and Alex Espinal, MD, both general surgeons, have worked that my insurance covers it,” she said. Potential bariatric together on all of their weight loss surgeries over the last patients are required to meet certain criteria in order to be decade. They take turns eligible for any kind of weight loss surgery. Piedmont Medical Center currently November had been struggling to lose weight leading and assisting, offers three options for laparoscopic which is one of the for two years under a doctor’s supervision, weight loss surgery: Roux-en-Y reasons they believe and was unable to make the kind of they’ve had such progress that would help her ongoing gastric bypass, adjustable gastric successful outcomes health conditions: high blood pressure banding, and sleeve gastrectomy. with their patients. and sleep apnea. When we posted about the doctors’ milestone on our various social media outlets, many current and former patients volunteered glowing testimonials about their experiences with the two surgeons. “It has been a little over three months since my surgery and I have lost 65 pounds,” one patient said. “Drs. Borhanian and Espinal are the best! I have had zero complications! Great team!” Piedmont Medical Center currently offers three options for laparoscopic weight loss surgery: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy. “The smaller incisions [used in a laparoscopic procedure] are a lot easier to recover from,” says Dr. Borhanian. This often makes weight loss surgery an attractive option for those who are considering it, as opposed to the days of open surgery when recovery was much longer and more painful.

Alex Espinal, md Kamran Borhanian, md

A resident of Matthews, NC, November said she interviewed several surgeons before choosing Piedmont Medical Center for her surgery. Ultimately, she felt the most comfortable with Dr. Espinal and the entire team’s approach to support her both pre-surgery and post-surgery. Her main objective is not to achieve a certain weight goal, but instead, to improve her health. “I want to look in the mirror and feel happy, not have to take blood pressure meds, have more energy, and look good in clothes.” ...continued on page 3

etween Breast Cancer Awareness events, numerous community events and our own Employee Fall Festival, October was a busy month of extracurriculars for our Piedmont family! To top it all off, we received some great news: Piedmont was awarded a Hospital Safety Score grade “A” rating by The Leapfrog Group, a national leader and advocate in hospital transparency. The aim of the Hospital Safety Score program is to grade hospitals on their overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. I am very proud of our hospital for earning the highest possible mark, and view these results as proof of our commitment to work PIEDMONT MEDICAL CENTER to provide exceptional HOSPITAL SAFETY SCORE healthcare to every person we have the privilege to serve. Congratulations to our Piedmont team on their hard work to be one of the only hospitals in the region to achieve an “A”!

The Hospital Safety Score issues A, B, C, D or F grades to all U.S. hospitals based on how safe they are for patients. During the Fall 2013 grading period, the publicly available data showed that this hospital had patient safety procedures in place that exceeded the standards of other medical institutions.

At the beginning of December, we will begin an exciting new project at Piedmont: the expansion and renovation of our Emergency Department. During construction, we will continue to provide emergency services around the clock, but as we begin this new phase of construction, we will need to close off the existing route from the main hospital entrance to the Emergency Department from South Herlong Avenue. We will place signs to direct traffic and utilize all of our media outlets to help to inform the community, but I want to make sure all of our patients know the new route to take before they require emergency care. That’s why Piedmont is kicking off our “Take 5, Tell 5” campaign. Take five minutes of your time to spread the word to at least five people you know. As of December 2nd, patients will need to use Frank Gaston Boulevard (where HealthSouth is located) to drive to the entrance of the Emergency Department. This road can be accessed from South Herlong Avenue or Ebenezer Road. The renovation is slated to continue for approximately six months, but we will be diligent about keeping the residents of our community updated on any changes in the construction schedule. Thank you in advance for your patience as we work to expand and enhance our Emergency Department all while building a healthier community. I would like to wish you and your families a very happy holiday season. Thank you for a wonderful year. *As of the printing of this publication, there has not been an announcement about the Administrative Law Judge’s decision regarding the Fort Mill hospital Certificate of Need. Please check our website for more information should it become available.

1,000 Surgeries and Counting! continued from page 1 The surgeons performing November’s surgery agreed that they didn’t feel particularly special for having completed 1,000 surgeries, but did feel proud when they thought of the number of lives that had been positively affected. “This is why we went into medicine, to help people,” said Dr. Espinal. “What better feeling can you have? You can see the impact of what you are doing as [patients] get rid of medicines, are able to exercise, walk, and play with their children.” If you or someone you know are considering weight loss surgery but would like to learn more, attend one of our free seminars! You’ll hear about the process directly from our surgeons and our bariatric program coordinator, Deb Myers, who has gone through the surgical weight loss process herself!

ongratulations to our most recent Service Excellence Award Winners! Employees are nominated for these awards by patients and their families or fellow employees. Each month, one person is selected by their colleagues as the Employee of the Month. We also honor one outstanding Nurse with the DAISY Award each month. Quarterly awards are chosen for our Leader of the Quarter and Physician of the Quarter. These employees set an excellent example of what it is to have Piedmont Pride and to truly put the well-being of their patients and peers before themselves. This group is no exception!

Matt Lawless, our Leader of the Quarter, donated the financial gift he received from the award to purchase a red wagon for our Pediatric unit. The unit can use wagons like this to transport our young patients in a fun way, adding a little happiness to the time they spend in the hospital. We salute Matt for such a thoughtful and selfless act of kindness!

Annual Employee Fall Festival ...a Big Success! Every year we hold a special Fall Festival to celebrate our dedicated employees and their families. This year’s event was an especially huge success, with over 2,500 in attendance! Employees from different departments around the hospital created and staffed 20 themed booths (a record number) for trick-or-treaters to visit and collect candy. Our Food and Nutrition Services team served over 2,000 hot dogs to attendees. There were plenty of smiles to go around, and we couldn’t have done it without the very employees we were celebrating! We are fortunate to have such a fantastic Piedmont family!

Let your love shine this holiday season on the Lights for Love tree.

LIGHTS FOR LOVE

T

he PMC Volunteer Auxiliary has several projects throughout the year that help to benefit our community, and one of these is a very special holiday fundraiser called Lights for Love. Donations can be made for a light on the Lights for Love tree in honor or in remembrance of loved ones. Money raised through this project fund both two- and four-year scholarships for York County students wanting to pursue a career in healthcare.

Over the past 25 years, Lights for Love has raised more than $220,000 in scholarships for over 100 York County students embarking on a health-related field of study. In York County, as well as throughout the country, nurses and other healthcare professionals are in short supply! Not only is this an opportunity to grow our healthcare human resources, it also provides an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of some of our local students.

For more information on the Lights for Love project or to make a donation, please contact the PMC Volunteer Office at 803-329-6828. Help Support the Volunteer Auxiliary by shopping with us! You’ll find unique items and gifts for all occasions in the Gift Shop – located at entrance to the Women’s Center. Get involved! id you know that walking has the lowest dropout rate of any kind of physical activity? It is a very accessible form of exercise especially in our area where parks and walking trails, such as the Piedmont Medical Center Trail at the Rock Hill Outdoor Center located at Riverwalk, are readily accessible. Walking has many benefits: • Helps reduce risk for coronary heart disease • Regulates stress and boost overall energy • Improves blood pressure and blood sugar levels • Helps maintain body weight and lowers the risk of obesity • And much more!

We are thrilled to partner with “Walk with a Doc,” a non-profit organization that strives to help the community take steps to better their health. This program is held once a month at the Piedmont Medical Center Trail at Riverwalk. Walkers joining the featured physician have a great opportunity to ask questions about their health, and enjoy the camaraderie of others in the community! Join us for Walk with a Doc the second Saturday of the month at 8 am. First time registers will receive a free t-shirt and pedometer.

N U RS I N G NO O K

Your care heals patients, comforts families and provides encouragement to all whom you touch.

PATIENT CARE

O

ur patients’ health and safety is our highest priority. In the event that you or a family member is admitted to the hospital, you will witness two actions from your nurses that help us provide high-quality, patient-centered care. The first is the “bedside hand-off.” As nursing shifts change, your nurses will discuss information about your health and plan of care to ensure a smooth transition and focus on patient safety. They will encourage you and your family to engage in this discussion and your “goal for the day” so you can be an active participant in your care. This is an excellent time for you to ask questions or raise any concerns that you may have about your health. The nursing staff will also incorporate “purposeful rounding” into your daily care, by checking on you hourly during the day, and every two hours during the night. There are several things that nurses will review during rounding, including: addressing your pain and making sure it is at a tolerable level, ensuring that you are in a comfortable position and helping you to move if you are unable, assisting you to the bathroom if needed, ensuring that any personal items you need are nearby, assessing your safety and improving quality of care if needed.

Pink Ribbon Tea We were thrilled to host over 100 guests this year during Breast Cancer Awareness Month for our fourth annual Pink Ribbon Tea. Rosemary Clement, Piedmont’s certified breast care nurse navigator, organized the event to honor those patients she works with who are breast cancer survivors. Attendees and their guests enjoyed the company of one another, exhibitors, a program of informative and high energy presenters, and plenty of delicious treats provided by our Food and Nutrition Services. Thank you to those who joined us.

8

We hope that these initiatives make you feel more comfortable during your stay, and we thank you for allowing us to be a partner in your health.

YORK TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND PIEDMONT MEDICAL CENTER

P

iedmont Medical Center is proud to have partnered with York Technical College to educate nursing students since 1974. Through Jane Fleischer, RN the program, students are able to apply their Program Coordinator, York Technical College classroom curriculum in a clinical setting. This helps to reinforce the knowledge they gain from their instructors and textbooks. The clinical component also gives students the opportunity to rotate through different departments in the hospital, such as the Medical/Surgical Unit and the ICU, and get exposure to the newest techniques and technologies. Between 30 and 40 students graduate from the nursing program each year, and approximately half continue on to become Piedmont employees. Many of these new nursing graduates go on to assist in educating future York Tech nursing students. We look forward to continuing this valued nursing partnership for many more years to come!

Honoring Piedmont Medical Center’s retired nurses and employees.

BLAS T FROM T H E PA S T

W Ina Oates, RN

hen you ask Ina Oates about her years as a Nurse, her demeanor immediately shifts from a kind and soft spoken person to one who is proud and authoritative. And it should. She served as a Nurse Supervisor, Head Nurse in the Emergency Department, Head Nurse of Outpatient Surgery for over 40 years, and as a mentor to many. She graduated nursing school in 1946 and worked at York General Hospital and Piedmont Medical Center for 43 years before she retired in 1989.

One of her greatest joys was having the opportunity to train her own daughter, Patt Lauckner, RN and Nurse Navigator in the Emergency Department, when she began her career at York General Hospital as a nurse in 1972. Patt is still with Piedmont today and both are proud that a third generation of nursing continues with Patt’s niece, Jill Knight (not pictured). When asked how nursing has changed over the years, Ina remembers nurses being responsible for the entire medical history and how physicians often leaned on them to read EKG’s because “they could do it better than some of the doctors.” Everything was so new and happening so quickly, they would often be the only ones present when an x-ray needed to be interpreted or a gastric tube needed to be placed. “I read a lot, asked tons of questions and learned a lot on my own. Back then, there weren’t ER doctors, just local physician who took call on a rotation. When they were called in to see a patient, they would ask us what we thought, what we had observed; and they trusted us to take care of that patient.”

Ina Oates, rn

Patt Lauckner, rn

It’s not hard to see how Patt was inspired by her mother to become a nurse. Patt is very proud of her mother and mentor. “She showed me the importance of patience and old fashioned virtues. I understood that nursing was her first love. She is an inspiration to many.”

Congratulations Lt. Daniel Thomasson, winner of the “Westies - Best of the West 2013 Paramedic of the Year”

T

he Enquirer-Herald awards this title to a paramedic who receives the most votes from readers in the western part of York County. Thomasson has been a paramedic for five years, and has been working for EMS for nine years, citing his parents, both paramedics, as his motivation for choosing his profession. “My dad has always said that I’m a people person, and that people take to me pretty easily,” he admits. “Being friendly makes everyone more comfortable, which leads to less stress.” He was also Piedmont’s Employee of the Month in June, so it seems that everyone would agree that he’s doing an excellent job! 9

Look Good Feel Better is dedicated to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of people undergoing treatment for cancer.

I

f you or someone you know has ever faced cancer, you know that sometimes the treatment can take as much of a toll on the patient as the disease. It can affect the appearance of patients’ skin, hair, and nails, and when you’re already facing the fight of your life, these changes can make it hard to remain motivated or feel confident.

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER (lookgoodfeelbetter.org) is a national program that we are pleased to offer at Piedmont Medical Center. Quarterly beauty sessions for women aim to improve their quality of life and overall outlook by promoting fellowship for those experiencing the side effects of treatment. Volunteers teach patients special tips for combating changes in appearance; they help patients with proper skin care techniques for sensitive skin, makeup application and provide demonstrations on the use of wigs and scarves. Some of the women at October’s session embraced the makeup wholeheartedly, while others had hesitation over penciled-in eyebrows and lined lips. However, everyone left the evening with a new beauty tip or two up their sleeve, a little more color, and a big smile on their face. One attendee, Valerie, described the effect that the chemotherapy had on her nails and hair, admitting that she had found those changes harder to cope with than even her mastectomy. She said she most enjoyed being with others who are experiencing issues similar to the ones she is having, and that she planned to adjust her daily routine to incorporate the use of mascara. When asked if she would recommend the class to others For more information about Look Good Feel Better going through cancer treatment she nodded, or to register for the next class, visit the Calendar “It makes you feel like a woman again.” of Events at piedmontmedicalcenter.com.

T

U

he Piedmont Carolina Vascular Laboratory has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in Vascular Testing by a panel of experts for the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. This accreditation is only designated to facilities deemed to be providing quality care in compliance with national standards, and is based on Piedmont’s quality of care in the fields of Extracranial Verebovascular Testing, Peripheral Venous Testing, and Peripheral Arterial Testing.

se of capnography, a practice that measures how effectively patients are breathing, has been expanded at Piedmont to monitor patients using patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) to manage their pain levels post-surgery. This improvement comes at the recommendation of several leading healthcare organizations, such as the Joint Commission and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, to help alert healthcare providers of life-threatening respiratory problems in patients. 11
