PHOQUS will develop state‐of‐ the‐art photonic technologies that will enable development of new imaging tools for the Life Sciences, necessary to make significant advances in the understanding of a range of outstanding biomedical problems from the molecular and cellular to the tissue and organ level scales. The program is rooted in the world class expertise in life science, medical and photonic research at the University of Dundee

PHOtonic tools for Quantitative imaging in tissUeS Marie Curie ‐ Innovative Doctoral Programme PHOTONIC TOOLS MOLECULAR AND CELL LEVEL ANALYSIS TISSUE LEVEL ANALYSIS MULTIMODAL SPECTRAL ANALYSIS

Specific aims of PHOQUS are to • Train a new generation of exceptional scientists in the life and physical sciences, without the historic barriers that have existed between disciplines • Develop new photonics tools that will feed into the design and development of smaller, more cost effective instruments • Use these new tools to investigate the cellular and molecular dynamics which drive the process of cell division • Use newly developed imaging techniques to investigate the role of cell behaviours during embryonic development and disease. Funded by

Seventh Framework Programme, The People Programme This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 608133

A cohort of 13 early stage researchers will be working in the following project areas • Compact femtosecond lasers for Multiphoton imaging • Visible tuneable lasers for Confocal Microscopy • High strength photonic tweezers • In vivo imaging by Quantum Dots and other nanoparticles • Super‐Resolution Analysis of the Human Mitotic Spindle • Optical tweezers for kinetochore‐ microtubule interactions • Nuclear Dynamics with FLIM • High speed Light Sheet Microscopy (LSFM) • Developmental tissue dynamics using Non‐diffracting LSM • Analysis of gut dynamics in health and disease • Terahertz imaging of tissue dynamics • Cardiovascular Diagnostics • Multi‐wavelength in‐vivo tissue analysis in Drug discovery

PHOQUS will benefit from the close involvement of 19 Associated Academic and Industrial Partners from across Europe TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE FOR PHOTONIC SCIENCES ASTON UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY OF BERNE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY OF FRANKFURT UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD UNIVERSITY OF PISA UNIVERSITY OF TUEBINGEN CARL ZEISS GmbH COHERENT LTD IMSOL LTD INNOLUME GmbH LEICA GmbH M‐SQUARED LASERS LTD PHOTOMETRICS LTD SPE LAZMA TERAVIL LTD TYDEX

Scientists recruited to PHOQUS will work as a cohort, developing a true identity as interdisciplinary scientists: essentially "problem oriented physicists” or "solution oriented biologists". PHOQUS aims to develop researchers with the correct mindset to discover and address the big problems in biology from an early stage in their research careers.
