NGOs Condemn Targeted Attacks on Health Workers and Volunteers Islamabad (Dec. 21, 2012) - The Pakistan Humanitarian Forum, a network of 53 not for profit organisations, deeply condemn the attacks this week against health workers in Pakistan. The health workers were targeted for their efforts to protect children and contribute to efforts to eradicate polio. Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world where Polio is still reported. “We are deeply saddened by these acts of violence against innocent workers, and ask, in the strongest possible terms, for all parties to respect the safety and security of health and humanitarian workers, who are delivering life-saving services. The role of communities and concerned stakeholders is essential for the success of the anti-polio drive� (Chair, Pakistan Humanitarian Forum). As a result of these attacks, immunization campaigns are halted in many districts. Safety of humanitarian workers and allowing them free access to the people in need must be prioritised to ensure the basic needs of Pakistan’s men, women and children are met. The PHF extends sincere condolences to the families of those killed and injured in these tragic and senseless attacks, and calls on all parties to respect and ensure the safety of men and women working to assist those in need.
