School Tours College Park Aviation Museum offers a variety of educational tours which utilize our permanent exhibits and include interactive, hands-on activities to extend learning beyond the classroom, and to excite students about the history and science of flight. Our tours are designed to address grade-appropriate Common Core and Maryland educational standards and can be modified to accommodate a wide range of learning abilities. We also offer in-class educational outreach programs. Call the museum to learn more!

On the Cover A plane departs College Park Airport above a fleet of model planes. These model planes belong to members of the Sky Lancers of Washington, a local Control Line club and are flown on a tether.

Meet our Volunteers Betty Gillis is our 2016 Volunteer of the Year. She started volunteering at the museum 4 years ago when a broken wrist meant she could no longer volunteer at the hospital. Always willing to lend a helping hand, you can find Betty at the front desk prepping materials for programs and crunching attendance numbers between her chats with visitors. When she is not at the museum Betty enjoys spending time with her 3 cats and traveling overseas.

Museum Library The museum houses a library that contains publications focusing on the people, aircraft, and activities involved in the history of College Park Airport, Maryland aviation, and early aviation up to World War I. There is also general material on the development of civil and military aviation, significant aviators, aviation technology, and aeronautics to make the Library a thorough resource on aviation history. The library is currently available for use by appointment. To make an appointment, please contact the museum at AviationMuseum@pgparks.com or 301-864-6029.

Mail Call August 6–October 16 On the battlefront, and at home, mail has long sustained the vital connections between military service members and their family and friends. With compelling documents, photographs, illustrations, and audio stations, Mail Call, an exhibition organized with the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum, tells the fascinating story of military mail and communication—from the American Revolution to the current war in Afghanistan. From the earliest handwritten letters that took months to deliver, to today’s instant communication via email or the Internet, the exhibition presents the changing look and format of mail pieces through the decades. It also examines the complex operations systems set in place to ensure safe delivery. Most significantly, it explores the incalculable role mail plays in maintaining the morale of our troops. Mail Call is a National Postal Museum exhibition organized and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
